Walking into New2You
Label Xchange in
Brentwood is like enter-
ing the Cave of Wonders, but instead of
gold, you'll find a treasure trove of cloth
ing for all your back-to-school needs.
New2You's school sales run through Aug. 31, offering deeply discounted deals on brand name labels such as Hollister, Aeropostale, American Eagle, Styles, Tilly's, Forever 21, and True Religon as well as Nike, Sheik, Converse, Vans, Uggs and restored Jordans.
"Our customers are our number one priority," said Krayle Dittmore, who owns New2You with wife Hilary. "We especially love it when someone finds something in our shop that may have otherwise been out of their price range for back-to-school. "
"Because of the high volume of cloth-

ing moving through the store, there is always something new to see," added Hilary. "We follow all the popular fashion trends. If it's trending now, we probably have it."
And with four children of their own, the Dittmores understand the challenges associated with finding quality clothes at a reasonable price.
Most gently-worn clothing items at New2You range from $3 to $19, with exceptions on certain designer labels. Shoes at the Xchange generally range f rom $5 to $15, and most boots are $20 to $25. New2You is always looking for current, trendy clothing for teens, young adults and the young at heart. The owners also purchase designer luxury items such as handbags, shoes and watches to offer in their store.
Located at 50 Sand Creek Road in Brentwood, New2You Label Xchange is open Monday through Saturday from 1 0 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Cash is offered on site (no consignment) to those dropping off clothes, or customers may opt for store credit. While many parents are
eager for the school year
to begin, it's important
to remember that your kids won't be
allowed to register or start school unless
you have turned in all of the necessary
health forms to show that your child is
up-to-date on immunizations and has
completed any required physicals.
Dr. Jaime Garcia, with Brentwood Pediatrics, is an expert at making sure kids are healthy and prepared for school and sports.
" It's so important for children and teenagers to have their annual well visits," said Shannon Moore, Brentwood Pediatrics' office manager. Wellness visits check children's hearing and vision and screen for diseases. It is also an opportune time for parents to sit down and speak with their children's pediatrician about any health concerns.
"So many topics are covered, such as motor, social and cognitive development; healthy eating habits, safety issues, bullying, peer pressure and more," Moore explained.
Many parents jot down a list of ques-

tions to bring to their children's annual check-ups. Having questions answered can be a tremendous rel ief. "Dr. Garcia has been our pediatrician for 16 years and during our visits he takes our concerns to heart," said Cathy Daniel, a Brentwood Resident. " He has always treated our family with the utmost care and respect."
These wellness visits are also the best time to make sure your children are up-todate on required immunizat ions. The state of California requires that children entering kindergarten show proof of Polio, DTaP. MMR Hepatitis B and Varicella (chicken pox) immunizations. All students entering seventh grade must show proof of the Tdap booster. Tdap protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough, which is highly contagious.
Students will not be allowed to start school without showing proof of immunizations unless they received an exemption.
Besides administering immunizat ions, Garcia's office also makes sure that kids are balancing physical activity with time spent in front of the computer or TV.
"While we are seeing an increasing number of kids who are overweight and have low Vitamin D levels, we are also seeing kids with overuse or repetitive use

Homework help for everyone
Kids are more success
ful in school when
parents take an
active interest in their
homework. Parents
can be supportive
by demonst rat-
ing study and
organization skills,
explaining a tricky
problem or just encouraging
kids to take a break. And who
knows? Parents might even learn a
thing or two.
Here are some tips to guide the way so you can help your students wit h t heir
studies this school year: + Know the teachers. Attend school events, such as parent-teacher confer
ences, to meet your child's teachers. Ask about their homework policies and how you should be involved.
+ Set up a homework-friendly area. Make sure kids have a well-lit place to complete homework. Keep supplies, such as paper,
pencils, glue and scissors, w ithin reach. + Schedule a regular study time. Some kids work best in the afternoon, following
a snack and play period; others may prefer to wait until after dinner. + Help students make a plan. On heavy
homework nights or when t here's an especially hefty assignment to tackle,
encourage your child to break up the work into manageable chunks. Creat e a
work schedule for the night if necessary and take time for a 15-minute break every hour, if possible.
+ Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no TV, loud music or phone calls. Occasionally, though, a phone call to a
classmate about an assignment can be helpful. + Make sure kids do t heir own work. Kids won't learn if t hey don't think for them
selves and make their own mistakes. Parents can make suggestions and help with directions, but it's a kid 's job to do the learning .
+ Be a motivator and monitor. Ask about assignments, quizzes and tests. Give en
couragement, check completed homework and make yourself available for questions
and concerns. + Set a good example. Do your kids ever

injuries from sports," Moore said. Kids do not have to be involved in
team or competitive sports to be active. Moore recommends swimming, biking, running, yoga and aerobics. "It's important to remember that growing bodies need rest too," Moore added.
If your kids are involved in school sports, getting their sports physicals completed in the summer wi ll help you to be prepared for the upcoming season. Students who participate in middle and high school sports are required to receive an annual sports physical, which focuses on vitals, such as blood pressure, height and weight comparisons, and rules out any reasons why a child cannot safely participate in a sport

requiring physical activity. Diet is also a huge component of
your child 's health. As kids start school, it's important for parents to pack lunches high in protein and fiber that will burn off slowly, which gives kids enough energy to get through the day. Moore recommends cheese, chicken, yogurt, turkey, tuna, whole wheat bread, fruits and vegetables, and most importantly, water.
Brentwood Pediatrics is located at 1191

see you diligently balancing your budget or reading a book? Kids are more likely to follow their parents' examples than their advice. + Praise their work and efforts. Post an aced test or art project on the refrigerator. Mention academic achievements to relatives. + If there are continuing problems with homework, get help. Talk about concerns with your child's teacher. Some kids have trouble seeing the board and may need glasses; others might need an evaluation for a learning problem or attention disorder.
