Backups

• What is a backup. A backup is when someone copies some data (like you may copy and paste your schoolwork!) and sends it to another workstation or hard drive. There are many ways in which to do this, though copying every word of it may not be a great idea.

• So, why backup your files? Well what would happen if you were doing your schoolwork - a project. The screen suddenly goes blank, and the computer freezes. You have lost all your data. OR…

• You are HACKED. Your data has been deleted!

Backups

• You can back up to:• Hard drive - HDD• These can hold mountains of data! Back your work up to these

and then your work will be safe! Lots of data can be put here… however it’s not a great idea to back everything up into one place

• USB stick• A USB stick can hold up to 256 MB of data - so NOT AS MUCH

as a hard drive.• However they are portable and you can take them almost

anywhere!• Because of this, they are easier to misplace and should not be

used as a MAIN back up!

Backups

• Keeping backups? You need a safe place…• At home? For a hard drive - yes. This would probably be the

safest place• At school? Yes and no. It wouldn’t be a good idea to take a

hard drive to school. However, take a USB and that would be fine

• Give it to an adult? If you trust them, I.e: Your parents• Saving work; Why not save on:• School desktop - providing it’s in YOUR account!• Your laptop (If you have one)

Backups

• How can you keep your back ups secure?• Well… if you have a USB, don’t LOSE it!• Never give out your password, they could damage your saved

backups• Keep it safe!• Don’t give it out!!!! Someone could easily overwrite your data!• TRUST NO ONE!

How to back up

1. Save your work 2. Go on to the internet

3. Log on to your email

4. Attach your work to the email

5. Send the email home

6. At home, save it!

This is not the most secure method, but certainly works! Especially if you have little time or space
