Future Multi-Purpose Turf Field

Zach GilpinWelcome class oF 2015

It’s been a long time coming, but as Sam Cooke crooned fifty years ago, “A change is gonna come.”

In the spring of 2014, Bridgton Academy launched our “Rise, Sons of Bridgton” Capital Campaign (RSB). This $6 million comprehensive campaign is focused on the full revitalization and modernization of all Academy athletic facilities, including the construction of a new 16,000-square foot Strength & Fitness Center. This project-based campaign will have a transformational impact on our Academy’s facilities and programming, enabling our historic school to stay competitive and current in the 21st century educational marketplace. Most importantly, this campaign will allow us to provide the best teaching environment possible for our student-athletes.

Thanks to the amazing philanthropic support of Academy alumni, parents, and friends, BA is poised to break ground on the first projects of our campaign:

• How did you hear about BA? I heard about Bridgton Academy from a student who graduated in last year’s class. Tanner Hyland '14 played on the basketball team last year, and I was pretty close with him. I also learned quite a bit about Bridgton from Coach Lesure and Coach McClure. All three of them helped a lot in the process of getting me here.

• What made you decide to attend BA?There were many factors in my decision to come to Bridgton. One of them was having the opportunity to play for Coach Lesure and Coach McClure. I got to know them quite well before I arrived, and I know that they can help me take my game to the next level. Another factor was being close to my family for one more year before I head off to college. My family knows I’m only a phone call away.

• First impressions? So far, it’s been awesome. I have no complaints. The food is awesome, the teachers are very nice, and I can honestly say I haven’t met a person whose company I don’t enjoy. It’s a great feeling to be at a place where everybody has very common goals. You can tell that every teacher really wants all the students to succeed. Likewise, all the students want their peers to succeed as well.

• What are your goals? My academic goals are to prepare myself the best I can for Bentley University. More specifically I’d like to develop good study habits here that I can take with me to Bentley. My goals for the basketball team would be for each individual to maximize his own potential on the basketball court. We can accomplish that by working as hard as we can every day and being grateful for the opportunity we’ve been given. Someone has sacrificed something for us to be here. We can’t take that for granted. • Do you have a message to send home?If I had to give my friends and family a message, I’d just want to say that I’m in good hands down here. I’m surrounded by great people, and I’m doing well!

Rise, Sons of BridgtonRise, Sons of Bridgtonthe construction of a 90,000-square foot multi-purpose field and new turf baseball infield! This spring, Bridgton Academy will install our first-ever artificial turf facility for lacrosse and football, as well as create a turf infield for our baseball team. These exciting installations will be complete and ready for the incoming Class of 2016, having an immediate and significant impact on our student experience.

“Rise, Sons of Bridgton” is a joint effort between the Academy and those who believe in our mission to inspire change. Your support is the catalyst for our success. Donors at all levels can have an impact on our capital campaign.

mike meserve• What does “The Year That Makes The Difference” mean to you?To me, it means we provide an opportunity for a young man to improve and develop - academically, athletically, socially and beyond. BA crosses over into all kinds of experiences and stays with you, forever.

• Tell us about the Wolverine Program. The Wolverine Program, which launched in 2013, is designed to give non-athlete students and out-of-season athletes a team to be part of. Additionally, the program has been set up to help students develop and grow utilizing outdoor, community, athletic, and social experiences.

• How does this open up new opportunities for BA students? As teenage males, our young men view the world through a very specific filter. Our goal with this program is to remove that filter and open their eyes to what is around them - specifically what Maine has to offer.

• So what’s the story about the Meserve Burger? It’s something I’ve put together for a few years now. Picture a burger stuffed with cheese, with two grilled cheese sandwiches for buns. We throw on a fried egg, add some bacon, and you’re good to go. It’s mostly for fun, so there is limited data collected, but the burger seems to have about a 50% failure rate - it’s just too big for them to finish!

“…the best part of the trip came just before we went to bed, when Mr. Goepel started telling his ghost stories…”

a dedicated program created for those students who choose not to play a sport during their year at Bridgton.

The first year of the Wo l v e r i n e P r o g r a m was met with great

success. In fact, Mr. Meserve’s program was over capacity. Students also embraced Mr. Stauble’s new outdoor learning experiences, which included skeet shooting, moose tracking, and ice fishing. Mr. Stauble and Mr. Meserve realized during this first year that, while their goals were many, certain areas of the program needed to be addressed before further expansions were possible. Perhaps most challenging was the realization that the Outing Club Cabin, left for many years with limited maintenance, was in need of significant enhancements and repairs.

The Academy was thrilled when an anonymous donor challenged the school with a $25,000 fundraising opportunity. If the Academy was able to raise $25,000 dedicated to the Outing Club and Wolverine Program, this donor would match the entire gift. A second donor soon stepped forward who was equally passionate about outdoor learning, quickly fulfilling the entire match gift.

In 2014 and 2015, $50,000 in funding will be supplied to the Wolverine Program and Outing Club. The Academy’s first priority will be to use a portion of these generous gifts to fully restore the Outing Club Cabin. And, while it will still be the rustic getaway that many remember, the Cabin will be returned to its early glory. Plans for the remaining balance of funds are still underway, but one thing is certain: the storied tradition of the Outing Club at Bridgton Academy is poised for a return to greatness. We look forward to

sharing many wonderful stories to come as our students get out to explore and learn, truly benefiting from the natural assets of this beautiful State of Maine.

GETA venerable BA tradition gets a kick-start as our students explore the wilderness in their backyard

Originally established in the 1960’s, the Bridgton Academy Outing Club has been a celebrated tradition for decades. Led by faculty passionate about the natural world around us, the Outing Club was the place where BA legends were born. In its earliest days, the Club was spearheaded by faculty member Mr. Warren Youker. Mr. Youker’s trips were always popular and, in his prime, “Youk” would take dozens of BA students at a time out into the Maine wilderness.

Bridgton’s Outing Club Cabin, located just a few miles from campus on Stearns Pond, was initially constructed by the Class of 1977. A trip to the Cabin reflects decades of Bridgton history and Outing Club traditions. These include carving your name on the walls of the Cabin, sitting by the fire, snowshoeing, ghost stories with Mr.

Goepel '66, and even the notorious Polar Bear Club. For hundreds of students, now alumni, the Outing Club was a rite of passage.

As the years passed, the initial popularity of the Outing Club began to fade. Students were busier with their own pursuits, and few had the time or interest to

take a voluntary trip to explore the outdoors. Technology became a part of the daily reality for students, and the idea of travelling to a remote location without electricity, water, or a real bathroom (not to mention no wi-fi) grew less and less appealing.

In 2012, a new champion of the outdoors came to Bridgton. Mr. Ray Stauble was passionate about re-branding the Outing Club, revitalizing the vibrancy of a program that was once a defining element of the Bridgton experience. Veteran faculty member Mr. Mike Meserve was also busy thinking about the same ideas. Both teachers were grappling with the reality that Bridgton students were simply not getting the exposure to the Maine outdoors they d e s e r v e d , and were missing out on the amazing learning opportunities waiting just outside of their dormitories.

Together, Ray and Mike pledged to address the rebirth of the Outing Club, making a commitment to ensure that students “get out” and learn about the world around them. For Ray, this commitment began with an assessment of the Outing Club Cabin, as well as the creation of new Outing Club experiences. Mike began by launching the Wolverine Program in 2013;

Binaca macdonaldBA’s New Dean of Academics

• Who is Binaca Macdonald?I’m a wife, a mother, and a teacher. What drew me to Bridgton Academy was that it was so unlike any other place that I had ever worked before. I lived in Bridgton for a number of years before I joined the Bridgton Academy community, and was always intrigued by what was happening “on the hill.” I knew that BA was something I wanted to be a part of, so when the opportunity presented itself, I jumped in!

• How does Bridgton Academy’s mission apply to academics?I think that the Academy’s overall mission speaks to the fact that we are here to prepare each student for his next step – whatever it is. That next step is college for many of our young men – so we are preparing them not only academically, but athletically, socially, and emotionally as well. We are also prepping our students for what life’s going to hold beyond Bridgton Academy; so we are really looking at the whole experience.

Whether our students are at an Ivy League school or a two-year program next year, we know that they need to be able to write, identify an argument as well as create their own, and be able to work with data. Our academic team has identified those skills that we know our students will need to be successful at the next level.

• How would you describe the faculty here at BA?The faculty here are among the most talented, dedicated, and inspiring educators that I have worked with. They are tireless in their efforts to support our students. To work here, live here, teach here, coach here, is really handing over your life for a number of months. You are, in essence, going 'all-in’. Our staff goes the extra mile, but, for us,

it’s not the extra mile, it’s just what we do.

• What does the iPad 1 to 1 initiative bring to the Academic program? Two years ago, the Academy moved to a 1 to 1 iPad program where every student was provided

with a tablet for digital learning. This program is pretty incredible, as our young men literally have the world at their fingertips. For example, my class today is reading an essay by James Baldwin. They access this essay for free on the internet, annotate their text on their iPads, and then utilize these notes to create an iMovie homework assignment. The amount of access to academic tools and information that students have when they hold their ipad’s is almost hard to grasp.• How is BA a part of your own definition?BA is a huge part of my heart now because of the relationships that I have made here. I can’t imagine a day when I’m not here, and that’s a pretty powerful statement. Every time we graduate a class it’s a total collision of emotions. I’m so proud and so glad that our students are ready for their next steps, but it’s bittersweet because you do get so attached to these young men. We are challenged to share our lives with our students for thirty-two weeks and then send them off into the world. It’s hard not to feel like a part of us goes with them every time they leave.

The achievements of Lieutenant Commander Mitch McGuffie are woven into the fabric of BA Alumni success stories. We could not be more proud of Mitch for his service to our country and for his continued belief in Bridgton Academy. Thank you, Lieutenant Commander McGuffie!

MITCH McGUFFIE '99

A 2003 graduate of the US Naval Academy, Mitch served as a Main Propulsion Assistant during his first sea tour on the USS Benfold in San Diego. From there, he went on to serve two years on HMS Cornwall (Plymouth, UK) as a Naval Exchange Officer, the only American Naval Officer in the British Fleet during that period of time. In 2008, Mitch served as a Naval Liaison Officer for the United States Senate (Washington, D.C.) and, after two years, Lieutenant Commander McGuffie served as the Operations Officer for USS Laboon out of Norfolk, Virginia. Lieutenant Commander Mitch McGuffie has also been published in the United States Naval Institute magazine, Proceedings. He and his wife, Kelly, are married and have two young daughters together.

In his global travels, Lieutenant Commander McGuffie’s encounters have been innumerable and his exposure to situations – both foreign and domestic - is awe-inspiring. His intellect, strength, conviction, confidence and courage, and the proper use of these powerful tools, have helped Lieutenant Commander McGuffie achieve the success he enjoys today. We were privileged enough to recently catch up with Mitch, who shared a bit with us about his BA experience and his successes thus far:

In what ways did BA prepare you for your current station in life?“Whether it was getting tackled on the football field, skiing down Shawnee Peak in sub-zero temperatures, hiking up that monstrous hill to get to the dining hall in the middle of winter, sitting through endless hours of study hall, or just walking to the post office to get my mail; every single experience I had at BA better prepared me in some way to face and overcome future challenges in life. I must admit that my year at BA has had more of an impact on where I am today in life than my four years at the US Naval Academy. The lessons learned from my days at BA still come in handy fifteen years later as the Commanding Officer of a U.S. Naval Warship.”

What’s the hardest part about your position as a Commanding Officer?“Patience. As a leader you establish the vision or goals for your organization or team and you chart the course on how to get there. Sometimes it takes longer to achieve the goals you have established than you may have originally imagined. As the saying goes 'Rome was not built in a day’ and all leaders must keep that in mind.”

What message would you share with the Class of 2015?“The same message that was shared with me by my BA English Teacher, Jake Laferriere, when I graduated in 1999: the simple words of 'Carpe Diem’. The World is full of amazing opportunities, it is up to you to seize the day and turn these opportunities into reality.”

1930’s

Madelyn Buck ’37After two centuries of the Buck Family’s involvement in Bridgton Academy – from its inception in 1806, to its incorporation in 1808, to present day - the BA community was honored and privileged to induct Ms. Madelyn Buck ’37, on behalf of her entire family, into the Bridgton Academy Hall of Fame. Ms. Buck was inducted in the Contributor Category for her many years of dedicated and loyal service to the Academy, as well as for what she has given back to her home state and town as an educator and volunteer. Here, Madelyn accepts the Hall of Fame honor in Goldsmith Dining Hall on 09/28/2014 (right). To Madelyn’s left stands BA Headmaster Grady Vigneau, P ’12.

Rachel (Rice) Deans ’39 We were very excited to welcome Rachel back on campus this September to celebrate her 75th reunion! Since her graduation from BA, Rachel has gone on to lead a remarkable life and was recently featured in the South Portland-Cape Elizabeth Sentry. The story chronicles Rachel’s life; beginning with her early days as a youth growing up in nearby Waterford, her education at Bridgton Academy, her days as a nursing student, how she met the love of her life - and everything in-between - up to present day. Rachel has always shown her pride for “The Black and the Grey” and has served faithfully as a Class Representative for the past several years. We could not be more proud of our friend and BA ’39 alumna, Rachel Rice Deans!

1940’s

Luigi F. Barassi '43At a youthful 90 years old, Luigi is pleased to report that he is happy, doing well and in good health. After serving in the Army, Luigi could be found for several years in his role as Deputy Fire Chief of the Leominster Fire Dept. An earlier career playing semi-pro football for the Leominster Lions earned Luigi induction into the Leominster Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Luigi and his wife, Nancy, who sadly passed away November 10, 2010, are the proud parents of five children: Louis, a private school teacher; James, a doctor; William, a State Trooper in N.H.; Ann, a travel agent, and Susan, a teacher and nutritionist in Virginia.

THE 2014 ALUMNI PICNIC - CRYSTAL LAKE PARK, HARRISON, MEA splendid time was had by all on September 2, 2014 at the annual “Alumni Picnic” on Crystal Lake in nearby Harrison, Maine. It was a perfect late-summer day as alumni enjoyed a light lunch, unforgettable jokes from Phil Denison '48 and a special cake for the occasion, made by BA’s very own Jolene Roderick, an employee in the Academy’s business office. The alumni picnic would not have been complete without recent Hall of Fame inductee, Madelyn Buck ’37, leading all those present in a rousing rendition of BA’s school song: “The Black and the Grey Forever”. A big thank you to all who attended - we already can’t wait to see you all (and hopefully even more alumni!) at next year’s picnic! Along with the many activities she participates in in her community, Carol also continues to support BA by serving as a Class Representative. This year, Carol’s efforts in reaching out to her fellow ’54 classmates, in honor of their 60th reunion from Bridgton Academy, garnered the strongest support of all reunion classes for this year. Thank you, Carol, for continuing to inspire us all!

It was shortly after Tad and his teammates took to the field again, in early June 2014, that he and his fellow Sharks were presented with their championship rings from the previous season, when they won their first-ever “Futures Collegiate Baseball League” title. It was an exciting evening for the Sharks, but particularly for Tad, as the night was dubbed “Tad Gold Night”, to honor the Martha’s Vineyard native for his three, loyal years playing with the Sharks. As fans celebrated Tad, receiving rally towels emblazoned with his jersey number, Tad’s world was about to change forever. Samuel L. Pitts ’44 (May 27, 2013) Samuel “Bud” Lee Pitts, Jr., also known as “Mr. Oak”, 86, passed away at his home in Harrison, Maine on Memorial Day, 2013, with his daughter by his side.

A life-long resident of Harrison, Sam was born July 23, 1926 in N. Bridgton, Maine, the son of Samuel Lee & Fannie Fae Witter Pitts. He attended grade school in Harrison and was a 1944 graduate of Bridgton Academy. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. in 1945 and served our country for two years, mostly in Agana Guam. On April 30, 1948, Sam married Emma Hobbs, with whom he had three daughters.

Sam wore many hats in his lifetime. He ran his father’s portable saw mill and was manager for Ben Cohen’s lumber mill in Norway; after which he became manager and timber buyer for Wilner’s Wood Heel Products. Sam also trained race horses at Yonkers Raceway in NY, and took his family to winter training in Florida for three years. He was co-owner of Vacationland Campsites on Crystal Lake in Harrison with his brother, Russell, and sister, Virginia. He ran this campsite from 1960, until it was sold in 1971. In the winter of 1969, Sam groomed trails on the campsite property, as well as up Hawk Mountain. At this time, he also opened Vacationland

19

Ski-Mobile Area. In the early 70’s, Sam began making and selling pine furniture. He opened a shop to sell these fine works in the Harrison. Sam also held Saturday night dances in his furniture store during winter, which created great, lasting, memories for many.

In April, 1978, Sam married Irma Maxfield Hibbard in their Victorian home on Main Street in Harrison. Sam converted the attached barn into a workshop and show room and began refinishing and selling oak furniture. It was at this point, that he named his business “Mr. Oak’s”. Sam thus became known as “Mr. Oak” and ran this business until 2005, when he retired at age 79. Sam became a well-known furniture dealer in New England, and his works were shipped all over the country.

Sam took great pride in the Harrison of his youth and in the Harrison of today. He had an amazing memory for names, dates and events. When he retired he wrote stories of his youth, capturing what it was like for his generation to grow up in Harrison. He video-taped all the houses in Harrison village, narrating who owned each house in the 50’s and 60’s and telling a story or two along the way. A die-hard Red Sox fan, Sam was known to keep daily postings on his front porch, announcing who is beloved Sox would be playing that day. He enjoyed attending many games at Fenway with his daughter, Judy.

Sam was at his happiest, though, when his family would visit for Harrison’s Old Home Days, Christmas, or just to play and swim at Crystal Lake Park. Fireworks on his back porch were a yearly family tradition. Together, he and his daughter, Donna, wrote the history of the Pitts family of Harrison.

For two generations of families, a visit to Mr. Oak’s to see his Christmas decorations were a tradition. Sam’s last wish was to see the gazebo in Crystal Lake Park finished. In 2005 he had given a generous donation in hopes of seeing it built in order to bring summer concerts to the park. Unfortunately monies ran out and the gazebo was never completed. When the community was made aware, donations came in and his grandson, Justin McIver completed construction on the gazebo. We had our first concert in Honor of Sam on May 5th thanks to local musicians who made it happen. He was there to see and hear it all.

Sam leaves behind many members of his loving family. Sam was a tremendous presence in his community, and within his family, and is greatly missed. We know, however, that his spirit lives on in the legacy he has left behind.

Marjorie Manter Rogers ’45 (January 3, 2013) Marjorie Manter Rogers passed away on January 3, 2013 in the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital at the age of 84.

Meadowbrook Farm, in Martha’s Vineyard, had been Mrs. Rogers’s home since 1970, when she married Harold D. Rogers, who had grown up here in the early years of the last century. Marjorie’s family, the Manters, also had a tradition, spanning fourteen generations, on Martha’s Vineyard. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, who passed away in 2000. Marjorie was well-known in her community for her passion of riding horses, raising horses, and teaching and inspiring countless people to share in this passion as well.

Marjorie had been riding since she was a girl, when her mother gave her a Shetland pony. Her skill and passion came to full fruition in 1954, when she opened Pond View Farm in West Tisbury on Tisbury Great Pond. It was a business, offering riding lessons and trail rides to adults and children, but its larger significance was informal. Quickly, Pond View Farm became a sort of open house for West Tisbury teenagers. Under Marjorie Manter’s watchful supervision, the kids, most of them girls, did farm work in exchange for riding lessons and trail rides. They cleaned stalls, fed and watered the horses, prepared them for the paying customers. And then they rode, sometimes with Marjorie, often on their own. Many folks in her community still recall their time riding with Marjorie as “the fondest years in their adolescence”.

Marjorie Davis Manter was born in August 1928, the second of three children. She grew up in the out-of-doors; roaming woods and fields, fishing, hunting, riding.

In 1943, her junior year of high school, Marjorie enrolled at Bridgton Academy. Here, she played field hockey, basketball and softball. She also skied and practiced archery. In the 1945 edition of The Stranger, her yearbook quote read: “Boots, saddle, to horse and away.” She cherished her years at Bridgton and supported “The Black and The Grey” for a number of years.

Marjorie enjoyed reading mystery novels and playing Scrabble and cribbage. She was sociable and liked to both visit, and receive, guests. Marjorie also loved cats. Marjorie leaves behind innumerable friends and family both in her Martha’s Vineyard community and beyond.

Born in Portland, Dana attended Deering High School before graduating from Bridgton Academy in 1947 where he was a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams, as well as a member of the Camera Club.

Dana proudly served his country in the Navy on the USS Fall River during World War II. Upon returning, he attended both The University of Maine at Brunswick and Boston University.

A man with extraordinary talents and a deep compassion for others, Dana lived his life fully engaged and always appreciated each day as a gift.

Dana eventually made his career in freight transportation, with companies including Hannaford Bros., Roadway and St. Johnsbury. A notable multitasker, he always found time for Sunday drives with his family, fishing expeditions and cheering on his children at sporting events.

In most recent years, he enjoyed ushering at Merrill Auditorium, providing security at the Portland Expo or helping folks find their seats at a Sea Dogs game; he relished in meeting new people. A great joy to Dana was volunteering through the Foster Grandparent Program.

With a love for books, a thirst for knowledge and an appetite for good food, Dana also welcomed philosophical and lively political discussions. A member of the Unitarian Church, he frequented spiritual and educational retreats at Star Island for many years. Dana was also an avid outdoorsman and had a fine appreciation and respect for the natural world around him. His flower and vegetable gardens provided a variety of colors for many to enjoy. Dana loved all of Maine: the ocean, the blueberry fields, the forests and the mountains.

Edward L. Kershaw ’48, Trustee (2001-2007) (June 14, 2013) Edward “Ted” Lawrence Kershaw, 83 passed away on Friday, June 14, 2013 in Idaho, where he was a resident of Nampa.

Ted had a long history with Bridgton Academy. Born and raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Ted enrolled for the one-year, post-graduate program at BA and graduated from our historic school in 1948. A competitive athlete, Ted played on the basketball and baseball teams, but it was his performance on the cross country team for which he is remembered: he not only won all but one meet in which he ran, but also broke the Fryeburg Academy course record by two minutes. In addition to his athleticism, Ted was highly regarded by his classmates for his quiet kindness, sense of humor and warm personality.

Following his graduation from Bridgton Academy, Ted earned both his Bachelor’s Degree, and then Master’s Degree in 21

education from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. He then embarked on a career in management which included working many years for the Easter Seal Society, a non-profit, nationwide, community-based health agency dedicated to helping children and adults with disabilities attain greater independence. Having served as President of both the North Carolina Easter Seal Society and the New York Easter Seal Society, Ted received the National Easter Seal Societies’ Medders Award in both 1982 and 1992.

Through the years, Ted maintained his connection to the Bridgton Academy community; as he wrote in a letter to Headmaster Bob Walker in 1990, “The year I spent at Bridgton Academy was without a doubt the most important one in my academic career.” That year was made possible for Ted by his mother, and he chose to commemorate both her and the Academy in a significant way by establishing the Flora H. Kershaw Scholarship in 1997. He explained, “My mother sent me here when she didn’t have two nickels to rub together, and BA had a great impact on my life.” This scholarship is awarded every year to a deserving student in need of financial assistance in order to attend the Academy. By honoring his mother in this way, Ted and his family have provided many young men with the opportunity to pursue a year of study at BA in preparation for the transition to college.

In 1998, Ted was honored by Bridgton Academy with the Alumni Service Award. He was elected to the Bridgton Academy Board of Trustees in 2001, which he served with integrity and dedication for many years, and provided his expertise in management, as well as his personal experience as an alumnus. In 2004, Ted made another significant contribution to Bridgton Academy through the Third Century Fund Campaign, once again in honor of a woman who was highly influential in his life: he chose to name a space in the new Humanities Center on campus for his beloved mother. The Flora H. Kershaw Academic Deans Office is located in the Student Services suite on the first floor of this building and provides a permanent and prominent location for our Academic Dean, Mrs. Binaca Macdonald, to meet with students. In recognition of his various achievements and numerous contributions to our Academy, Ted was inducted into the Bridgton Academy Hall of Fame in 2009.

Ted’s absence in the BA community, his community in Nampa, Idaho, and the many places across the country in which he made a difference, is felt on a daily basis by all those whose lives he touched. Ted’s compassion and generosity has left a lasting legacy for all those who were lucky enough to have known this fine man. Rest in peace, Mr. Kershaw.
