Cowboy defensive end Bryan Smith has claimed the McNeese State single season re-cords for quarterback sacks. He recorded his record setting sack in victory against Nicholls State and he recorded another in Bryan Smith

the playoff game with Montana. That gave him 13.5 sacks and broke the mark that had been held by current Cowboy assistant coach Jake Morrison.

MATT VIATOR Matt Viator led the Cowboys to a Southland Conference football championship and into the NCAA Division I champion-ship in his first season as the McNeese State head coach. He took over the head job four games deep into the season and is the 14th head coach in McNeese football history. Coach Viator was named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year, the Louisiana Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson award. He claimed his first collegiate coaching victory in his very first game as head coach when the Cowboys posted a 30-27 win over Southern Utah and went on to lead his team to the Southland Conference title, the 11th in McNeese history. He was 6-2 in his first season, 5-1 in league play. Viator had served the university as offensive coordinator and is regarded as one of the top 1-AA offensive minds. The Cowboys have ranked among the national leaders in offense for five of the past seven years and the university has also produced the Southland Conference’s top offensive performer two of the last four seasons. His offenses have led the league in scoring three times nd is tops this season. Prior to joining the Cowboys he was one of the top prep coaches in Louisiana, producing an 81-37 won-lost record, winning one state crown and five league titles. Quarterback- redshirt freshman Derrick Fourroux (13) started all 12 games for the Cowboys in 2006 and had one of the best years ever for a McNeese quar-terback...he completed 119 of 217 passes for 1,490 yards and 10 tds...he also rushed for 377 yards and five scores- he was named the Southland Conference and the Louisiana freshman of the year

Statistics- tailback Jamie Leonard (25) led the Cowboys with 605 yards rushing - Steven Whitehead (7) was tops in receiving with 42 catches and 609 yards- Blake Bercegeay (15) led in scoring with 81 points.... -Whitehead has a 17.6 punt return and a 25.1 KO return average and a 132.7 all-purpose average....- linebacker Allen Nelson (41) had 106 tackles and Bryan Smith (93) 13.5 sacks

HE CAN PASS TOO - Steven Whitehead also threw a touchdown pass for the Cowboys during the 2006 season....it went to Carlese Franklin against South-eastern Louisiana and it was the second pass of his collegiate career...he is 2 for 2 passing as he completed a pass to then Cowboy quarterback Chris Jones when he was a freshman...both Whitehead and Franklin were quarterbacks in high school- Franklin was 1 of 2 passing this year, his completion covering 35 yards and going to Whitehead

RUSHING COWBOY QUARTERBACKCowboy quarerback Derrick Fourroux ranked sec-ond on the team in rushing this year with 377 yards on 123 carries....those carries led the team...he also ran for five tds, tying Jamie Leonard for the team high td mark rushing....Fourroux’ rushing total is more than any Cowboy quarterback since 1995 when Kerry Joseph ran for 553 yards and seven tds....the school single season rushing record for quarterbacks was set by Stephen Starring in 1980 when he ran for 974 yards..Fourroux’ top game rushing was a 70 yard effort on 16 rushes against South Florida

The Last Time a McNeese Player

McNeese State is located in Lake Charles, LA, a city of 80,000 in the Southwest part of Louisiana. McNeese was established in 1939 as a junior college and a divi-sion of the Louisiana State University system. It later broke away becoming McNeese State. The school is named for John McNeese, the first superintendent of education in Calcasieu Parish (the parish in which Lake Charles is located). The school mascot is the Cowboy and was derived from the fact that John McNeese was also a cattle rancher and was renowned for making the first cattle drive across the Sabine River (the river that separates Louisiana and Texas).

McNeese is a coed univeristy with an enrollment of 8,800. Dr. Robert Hebert serves as the president and Sonny Watkins, a former McNeese player and coach, is the athletic director.

The schools of study for the university are: the Arts, Sciences, Engineering/Technology, Nursing, Education, Business and the Graduate School.

Among the many former McNeese State athletes who have gone on to professional stardom are: Joe Dumars in basketball (star with Detroit and now president of the Detroit Pistons), B. J. Sams ( kick returner for Baltimore) in football and Ray Fontenot (New York Yankees) and Ben Broussard (Cleveland) in baseball.

Steven Whitehead is a game breaker and he has broken many games open for the Cowboys during the past three seasons. He’s regarded as one of the most dangerous athletes in the nation - as a pass receiver, as a kick returner and as a rusher. Last year he led the Cowboys in pass receiv-ing, both punt and kickoff returns and he ranked fifth on the team in rushing. He has scored in all areas and he has even thrown a touchdown pass during his Cowboy career.
