Chapter 1: Overview

This user’s guide is designed to introduce you to the features of the Baby Explorer™ software application. Each chapter provides easy, step-by-step instructions to help you use the application. Wherever possible, the illustrations reflect the application’s standard configurations.

About the Application

The Baby Explorer software application is designed to capture data from an ultrasound machine and process the data to provide a 3D volume rendering of a baby months before it is born. Images can be acquired in either parallel or fan motion directly from a conventional ultrasound system. The captured images form a data set from which a volume is created.

An essential part of volume visualization is the ability to review the data interactively, including the flexibility to rotate, scale and view objects from perspectives that enhance the anatomy of interest. The application provides tools to extract meaningful information in a rapid, non-invasive manner with benefits from improved image quality and visualization clarity.

Workstation Requirements

The Baby Explorer application can run on a standard personal computer with an installed video device. Table 1-1 lists the minimum and recommended workstation requirements. A workstation that is intended to be used in a clinical environment should meet the recommended requirements.

It is important to note that these requirements are only a guideline. Each workstation will have different requirements based on the number of images being viewed, as well as other considerations, such as the operating system services which may be running in the background. To avoid system overload caused by resource contention, we recommend you do not install any other graphic intensive applications on the workstation.

Supported Operating Systems

You can run Release 1.3 of the Baby Explorer application on the Microsoft® Windows® XP SP2 operating system only.

Safety Precautions

This section contains a list of safety precautions that you must be aware of when using the Baby Explorer application.

Repetitive Strain Injury

As with all computer systems, there is a risk of repetitive strain injury if the workstation is used excessively. Repetitive strain injury can include symptoms such as eyestrain, backache, and so on.

WARNING: Excessive use of the workstation may result in repetitive strain injury.

Power and Hardware Failure

Due to uncontrollable events such as power and hardware failure, the workstation must not be the only source of image data for diagnosis. Image data must be available from other sources such as scanner consoles, archives, and/or films.

Caution: The workstation must not be the only source of diagnostic image data.

Magnetic Interference

The images displayed on the workstation’s monitor(s) can be distorted by strong magnetic fields; therefore, the workstation should be positioned outside the 5 Gauss (0.5 mT) magnetic fringe field.

Caution: Position the workstation outside the 5 Gauss (0.5 mT) magnetic fringe field.

Computer Virus Protection

Computer viruses can prevent the application from working properly. We recommend you protect the workstation with anti-virus software. Contact your System Administrator for further details.

Caution: We recommend that you install anti-virus software on your workstation.

About this Guide

This user’s guide assumes that you are familiar with the basic operation of personal computers, such as how to turn them on, how to use the mouse, and how to work in the Microsoft Windows Operating System environment. If you are not familiar with these operations, please refer to the documentation provided with your personal computer.

Visual Cues

• Words shown in large, boldface text, such as Done, indicate buttons and tools that can be clicked with the mouse.

• Words shown in regular, boldface text, such as exit, indicate characters that you must type into the keyboard exactly as they appear (i.e., if you are instructed to type exit, you should type the characters exactly as they are printed).

• Words shown in uppercase, such as ENTER, indicate keys on the keyboard that should be pressed. If several keys appear together separated by hyphens (e.g., CTRL-ALT-DEL), it means that you should press all three keys simultaneously.

• Words shown in italics are used for emphasis.

Notes, Cautions, and Warnings

Note: Notes are used to indicate information which may be helpful or of special interest to the reader.

Caution: Caution messages indicate procedures which, if not observed, could result in loss of data on the hard disk or damage to the equipment. Do not proceed beyond a Caution message until the indicated conditions are fully understood and met.

Chapter 2: Getting Started

This chapter briefly describes how to start the application, use the online help system, and exit the application.

Starting the Application

This section describes how to start the application and load a patient study for review.

> To start the application

1. In the Taskbar, click Start, Programs, Cedara, Baby Explorer Launcher, or double-click the Baby Explorer shortcut on the desktop (shown here).

2. The application starts and opens the 2D window in the foreground and the 3D window in the background.

• For details on how to use the 2D window, refer to Chapter 3.

• For details on how to use the 3D window, refer to Chapter 4.

Using the Help System

The online help system provides quick access to user instructions. The information contained in the help system is the same as that provided in this user’s guide, except that it is in HTML format.

> To use the online help

1. In the 3D window, click the Help button.

2. The application displays the online help in a separate window. Help

3. Use the following features to navigate the help system and find the required topics:

• Click Contents to display a list of topics available, then click the topic you want to view.

• Click Index to display a list of keywords from which you can select a topic. Type in the first few letters of the keyword you are looking for, then double-click the keyword. This is often the easiest way to find a topic.

• Click Search to find all topics that contain a keyword. Type the keyword you want to find, click Go!, then click the desired topic in the list displayed.

• Click Back to return to the last topic viewed.

Exiting the Application

This section describes how to exit the application. Normally, you must close both the 2D window and the 3D window to exit the application, as shown in the procedure below. However, there is an option that allows you to specify that the application close both windows (i.e., exit the application) when you close just the 2D window (see “Setting the Exit Application Option” on page 17).

> To exit the application

1. Click the Close button in the top-right corner of the 2D window.

2. Click the Close button in the top-right corner of the 3D window.

The 2D window provides features for acquiring, reviewing, and deleting patient studies. The currently selected patient is displayed in the Patient Name field at the top of the window. The main part of the 2D window displays the patient’s currently selected sweep.

Creating a New Patient Study

This section describes how to create a new patient study for acquisition.

> To create a new patient study

1. In the 2D window, click the Create New Patient button.

2. The application displays the default Patient Name based on the current date and time.

3. Edit the Patient Name as required and click anywhere in the window.

Acquiring Images

You acquire a sweep of images using the ultrasound machine.

> To acquire a sweep

1. In the 2D window, click LiveVideo.

2. The application starts the live video feed from the connected ultrasound machine.

3. Right-click anywhere on the window to start image acquisition. The application displays a red circle indicating that acquisition has begun.

4. Scan a region of interest. Note that there is a time limit for acquisition. If you exceed the time limit, the application stops the acquisition and emits an audible beep.

5. Right-click to stop the acquisition.

6. The application removes the red circle and displays the acquired image at the bottom of the window.

7. If scan label editing mode is enabled (see “Specifying the Scan Label Options” on page 19), the application displays the Input Scan Information dialog box.

8. Specify the appropriate Scan Type and Face Orientation from the dropdown lists.

9. Click OK.

Scrolling through a Sweep

After you have acquired a sweep, you can review the images in the sweep frame by frame in the 2D window.

> To scroll a sweep

1. Disable the Live Video button.

2. Review the sweep automatically or manually using the tools at the lefthand side of the window:

• To review the sweep automatically, click the Auto-scroll button. The application scrolls through the images from first to last and then back to first again in a repeating pattern.

• To review the sweep manually, turn off the Auto-scroll button and drag the slider in the manual scroll bar up or down.

Selecting the Region of Interest

You can adjust the Region of Interest (ROI) to exclude non-essential information visible in the 2D window. This is especially useful before loading the sweep into the 3D window because it speeds up the loading process.

> To adjust the ROI

1. Click one of the four grab handles on the yellow rectangle that defines the ROI and drag it to the desired position.

Adjusting the Image Settings

You can improve the visualization quality of the currently displayed sweep using the toolbar located at the lefthand side of the 2D window.

Zooming a Sweep

> To zoom the sweep

1. Position the mouse pointer over the Zoom button.

2. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer up or down, as required, to increase or decrease the image zoom.

Adjusting the Contrast/Brightness of a Sweep

> To adjust the contrast/brightness

1. Position the mouse pointer over the Contrast/Brightness button.

2. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer up and down to adjust the contrast, or left and right to adjust the brightness.

Adjusting the Position of a Sweep

> To adjust the sweep position

1. Position the mouse pointer over the Move button.

2. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer up and down to move the image up and down, or left and right to move the image left and right.

Rotating a Sweep

> To rotate the sweep

1. Position the mouse pointer over the Rotate button.

2. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer up or down to rotate the image clockwise or counterclockwise.

Resetting a Sweep

> To reset the sweep to the default image settings

1. Click the Reset button.

2. The application resets the sweep to the image settings selected at acquisition.

Selecting Studies and Sweeps

You can select a different sweep within the patient study you are viewing, or you can select and view a different patient study that is saved on the workstation’s hard drive.

> To select another sweep in the patient study

1. Click the Move to Next Sweep or Move to Previous Sweep button, as required, to select a different sweep in the current patient study. Alternatively, you can select the appropriate thumbnail in the bottom lefthand corner of the screen.

> To select another patient study

1. Click the Move to Next Patient or Move toM Previous Patient button, as required, to select a different patient study.

Deleting Studies and Sweeps

You can delete the selected patient study or a selected sweep within a patient study.

> To delete the current patient study

1. Click the Delete Current Patient button to delete the currently selected patient study.

2. When the application asks if you are sure you want to delete the patient images, click OK.

> To delete the current sweep

1. Click the Delete Current Sweep button to delete the displayed sweep.

2. When the application asks if you are sure you want to delete the selected image, click OK.

Specifying the Live Screen Settings

You can use the Live Screen Settings dialog box to change various settings in the 2D window (i.e., Live Screen) such as the default contrast/brightness and zoom settings and scan label settings. You access the dialog box using the Options button in the 2D window.

Specifying the Behavior of the 2D Window

The Behavior group box allows you to set the AutoHide option and the Exit Application option.

Note: The Stop Video option is currently not implemented.

Setting the AutoHide Option

When this option is selected, the taskbars in the 2D window are hidden and only appear when you position the mouse pointer over the toolbar location.

> To turn on the AutoHide option

1. Click the Options button.

2. In the Behavior group box, select the AutoHide Menubar check box.

3. Click the Save button.

Setting the Exit Application Option

When this option is selected, the application exits (i.e., closes both the 2D window and the 3D window) when you close just the 2D window.

2. In the Behavior group box, select the Exit Application on Capture Close option.


Specifying the Default Contrast/Brightness and Zoom Settings

You can specify the brightness/contrast and zoom settings that you would like to use as the default settings.

> To specify the default contrast/brightness and zoom settings

1. In the 2D window, set the contrast/brightness and zoom settings (see “Adjusting the Image Settings” on page 14) to the values that you would like to use as the default settings.


3. In the Default Brightness and Zoom Values group box, click Get Current Values to set the currently specified settings as the default settings.

4. Click Save.

2. In the Default Brightness and Zoom Values group box, click Reset to Defaults.

Specifying the Scan Label Options

The application gives you the option to attach a scan label to the sweep after acquisition. The scan label identifies the scanning technique used (i.e., parallel or fan) and the face orientation (e.g., Sagittal, ChinLeft). A scan label can help you more easily define the orientation of the images in the 3D window, which in turn can help you isolate the anatomy of interest within the data volume (see “Specifying the Orientation” on page 27).

> To specify the scan label options


2. In the Scan Label group box, select the appropriate radio button:

• Each Scan — Presents the Input Scan Information dialog box immediately after acquisition so that you can specify the scan label manually for each scan (see “Acquiring Images” on page 10).

• Use Current — Attaches a default label that contains the Scan Type and Face Orientation that you select in the two dropdown lists.

• Disabled — Does not attach a scan label.


Specifying the Capture Device Settings

The system requires a video capture device to take the video input from a Composite Video or S-Video signal on the ultrasound machine and convert it to digital data.

You can configure the settings for the video capture device using the Capture Device group box; however, this is normally done during installation so you should not have to adjust it.

Preparing a good 3D volume depends on the quality of the acquired data and may take some time in the beginning. When you learn how to use the 3D features, the task will become fast and easy.

The 3D window provides three slice (or MPR) views, a 3D volume view, and a control panel for volume visualization. A toolbar appears on the right side of a view when the mouse pointer is positioned over that view. The toolbars are called the Slice View Toolbar and the 3D View Toolbar.

Loading a Sweep into the 3D Window

This section describes how to load the current sweep into the 3D window and view it as a volume.

> To load a sweep into the 3D window

1. In the 2D window, adjust the ROI to contain only the information you need (see “Selecting the Region of Interest” on page 13).

2. Click the Load Current Sweep into 3D button, or double-click the image.

Returning to the 2D Window

You can return to the 2D window at any time.

1. Click the Live button.

Using the Studies Browser

You use the Studies Browser to retrieve and delete patient studies that are saved on the workstation’s hard drive.

Retrieving a Sweep

You can use the Studies Browser to retrieve and view a sweep within a patient study. You can only retrieve one sweep at a time.

In some cases, it may be more convenient to select saved files from the 2D window (see “Selecting Studies and Sweeps” on page 15) since you can see the 2D images displayed in the window.

1. In the 3D window, click the File... button.

2. In the Studies Browser dialog box, navigate to a folder that contains the patient study you want to access (e.g., v_2003-09-09_15-43-18). The study folder is always labelled with the date and time the study was acquired. This is the default name provided by the application when you create a new study (see “Creating a New Patient Study” on page 10). The name that you entered for the patient is displayed in the Patient Name text box.

3. In the list on the right side of the dialog box, select the sweep that you want to view.

4. Click Select.

5. The application loads the sweep into the 3D window.

Deleting a Sweep

You can use the Studies Browser to delete a sweep within a patient study. You can only delete one sweep at a time. In some cases, it may be more convenient to delete patient studies from the 2D window since the whole study can be deleted at once (see “Deleting Studies and Sweeps” on page 16).

> To delete a sweep

1. In the 3D window, click the File... button.

2. In the Studies Browser dialog box, navigate to a folder that contains saved patient studies (e.g., Studies folder).

3. In the list on the right side of the dialog box, select the patient name you want to delete. The selected name appears in the Patient Name text box.

4. Click Delete.

5. When the application asks if you are sure you want to delete the patient study, click OK.

Specifying the Sway Parameters

You can specify the angle range and the angle steps for the sway view (see “Swaying the 3D Volume” on page 28).

> To specify the sway parameters

1. In the 3D window, click the Settings button.

2. In the Review Settings dialog box, click the Angle Range arrows to change the angle of rotation. The maximum range is 90º.

3. Click the Angular Step arrows to change the number of degrees in each step. This affects the rotation speed. The maximum number of degrees in an Angular Step is the same as the number that you specify for the Angle Range value.

4. Click Apply Change to apply your changes.

5. Click OK to close the dialog box.

Changing the Data Settings

Some ultrasound datasets require that you change their scan type, slice order, etc., using the tools provided in the Data group box. The data are loaded into the 3D window in the last saved data settings.

Changing the Scan Type

You may need to change the scan type based on the technique used to acquire the data.

> To change the scan type

1. In the Data group box, click the appropriate button according to the scan type:

• If the images were acquired using parallel technique, click the Parallel Sweep button.

• If the images were acquired using fan technique, click the Fan Sweep button.

2. The application displays the data according to the selected scan type.

Reversing the Slice Order

You can reverse the slice order, if required.

> To reverse the slice order

1. In the Data group box, click the Reverse Slice Order button to flip the slices.

Smoothing the Volume

The Smooth function reduces the image resolution and can improve visualization, making the roughness of the surface less apparent.

1. In the Data group box, click the Smooth button.

2. The application reduces the image resolution to smooth the volume. If the visualization is not improved, turn the Smooth button off.

Changing the Slice Width

You can change the width of the image slices.

> To change the slice width

1. In the Data group box, adjust the width of the volume:

• click and drag the slider in the Width scroll bar; or

• click the arrows to adjust the Width percentage.

Adjusting the Image Display Settings

You can adjust the image orientation, opacity, color, and so on, using the tools provided in the Image group box.

Specifying the Orientation

Since the anatomy of interest is located within a data volume, it may not be visible when you load it into the 3D window. In order to view the anatomy of interest, you need to specify the orientation. A scan label can indicate the correct orientation (see “Specifying the Scan Label Options” on page 19). If a scan label is not provided, you can usually determine the orientation in the 2D window by turning on Auto-scroll (see “Scrolling through a Sweep” on page 11).

> To specify the orientation

1. In the Image group box, select one of the eight orientation buttons based on the scan label. If a scan label is not provided, return to the 2D window and use Auto-scroll to replay the sweep and view the baby’s orientation.

2. If the orientation information is correct, the baby’s face will be positioned toward you. This may take a few moments to display. You may need to adjust the position slightly.

Adjusting the Opacity Manually

3D ultrasound datasets are typically fuzzy and contain a substantial amount of speckle, which makes extraction of continuous and smooth 3D surfaces difficult. The application provides opacity tools to reduce this problem.

The opacity is affected by the current contrast and brightness settings (see “Adjusting the Contrast and Brightness of the Volume and the Slice Views” on page 36). Results are also affected if the Smooth function has been activated (see “Smoothing the Volume” on page 25). Some opacity adjustments produce little effect in Lighted rendering mode (see,“Selecting the Rendering Mode” on page 35). The opacity tools are not available in Brightest rendering mode.

> To adjust the opacity

1. In the Image group box, adjust the Translucency scroll bar first to make the outer layers transparent:

• click and drag the slider in the scroll bar; or

• click the arrows to adjust the percentage.

2. Adjust the Threshold and Surface Cleaner scroll bars, as above, until you achieve optimal visual results.

Adjusting the Opacity Automatically

You can set the opacity and contrast/brightness settings automatically for all views.

> To auto-adjust opacity and contrast/brightness

1. In the Image group box, click the Auto-Adjust button.

2. The application applies default opacity and contrast/brightness settings to all views.

Swaying the 3D Volume

Sway view provides quick animation of the 3D volume. The application also allows you to record a simple animation of the 3D volume (see “Recording a Simple Animation” on page 40).

You can sway the volume within the 3D volume view or in full screen view. You can also specify the sway parameters in the Review Settings dialog box (see “Recording a Simple Animation” on page 40). These parameters affect both normal and full screen sway view. During sway view, all other settings are deactivated.

1. In the Image group box, click the Sway View button.

2. The application sways the 3D volume.

> To select full screen sway view

1. In the Image group box, click the Full Screen button.

2. The application displays the swaying 3D volume in the full screen.

3. To stop the swaying and view a static image, click anywhere on the screen. You can click again to reactivate the swaying.

4. To return to normal sway view, right-click anywhere on the screen.

Changing the Color Scheme

The application provides nine different color schemes so that you can select the best visual display for the 3D volume.

> To change the color scheme

1. In the Image group box, select a color from the dropdown list.

Restoring the Image Display Settings

You can restore all of the image display settings to their original state when you first loaded the dataset into the 3D window. The settings include orientation, opacity, contrast/brightness, geometry, position and, potentially, clipper settings.

If you only want to reset the last operation you performed, use the Undo tool in the 3D toolbar. The Undo tool is also available on slice toolbars when you point to the Balloon icon.

2. The application restores the image display parameters to their original state upon loading.

Rotating the Volume and the Slice Views

The application allows you to rotate the 3D volume view and the slice views to best visualize the anatomy of interest. The changes you make to one view are applied to all views. You can rotate the volume and the slice views in several different ways.

> To rotate the volume in three dimensions

1. Position the mouse pointer directly on the 3D volume.

2. The mouse pointer appears as shown here.

3. Click and drag the mouse pointer to rotate the 3D volume.

4. The slice views update to reflect the change.

> To rotate the volume or a slice view in two dimensions about the screen axis

1. Position the mouse pointer outside the 3D volume or the slice view.


3. Click and drag the mouse pointer right or left to twist the image clockwise or counterclockwise about the screen axis.

4. The other views update to reflect the change.

> To rotate the slice views about the vertical image axis

1. In the Slice View toolbar, position the mouse pointer over the Rotate Around Vertical Axis button.

2. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer left and right to rotate the slice views about the vertical image axis.

3. All views update to reflect the change.

1. In the Slice View toolbar, position the mouse pointer over the Rotate Around Horizontal Axis button.

2. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer up and down to rotate the views about the horizontal image axis.

Clipping the Volume

You can clip the volume to separate structures of interest from the surrounding image data and create a new volume of interest (VOI). The best view to use to clip the volume is the sagittal view when it is displaying the baby’s profile because it allows you to view the baby’s face after creating the new VOI.

The application provides two tools for clipping the volume:

• Front Cut Plane tool

• Bubble tool

Using the Front Cut Plane Tool

This tool allows you to slice inside the volume so you can view anatomical features that are difficult to visualize.

> To use the Front Cut Plane tool

1. In the 3D toolbar, click the Front Cut Plane button.

2. The button changes to that shown here and scissors appear on the left side of the top two slice views to indicate the cut plane.

3. Click and drag the scissors to the right.

4. The area to the left of the cut plane becomes transparent in the 3D volume view.

5. When you are satisfied with the 3D volume, click the New VOI from Current Clippers button on the 3D toolbar.

Using the Bubble Tool

This tool allows you to view only the structures of interest by cutting away image data that is not inside the bubble you define. This tool is available in 3D View toolbar and in the Slice View toolbar.

> To use the Bubble tool

1. In one of the toolbars, click the Bubble button to activate it.

2. The button appears as shown here so that you can edit the bubble in the x and y axes. A green bubble also appears on the slice views.

3. Change the size of the bubble in the following ways:

• In one of the slice views, click and drag one of the grab handles on the bubble.

• In one of the toolbars, position the mouse pointer over the button in the toolbar. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer left and right to edit the bubble in the x-axis, or up and down to edit the bubble in the y-axis.

4. Click the Bubble button again.

5. The button appears as shown here so that you can edit the bubble in the z-axis.

6. In one of the toolbars, position the mouse pointer over the button. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer left and right, or up and down, to edit the bubble in the z-axis.

7. When you are satisfied with the 3D volume, click the New VOI from Current Clippers button on the 3D toolbar.

Segmenting the Volume

Because the volume is presented in three dimensions, any structure can obscure the view of the anatomy of interest. You can segment the volume to remove non-essential tissues. The application provides two tools for segmenting the volume:

• Scalpel tool

• Balloon tool

Using the Scalpel Tool

This tool allows you to remove unwanted tissues from the volume. You can draw a region of interest (ROI) to specify the tissue that you want to remove or the tissue that you want to keep.

> To use the Scalpel tool

1. Rotate the volume so that you can see the structure that is obscuring the view, but it is not overlying the area that will be a ROI.

2. In the 3D View toolbar, click the Scalpel button.


4. In one of the viewports, draw a ROI to specify the tissue you want to remove or the tissue you want to keep. You can right-click at any time to cancel the drawing operation. To draw the ROI:

• click and drag the mouse pointer to draw the region; or

• click the starting point, move to the next point and click again, then continue moving and clicking to draw a polygon around the region.

5. Double-click to end the drawing operation.

6. The mouse pointer appears as a red “x” and the application tints the selected region. You can position the pointer inside or outside the region you specified. The region that is tinted is the region that you want to remove.

7. Click to delete the tinted region.

8. The 3D volume updates to reflect the region that you removed.

Using the Balloon Tool

This tool allows you to add tissues that were inadvertently removed.

> To use the Balloon tool

1. In one of the Slice View toolbars, click the Balloon button.


3. In one of the slice viewports, draw a ROI to specify the region that you want to be added to the volume. You cannot define the ROI in the 3D volume view. To draw the ROI:

• Click and drag the mouse pointer to draw the region; or

• click the starting point, move to the next point and click again, then continue moving and clicking to draw a polygon around the region.

4. Double-click to end the drawing operation and add the region to the volume.

Selecting the Rendering Mode

The application offers three different rendering modes:

• Shaded — Shaded mode relies more on the voxel intensity of the original volume data.

• Brightest — The volume in Brightest mode can reveal more details required for segmentation but this rendering mode is not normally suitable for the final 3D volume.

• Lighted — Lighted mode, which relies on surface orientations of anatomical objects, provides photo-realistic effects.

The application defaults to the last rendering mode selected.

You can apply fade functionality, which is designed to enhance visualization, in each of the rendering modes.

1. Position the mouse pointer over the 3D volume view to activate the toolbar.

2. Select the desired rendering mode button from the toolbar.

3. The application renders the volume based on the rendering mode you select.

> To apply a fade

1. Position the mouse pointer over the currently selected rendering mode button.

2. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer up and down to adjust the fade.

Adjusting the Contrast and Brightness of the Volume and the Slice Views

You can adjust the contrast and brightness of the 3D volume and the slice views. When you adjust the contrast and brightness of one of the slice views, all three slice views are adjusted.

> To adjust the contrast/brightness

1. In one of the toolbars, position the mouse pointer over the Contrast/Brightness button.

2. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer up and down to adjust the contrast, or left and right to adjust the brightness.

Zooming the Volume and Slice Views

You can zoom the 3D volume or the slice views. When you zoom one of the slice views, all three views are adjusted.

1. In one of the toolbars, position the mouse pointer over the Zoom button.

2. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer up and down, as required, to increase or decrease the image zoom.

Moving the Volume and Slice Views

You can adjust the position of the 3D volume or the slice views in several different ways.

> To move the volume and the slice views

1. Position the mouse pointer directly on a slice view.


3. Click and drag the mouse pointer to reposition the volume within the viewport.


> To move the volume using the 3D View toolbar

1. In the 3D View toolbar, position the mouse pointer over the Move Volume L/R U/D button.

2. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer left and right, or up and down, to reposition the 3D volume within the viewport.


> To move the slice views using the 3D View toolbar

1. In the 3D View toolbar, click the Move Volume L/R U/D button to activate the Move Volume Front/Back button.

2. Position the mouse pointer over the Move Volume Front/Back button.

3. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse pointer left and right, or up and down, to reposition the slice views within the viewports.

Saving an Image File

You can save an image in JPG or BMP format (for 3D volume views only). Any image files you save can be included in an HTML Report (see “Generating a Report” on page 42).

> To save an image file

1. In the Print/Save group box, click the Save to a File button.

2. In the Save the 3D Image dialog box, select the folder where you want to save the image file. The default is the current patient study folder.

3. In the File Name field, type a name for the image file, if required.

4. From the Save as Type dropdown list, select the required file type (JPG or BMP).

5. Click Save.

Printing Images

You can print the views displayed on the screen provided that a standard printer is connected to the workstation. The settings that you specify in the Content area of the Baby Explorer Print dialog box define which views are included when you print.

1. In the Print/Save group box, click the Print... button.

2. In the Content group box, select one or both of the following check boxes to specify the views that you want to print.

Note that when you select either checkbox, the Baby Explorer Print dialog box disappears from view, generates the images to be printed, and re-appears. Also note that you should not switch to another application while the Baby Explorer application is generating images, otherwise the images to be printed may not appear properly.

• Select Full Screen — If you select this checkbox, the application prints all of the views (i.e., the 3D volume view and the slice views). If you do not select this checkbox, the application prints only the 3D volume view.

• Select All Saved Views — If you select this checkbox, the application prints all of the 3D views that you have saved using the Save button (see “Working with Saved Views” on page 46). If you do not have any saved views, this checkbox is not applicable.

3. Click the Starting View arrows to specify the view from which printing will start. The number of images that are printed on one page depends on the layout that you select from the Layout dropdown list. For example, if you have four saved views in a 1X2 layout, and you specify 2 for the Starting View, then printing will start from the second view, and only the second and third views will be printed on one page.

4. From the Orientation dropdown list, select the paper orientation.

5. From the Layout dropdown list, select the required page layout.

6. If required, click Print Setup... and select the printer and printer settings.

7. Click Print.

8. The application prints the specified images on one page.

Recording a Simple Animation

You can record a simple animation of the 3D volume to an AVI file. Any AVI files you save can be included in an HTML Report (see “Generating a Report” on page 42).

1. In the Print/Save group box, click the Simple Animation button.

2. In the Simple Animation dialog box, click the Play/Stop Animation Preview button.

3. During the animation preview:

• Select the desired rotation — Your choices are Right rotation, Loop right-left rotation, Down rotation, Loop down-up rotation.

• Specify the Angular Step and Range — The higher the Angular Step, the faster the rotation speed. The Range is the angle of rotation. The maximum range is 180º.

4. When you are satisfied with the animation, click the Record Animation to AVI File button.

5. In the Choose a Filename to Save AVI dialog box, select the folder where you want to save the animation file. The default is the current patient study folder.

6. In the File Name field, type a name for the animation file. The default name is the name of the sweep appended with the Angular Step (i.e., 10) and Range of rotation (i.e., 180).

7. Click Save to start recording.

8. When recording is finished, the application displays the text “Video Clip” in the Simple Animation dialog box to indicate that the animation has been saved.

9. You can click the Review Most Recent Saved Video button to review the saved animation, if required. When you are finished reviewing, click Close to close the animation window.

10. In the Simple Animation dialog box, click Done.

Generating a Report

The application allows you to create an HTML report complete with images and animation files. If you want to include image and animation files, you must save them first (see “Saving an Image File” on page 38 and “Recording a Simple Animation” on page 40). Note that files saved as BMP files are displayed as JPEG files in HTML Report Builder.

> To create an HTML report

1. In the Print/Save group box, click the HTML Report button.

2. The application asks if you want to include the 2D AVI file which can take some time.

• Click Yes if you want to include the 2D AVI file.

• Click No if you do not want to include the 2D AVI file. The 3D AVI file will still be included into the report if one was previously saved.

3. In the HTML Report Builder, the application lists the image and animation files you saved for the study. In this example, the first AVI file (i.e., demo2.avi) is the 2D animation and the second AVI file (i.e., demo2_10-180.avi) is the 3D animation.

4. You can select a file in the list so that you can review it. The application displays the selected file in the Image and Video Browser pane.

5. Click and drag the file you want to include in the report to one of the small panes in the HTML Report Outline group box. Enter comments into the corresponding text box, if desired.

6. Repeat Step 5 for any other files you want to include in the report. You can click Append Page to create more empty panes for the files.

8. If you want to preview the report, click Preview HTML. You must save the report before you can view it.

9. In Windows Explorer, you can click one of the images to run the animation in Windows Media Player or to enlarge the image file.

10. When you are finished reviewing the report, close Windows Explorer.

Working with Saved Views

You can save the current view so that you can reload it at a later time. After you save a view, you can apply it to the current view to update all of the display parameters. The application provides a browser so that you can save and manage multiple saved views.

> To save a view

1. Set the 3D volume view as desired.

2. In the Saved Views group box, click the Save button.

3. The application saves the current view and places it in the browser window.

> To apply a saved view

1. In the Saved Views group box, click the Apply button or double-click the saved view that is currently displayed in the browser.

2. The application applies the saved view to the 3D volume.

> To replace a saved view

1. Set the 3D volume view as desired.

2. In the Saved Views group box, use the arrow buttons in the browser to select the saved view that you want to overwrite.

3. In the Saved Views group box, click the Replace button.

4. The application replaces the selected saved view with the view currently displayed in the 3D window.
