BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN INTERIOR DESIGNThe mission of the interior design program at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) is to provide an academic background preparing students to think critically, creatively, and independently, enabling them as beginning professionals in interior design to produce quality work and serve the public through protecting health, safety, and welfare in a diverse marketplace.

Accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation and National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the interior design program provides a broad experience in design, materials, stainability, and more through consecutive courses that build from fundamentals to a senior capstone project. Students may choose to pursue either a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts in interior design.

REQUIREMENTSThe program requires students to have a minimum grade of “C” or better in each FACS, ARTS, and ETCM course, pass a sophomore portfolio review, and have a 2.5 overall GPA to progress and graduate. Each student must also complete an internship that will expose them to real-world situations within their chosen field. It includes a 300-hour work experience with an approved company which can include those in the student’s local community, throughout the state, as well as international locations.

Minor: Programs in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences do not require a minor; courses required by the accredited programs essentially constitute a minor for those programs. However, a minor in general business administration or industrial technology is recommended.

INTERNSHIPSAn internship is required to complete the interior design degree program. Students are eligible for the internship program after completing 100 credit hours and specific prerequisite courses. By interning, the student is afforded the opportunity to network with professionals in the chosen field of study before entering the world of work as a university graduate.

SCHOLARSHIPSOnce accepted, students may apply for relevant scholarships by completing the Scholarships4Kats online application. Transfer scholarships are available for students who would like to continue their academic career at Sam Houston.
