For how many years is a typical baby travel system safe?We have an alm ost 4 yr old and are due with our second child in 5 m onths. Wehave everything we need, but a friend warned me against using our carseat and stroller again, becuase it may be out of safety regulation being almost 4 yrs old. It’s a Chicco KeyFit

30, and had great safety ratings when we purchased it. Any one know typically how manyyears a travel system is good for?

Star is a chick:February 24, 2012 at 3:26 am  (Edit)

Most car seat brands are 6 years from the date of manufacture. TheKeyFit 30 is still considered to be a great seat. Flip it over and lookfor a “do not use after” date stamped into the shell. Once you’re sure it’s notexpired, use the model number off the seat to search for a recall- for any seat. For the KeyFit, Chicco has only had one recall s ince 2001 and I don’t think your seat was produced between the dates for the recall, here it is http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/childseat.cfm#mfg_anchor

Do you plan on having any more kids after this one? if so I dontrecomm end buying pink because if you were to have a boy after, Idoubt you would want to use it. I’m having a little girl and went with gender neutral so I can use it again with my next child. How dirty it would get depends. My trunk can get kind of dirty sometim es wi th everything going in and out(especailly dirt on the stroller wheels) so you might find it would get dirty inthere. Its up to you.

Can anyone recommend a good baby travel system (capsule and pram) inAustralia?Or if any overseas brands will ship not for a fortune.

Reply

 panteck:March 4, 2012 at 8:35 pm  (Edit)

Hello Khadija. Through my experience, i avoided doing the babycapsule thing as it cost too much money for only a short period of time. Instead, i opted for a SAFE N’ SOUND car seat for newborns to 15kgs. Itcost me about $300.00 (Australian). I didnt mind paying this as it is aninvestment in my child’s safety. It starts in reverse (newborn faces the rear of the vehicle) and fully reclines. When your baby reaches 9kgs (by Aust. law) youare then able to turn it around and face the front of the vehicle. It is appropriate

to use up until they reach the 15kg mark then you need to look at switching toanother type of car seat. As i was s o happy with the Safe n’ Sound brand, istuck with it right through.

As for a pram, i feel one that you are able to fully recline for your newborn isfantastic, then as your child grows, you are able to pull the seat up. The pram iused was “Bertini” it was a four wheel, pneumatic tyres (pump up ones) and itcame with a wind s ock, weather shield, and was able to adapt as the childrengrew. It was r.r.p of $600.00 at the time, (far too expensive) but i was able topick it up second hand for a steal!! Try looking on the internet (like eBay) or Thenewspaper appropriate for whichever state you are in. Trading Post, TheAdvertiser etc. Hope that helped!!

Which baby travel system – Arthritis mother?Hi we had baby boy recently. My wife suffers from arthiritis and less capable whenmoving heavy objects. I want to know which baby travel system is more easier to handle. Iam looking for a package deal which includes car seat and my budget is £400 max. Pleaseadvice. Thanks all for the kind suggestions.

TakeMyAdvice:March 6, 2012 at 1:06 am  (Edit)

I don’t know of exactly which travel system would be bes t, but with myexperience there are a few features you want to take note of that willmake things easier for your wife, or anyone really.

1) Buckles o f the carseat – A puzzle lock clip is very annoying because the twopieces have to fit together before being snapped in. Look for a harness thatbuckles in with 2 individual prongs. (see below for a photo of the type of

harness that is easier)2) Carseat handle – You want a handle that is easy to adjust it up and down. Ifind that one where you squeeze a button on each side of the handle as youmove it up and down is MUCH easier than one where you push a button oneach side with your fingers. (see below for photos)

3) Adjustment of carseat harness – Some carseats have a nifty feature whereyou push a button which then loosens the harness. You’ll know it has thisfeature because there will be a tail of harness strap in the front. You will have totry them out in the store or read reviews online as some you have to pressharder than others. However, even one you have to press hard is much better than one you have to rethread the harness straps in the back of the carseat!

4) Weight of the carseat – None are really that light, but some are lighter thanothers. I would find one with the best features even if it’s not the lightest onebecause the carseat can go in the stroller anyway.

5) Stroller – look for something that is lightweight, not big and bulky and foldsup quickly and easily

6) Stroller and carseat together – make sure it is easy to secure the carseat inthe stroller and taking it out as well

Sorry I can’t point you to a specific one, but I hope this helps a little in your search. You can look for travel systems and read customer reviews onwebsites like babiesrus.com.

In response to the other answer that someone else gave – you may want tolook into a Baby Bjorn, Infantino, Ergo, Maya wrap or other carrier as well. I dofind a s ling/carrier us eful. However, your baby will need a car seat anyway sofind one with the features that you like. The great thing about an infant car seatas opposed to a convertible car seat is you don’t have to wake up your baby to

Page 4: Baby Travel System

put them in a sling. I had a c-section and several months after having the baby Istill become very sore after walking around with the baby in a sling for too long.A car seat/stroller combo works much better for me. Also, I am scared of slipping on ice while I’m carrying the baby in a sling (not an issue for everyone,of course) – a stoller is much safer for me. You and your wife will know what isbest!

I bought a dark blue Graco stroller when I was pregnant with my first. We got a lot of use out of it! Then when baby #2 showed up webought a dark blue tandem stroller which I hated! That thing didn’t turn well.Anyway we used the first stroller with the second baby too. And it seems nomatter how clean you try to keep i t, if you’re us ing i t A LOT like we did it alwaysgets a bi t dirty. I’d have to think that on pink it wou ld really show more. I’m guiltyof looking at a pink one myself now~~my kids are 8 & 6 s o I long ago s old allmy baby stuff and now I’m pregnant again!!

Even though I like this pink one I don ’t dare buy it. I have no idea what I’mhaving yet, plus I plan to be pregnant at least one more time after this and if that’s a boy, I don’t think he’ll appreciate the pink stroller!

I looked at a few sites with customer reviews. The bugaboo seemsto get decent reviews but in my opinion not as good as it should for the price! I didn’t see a lot of info on the Cosatto. Babies r us carries bothbrands and has an excellent exchange policy. You may need to special order itbut if you’re going to spend that kind of money order it, buy it and return it if youdon’t like it! I picked my stroller based on product reviews by other mom’s andI’m happy with the outcome.

At the very leas t you will end up buying 3 cars eats/boos ters for your child over the course o f the next 10-12 years. I would defin itely gowith an infant seat to start. Some people do start with convertibles, but most donot fit infants well and it really is nice to take a sleeping baby out of the car without waking him or her and if you live in a cold climate it is nice to be able toget baby all buckled into the seat before you go outside. You don’t need to buya travel system. I wish I hadn’t. I ended up with a good carseat, but the bigbulky stroller that I hated. Find an infant seat with a front harness adjuster thatyou like, then find a strolle r that you really like. Most are compatible.

Next, you will need a convertible seat. Definitely go for a higher weight limit seat(65+pounds WITH harness), it should last you to booster age which is at least4 years and 40lbs , but staying in a 5 point harness is m uch safer.

Someone mentioned an Alpha Omega (aka Eddie Bauer, etc) 3-in-1 that goesto 100 lbs. Some manufacturers tout that it is the only seat you will ever need. Itdoes go to 100lbs, but only to 40lbs with the harness. It has very low topharness slots, so most kids outgrow it by height before they are ready for abooster. It is a very narrow seat (on the inside) so mos t kids can’t use it as abooster for as long as they need to be in a booster. Carseats also expire after 6 years, so it defini tely won’t get you to the end of boos ter age.

Check the links below for great message boards with wonderful certifiedcarseat techs who can help you narrow down your choices.

Remember, the BEST carseat is one that fits your child and your vehiclecorrectly and is us ed correctly every time.

Is there a baby travel system which …..?….is compatible with a car seat that is suitable from birth and which can be usedwith an Isofix base, which can also (the base) be retained for use with car seats for larger infants and small children? I don’t think there is but maybe someone knows?

I know that Maxi-Cosi and Britax both make travel systems and Isofix-compatible car seats

for new babies, I guess the question is, are the Isofix bases for these seats compatible withother car seats as the baby grows?

I’m not a big fan of travel systems, but the Chicco is okay, I used that. The Chicco Cortina is so easy to steer one-handed! The travelsystem comes with the Keyfit for the infant seat. I find Graco, Evenflo, etc. to becumbersome and annoying to steer. The Graco infant seat is good, though, and you can clip that into non-Graco s trollers. You have to get an adapter for itto work with some strollers (like Bob, and I think maybe Peg Perego.) Keep inmind that the travel system is used for a limited amount of time. Make sure youlove the stroller when not using it with the infant seat, because you’ll be usingthe stroller a lot longer as jus t a stroller.

I would spend s ome time in a s tore like Babies R Us or Buy Buy Baby and testout strollers . Fold them and open them. Try to steer wi th one hand. If you can’tget to stores like that, read the reviews on the websites. Babies R Us has lotsof reviews.

Absolutely! It is not good for a baby to be in the pos ition of the car seat for long periods. Imagine how uncomfy it would be to be rolledover like that. A carry cot allows them to stretch and move.

the stroller can hold an infant seat facing you and then is a complete stroller for older children, up to 50 lbs i think.

also the easiest i have found to manuver around store racks!

I wasn’t aware that they made ones like that. Usual ly, the travelsystem only includes an infant car seat which the baby grows out of by the time they are 6 to 9 months or so. At that time, they still need a rear-facing carseat, but a bigger one (us ually a convertible car s eat). I like the Gracotravel system b/c the infant car seat has a great safety rating.
