he name of the school is PATTERSON MEMORIAL BAPTIST GRAMMAR SCHOOL, Abeokuta (PMBGS). The T

school is named after a renowned Baptist leader and missionary, Rev. Ira Newberne Patterson who was once a principal of Baptist Boys High School (BBHS) and the last white man who led the Nigerian Baptist Convention as a General Secretary before an indigenous leader took over the mantle.

The school started on Egunya hill, Ago-Oba, Abeokuta. This was the former site of Baptist Boys High School before she moved to a new site at Saje, Abeokuta. Also, the site was occupied by the Ogun State Polytechnic, now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta before relocating to Ojere, Abeokuta. Patterson Memorial Baptist Grammar School was established in 1995 by the Ogun Baptist Conference. Therefore, the Ogun Baptist Conference is the proprietor of the school. The school was inaugurated on the 10th October, 1995. The commencement service was conducted by

Rev. L. O. Nasiru, (the then Chairman of Ogun Baptist Conference) at Glorious Baptist Church, Oke-Egunya, Abeokuta.

The Conference Secretary (Now President) of Ogun Baptist Conference is the symbol of authority and proprietor of the school. The control of the school was given at inception to the Education Board of Ogun Baptist Conference and Mr. O. A. Oyekanmi was the first chairman of the board. The first principal of the school was Deacon E. O. Abegunde who served from October, 1995 to May, 2000. On 21st June, 1996, the Ministry of Education and Youth Development under Ogun State Government gave a provisional approval for the establishment of the school, Patterson Memorial Baptist Grammar School. On 17th July, 1996, the final approval for the establishment of the school (PMBGS) was given by the Ogun State Ministry of Education and Youth Development, Abeokuta. The school runs as one institution with two campuses in Abeokuta city; the first in Oke-Egunya and the second at Idi-Aba.

Patterson Memorial Baptist Grammar School admits students irrespective of their religious faith or denomination.

The PMBGS is a co-educational and boarding school. She offers a comprehensive curriculum including the Sciences and Mathematics, Humanities (Arts), Business and Technical subjects. Since this is a Mission School, it is of necessity for the principal officer of the Parent-Teacher Association (P.T.A.) i.e. Chairman to be a Christian so as to fit in when called upon during the Conference Education Committee Meeting and other meetings.

FACILITIES

Welcome to citadel of learning that nurtures comprehensive education with modern and structural facilities. The school (PMBGS) has some facilities that aid learning without stress. The physical structure in the school has conducive serenity that makes students feel at home. The environment is neat and clean always. The green grass and the trees allow fresh atmospheric air. There is an advantage of good topographic structure; the school is located on hilly structure and plain ground that are opened to natural flowing breeze.

The school has standard classrooms with good ventilations. The teachers in the school are qualified and trained with high level competence in their fields. In our school, health and social life is guaranteed through the availability of medical facilities and qualified nurses in a hygienic sick bay. The spiritual growth and moral life of our

The students have access also to a modern equipped laboratory for science, mathematics and technical subjects. METHOD OF ADMISSION

Admission into Junior Secondary School (JSS 1) is open to pupils who have completed Primary Education and it is through purchase of admission forms and competitively participate in entrance examination and oral interview. There is also an opportunity for those who are on transfer from other school into JSS 2, SS1 and SS2. These categories are allowed after they have purchased admission forms, been tested and found suitable.

2. No student must be found outside the classes during the lesson period without adequate permission.

GENERAL CLEANLINESS

School and hostel premises shall be kept clean at all times. It is compulsory for all students to participate in compound cleaning to the satisfaction of the school authorities.

HEALTH CARE

1. All cases of illness must be reported promptly to the school standard sick bay.

2. New student must fill medical form with all health profiles as he/she resumes into the school. Certified medical documents that show blood group, genotype and other vital health information from government hospital/certified laboratory center shall be attached to the medical form on resumption.

3. The school shall refer any illness case that cannot be handled in the school sick bay to standard hospital at parent’s cost. Parents should always give health update about their child/ward to the school at the right time.

All equipment shall be handled properly. Any damage or loss shall lead to replacement.

OFFENCE AND PUNISHMENT

1. All students must be in school by 7.30am. Latecomers will be seriously dealt with.

2. No student is allowed to leave the school compound without an express permission from the appropriate authority. Punishment awaits the defaulters.

3. All students should respond promptly to the school bell. School timing is important and does not give any chance for loitering.

4. Each student should bring the correct books and other equipment to school every day.

5. Mobile phones are not allowed under any circumstance. Any student who disobeys this rule is liable to severe punishment.

6. Fighting and bullying are considered as serious offences and they attract severe punishment.

7. Cheating, stealing and moral lapses are serous offences. They may lead to suspension from the school. Any student who cheats in any examination will be made to repeat the class.

The students from JSS 1 to SS 2 wear the same set of uniforms which are: boy - brown khaki short, white shirt with tie and white socks and brown sandal (cortina). Girl - brown khaki pinafore, white shirt inner with tie, brown beret, white socks and brown sandal (cortina).

HOSTEL RULES

1. Obey the message of the bell at all time.

2. Prep and siesta are compulsory exercise to be observed at appropriate time by all students.

3. All students should eat at the same time and with their cutlery sets.

4. No student should take food outside the dining hall for any reason.

5. Stealing and pick-pocketing are considered as very grievous offenses and could earn the offender an expulsion from the hostel.

6. No student is permitted to beat another student, either by cane or anything else.

7. Fighting is prohibited.

8. Illicit and immoral acts are prohibited.

9. Only the green check is meant for hostel as house-wear and pure white for church as church wear.

10. All properties should be adequately marked for identification.

11. Any student returning to the hostel should arrive before 6.00pm.

12. Parents are to visit their ward only on visiting days (3th Saturday of the month). Parents visiting on other days should get permission from the Principal.

13. Any student attending to visitor without the consent of the appropriate authority will be severely punished.

14. No student should go out of the boarding house without permission.

15. Any student going out of the school must collect exit card/note from the House master or mistress.

16. Church activities and spiritual programmes are compulsory for all boarding students.

17. All boarders should attend morning and night prayer session.

18. Morning duties should be accorded a great attention and failure to do them will attract a serious sanction.

20. Cooked food from any visitor or food vendor is prohibited in the hostel.

21. Cooking by boarders in the hostel or around the hostel premises is not allowed.

22. Phones, computer games, playing cards, iPad, transistor radio and related electronic devices are prohibited in the hostel.

23. No student should be roaming around after light out.

24. On resumption date, every student is expected to return to the hostel with all required items and in house wear.

25. Bullying is prohibited.

26. Students should keep off from the hostel/staff quarters during the school hours as they are not part of the school academic area.

27. The climbing of school wall (fence) or hostel fence is strictly prohibited. Any student caught making holes in the wall in an attempt to climb the wall shall be suspended and

his/her parents shall repair the damaged wall. One bag of cement and ten blocks (9”).

28. No student is allowed to keep large sum of money more than N200.00 in the hostel or during lessons. Money brought for fees should be paid immediately to the office. Report of loss of money will not be entertained.

ACADEMIC PRINCIPLE

1. No student will be exempted from school tests and examinations once the school fees have been duly paid.

2. Students must not cheat during examinations. Cheating includes copying, spying, bringing prepared answers to examination rooms or soliciting the help of other students during examinations.

3. Students who engage in examination malpractice shall repeat the class. Students are not allowed to assist in examination matters, whether to invigilate, mark, collate or record.

ATTITUDE TO VISITORS

No student should attend to visitors except through the office of the Principal and with due permission.

PAYMENT OF FEES

1. School fees are paid directly into the school bank account. Duplicate of the Teller is brought to the school Bursary where the school fees receipt will be issued to the parents/guardians. The Bursar has been mandated not to accept cash from any student/parent.

2. The school fees is paid before or on resumption of each term.

3. Certificate classes i.e. JSS III and SSS III pay their fees on two instalments only.

SPIRITUAL PROGRAMMES

The school is mission-oriented, therefore, there is an opportunity to worship God and fellowship together in the school. Students and staff are only permitted to practice Christianity within the school. Our programme activities are as following: Morning assembly devotion, discipleship programme, school retreat and chapel worship service.

For the hostelites, the school has a chapel for Sunday worships, prayer meetings and Bible studies. We fellowship together also during Baptist Students Fellowship (BSF) on Sunday eve. It is always a refreshing moment before our Maker.
