Brook House in a Winter

Wonderland

During February, the weather decided to take a quick turn from sunshine and warmth into a plunge of snow and ice. Whilst being

incredibly cold, the scenery could not be more beautiful. Brook House became our very own Winter Wonderland.

Story Ivy 102nd Birthday

Ivy Austin was born on the 2nd of April 1916 at Queen Charlottes Hospital Paddington. She lived in Willesden as a child (Ambleside Road), and then moved to Ilex Road in Willesden as a little girl with her mother, father, 5 brothers, 1 sister and adopted brother! Her sister however died at the age of 16, so she mainly grew up with her younger brothers. She met and married her husband, Henry, on the 11th of May 1940 at St Matthews Church Harlesden. They went on to have two children, a son called Roy and a daughter called Vera. They lived with her mother, then moved across the road, and then moved down the road, so in fact she lived in 3 houses on ilex Rd. They then moved to Northolt in 1975, but unfortunately her husband died on the 1st of April 1976, one year after they moved to their dream home; a bungalow in Northolt.

Ivy had lived through the whole of the second world war, and used to recall her husband being in the army. She also used to talk about the air raids and the bombings that happened around them, in fact 2 houses were flattened near to where she lived on Ilex Road. Sadly, the war was very stressful for her. Not only was her husband in the army, her brothers were also away fighting and 2 of them were taken as Japanese prisoner of war and were badly tortured, which had a big effect on her. Early on in her life, Ivy worked as a post lady, and then moved into working for Heinz. She then worked in a wool shop later in life and she loved it. She was a great athlete as a young woman, she loved running. She loved knitting and dressmaking, and even made her daughter’s wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses. She has always supported Arsenal Football Club, same as her son, her husband and daughter on the other hand were QPR fans, so there was always a great rivalry in the household.

For Ivy, her proudest moment was becoming a grandmother to her daughters 2 sons; Lee and Dean, she loved looking after them and playing with them, especially taking them away. She was also very proud of her son, Roy, who was an athlete and had run for England and Wales. He moved to Wales in 1969 and then to Malta so she did not see much of him. She now has 2 grandchildren; Lee and Dean. She has 3 great grandchildren; Sommer, Courtney and Liam, who all love her very much. She was living at Northolt in her beloved bungalow before she came to Brook House, she had lived there since 1975 and had lived alone since 1976. She moved to Brook House in October 2012 after spending lots of time in hospitals, now being with us for nearly 6 years.

Ivy had her 102nd birthday on the 4th of April this year. She is a wonderful resident who is loved by all, here’s to more happy years and beautiful smiles in the future.

Humour: Jokes for Folks

Three Senior Pals:

Three seniors are out for a stroll.

One of them remarks, “It’s windy.”

Another reply, “No way. It’s Thursday.”

The last one says, “Me too. Let’s have a soda.”

The old man replied, “You’re the eighth.”

The Old Days:

Grandpa was telling his young grandson what life was like when he was a boy.

"In the winter we’d ice skate on our pond. In the summer we could swim in the

pond, and pick berries in the woods. We’d swing on an old tire my dad hung from a

tree on a rope. And we had a pony we rode all over the farm."

The little boy was amazed, and sat silently for a minute. Finally, he said,

"Granddad, I wish I'd gotten to know you a lot sooner!"

Joke About Getting Older:

“Sugar why don’t you sit down by the table and we’ll start supper.” Said

Dorothy to her Husband of 50 years. “Sure thing,” said her husband settling

himself down.

“Now darling, would you like the soup first or the salad?” Questioned Dorothy.

“Umm I guess I’ll take the soup.” He responded.

After a whole meal of one endearing term after another, their guest Bob couldn’t

contain his curiosity any longer. Bob snuck into the kitchen and asked,

“Dorothy do you always talk to your husband like that?”

“Bob, I’ll be honest with you,” Dorothy replied. “It’s been five years now, I just

can’t remember his name, and I am just too embarrassed to ask him!”

Hearing Better Now:

An elderly man was having hearing problems and went to see a specialist.

The doctor fitted him with some hearing aids that brought his hearing back to full

strength.

After a few weeks the man came back to make sure the new equipment was

working properly, which it was.

The hearing specialist said, “It all seems perfect. Your family should be delighted

you can hear everything now.”

“Oh no,” the man responded. “I haven’t told any of them. I just sit quietly,

listening carefully. I’ve changed my will four times.”

A few words from Brook House

Activities at our Home:

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities

programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise. So please, if you have any suggestions, don’t be afraid to contact and

speak to our Activity team (Alison Khurana) and share your thoughts.

We would also like to thank all our volunteers who dedicate their free time to help us with a plethora of tasks. If you would be interested in volunteering and helping us, please contact Alison Khurana at:
