Part XII. of "Cuneiform Texts from Babylonian Tablct?, &c.," contains texts
from eighty-five clay tablets and fragments of the Icouyunjik and other collectio~ls
The texts are chicfly syllabaries and may be thus described :-
(1 . ) Portions of an important series of U.rbylonian Syllabaries called 11) A :
~za-a-kz~, which, according to the colophoil of No. 92,691 (see Plates 10 and
I I ) , 111u.s~ have originally comprised at lcast thirty-nine tablets. These
tabletswere copied in thc tenth and eleventh years of the reign of Ar t a se rxe I..
Icing of Pcrsia from R.C. 46 j to u.c. 42 j, frotn a scrics of syllabaries at
Borsippa, for a certain nlan naincd Nabfi-kusur-shu, the ~o11 of &el-eriba,
who intended to mafie tliem a votive offering in the tenlple with the view
of securing for I~itnsclf future health and happiness. Of the texts the

(2.) An interesting- series of fragments of Babylonian Syllabaries of various
kinds, of importance both for the forms of the characters explainecl and for
thc explanations given. Of these texts the following arc published for the

38,178, 38,179, 38,182, 38,186, 38,266, 38,592, 38,744, 38,685, 47,935,

(3.) Texts of eight fragments of Syllabaries of the First and Second Classes,
which restore and complete several hrolcen passages in the texts published
in Part XI. of this work, Plates 1-5, 14-18, and 24 and 2 j ; they include
text No. 33,329, a duldicate of the text puhlishcd in Platcs 16 and 17 of
Part XI. of this worlc (Platc 34).
(4.) A group of Vocabu1arit.s belonging to the series SIG-ALAM : na6-rti-tz~nz, and
three portions of Vocabularies which have been attributed, though probably 7 .
on insufficient grounds, to the series. I hey contain much new nlaterial of
importance for the atudy of Assyrian iexicography (Plarcs 33-jo).
