Using PPE and maintaining hygiene levels during coronavirus (COVID-19)

This ‘Back to Work’ guide outlines products and practical steps for employers and employees to keep themselves and their workplaces safe.

Personal protective equipment (PPE)• Employers must continue to provide PPE as required by their risk assessments.• Face masks and gloves play an important role in preventing the spread of the virus.

Employers must review the advice as it is updated by the Government.

Cleaning• Evidence suggests that the virus can exist for up to 72 hours on surfaces. Therefore,

ensure regular cleaning and disinfecting of touch points, such as door handles, hand rails, lift buttons, vending machines, and biometric clocking-in systems, using cleaning methods and products in line with the manufacturer’s guidance. Cleaning frequency should reflect how often touch points are used.

• Setting clear use and cleaning guidance for toilets.• Ensure washing facilities and hand sanitiser supplies are kept stocked up.• Consider the use of pedal, rather than hand operated waste bins, where possible.• Consider the use of hand towels, rather than air hand dryers, where possible.• Seek to minimise the use of shared tools, if this is not possible, then the equipment must

be cleaned between each user.

Personal hygeine• Encouraging people to follow the guidance on hand washing and hygiene.• Provide hand sanitiser around the workplace, in addition to washrooms.• Consider the use of hand towels, rather than air hand dryers, where possible.• There is some evidence that the virus can stay on fabrics for a few days, although

usually it is shorter. Therefore, if you are working with people outside your household, wash your clothes regularly.
