JOINING HANDS TOGETHER IN THE BATTLE AGAINST CANCER

ANNUAL REPORT/ 2015-2016

“Destiny is not the matter of chance, it is a matter of choice, it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved”, says

thShakespeare. This year we entered 18 year of our operation. It is a matter of great pride and immense satisfaction that we have been true to the goal of cancer care management which we decided resolutely 18 years back. The review of organisational performance in the year indicates that we progressed well on all fronts. The income of the organisation grew by about twenty two percent, our program horizon broadened, visibility increased greatly, relationship with corporate sector for program partnership deepened and new initiatives were taken. To keep pace with the changing time, some strategic management decisions were made. J. Krishnamurti, one of the greatest thinkers in the world says “If you respond to a challenge according to the old conditioning, your response will not enable you to understand the new challenge”. We made necessary changes in our operational methodology for better performance. The country today is faced with a big burden of cancer care. I admire all members of GCCI team who worked whole heartedly in unison towards realisation of the goal of the organisation. Nikos Kazantzakis a giant of modern Greek literature says “In order to succeed, we must first believe that we can” I am quite sure that GCCI team will work with greater buoyancy in the years to come to reduce the cancer burden of the country.

Message from President

A Sanskrit chant from Brihadaranyaka Upanishad :

Þrel¨ ek T;¨frxZe;ß (Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya)

reflects human urge to go from darkness to light. We at Global Cancer Concern India right from inception, have been very passionately making efforts to take the people from realm of ignorance to the world of awareness about cancer in the fight against this deadly disease through our multi- pronged work.

The review of the organisation's progress in the year 2015-16 fills us with a high degree of satisfaction as there has been a good progress in different areas of our work. The number of beneficiaries under various programmes; Awareness and Education, Cancer-Screening, Primary Health. Palliative Care, Child Sponsorship, Vocational

Training showed good growth. The organisation responded to disaster situation in Chennai through a Health Care Programme. We were greatly encouraged by the distinguished presence of Union Ministers in our events. The Biography of the Founder Maj Gen R S Pannu was released in a function at India International Centre which was graced by Shri Rao Inderjeet Singh, Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Planning & Union Minister of State for Defence and attended by prominent people from different walks of life. Dr Harsh Vardhan - Hon'ble Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences released the first issue of GCCI's Research & Development Journal sponsored by RITES in a function held at Anusandhan Bhawan, Ministry of Science & Technology, New Delhi. We established new linkages with a number of prominent companies for mobilizing CSR support. We successfully completed Cancer Screening Program in five states with the CSR support of Union Bank Social Foundation. Our CSR Project, 'Mobile Primary and Cancer Care Program' supported by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd won ESOPS Award of Mahindra & Mahindra for excellence in programme designing and implementation. World Cancer Day and World No Tobacco Day were observed at national scale by organising a variety of activities by GCCI teams based in different states.

Our efforts to strengthen the financial sinews met with great degree of success as the Resource Mobilization figures went up by about twenty two percent.

William Wordsworth, a great English poet says,

“The world is too much with us; late and soon, Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers; Little we see in Nature that is ours”;

'Nature' is benevolent in gifting. Our donors see in 'Nature' as they expressed a higher degree of faith in our work in this year.

The burgeoning number of cancer patients in the country is posing a great challenge. We will exploit our full potential to fight this deadly disease as William Shakespeare rightly says, “We know what we are, but not what we may be”

ANNUAL REPORT/ 2015-2016

“There is no cause half so sacred as the cause of people. There is no idea so uplifting as the idea of service to the society.”

- Woodrow Wilson

GCCI has an unflinching belief in the above words. Right from its inception in 1998, it has been working inexorably with a missionary zeal to make difference in the life of people specially the disadvantaged suffering the affliction by the cancer. Today GCCI is regarded as one of the paladins of cancer care management in the country.

Our Programmes:

The programme spectrum of GCCI includes the following:

1. Child Educational Sponsorship Programme2. Preventive Programme - Cancer Screening/Awareness3. Vocational Training Programme4. Palliative Care/Home Care Programme5. Financial Assistance Programme6. Primary Health Care and Cancer Screening Centres

1. Child Educational Sponsorship Programme

Child Education Sponsorship programme helps needy and deprived children from cancer afflicted families to continue their education despite economic hardship. GCCI works in collaboration with cancer hospitals and educational institutions all over India. We prepare the case histories and gauge the educational needs of children from families where the bread earner has died due to cancer. We try to keep the children of the financially hard-pressed suffering families in school – so that they don't suffer lifelong illiteracy as a result of cancer. In this programme, sponsorship is given to those children who come from the cancer afflicted families. This monthly scholarship enables a child to complete his/her education without any hindrance up to XII std. GCCI mitigates the financial burden by paying the fee either directly to the school, child or to one of the parents by cheque.

Periodic monitoring is done by obtaining the records pertaining to the child's performance. Special preference is given to girl child and those children who come from economically weaker section.

Children from the cancer afflicted and below poverty line can avail this facility. And we provide this scholarship from class I to class XII. One child from one family can avail this opportunity. In the year 2015-16 the beneficiaries under this programme reached the figure of 402.

2. Preventive Programme - Cancer Screening/ Awareness

Cancer Screening Camps

Under the preventive programme, GCCI has been carrying out two major activities – Cancer Screening and Cancer Awareness Programme. For the last 18 years, GCCI has been organizing cancer screening camps and carrying out extensive awareness programmes through the teams based at various locations in the country. Each team has a panel of specialized doctors & trained nurses who use patient friendly, non – invasive screening mechanism that would be effective enough to discover cancer or early symptoms leading to diagnosis of cancer.

Vocational Training Programme

Cancer is a large group of almost 100 diseases. Its main characteristics are uncontrollable growth of the cells in the human body which can develop anywhere and can spread to other parts of our body. It is not deadly only; but expensive and exhaustive too. Those patients who come from outside metros or urban areas for treatment, have no jobs and no other source of income, feel stressed and demoralized, and yet, the cancer patients need to be kept busy and sometimes earning also to run their household. Through vocational rehabilitation programme, the cancer patients and their dependents were restored into the mainstream of life by making them competent, secured, enthusiastic, self assured and self sufficient.

Accomplishment:

l 67 persons belonging to the families of cancer patients were provided vocational training.

Palliative care is comfort care given to a patient who has a serious or life-threatening disease, such as cancer, from the time of diagnosis and throughout the course of illness. It is usually provided by a specialist who works with a team of other health care professionals, such as doctors, nurses, registered dieticians, pharmacists, and social workers.

4. Palliative Care/ Home Care Programme

GCCI's Palliative Care Programme for cancer patients is inspired by the above lines.

Palliative Care Programme at Gujarat Research Medical Institute, Ahmedabad. An agreement between Gujarat Research & Medical Institute and GCCI was signed according to which the institute would run a programme of free distribution of oral medicines supported by GCCI under its Palliative Care Programme for the disadvantaged people

Palliative care is different from hospice care. Although they share the same principles of comfort and support, palliative care begins at diagnosis and continues during cancer treatment and beyond. It addresses the emotional, physical, practical, and spiritual issues of cancer. Family members may also receive palliative care. Research shows that palliative care improves the quality of life of patients and family members, as well as the physical and emotional symptoms of cancer and its treatment.

Research shows that palliative care and its many components are beneficial to patients and family health and well-being. A number of studies in recent years have shown that patients who have their symptoms controlled and are able to communicate their emotional needs have a better experience with their medical care. Their quality of life and physical symptoms improve. Furthermore, patients who have serious illnesses and receive palliative care consultations have lower hospital costs than those who don't. These consultations help determine treatment priorities and, therefore, help patients avoid unnecessary tests and procedures.

In India 70% of the cases are detected to be afflicted with cancer when they are already in III or IV stage and are going through agonizing pain. This scenario shows the need for a mechanism, which can provide relief from pain, to the large population of cancer patients. GCCI has been providing home based palliative care since 2006. A team comprising a doctor, trained nurse and counsellor visits the patients at their homes to provide pain relief, medication and counselling including training to care givers for better handling of patients. Palliative treatment; which is not curative, still gives moral support to the patient and extends life for notable period of time and restores quality of life. In the last few years GCCI has managed to run 7 mobile palliative care teams, two in Delhi – NCR and five in other parts of country.

Accomplishment:l 2868 people got served through Palliative Home Care by making 8604 visits

5. Limited Financial Assistance Programme

Limited Financial help is given to the poor cancer patients to help them during their hour of need. Cancer thrusts heavy expenses on both – the patient and their family. Most of the time, families do not have their medical insurances. Education is no doubt one of the strongest weapons to vanquish cancer and development of cancer free society. The bread earner and other family members get completely exhausted – physically, mentally and financially while going through the long and painful treatment procedure. The aim of GCCI's Limited Financial Assistance Programme is to lessen the stress of grief stricken families.

Corporate Resource MobilizationMobilising CSR funds is stupendously challenging and as its success is inextricably linked to the factors like differing CSR priorities of the business houses, government policies, profile of the organisation, slow pace of proposal approval dynamics etc. A CSR cell which we established last year with the objective of researching the corporate CSR agenda of the companies and the institutions, up-scaling the degree of awareness about our cause and the work, synergizing the corporate need with our work and forging a long term relationship with the companies to garner CSR funds, made a significant progress towards the achievement of the set objectives. It very assiduously cultivated contacts with large number of prominent companies and funding organizations. Some of the highlights are as under:

ORACLE

In view of very high incidence of cancer in Bathinda (Punjab) and abysmally poor availability of facilities for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease there, specially for the disadvantaged, we had discussion with ORACLE company based in USA on a proposal of Mobile Primary Health, Cancer-Screening and Palliative Care for 3 years. The discussion was fruitful and it was decided that we would embark upon the project in June 2016.
