Welcome to the 2013 Indiana High School Press Association state journalism convention. We would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone, including students, advisers and administrators, for your dedication to scholastic journalism.

The advent of social media and advancing technology has given journalists more ways to tell a story. From quick photos and videos on Instagram to interactive graphics on the web to Twitter updates, the way we communicate with our readers and viewers is certainly changing. However, we must remember where we started. This year’s theme, “Back to the Basics,” is meant to remind us that the core journalism skills of writing, designing, reporting, SKRWRJUDSKLQJ�DQG�ÀOPLQJ�DUH�WKH�EDFNERQH�RI�WKH�latest methods of storytelling. We hope that, through all we have to offer this year, you will be able to either learn or enhance your skills in these areas.

All on-site competitions will be held Thursday evening. Students will attend a special presentation by award-winning photojournalist Damian Strohmeyer. After a few brief announcements in the Spurlock Center Gym, students will be released to their on-site rooms, located in the Napolitan Student Center.

Friday’s events will open with our keynote speaker, JEA Digital Media chair and national award-winning journalism adviser Aaron Manfull. Following his presentation, you will have the opportunity to participate in four 45-minute workshop sessions led by a diverse group of experienced faculty. The convention will conclude with the awards ceremony in the Spurlock Center Gym.
