    Saved data in vehicle

A large number of electronic componentsof your vehicle contain data memories. These data memories save temporary orpermanent technical information on

    Vehicle condition

    Events

    Fault

This technical information generallydocuments the condition of acomponent, a module, a system or theenvironment. These are, for example:

Operating modes of system compon-ents. These include, for example, filllevels.

Status messages of the vehicle andof its individual components. Theseinclude, for example, wheel speed/speed, movement deceleration, lat-eral acceleration, throttle pedal posi-tion.

Malfunctions and defects in import-ant system components. These in-clude, for example, light, brakes.

Reactions and operating modes ofthe vehicle in special driving situ-ations. These include, for example, triggering of an airbag and use of thestability control systems.

Environmental conditions. These in-clude, for example, the outside tem-perature.

The data are exclusively of a technicalnature and can be used to

to support the detection and elimina-tion of errors and defects,

to analyse vehicle functions, e.g. fol-lowing an accident,

    to optimise vehicle functions.

Movement profiles over distances drivencannot be put together from these data.If you make use of services, they canread technical information out of theevent and error data memories.

    Services are, for example

Running in the chassis and drive train

    Note:

The way in which the chassis and drivetrain of the new bus are treated duringthe first 3,000 miles (5,000 km) is crit-ical to the bus' future performance andservice life.

    Note:

The load to which the bus is subjectedduring this period should be increasedonly gradually. The maintenance and lub-rication tasks specified in the Mainten-ance Record should be carried out con-scientiously.

    Caution:

Do not place the engine under full loadduring the running-in period. Up to1,200 miles (2,000 km): run in withcare. Drive at no higher than 3/4 of themaximum rpm in each gear. After 1,200miles (2,000 km): slowly increase to the

economic rpm in each gear. During therunning-in period, do not drive the bus forlong distances at the same road speed =same rpm. Varying engine speeds andtherefore varying loads demanded of theentire drive train are favourable to therunning-in of the bus.

    Starting the engine

The parking brake must be applied.Transmission in neutral.

    Note:

At outside temperatures of below -20 °C,preheat the engine with the water heater(refer to “Heating/ventilation/air-condi-tioning control panel”).

    Note:

The bus is equipped with an immobiliseras standard. The engine cannot be star-ted without one of the authorised keys.

    Note:

To obtain electronic start authorisation inbuses equipped with an alcohol interlock, the operating instructions supplied by thedevice manufacturer and the informationshown on its display screen should beobserved. The freedom of movement of the ped-als must not be restricted. The operat-ing safety and roadworthiness of the buswould otherwise be at risk. Objects couldfall and get caught between the pedals ifyou were to accelerate or brake suddenly, with the result that you would no longerbe able to brake, depress the clutch ped-al or accelerate. You could cause an acci-dent and endanger yourself and others.

Check the freedom of movement ofthe pedals.

    Danger.

Where floormats and carpets are fitted, make sure that these are safely securedagainst slipping and that the pedals havesufficient clearance.

    Danger.

Do not stow any objects in the driver'sfootwell.

    Danger.

Stow and secure all loose objects insuch a way that they cannot get intothe driver's footwell when the bus is inmotion.

    Perform a brake test.

    Danger.

Test the service brake immediately afterpulling away.

  • Operation

    Driving

Keep an eye on the rev counter whiledriving.

    Note:

Keep within the economical operatingrange. Make sure that the engine speeddoes not enter the danger zone (redzone).

Notes for buses with GO 250 -8transmission:

    Danger.

The bus is equipped with a creep func-tion. When the service brake is releasedwith the creep function activated, the buswill creep forwards independently with theengine continuing to run at idling speed. If the engine speed drops below approx-imately 550 rpm due to increased drivingresistance and/or you operate the ser-vice brake at a low engine speed, theelectronics will disengage the clutch auto-matically. This would interrupt the flowof tractive power and the vehicle couldbegin to roll back, e.g. on an uphill gradi-ent.

    Note:

For as long as both the accelerator pedaland the brake pedal remain fully released, the clutch will stay closed and the vehiclewill creep at idling speed. This works inthe 1st and 2nd gears.

    Caution:

The least wearing on the clutch is idlecreeping. In stop-start traffic, therefore, the brake pedal should be used as spar-ingly as possible (under consideration ofthe road and traffic situation) so that thevehicle always creeps at idling speed. Tokeep the driving speed as low as pos-sible, it is possible to shift manually into1st gear. If the speed of the bus is keptlow by means of the brake pedal, theclutch will start to slip. This would res-ult in increased clutch wear. If the brakepedal is depressed rather more forcefully(more than 10% brake pedal travel), theclutch will open so far that it no longerslips.

    Note:

In the event of increased loading on theclutch, an alert (grey) will appear on thedisplay screen. If the load persists, awarning alert (yellow) will appear and thecreep function will be deactivated auto-matically. This is designed to rule out anoverloading of the clutch by the creepfunction.

Stop the bus - Shift the transmis-sion into neutral - Apply the parkingbrake. Press start/stop button (1) inas far as the stop.

    Danger.

There is a risk of fire and burns due tothe high exhaust temperatures and thehot exhaust pipe for the auxiliary heating. For this reason, avoid parking the buswhere ignitable material (e.g. dry grass, leaves, etc.) is in close proximity to theexhaust system, engine and auxiliary heat-ing exhaust system.

    Caution:

To avoid engine damage, do not underany circumstances switch the engine offimmediately after a long period of driv-ing under full load (elevated coolant tem-perature, e.g. after hill climbing). Leavethe engine running at idling speed for ap-proximately 1 to 2 minutes to allow theexhaust gas turbocharger to cool down.

    Towing

    Danger.

Only authorised specialists (recovery ser-vices) are permitted to tow away broken-down buses. The rules and regulations inthe country concerned must be observed.

    Danger.

In buses with the Electronic Stability Pro-gram (ESP), this function must be deac-tivated without exception - refer to the“Operation” section.

    Caution:

Special measures are required in orderto protect the transmission if the bus isto be towed: For safety reasons the pro-peller shaft must always be removed. Thepropeller shaft securing screws at theaxle flange must be removed and thoseat the transmission flange secured againstdisplacement.

    Trailer towing

    Danger.

Proceed with utmost care and cautionwhen hitching up the trailer. Make surethat no persons are present between thetrailer and vehicle as the vehicle is be-ing reversed into engagement with thetrailer. The overrun brake of a trailer canrebound uncontrollably when in overrunmode. To reduce the risk of serious injur-ies, do not uncouple any trailer that hasan overrun brake if the trailer has over-run and the overrun brake is applied. Atrailer that has been coupled to the tow-ing vehicle incorrectly could break away.A correctly coupled trailer must stand ho-rizontal behind the vehicle. Use a trailerwith a height-adjustable drawbar if ne-cessary. The maximum permissible nose-weight and rear axle load of the bus mustnot be exceeded.

    Note:

Observe the operating instructions issuedby the trailer manufacturer.

    Note:

If the trailer coupling is a detachablecoupling, the operating instructions is-sued by the trailer coupling manufacturermust be observed.

    Note:

It is prohibited to couple a turntable trail-er, any trailer equipped with ESP or anytrailer having a permissible gross weightof over 3.5 t.

    Note:

The maximum permissible noseweight is250 kg.

    Loading a trailer

Observe the following values whenloading the trailer:

the permissible gross weight of thetrailer

the permissible trailer load of thevehicle and the trailer tow hitch

    the permissible noseweight

the permissible rear axle load of thetowing vehicle

the permissible gross weight of boththe towing vehicle and the trailer

The definitive maximum permissible val-ues are listed in the vehicle documentsand on the identification plates of thetrailer tow hitch, trailer and vehicle. Ifthere are discrepancies between any ofthese sources, always consider the low-est value to be valid.

    Driving with a trailer

    Driving with a trailer

The following changes in handlingcharacteristics can be observed whendriving with a trailer attached:

    acceleration and gradient-climbingcapability are reduced

    braking distance is increased

    sensitivity to crosswinds is increased

    directional stability is adversely af-fected

    fuel consumption is increased

Avoid driving a vehicle/trailer combina-tion faster than 80 km/h, even in coun-tries where higher speeds are permitted.

Maintain a greater distance from thevehicle in front than you would whendriving without a trailer.

Avoid sudden braking where possible.Brake gently at first to allow the trail-er to run on and quickly increase yourbraking force.

If the trailer begins to swing from side toside:

    release the accelerator pedal

    do not countersteer

    brake if necessary

do not attempt to draw the vehicle/trailer combination out by accelerat-ing

The gradient-climbing capabilities from astandstill refer to sea level. When driv-ing in mountainous areas, you shouldbear in mind that the power output ofthe engine and thus its gradient-climb-ing capability decrease with increasingaltitude.

On long and steep downhill gradients, select a lower gear/shift range in goodtime. This makes use of the braking ef-fect of the engine, reducing the amountof braking effort required to maintain asafe speed. The load on the brake sys-tem is therefore reduced, which helps toprevent the brakes from overheating andwearing too rapidly. If additional brak-ing effort is required, do not depress the

brake pedal with one continuous press, but operate it at intervals.

    Danger.

While the vehicle is in motion, never keepthe brake pedal continuously depressed,e.g. avoid allowing the brakes to slip as aconsequence of you resting your foot onthe pedal. This causes the brake systemto overheat, increases the braking dis-tance and may result in a complete lossof braking effect.

    M47_00-0055-71

The BlueTec® exhaust gas cleaning sys-tem essentially comprises a supply tank,a catalytic converter and an AdBlue®metering system. It is monitored andcontrolled electronically. Pollutants inthe exhaust gas are converted into en-vironmentally friendly substances by theaddition of AdBlue® and the catalyticconverter integrated into the silencer.

The illustration above shows filler open-ing (1) for the AdBlue® supply tank (nextto the diesel tank).

    Note:

AdBlue® is consumed at a rate of ap-proximately 3 % of the rate of diesel fuelconsumption. It is recommended that theAdBlue® supply tank also be refilled atevery regular refuelling stop.

To function correctly, the BlueTec® ex-haust gas cleaning system requires theaddition of a reducing agent (AdBlue®).The addition of AdBlue® does not formpart of the routine scope of bus main-tenance – it is the responsibility of thevehicle operators to ensure that the Ad-Blue® supply tank is regularly replen-ished. Filling and operating the bus withAdBlue® is mandatory for compliancewith emission regulations and is thusone of the conditions for the road trafficapproval of the bus. The road traffic ap-proval of the bus will be invalidated ifthe bus is operated without AdBlue®. Itwould then be against the law to operatethe bus on public roads. In some coun-tries, operation of the bus without Ad-Blue® may be considered to be a crimin-al offence or a violation of administrative

law punishable by fine. Support in thepurchase or operation of the bus, i.e. taxrelief, road tax, may also be invalidatedretrospectively. This may be the caseboth in the country in which the vehicleis registered and in other countries inwhich the vehicle is operated.
