BACKGROUND INFORMATION OF SUNDARGARH DISTRICT

The name of the district “Sundargarh” signifies its beauty and abundant natural resources district. This is the land of hill and forest, rivers and fountains, minerals and bio-diversity and is famous for ancient tribal culture and hospitality. It is situated in the North Western Plateu Zone of the State Orissa and is located within the latitude of 20 0 35’ to 220

32’ North and longitude of 830 32’ to 850 22’ East. The district is surrounded by Jharkhand in north, Chhatisgarh state in the west and districts like Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh and Keonjhar in the South and East. The Geographical area of the district is 9712 sq.Kms., which is about 6.23% of the state. Physiologically about 50% of the total area of district is forest, which is well distributed in all parts of the district. The district has a separate identity as an industrial district for Rourkela Steel Plant, Rajganpur Cement Factory and many other small industries.

The district consists of 3 sub-division,9 tahsils,17 blocks, 262 G.Ps. and 1744 villages. There are 4 municipalities and 7 Assembly Constituencies in the district.

Soil:The climate, vegetation, parent rock, topography and other biotic factors have

considerably influenced the genesis of soil and consequently great variation in soil type in different parts of the district has been observed. Red and yellow soils are mostly found in blocks like Sundargarh, Kutra, Koira and Lephripara, where as Black soil is distributed in all the blocks, but in small area.

Irrigation:So far Irrigation potentiality of the district is concerned; it is only 9.5% of the total

cultivated area. It means only 80.5% of the total area under cultivation is rainfed.Out of the total 9.5% irrigated area, 2.20% is contributed by Medium Irrigation Project, 2.86% by Minor Irrigation Project, 1.11% by L.I.P. and rest 3.33% is contributed by other sources.

Area and Production of Horticulture Crops:The agro climatic condition and soil of Sundargarh district is very conducive for

vegetable , spices and fruit crops. Since 56% of the total cultivated area (TCA) is high land and 80.5% of the TCA is rainfed there is enormous scope for dry land horticulture and particularly for plantation crops like Mango,Guava, Lime, Litchi etc.in specific pockets. Banana and papaya can be promoted in irrigated situation. Having a good scope for marketing inside the district itself in the city like Rourkela and other towns like Rajgangpur, Biramitrapur, Bonai and Sundargarh. Off season vegetable cultivation can be promoted in the district particularly in Kharif (rainy) season. In some blocks like Nuagaon, Bisra, Lathikata, Rajgangpur, Kutra and Sundargarh farmers are practicing the same but not in huge area except Nuagaon where Kharif tomato and brinjal are widely practicing. The productivity and production of different horticultural crops are quite discouraging as compared to the state and national average, which can be increased by adopting area specific land based cropping system through appropriate strategy. Agro Processing is an important function that takes place before marketing of product. A little value addition to the product by processing can increase the value of the same. Vegetables when produces in large scale can be preserved which in turn minimize distress sale. There are two community canning centers in service for imparting training to the beneficiaries.

Storage Facilities available in Sundargarh District

Storage of Horticulture-produce is an important function of the Horticulture production & marketing system, which involves holding & processing the produce, from the time of production till they are consumed or utilized for other purposes. Due to inadequate market infrastructure, lack of proper market linkage, storage facilities and market intelligence the marketable surplus got damaged right in the production center and the farmers do not get proper price for there produce.

Achievement made during 2008-09 under National Horticulture Mission

01) Establishment of Model & Small Nursery in Public Sector: The objective for setting up of

Model and Small nursery in public sector is to produce QPM on different fruit plants to make the

district self sufficient. There is a target to set up one Model and four Small Nurseries during 07 –

08 & 08 – 09. The progress made so far is given below.

02) Establishment of New Garden:-Assistance up-to 75 % of total cost limited to Rs 22,500/- per ha for mango, Litchi and K.lime &

Rs 11,250/- per ha for Cashew will be provided to the beneficiaries over a period of three years

in the ratio of 50:20:30 subject to survival not less than 75% of population in the 2 nd year and

90 % in the 3rd year. While in case of Banana Rs.15000/- per ha. in the ratio of 70:30 is

provided.

04. Human Resource Development: Training is an integral part & envisaged not only to develop the technical know how of

06. Protected cultivation: Very often planting material production gets impeded due to adverse weather condition like

rain fall and extreme heat condition. It is desirable to raise and grow seedlings under protected

condition where the temperature, sunlight and relative humidity of the micro environment remain

under control by constructing green house, shade net house, plastic tunnel and mulch. The target

07. Promotion of IPM / INM: Integrated pest management is preferred to chemical control of pest in view of

environmental and health hazards associated with the large scale use of inorganic pesticides.

Similarly integrated nutrient management is to be followed for better production and productivity.

There is provision for assistance @ Rs.1000/- per hectare to the farmer to take up IPM & INM.The
