Welcome back to campus bearcat family. Once again, the summer has gone by all too quickly, and we are back in the swing of things. As the campus has changed, so have some as-pects of the Hilight. I know that it is slightly depressing that summer is over, but let’s all make it the best year possible! Cats Are “Setting” Up for New SeasonCHS volleyball season kicks offBailey Baker, Staff Writer The Cullman High School Bearcat volleyball team is gearing up for a new season with a new coach. With 7 returning players, and 4 moving up from the junior varsity, the team is looking at a nearly completely new team along with its new leader. I interviewed Mrs. Greenlee, a second year physics teacher, on how the team is looking, the games they are facing this year, and her goals for her new team.

Q. How is your first year of coaching the varsity team

going?

A. One word, amazing.

Q. How’s the schedule looking for this year?A. First we take on Brewer at

Brewer on August 29, then the Brewer tournament that weekend.

Our first area game is on September 10.

Q. Who do you think the toughest game will be?

A. Definitely Hartselle. They won state last year, and are in our area.

Q. What are your main goals for the season?

A. We would like to win area which is a high possibility with the amount

of talent we have on the team this year.

I also asked Allie Gipson, a Junior and upcoming varsity player, about her views on the fresh season.

Q. What position do you play?

A. I play left back. I’m a back row passer.

Q. What are you looking forward to most about this

season?

A. Playing with my teammates, especially the seniors. I’m close to all of them and it will be awesome

to be playing with them in their last season.

Q. What game are you looking forward to the

most?

A. Good Hope, absolutely. I used to go there and I know everyone that

plays on the team so I really want to beat them.

The Lady Cats opened up their season with a devistating close loss to Brewer. Five days later though, the ladies took on a home match against Hayden and Randolph. In a blowout the girls defeated the Hayden Wildcats 25-18 and 25-16. The cats ran into trouble, though, against Randolph and fell short in a two set loss.

This year there are nine home games and two home tournaments, including the all-important Hartselle game and the Cullman Pre-Area Tournament. “We love having a huge crowd to come and support us, it really pumps us up,” Allie adds. SportsBuilding ChampionsThe Cullman Cross Country team prepares for the 2013 seasonMarisa Franklin, Staff Writer

The cross country team embarks on their three day running journey at Doublehead Resort in Town Creek, Alabama.

Throughout the summer, the cross country team prepared themselves for their upcoming season. Through the months of June and July, the team attended “A Step Ahead” running camp at St. Bernard. This camp was four days a week which started at 7 am and ended around 9 am. Their workouts consisted of tempo runs and long runs that ranged from a minimum of 4 miles to a maximum of about 10. They also traveled to Doublehead Resort in Town Creek, Alabama for their team camp which lasted 3 days. At this camp, each morning they got up at about 7 am to go on a long run. The runners had plenty of time to bond, eat, and nap in the afternoons and then went on a second run in the evening. All this was done in hopes that that they will succeed in meeting their goals for this season.

Football Kicks OffThe Football teams goals for this seasonCole Lay, Staff Writer

Along with the school year starting, so does football season. It’s time for late night games and rivalries. As many of you know football season is huge in the south, tailgating and spending time with friends is just as important as the actual game is.

Coach Britton: What is your motto for the team this season? “Family and togetherness, for us to be successful we have to work as a team.”

Which game are you looking forward to playing the most this year? “I always look forward to the next game, but the game I’m looking forward to the most would have to be the Walker game. We have a lot guys getting their first start in a game and hope they have a great first game.”

How does it feel being so close to achieving the most wins of any football coach in Cullman football history? “I am very fortunate to be able to achieve this goal, but I didn’t do it all by myself. I had help from great coaching staff.”

Tyler Glen: How do you expect the team to play against walker? “Well I expect a four quarter game, I expect to win the game.”

What is the meaning of your Tattoo? “ Well it is my last name and I got the tattoo due to having good grades, being responsible, and staying out of trouble.”

Mason Jones: What are your expectations for the year? “Win region, beat Hartselle and to make an impact in the playoffs”

How has Practice been getting you prepared for the season? “Very intense, hot, long, stressful but it will better prepare us for the long run.”

Daniel Hunter: What are your expectations for the year? “I would hope we go to the state championship game this year.”

What game are you looking forward to the most this season? “Russiville considering it is our homecoming game.”

Beloved Coach Britton Beats Oliver Woodard

Coach Oliver Woodard was a well-known football coach for Cullman High School having won 106 games and as a result, the CHS football stadium was named in honor of him. On August 31st, 2013 our beloved coach, Mark Britton, tied Oliver Woodard’s wins. On September 6th, 2013, Coach Britton broke the record of 106 wins to make his grand total a whopping 107! Hopefully, the season will continue to add wins to Coach Britton’s outstanding record. Thanks for all you do, Coach and congratulations.

Liz Tankersley, the now Sophmore sweetheart, has a super groovy sense of style that , let’s be honest, a lot of us wish we could pull off. Liz wears classically cool pieces from Urban

Outfitters, Forever21, and Anthropol-ogie on the daily. Some key staples to pulling off this look on the regular are skinny jeans (of all washes), blazers,

and bold graphic tees displaying your true self. Another great thing about

being a “hipster” is that the style itself is extrememly versitle and fits all personalities and walks of life. So who would not want to be a part of

this carefree style based on expressing the true you?

If you are outdoorsy like the nature-loving senior Madeline Johnson, you might like shopping at places such as

Mountain High, Werner’s or Acad-emy. Patagonia shorts and a Kavu hat would be perfect for a day of hiking

for someone keeping up with this flexible trend. Chaco’s and T-shirts are everyday items worn by her as

well as others sporting this style. With autumn approaching us quicker than you think, a lightweight Columbia or North Face jacket for fall weather

would be more useful than ever. If you are a nature lover, this look

would be fitting for your personality. Maddie’s simplistic style and happy-

go-lucky attitude is loved by us all here at CHS!

It's Friday the 13th. If you're superstitious, you're likely under the impression that this is the most unlucky day on the cal-endar. Here are 13 facts about Friday the 13th to help keep your mind off all bad things that could happen today:1. This is the first of two Friday the 13ths on the calendar in 2013: September and December all start on Sunday, which means the 13th day falls on a Friday.

2. The 1980 film "Friday the 13th" grossed nearly $40 million during its initial cinema run.

3. Fear of the number 13 is known as triskaidekaphobia, while fear of Friday the 13th is known as paraskavedekatriapho-bia.4. Many hospitals and build-ings skip the number 13 when it comes to building floors and numbering rooms.

5. One psychotherapist, who specializes in the treatment of phobias, asserts that 21 million Americans fear Friday the 13th.

A New Era Begins Cullman City Schools Welcomes Dr. Griffeth Keillian Carpenter, Staff Writer

After years of working with Cullman City Schools, our long time and beloved superintendent Dr. Jan Irons Harris has retired. After the announcement was made educators for far and wide applied for the job! After a long application process and hours of consulting, the Cullman City School board de-cided on four finalists. After many private and public interviews the decision was made to name Dr. Dooreen Griffeth of Cobb County was named Cullman City Schools Superintendent. Dr. Griffeth came was assistant super-intendent of Cobb County GA, where she was over 25 of 149 schools. Before being named into the top four in the superintendent search Dr. Griffeth had never been to Cullman. “As soon as I found out that I was in the top four, I looked at my husband and told him we needed to go check out the town!” Says Griffeth when I spoke to her at the beginning of the year “We came down that weekend to explore the town.” When the call was made to tell Dr. Girffeth of her new job she was at her office in Cobb. The entire board called her on speaker phone to inform her of their decision. “I answered the phone and they asked if I was sure I still wanted to come to Cullman… I was very quick to answer YES!” Her boss was quick to congratulate her. After talking with her boss and coworkers she called her husband to inform him of her new job! When Dr. Griffeth arrived to Cullman she felt right at home. Cobb County Diplomas mean something to those who own them, and Cullman City Schools holds to same pride. Dr. Griffeth has high hopes for Cullman as she comes from a high preforming school much like Cull-man. Cullman exceeds its past years, year after year, and our new superintendent hopes to continue that trend. After 27 year in Education Dr. Griffeth has been given many awards and honors. She has been named teacher of the year, as well as having schools named Blue Ribbon Schools and Georgia Schools of excellents. Dr. Griffeth’s favorite award is the Service Above Self Award, Awarded by the Rotary Club. “This award proves that what I’m doing touches those around me. And that people see that in my work.” Being an educator of such a large school system takes a lot, caring for each student is hard work. We all know that she deserves the award and can’t wait to see the hon-ors she brings to Cullman! My Final question for Dr. Griffeth during our time together was if he was ready to be a Cullman Bearcat…. With a smile on her face she simply answered “Yes!”

10. DO NOT associate with any CONSTRUCTION WORKERS!

*1. You’re not cool unless you get a Hilight every time they are published. ;)

9. Don’t crowd the sidewalks. They are called sideWALKS, not sidestands.

8. Come to school with a good attitude. Teachers don’t think twice about sending a student who talks back to the office.

7. REMEBER: If your class doesn’t win the pep rally, it isn’t the end of the world. There’s no point in being a sore loser over a spirit stick.

6. Avoid the old gym vending machines if possible.

5. Sometimes, slower is better. If you hate lunch lines, walk slower to the lunch room. The cafeteria is less packed in between lunch bells.4. Have as much school
