Welcome To Flowood!

601-932-8007flowoodchamber.com

As Mayor of this City, I offer you a warm welcome to Flowood.

Flowood is located in Rankin County, east of Jackson, theCapitol of Mississippi. Because of its strategic location,Flowood is easily accessible by Interstates 55 and 20, as wellas the Jackson International Airport which is located in theheart of Flowood. Lakeland Drive (Hwy 25) is the main east-west corridor of the city and is one of the fastest-growingcommercial areas in the state. Diversified with industrial, medical, retail, office and residential areas, Flowood is idealfor both businesses and families.

Safety is a priority in Flowood. The crime rate here is ex-tremely low, due in large part to our professionally trainedpolice department which utilizes state-of-the-art law enforce-ment techniques that maintain the safe “hometown” feelingwe are proud of. Our new state-of-the-art fire and trainingfacilities are unlike any other in the state. Businesses will beglad to know that we have a fire rating of “four”. This ratingallows savings on insurance premiums. We are one of onlyfour cities in the state of Mississippi with this classification.

You will find plenty to do in our town. Our project of pride isWinners Circle Park, an approximately $4 million mid-citycommunity park that features exercise stations, a landscapedwalking track, tennis courts and an amphitheater. This park isoften the focal point of our many community events, all freeof charge and open to the public. A new 40 acre naturepark is just past WCP. It has an important educational com-ponent, a place where “city kids” can learn about trees, plants and wildlife. It has extensive walkways through thewoods with markers for native tree and plant species, a man-aged lake with waterfowl, and an amphitheater for outdoorclasses, presentations and small public events. We can’t leaveout our new bike trail that runs along Liberty Road. Golfers, the Refuge is one of the state’s premiere public golf courses, and is convenient to office and commercial areas.

All of this did not happen by accident. The Board of Alder-men has been dedicated in working with the Mayor’s officeto demonstrate a pro-business and pro-family philosophy. What is good for families is good for business - and what isgood for business can also benefit families. Every opportu-nity for growth is viewed as an opportunity to improve thequality of life for our residents - as well as our corporate citi-zens.

Please come and visit our city. I must warn you however, if you stay very long you are going to want to relocate your family and business interests to Flowood!

Please join us in Flowood anytime.

This year is particularly meaningful for me becauseit marks my 50th Anniversary of having Type 1 diabetes (T1D). In addition, this past January, my 7 year old granddaughter, Mollie Jane, wasdiagnosed with T1D. As a longestnddng JDRFboard member and supporter, I realize the tremen-dous contribution JDRF makes to the fight againstthis disease.

No other organization comesclose to this kind of support.

On behalf of the 29 million Americans living withTD, I invite you to join in the effort to find a curefor diabetes by becoming a sponsor of the OneWalk. Enclosed are the sponsorship levels and benefits, as well as a commitment former you toreview. It is my hope that you will support and walk with us on October 15.

Back ToSchoolTips For TheNew Year

Reset the Body ClockOdds are, the kidshave been out trappingtoads until late into theevening and thensleeping in. Easingthem back to a school-year schedule will en-sure that they show upbright-eyed, if notbushy-tailed. Here'show:

Spin SleepGet the kids on board. If they see going to bedas a punishment or a bummer, they’re going toavoid it. But if they understand that sleep isgood for them, just as exercise is, they may re-sist less. Talk about it like 'It's not that you haveto go to sleep, but that you get to go to sleep.'It also helps to tell them that you're going to beresetting your schedule, too, and have only in-credibly boring stuff -- cleaning the bathroom, discussing health care reform with her father --planned for the evening. That way, the kiddoesn't feel punished. It's the whole family get-ting ready.

Do the MathCalculate the hour at which they’ll need to getup in order to get to school on time (allowing agenerous cushion for chaos) and count back-ward nine or so hours. That's their "falling-asleep time" once school starts. Their bedtimemight be 10 or 20 minutes before that.

Shift their To-Bed and Wake-Up TimesIf they’ve been going to bed too late, beginningtwo weeks before school starts, move their bed-time up about 20 minutes every three or sodays. This change also means that exciting ac-tivities like TV watching and texting friendshave to end earlier in the evening so your kidhas time to wind down. Also, from the very firstday you start shifting their bedtime, start rous-ing them at the time they’ll need to get up forschool so they'll tire earlier at night.

Make Getting Up Worth ItAfter you flip on the light andopen the bedroom shades tolet in the brightest sun possi-ble, you let your kid play avideo game or watch TV firstthing in the morning -- atleast for a few days. It may sound like blas-phemy, but think about it: Waking up is biologi-cal. Getting out of bed, on the other hand, isvolitional. In other words, give them some in-centive. By the start of school, their body will bein the habit of getting up earlier.

Don't Force ItOn the night before school starts, your childmight be too hopped-up to get to bed on time. It's not a big deal for one night. Their excite-ment will fuel them that first day. Saying some-thing like "You have to go to sleep becausetomorrow is the first day of school" will onlyadd to the pressure. You can't force yourself tofall asleep. continued...

Get a Workplace that WorksJust as nature will reclaim an abandoned prop-erty by engulfing it in spooky trees and tallgrass, your child's desk, if you can even see it, isby now probably home to toys, trophies, dis-carded clothing, and artwork that's just short ofbeing good enough for refrigerator display. Notexactly a place that encourages focus. The bestway to set up your child's homework space? Letthem do it. Parents tend to organize their kidsbased on their own organization style. Whatworks for you, may not work for your child.

That doesn't mean, though, that you can't helpyour kid discover their perfect, intuitive work-space. After the desk is cleared, have them sitdown at it. Ask them to close their eyes andname the essential items they needs to do theirhomework. (These may include pens, books, acalculator, a computer, and even a drink orsnack. Some kids work well with an iPod play-ing soft music.) Then have them place theirhand where they’ll think to grab the item.Wherever it is they reach, that's where that ob-ject should live. Repeat this process with all theessentials. (Some kids might do this better withtheir eyes open, and that's fine.) Voila! The per-fect setup for your child to work efficiently.

Deal With "I Don't Want to Go to School!"Unless you homeschool, there's no questionyour kid has to be backpack-on, lunch-box-in-hand ready on day one. Still, replying "Youhave to go, or Mommy and Daddy will go tojail," while true, isn't ideal. Ask them exactlywhat it is about school that's eating at them anddon't accept "Everything" as an answer. Probegently, and depending on what they say, here'show to help them wrap their mind around thefact that school is just around the corner.

If what they means is: I don't want summer to end.Well, who can blame them? But help put that inperspective. Dreading the end of a good thingdoesn't mean that school is a bad thing. A re-minder of the aspects of school that theyadored last year -- friends, clubs, a particularsubject -- should do it.

If what they means is: I've heard older kids say school is not cool. You should be able to ferret this out pretty eas-ily. Then a quick "Are you kidding? What's notcool about meeting new people and learningnew things?" should do it for a kindergartner orfirst-grader. To an older kid, you might say, "Doyou really dislike school, all day, every day?" Ifit's fear of seeming uncool, they will probablybe able to name some aspects of school theyenjoy, and you can just remind him that theydon't have to pretend to dislike something justto fit in.

If what they means is: I'm afraid of the work.Reassure them that the first six weeks of schoolis always a catch-up time, and that when thepace picks up, you'll do whatever is needed tosupport them . You can always get a tutor tohelp out. Often times a high school student willdo it for little money. But watch your languagehere. You want to empathize about the fact thatcertain things may be hard without making theproblem seem insurmountable. So avoid sayingsomething like "Yeah, none of us Spunkmeyersis good at math -- you got the gene!" Instead, try "Yes, math can be tough. But we'll figure itout one way or another." continued...

If what they means is: I'm worried I'll have no friends/bebullied/have to eat lunch alone.Social worries are huge for kids and can cause alot of anxiety about the start of school. If some-thing happened last year, they're probablythinking that more of the same is going to hap-pen. There's a lot you can do, though. Find outbefore their first day if their friends are going tobe in their class, and if they're not, preparethem for that by talking over whom they caneat lunch with and making plans for afterschool. See if you can have a late-summer play-date to reconnect them with some of the kidsthey like, or even arrange to have breakfast onthe first day of school with their best friend andtheir best friend's mom. The more they knowabout what's coming up, the better they'll feel.

• If attending a new school, try to visit yourchild’s school at least one week in advance. Letyour child get familiar with classrooms, hallwaysand important offices such as the principal andthe nurse.

• Do your homework: Talk to the teacher, thenurse, the guidance counselor and the principalin advance. Show both your interest and yourgoodwill. Tell them of any concerns you have inregard to your children’s health, and apprisethem of any learning problems in advance.

• A ‘safety first’ attitude is a very important partof preparing for the first day of school. Youwant your children to know traffic safety as wellas physical safety. Young children should knowtheir name, how to spell it, their telephonenumber and the number of a safe and respon-sible adult that is designated by their parents.Teach your child the proper way in advance todeal with bullies by reporting them to either ateacher or counselor.

• A little preparation before the big day can goa long way in easing your child’s transition backto school. It is important to be honest with yourchildren and tell them you will miss them too —and that they will like school because it will givethem new and exciting experiences. Be empa-thetic, be compassionate and be firm. Nurtureyour children, meet their needs and be reliable. You can’t spoil your children with love.

Over the past several years,Flowood has seen growth inseveral areas, but none as con-sistent as in the medical indus-try. It seems every year moreand more businesses are eitherrelocating to Flowood, or arechoosing to establish a newbusiness here to become partof our growing dynamic. Zava-tion LLC is squarely in the lat-ter. Having formed in Flowoodin 2010, they have grownthrough three different loca-tions until, in late 2015, theypurchased their current facilityat 220 Lakeland Parkway inFlowood, just behind Gateway Tires.

“We started out asa two-person oper-ation,” said JeffreyJohnson, owner and President of Zavation LLC .“It was myself and our Lead Engineer, LawrenceWalker, working out of a tiny office over onDaughdrill Station. We moved to Avalon Way offof Hugh Ward Blvd and then another on LibertyPark Court but even then we were still growingand in need of more expansion space. So, whenMcGraw Rental & Supply moved out of their loca-tion, we stepped in to take a look and it was theright space with plenty of room for us to continueto grow our company.”

Zavation LLC designs and manufactures medicaldevices to be used and implanted in certain surgi-cal spinal procedures. They currently employthirty workers in their new location.

“We have the best employees you could ask forworking at Zavation”, said Johnson. “We have alaid back culture and the employees seem toenjoy it. They are what keeps Zavation grow-ing. Quality products and customer serviceare critical in this industry and we do a greatjob of both, maintaining very strict quality re-

quirements and gettingour customers whatthey need whenthey need it.”

Now, five and halfyears into the life of his

company, Jeffrey Johnson can walk into workevery morning and see the fruits of his drive tosucceed. In a competitive market, Zavation LLCcurrently services over thirty states. “We haveseveral distributors across the United States,”stated Johnson. “Each of those have a series ofdoctors which they call on to provide our spinalsurgical products . We are now in the positionto produce a lot of these products in-house.This helps to keep us very efficient inturning around parts and ma-terials to our clients. In ourmove to this new facility, that was one of the keychallenges for us; ‘How do we move our entirefacility, double our machinery, train our peopleon the new machines and have the leastamount of days down during the transition?’ Ittook several months of planning for us to get ittimed out right and, in the end, we were onlydown one week.”

As Zavation LLC continues to grow on a na-tional level, they still keep one foot firmlygrounded in their localcommunity. “We have a localdistributor who has

been in the busi-ness for manyyears in theJackson area,”said Johnson.

“He works worthseveral of the local

doctors in town such astop spine surgeons Dr.

Davis, Dr. Moriarty, Dr. Wood at New SouthNeuro Spine and Dr. McGuire at UMC whoused to be their Chief of Staffof Orthopedics. He’s nowthe Head of AO NorthAmerican (a non-profit or-ganization dedicated to theadvancement of patient carein Orthopedics) and he consultswith our engineers on product design.

Governor Bryant recently visited ourfacility and was very impressed

with our organization. GovernorBryant is a big proponent of

bringing healthcare companies toMississippi and help citizens in our

state have greater access to high qualitymedical care. He was proud to see a medicaldevice company located in Flowood and bring-ing more jobs to the community. Even thoughwe’re growing all the time, our workforce ishere. Our families are here. And, our company,is here in Flowood.”

The City of Flowood Public Works Departmenthonored Johnny Taylor, one of it’s senior fellows,as he retired from his 19-year service with theCity as the Street Superintendent. As a member of the Public Works team,Johnny was a familiar face around every repair, upgrade, and new development in the City. Dozens of friends, family, and associates fromPublic Works, and the Fire and Police Depart-ments joined Johnny for the celebration. Greatfood, fellowship, and lots of jokes gave Johnny awarm sendoff. Garry Miller, head of Flowood’sPublic Works Department, said “Johnny has beena solid representative of our department formany years, and has left his mark of excellenceon every project he was involved with.” Congratulations to Johnny and his family. We wish you many happy years in retirement!
