THE EMERGING LEDER AWARD SUMMARY

• The TechWomen Emerging Leader Award Program is an initiative of

the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural

Affairs. The Award is given to women who have excelled in their

technical professional fields. The women are drawn from Africa, Middle

East and Central Asia. Nineteen countries were awarded the 2015

TechWomen Award. I represented Kenya and Mount Kenya University

in the Program. The participants underwent a rigorous five weeks

mentorship program in their respective professional areas in different

companies in the bay area, in San Francisco California.

• There were several field trips to International Mega technological companies like Google, Facebook, Instagram, Theranos, LinkedIn, Twitter, AutoDesk and Symantec among others.

• In California, there were visits to Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley where I established potential linkages.

• There were various cultural exposures including visits to the Pacific Ocean Monterey Bay in California. Other cultural sites included; American Smithsonian National Museum, Aerospace Museum, Holocaust Museum , Abraham Lincoln Memorial, the White House among other places in Washington DC.

• I was a guest speaker at the Institute of International Education in San

Francisco California where I made a presentation on the efforts made

by the Kenyan Government to address the education of the girl-child in

marginalized areas in Kenya.

• I also participated in Community Service in San Jose California

preparing land for planting.

• I also addressed the US State Department of the disparities in

Intellectual Property Protection between Developing Countries and

Developed Countries.

CRITERIA FOR MY NOMINATION FOR THE AWARD

• My contribution to innovation in Africa holding a Post Doc in Innovation

and Entrepreneurship from Entrepreneur Development Institute of India

Ahmedabad.

• My vast research publications in Psychology (PhD holder in

Psychology).

• My expertise in Intellectual Property Protection studied in South Africa

and Monitoring and Evaluation.

• My presentations of papers in various International Conferences

including in; Israel, Geneva-Switzerland, Turkey, USA, Uganda, Ghana,

Nigeria, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Ethiopia, India, Rwanda, Kenya and

Somaliland among others.

• My exemplary contribution in Community Service.

RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION

• Mount Kenya University should establish linkages and

partnerships with aforementioned universities for postgraduate

supervision and departmental collaborations.

• Mount Kenya University School of Law should establish

partnership with Juniper Networks Campus Legal Department in

areas of Intellectual Property Patent Litigation Courses. There

are very few Patent Attorneys in Kenya.

• Mount Kenya University Library should pursue a Memorandum of

Understanding with the US Embassy Library in Nairobi which is

richly equipped. I being an alumni of the Award by the US State

Department, allows MKU access to the Embassy Library after

signing the necessary formalities.

• MKU Department of Information Technology should collaborate

with Anita Borg Institute of Computer Science to access free

computer coding programs. The Institute gives free coding

programs to Africa.

• I spoke to the US Embassy Nairobi to have the US Ambassador

Robert Godec to give a public Lecture at Mount Kenya University

on the theme ’’The US Socio-Economic and Political Relations

with Africa.’’ The embassy promised to fix the lecture within the

ambassador’s 2016 busy schedule.
