BackgroundCrescent was born on the 30th July in the same bad

weather as Storm. She was cold and wet and needed a bottle when she was born to get her first colostrum drink. Colostrum is very important for new born calves it gives them the antibodies they need to keep healthy and have resistance against germs. Her mother is cow number 97, this is her in the picture. She is a heifer and Crescent is her first calf, her father is a 2 year old Jersey bull who was born and raised on the farm.

BehaviourCrescent is a shy calf. She is not very pushy

like Storm. Crescent hates leading and grinds her teeth the whole time. She is very quiet and is best friends with Fudge they are always distracted by her when we lead and so we have to tie Fudge up. She likes to be scratched under the chin and down her neck. Her favourite thing to do is chase the chickens and pheasants and play races with the other calves.

HealthWhen Crescent was about 3 weeks old she got very

sick. We don’t know exactly what happened to her but we think she ate some poisonous Rhododendron from the garden. She was so sick she couldn’t stand up or even sit up, we thought she was going to die. Her tongue turned a dark colour almost black and she was so weak she couldn’t suck her milk. Mum had to feed her for three days by a tube down her throat into her stomach. We just gave her fluid with salt and sugar and baking soda in it because we needed to keep her fluid levels up, we did it three times a day and put a warm wool cover on her because she was very cold and her nose felt freezing. Slowly she got better and she has not been sick again.

Home and FoodCrescent lives in the sheep paddock which is

right next to the house. She lives with Fudge Tia’s calf which is her best friend, Angel Kyla’s calf, Storm, Monster, Noel the black sheep, Wonky and her lamb Dandelion. Crescent drinks 5 litres of milk twice a day. She also has pellets and hay and eats grass.
