1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 HISTORY OF IIEE

Rapid advancement in the field of electronics and its influence in our day-to-day life in general

and all aspects of industrial sectors in particular has placed challenging demands on engineering

education as a whole. Thus the need of establishing the Institute of Industrial Electronics

Engineering was felt by the Government of Pakistan and the task was assigned to the Ministry of

Science and Technology / PCSIR.

In 1985 a study mission of Swiss Experts was invited to Pakistan and it was identified that

Pakistan needs practical oriented engineers particularly in the field of Industrial Electronics

Engineering. The Swiss Government offered to establish an industrial Electronics Institute and

agreement of cooperation was signed in this regard.

The present location was selected for building Institute, while the cost of building, the

infrastructure, provision of utilities etc. were borne by the Ministry of Science and Technology

through PCSIR. All the equipment for establishing laboratories and three experts were provided

by the Swiss Government. PCSIR recruited the faculty staff to support the

academic/administrative activities.

The curriculum and training programme was jointly worked out and the Academic Council

/Affiliation Committee of N.E.D. University, Karachi was approached for grant of affiliation of

the Institute and award of B.E degree. After due inspection and assessment the university granted

affiliation to the Institute to conduct B.E degree course in Industrial Electronics Engineering.

The Institute started its classes in June 1989 with an intake of 40 students, and now it is

inducting a batch of 47 undergraduates in 1st Year Engineering every year. Graduate Engineers

of IIEE are very much demanded by the Industries/Organizations and those who have so far

graduated are all gainfully employed throughout the country and abroad.
