II HAVE A BROWN THUMB, and not just because of my skin colour.

I actually kill every plant I touch. Give me a cactus, and after a few weeks, it will be begging to be put out of its misery.

Needless to say, spring presents a challenge – the garden. My neighbour across the street tries to be encouraging. His garden is drop-dead stunning. When May rolls around, I gaze out my living room window into a picture-perfect sea of colour and bloom. When I run into him, he hints not-so-subtly that maybe it would be nice if he could have the same view.

I hate to tell you this, neighbour – it ain’t gonna happen. My garden will, year after year, be a messy collage of impatiens, boxwoods and weeds (because I actually CAN grow those).

If you are like me, and your garden or yard is not the showpiece it should be, then you need to go straight to our People section. Meet some of the local businesses who can transform your yard into a flowering retreat. Maybe, if you ask nicely, they can roll in under the cover of darkness and you can take the credit yourself!

If your yard is already up to snuff, have a look at our two awe-inspiring features. The Saxony Manor, by Ambassador Homes, is not only a work of art and craftsmanship, but a technological feat as well. We also meet Zelko and his wife, Aleksandra, who found their family’s custom dream home on the market, proving you don’t necessarily have to spend years designing and building if you want a home that is perfect.

If the photographs of these remarkable homes inspire you to tend to your indoor space, have a look at our Comfort Zone where we talk to Aggie and Marisa at Elegant Changes, a local one-stop décor shop that specializes in custom fabric treatments for the whole house.

Hmmm…fabric…silk…silk flowers. I can’t kill those, right?

Sincerely,

Denise O’Connell, Managing [email protected]

INNOVATORS IN CUSTOM HOME THEATRES & GREEN LIVING

THE PLACE: Elegant Changes is a showroom full of luxury.

There are rich fabrics, sparkling mirrors, crystal, plush pillows

and a whole lot of glitz and glam. It’s a space that showcases the

extraordinary talents of Aggie Falcone and Marisa McLennan.

These two gifted ladies are the team behind Elegant Changes, a

one-stop shop for decorating. They take every job from conception

to completion. They do it all, from shopping with customers to

picking out furniture or selecting a custom piece. They design and

manufacture custom pieces like draperies and slipcovers and have

staff on hand to help with projects.

THE STYLE: Falcone and McLennan have been in business since

1988 and bring years of experience and expertise to every job.

Elegant Changes is both a showroom and a workshop. Over the

years they have seen trends come and go but what doesn’t change

is their passion for decorating. It is all about the client and the love

of style. No job is too small. “It’s more about interacting with the

client and less about the scope of the job,” says Falcone.

WHAT’S HOT: Neutrals have taken centre stage for a long time

but Falcone says the trend is now moving toward splashes of colour.

“I think colour-palette wise we are moving away from taupes to

grey-blues,” she says. Having just returned from Europe, she

divulges that there is a real colour shift happening there. “Purple

is a big colour,” says McLennan, “all shades of purple are in vogue.”

Falcone says the minute you move to blue-greys, purple is a natural

off-shoot and an easy transition to make.

FAVOURITES: Elegant Changes takes on the entire decorating

process. What sets this team apart from the rest is their on-site

fabric creations and focus on craftsmanship and commitment to

quality. They don’t contract out any part of the job, something

they’re very proud of. Falcone and McLennan have an unmatched

artistic vision when it comes to fabrics — everything from draperies

to slipcovers and custom bedding. “And since we do things right

here, we have better quality control and we can do things quicker,”

says Falcone.

TThe addition of original artwork into your home can instill life and energy

into an ordinary space. There is greater depth and detail inherent in an original artwork. Brushstrokes convey energy, together with the seemingly spontaneous application of the medium. It can be thought provoking, mood enhancing and will add another dimension to your home. Art is a personal reflection of you and if you are considering investing in your home, artwork and the proper lighting alone can create a huge visual impact.

However, jumping from viewing art to purchasing original artwork for your home can be daunting for the beginner. There are some basic guidelines that will help you overcome your fear and increase your confidence and enjoyment of the visual arts.

1. Develop a base knowledge and explore what you like. The first task is to determine what you like. An introductory knowledge of fine arts through the ages would provide a useful framework for this exercise. Visit the galleries and museums in your area and see as much as you can. Explore the Internet, and visit your local library, special exhibitions and art events – all good ways to get an overview of the art scene. Acquaint yourself with different art forms, genres and styles.

2. Visit art galleries. Visiting galleries during their open house events is a great way to learn: visiting artists or gallery staff may give presentations about featured work. These events also give you a chance to meet other people who have similar interests to yours. Join their mailing list to stay informed on happenings in the art community, new shows and events and openings. You’ll gain more exposure to the art world. The more you know, the easier it will be for you to find the right piece.

3. Find a mentor. On your research journey, if possible, find a knowledgeable individual to guide you.

4. Should you buy a work of art just because a certain artist painted it? Never buy a work of art just for the artist’s name. Bear in mind that most artists produce quite an uneven body of work. Not every work will be a masterpiece. Buy on strength of the work, not because the artist is popular. Prices will vary not only by style or period, but also by size. As a rule of thumb, the earlier works from a particular period, those featuring the artist’s signature (most popular) subject matter, are often the most expensive. Like everything else, however, there are exceptions to this rule. Similarly, when it comes to genre, (Impressionism, Expressionism, Realism, etc.), theme (landscapes, seascapes, still-lifes, portraits, abstracts) or media (oil, acrylic, mixed media, charcoal, lithography), let it boil down to personal choice, not the current trend.

5. Take into account where you want to hang it. Do you plan on displaying art throughout the house or in specific rooms? What kind of space do you have – large or small? Choose art according to area size. Large canvases or sculptures need to be appreciated where the viewer can stand back to see it in its entirety. Make sure there is room to do that. Smaller pieces work in a myriad of places and can also be grouped together.

6. Only buy what you love! Buying a work of art and hoping to make a profit is foolish even for the seasoned collector, never mind the beginner art enthusiast. But more than that, collecting artwork is an investment in the understanding of the human soul – it’s what distinguishes us from other forms of life in our ability to create and appreciate art. Buying art that is loved is buying art that will always have a place in your life. It will be forever rewarding. Most importantly, don’t let the opinions of others sway you. Art is a personal experience and every work will have a different impact on each viewer. You are the one who is buying and going to live with the art, not your friends – so buy what you like. OH

The words imposing, regal and palatial come to mind. Saxony Manor (as it’s affectionately referred to) is a place where one expects a manservant or maid to open the door and request one drop their old-fashioned calling card on the tray before being ushered into the drawing room. Yes, Saxony has a formal drawing room, exactly where old-world architecture decrees a drawing room be situated: to the left of the front door as you enter.

Michal J. Cerny, President and CEO of Ambassador Fine Custom Homes Inc., designed Saxony Manor with the elegance and romance of an old-world French chateau as his muse. This love for historical grandeur didn’t prevent him from including almost one million dollars worth of automated smart home technology and a cutting-edge HVAC system (almost every hour the entire cubic air content of the house is replaced, meaning a healthier home).

Right off prestigious Mississauga Rd., the 18,000 sq. ft., four-level, 23-room Saxony Manor overlooks the elite Mississauga Golf Course, but hidden from the eyes of curious golfers by a 300-foot leafy and heavily treed ravine. At night, through third-floor windows, the lights of downtown Mississauga twinkle in the distance. After years of planning, designing and building, Cerny is adding the finishing touches and screening interested buyers.

In this home, every luxury has been anticipated and is standard, right down to the slim, leather-lined drawer in the master bedroom meant for special evening wear. In truth, revealing what this house doesn’t have might have been a simpler task. It has nothing ordinary, nothing overlooked, nothing less than opulent. Cerny is correct when he says, “we don’t design and build homes that are for just anyone. We build for the niche few who demand the finer things in life and expect best quality practices to achieve this.”

“Best quality practices” include what Cerny refers to as building science – the dynamic interaction of variables such as temperature, air, water, moisture, the occupants of a home and the environment within.

Let’s start with the more than 25 tons of structural steel and 87,000 feet of rebar used throughout. Then there’s the 16-to-24-inch thick poured concrete foundation (the standard is eight-to-10 inches) that is waterproofed. The home is insulated with BASF two-pound foam. The house is equipped with 600-amp service (the norm is 200 amps), the first house in Mississauga to do so. Should everything in the house be turned on (and we mean everything at once), you still wouldn’t trip a breaker. A two-inch water main ensures that even when the mansion is bustling with guests, water pressure and temperature are not affected.

Saxony Manor is one of only six houses in Ontario with every exterior wall built with 100 per cent Indiana limestone. Four solid limestone columns support the graceful 30-foot-tall limestone portico. The black, smooth slate roofs and copper dormers are a fitting complement. Cerny’s custom-designed, wrought-iron Juliet balcony rails highlight a magnificent canvas of high-efficiency windows from Pella Windows.

LEFT: The North American whiteoak hardwood floors and ceiling in the family room and throughout the home were sanded, stained and finished on site.

TOP RIGHT: The gourmet kitchen is a foodie’s heaven with two Sub Zero built-in refrigerators, a six-burner gas stovetop and grill with double oven, and Italian granite countertops and backsplashes.

Inside Saxony Manor, ceilings range from almost 10 feet in most rooms, to a breathtaking 23 feet in the grand front foyer and great room. A massively thick solid white oak hardwood staircase with wrought iron side panels and curved volutes leads to the upper levels. Here, five-foot-wide hallways hold recessed art niches, with discreetly hidden outlets for lighting, waiting to play host to exquisite statues or murals. An elevator, panelled in solid walnut, travels from the lower level to the fourth floor. Custom-designed, 12-inch plaster cornice mouldings, carved with exquisite care, are everywhere. On the main floor and lower level, 60-by-112-inch slabs of hand-picked True Select Crema Marfil marble f looring were custom ordered and imported from Spain. Hydronic floor warming keeps the marble at a constant, comfortable temperature.

In areas where marble is not laid, rift and quartersawn solid North American white oak hardwood floors add a commanding richness. Solid walnut and cherry wood cabinetry and vanities, all designed by Cerny, and

handcrafted by the best trades people around, are showcased everywhere. Each piece is unique, compassed with extensive detailing, panelling, corbels and crown moulding.

Imagine a home where a computer analyzes the amount of ambient light spilling in through the windows and then decides how much energy is required to create the perfect lighting, even a particular mood. In Saxony Manor, a room occupancy sensor notes the number of warm bodies in the room and when the last one leaves, the lights go out. One of the first residences in the GTA with fibre optic cable, Saxony Manor is ahead of its time and pre-wired for tomorrow. On vacation and want to check in at home? The Smart Vision system can show you, via Internet, what’s happening in and around the house, at any time of day or night.

Who said one can’t have the best of all worlds? Saxony Manor embraces the past, is designed for the present and prepared for the future. As Cerny says, just like a sturdy century old-world French-Chateau, it is built as a home for generations to come. OH

It happens suddenly. Winter melts away and a new season begins. Spring fever – that restlessness brought on by buds emerging on the trees, green shoots popping up in the garden and the longer days – starts us contemplating what to do with the backyard.

Meet three local “backyard experts” who dig up a few ideas on how to create a landscape you’ll love, right outside your door.

evolved from a community based art and culture centre to a full service gallery with a large inventory of visual and sculpture art where individuals and designers come to see and buy the works

The search for the ideal home can be a long journey. For Zelko and

his wife Aleksandra, it took two years. At one point they even considered buying land north of Mississauga and starting from the ground up. But when they saw this custom-built home in Rattray Marsh, they were completely satisfied. It was perfect in every way. Continued on page 41

A large picture window in the family room gazes out onto a large backyard filled with luscious, mature trees and infuses the home with warmth and natural light.

f e a t u r e

The Rattray Marsh area has long been a desirable south-Mississauga neighbourhood. Located right on the lake, south of Clarkson, it is an area going through a renaissance of sorts. Many of the original homes built 40 or 50 years ago are giving way to new custom homes. The neighbourhood has everything that discerning buyers are looking for – mature trees, quiet and, of course, location. It is close to Lake Ontario and Lakeshore Road, near Clarkson Village, Port Credit and the highway.

James Hodgins and his team at Hodgins Realty Group Inc., helped Zelko and his wife find their home. “Zelko learned that it’s possible to find your perfect custom dream home,” says Hodgins. “Zelko came along and was able to take advantage of this amazing home. It was such an opportunity for him.”

Hodgins says that what really set this home apart was that previous owner and builder, John Pawlikowski, was involved in every decision made during the building process. It took two years to complete the custom home with unsurpassed attention to design, décor and fine details.

The 5,200 sq. ft. home was designed by David W. Small Design and every inch feels grand and luxurious. The stately stone exterior leaves

an impression. Once inside, elegance abounds, beginning with the large limestone tiles in the foyer.

Throughout the home, opulent crystal chandeliers are on display. Original canvas paintings from Europe create focal points in every room. Built into the walls are beautiful limestone art niches and detailed coffered ceilings grace every room. “These are the details that really stood out for us and make this home a notch above,” says Zelko.

The grand front foyer is flanked by the dining room on one side and the living room on the other. All the floors are Jatoba Brazilian Cherry hardwood plank, which encompass a range of hues that shine throughout the home. The front staircase is a showcase with its handcrafted, wrought-iron handrails.

As you walk to the back of the house, an expansive open concept kitchen with adjoining family room opens before you. The kitchen is a showstopper, designed by Home Reno Source, which also designed the bathrooms. Beautiful and spacious cream-coloured cabinets with a subtle patina blend beautifully with the black granite counters and island, which sparkle with silver accents. Continued on page 42

Off the kitchen is an area builder Pawlikowski calls the “Muskoka room.” It is actually an outdoor covered deck that feels like a living room. It’s a feature that Zelko loves and offers the family a chance to sit out on the covered deck, rain or shine, barbecue and enjoy the large backyard.

Upstairs, each of the four bedrooms is large and well appointed. Guest quarters, with an en suite, are separated by a small stairway. Oversized crown mouldings and baseboards grace the entire home. Pawlikowski says the carpentry crew from GM Carpentry & JJK Construction Inc. worked diligently on the all-important millwork and finishing details.

The master bedroom is large and spacious with a walk-out balcony that overlooks the backyard. The sumptuous en suite bathroom has a double jet tub, large, glass-encased shower and a water closet that houses the toilet and double sinks. The bathroom showcases unusual stainless steel under-mount sinks and imported faucets. Enro Tile designed the unique tile layout in the showers. Continued on page 44

One of the real surprises of this home is the basement, which is flush with bright, natural light. Pawlikowski selected large windows and large terrace window wells that offer superior drainage. It’s an entertainers’ dream with two large, open living and entertaining areas joined by a bar. A home theatre room has been soundproofed for maximum movie enjoyment.

The house also has its own elevator and a 24-hour video security system. Pawlikowski even thought about the kind of projects the future owner might want to take on. For example, he increased the voltage and added a water source for a future backyard pool. Out front, he added wiring for lighting and a fountain.

“This is a homey house. It is a house made to feel like a family home,” explains

Pawlikowski. “It is very cosy and warm.” He enjoyed building the house and tried to think of every possible detail. “Everything in the house is in the right place and this is because of the quality workmanship and contractors.”

Hodgins says that he loves it when his hard work pays off and he sees the satisfaction and excitement of buyers when they’ve stepped into a home that feels right.

It’s time for Hodgins and his team to turn their attention to finding the perfect family for Zelko’s previous home, located steps from the Mississauga Golf and Country Club on prestigious Saint Andrew’s Place. Zelko and Aleksandra have found their family’s dream home and the best part is they can move right in. OH

Add beautiful sheets with the highest thread count you can afford. (Thread count is the number of horizontal or vertical threads on one square inch of fabric.)

A sheet set with a thread count of between 300 and 400 can offer a luxurious feel.

Add the finishing touch — duvets, comforters, throws and pillows. Decorate your bed in a palette you love. Mix colour and texture.
