Fall 2014 Back in the Saddle Again On July, 21, 2014, family, friends and Shell employees gathered at the Greater New Orleans Therapeutic Riding Center (GNOTRC) in LaPlace, LA, to give Mandy Vicknair the surprise of a lifetime. Her aunt, Shell employee Kathy Rauch, donated a lift to help Mandy return to horse back riding. With the help of the HERO program, Kathy was able to have Shell match her donation. Mandy, who is 31 years old, has been in a wheelchair since she was 3 years old because of the developmental congenital disorder spina bifida. Anita Hefler, executive director of GNOTRC said Mandy loved visiting the center for riding lessons, because she got to leave her wheelchair and experience horseback riding. Unfortunately, that all changed a year ago when Mandy’s dad injured his back and was no longer able to assist the staff in placing his daughter on the horses.

Back in the Saddle Again

On July, 21, 2014, family, friends and Shell employees gathered at the Greater New Orleans Therapeutic Riding Center (GNOTRC) in LaPlace, LA, to give Mandy Vicknair the surprise of a lifetime.

Kathy, who is part of a ranching community, learned about the situation after Mandy came to visit her in Texas and she saw how much Mandy loved the horses. She decided she wanted to help. Kathy set out to purchase a lift so Mandy to ride again. Shell employee Robert Smith assisted with welding the lift.

“With the Shell HERO program increase to $7,500 per employee, I was able to match even more than before. It was a great surprise to Anita when she got the e-mail!” ~ Kathy Rauch

Because of Kathy’s donation, Mandy, as well as many other wheelchair-bound riders, will be able to enjoy riding horses.

“The very first time I got on a horse I thought, ‘All my life I had always had people looking down on me, and now people are looking up to me…’ I have NEVER cried happy tears so much in my entire life! Thank you so much, everyone!” ~ Mandy Vicknair

SPLC employees demonstrated their commitment to public safety and environmental protection by wearing National 811 Day T-shirts on August 11, 2014. Our goal was to have a significant impact on the number of people who remember to call 811 before their next outdoor digging project. For more information on the call-before-you-dig process, visit www.shell.us/pipeline or www.call811.com.

Shell Receives Proclamation from City of Houston

Norco

Sorrento

On September 16, 2014, Greg Smith was presented with a proclamation from the City of Houston for Shell’s contribution to the Houston Fire Department for a new mobile safety trailer.

“Shell is pleased to have invested nearly $100,000 in a new mobile fire trailer that the Houston Fire Department can utilize to educate more than 100,000 students in the Houston area about fire prevention and safety. The new trailer can help save lives and reduce the number of children injured in fires.

At Shell and Motiva, we share the same position as the Houston Fire Department in making safety our number one priority. Providing free training to emergency responders, implementing our life-saving rules, continuously striving to achieve goal zero, and sponsoring the 811 Call Before You Dig Campaign are just a few ways we strive to strengthen our safety culture inside and outside of our companies. and fire safety are the responsibility of everyone in the community. By working together, we can help increase the safety of our community and our citizens.” ~Greg Smith

HSSE & SP AWARD Winners 1st & 2nd QuartersCongratulations to Derrick Allison, Pete Gering and Charles Jacob for being chosen as the HSSE & SP Award Winners for the first quarter of 2014. These three Control Center Operators noticed something unusual about the sump at Cameras. The sump pump started and stopped more times than usual and the controller thought there might be something other than weather causing the problem. The field was notified and upon investigation it was found that Unit #3 had a leaking seal and the seal leak alarm did not alert the Control Center of the problem. Although there was an LOPC the magnitude was minimized due to the actions of the CC Controllers. Without their actions this LOPC could have continued for another day until the station operator made his station checks. Chronic Unease played a role in causing the controllers to go one step further. Subsequent to this problem, all seal leak alarms have been checked and some were found to have issues. Thanks to Pete Gering, Charles Jacobs & Derrick Allison for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Congratulations to Roy Landry and Justin Williams for being chosen as the HSSE & SP Award Winners for the second quarter of 2014. During an extreme rain storm, 18.3 inches in a 24 hour period, at the St James Terminal, Justin and Roy supervised the OSRO during a cleanup of a small LOPC at the station. They also managed a group of contractors and ordered additional pumps to remove excess water from accumulating on the external floating roofs, preventing a possible tank roof from sinking and an LOPC. Through their leadership, Roy and Justin kept a bad situation from getting much worse.

9th Annual SPLC mark Keller memorial Charity Basketball Tournament

This year, the Lubricants Slubes defended their title and captured their fifth straight championship by defeating the S&D Playground Legends in the title game. S&D jumped out to an early lead but could not hold on as the Slubes took over in the second half. The coveted trophy will return to the Penzoil tower for yet another year.

In other action, the Control Center/GOM Over Shorts won the consolation bracket in a hard fought game against the Retail Fuels squad. A special congratulations goes out to these winning teams!

Most importantly, you were able to raise over $5,000 for M.D. Anderson Cancer Research in memory of Mark Keller, bringing our total donation amount to over $40,000 since we started this event. To show their appreciation, MD Anderson presented Shell/Motiva a plaque recognizing your generous contributions. During the presentations, Kellie Keller also expressed her sincere appreciation for the donation in Mark’s name and for continuing to keep Mark in our memories. Further, Shell and Motiva were recognized by the Houston Parks and Recreation Department for donating much needed scoreboard controllers for use in their Fonde gym.

Let’s really step it up next year as the tournament will reach the 10th anniversary milestone. Some special events will be planned. And remember, it’s not too early to start recruiting and practicing for next year. The Slubes must be dethroned!

Wishful thinking!
