MEMO To: Edward Schaefer, Associate Dean From: James Oliverio, Director, UF Digital Worlds Institute RE: Detailed Response to Information Requested for BA in DAS Degree Revitalization
In response to specific feedback from the UCC Committee, we offer herein supporting documentation to support the significant differentiation of the BA in Digital Arts and Sciences (DAS) from the BS in DAS. These two degrees have, from their origins, consisted of substantially different courses and raisons d'être.
The attached .pdf document provides the following information:
1) Copy of 2002 Letter from Provost Colburn announcing the approval of the BA and BS in DAS
2) Copy of the 2003-04 UF Catalog showing the substantial differences in the curricula for each of the courses from their earliest iterations
3) Copy of the current curriculum for the BS in DAS, taken from the 2012 website
4) Copy of the original 2003-04 BA in DAS curriculum, re-formatted to allow side by side comparison of obvious differences when Both Item 3) and 4) are printed out and laid side by side
5) Copies of the revitalized 2011 version of the BA in DAS (with all three tracks formatted to also allow side by side comparison when printed out and laid side by side) and the ALC/SLO curriculum map that has been reviewed and approved by Dr. Timothy Brophy as being “fine, based on the current format in UF undergraduate catalog.”
Also, responses are given below to several specific concerns about the 2011 version of the BA in DAS.
CONCERN 1: Rationale as to why it should be under CISE’s degree program in Digital Arts and Sciences – this needs alignment with CISE’s ALC.
RESPONSE 1: A side-by-side comparison of the current BS and updated BA will reveal significant overlap and numerous analogous courses comprising some ¾ of the Lower Level curricula. At the Upper Level the students work together in four sequential digital studio courses, with emphasis on coding and programming in the BS and on design, storytelling and artistic matters in the BA. Additionally, we have been and are working with the CISE administration and faculty to ensure that the BA in DAS and the BS in DAS continue to build appropriate overlap in faculty, instructional resources, alignment of the ALC’s and new course proposals.

CONCERN 2: Eight semester plan - submit catalog copy
RESPONSE 2: Please see Item 5) above
CONCERN 3: For the presentation put the old curriculum side-by-side with the new….so they can be evaluated more easily.
RESPONSE 3: Please see Item 5) above
CONCERN 4: Concentration in Systems Design has 10 credits of PB without any explanation as to why; there are 9 credits in the other degree concentrations.
RESPONSE 4: Systems Design has been amended so that it now has 9 credits of the GE PB requirement, not 10.
CONCERN 5: Concentration in Systems Design has 39 Gen Ed credits, 3 more than the requirement. Because of the various requirements for the degree we couldn’t see quickly how to pull a course out and put it into the lower division section, but if we can that would be desirable.
RESPONSE 5: Systems Design has been amended so that it now has 36 credits of the GE requirement, not 39.
CONCERN 6: The proposal will need to have all catalog copy, including tracking courses, required GPA to enter the upper level; ALC (addressed above) and an 8 semester plan.
RESPONSE 6: Please see Item 5) above
CONCERN 7: Concentration in Systems Design has ART 2701C/ART 2305C under upper division. Can these be put into the lower division courses without upsetting something? RESPONSE 7: The degree is designed to facilitate the transfer of students from partner state two-year institutions into the degree program in their third year. Because these courses are not offered at partner institutions in the State of Florida, transfer students would take these courses in their third year. UF students in the degree program could of course still take these courses in their first or second year and still have them count toward their degree program.

BS in Digital Arts & Sciences – CURRENT ENGINEERING DEGREE
1
Digital Arts and Sciences The digital arts and sciences (DAS) program crosses college boundaries between engineering and fine arts. This degree is an interdisciplinary engineering program.
About This Major
• College: Engineering • Degree: Bachelor of Science in Digital Arts and Sciences • Hours for Degree: 121 • Minor: No • Combined-Degree Program: Yes • Website: www.cise.ufl.edu/student_services/undergrad/das
Overview
Students take art and other interdisciplinary courses along with the core computer classes. Graduates will be well versed in issues and solutions for basic art techniques and graphic art design, as well as modeling 3D virtual worlds. The DAS graduate also will be well versed in collaborative multidisciplinary team models. Intermediate and final class projects are centered around a balanced-team composition focusing on multimedia productions.
Department Requirements
Students must complete all critical-tracking courses with a C or better in each course and the critical-tracking GPA must be at 2.5 or higher. A grade of C or better is required in ENC 3254, CIS 3020 or 3023, and EEL 3701C. In addition, CISE requires all DAS students to maintain a cumulative, upper-division and department GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Students who do not meet these requirements will be placed on academic probation and required to prepare a probation contract with a CISE adviser. Students normally are given two terms in which to remove their deficit points; however, students who do not satisfy the conditions of the first term of probation may be dismissed from the department.
Critical Tracking To graduate with this major, students must complete all university, college and major requirements.
Equivalent critical tracking courses as determined by the State of Florida Common Course Prerequisites may be used for transfer students.

• Critical Tracking • 8 Semester Plan
It is important that any students interested in the concentration in digital arts and science confer with the adviser in the School of Art and Art History regarding this program. The rapid pace of technological development may necessitate periodic updates to the specific course titles and numbers published. Consequently, the curriculum outlined in this catalog should be regarded as an outline. Currently updated curriculum sheets from the adviser and SASS audits are the most reliable form for this major.
