Course in Depth

What will I study?

In Year 1 you will develop the foundation practical,academic and critical thinking skills that will be enhancedduring your degree. The history and development ofmusical theatre is explored to build your understandingof the genre, alongside critical analysis and culturalcontext. In practical sessions, you will engage with thework of a variety of practitioners across the spectrum ofdance, acting and singing technique to augment yourperformance work.

In Year 2 critical enquiry into musical theatre builds onthe critical and analytical skills developed in Year 1. Youwill gain knowledge of key practitioners and movementsand embody this understanding in your practical work.Compulsory modules in the study of acting through song,creation of musical theatre performance and musicaltheatre practitioners are complemented with optionalopportunities to explore areas such as acting, writing anddance, as well as specialist musical theatre options.

In Year 3 you will advance your knowledge andunderstanding of contemporary musical theatre practiceand undertake increasingly independent work,developing particular practical and theoreticalspecialisms. Compulsory modules examine currenttheoretical work in the field of musical theatre and theembodiment of practical skills and ideas in a musicaltheatre ensemble production. You will also undertake anindependent musical theatre dissertation project. Yourcompulsory modules are complemented with advancedelective opportunities in areas such as acting, directingand dance, as well as specialist musical theatre options.

How will I study?

Through formal lectures and seminars, practicalworkshops, production projects, independent ensemblework and personal research, you will acquire critical andcreative skills which will be of use in your future career.Alongside your study programme, you will maintainperson reflective journals and prepare practice CVs foremployment. Some modules include placementsalongside taught sessions.

Through compulsory full-scale productions you will havethe opportunity to develop your practical skills in livetheatre in front of audiences in fully-equippedprofessional theatre spaces.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through a balanced mixture of practicaland written work including essays, reflective journals,workshop performances, full productions and oralpresentations and you can expect to be tested on bothyour practical and theoretical knowledge andunderstanding. You will be encouraged to reflect criticallyon your learning in each assessment and use journals toreflect regularly on your personal development.

There are no formal written examinations as part of thecurrent assessment methods on this programme.

The department's outstanding resources ensure you gainpractical experience to a professional standard.Contemporary performance environments include dancestudios, black box drama studios, rehearsal rooms, atheatre construction workshop, costume constructionworkshop, scene dock, theatre design studios, digital

sound studio, digital design suite, music technology room,music practice studios, a recital room and an outdooramphitheatre. The Studio Theatre also functions as afully-equipped aerial performance space.

Level 4 (Year 1 of Full-Time Programme)

MTH1101: Introducing Musical Theatre (20 credits)Introducing Musical Theatre explores the emergence and development of musical theatre as a distinctive genre withinthe performing arts. Through a study of key works and practitioners that have shaped the genre, you will develop abroad, historically informed understanding of musical theatre as a distinctive form of theatrical performance. You willincrease the breadth and depth of your understanding of what constitutes musical Theatre. By studying the variedroles that music has had throughout the history of theatrical performance, you will also gain knowledge of theprecursory developments in theatrical performance that led to the emergence of musical theatre as a distinctive genrein the 19th century.

MTH1102: Studying Musical Theatre (20 credits)Studying Musical Theatre introduces you to methods of close observation which facilitate your skills in identifying,describing and interpreting musical theatre. Alongside focused studio practice, you will watch and write about live andrecorded musical theatre performances using a range of practical, observational and textual frameworks to supportanalytical description. You may also investigate wider processes of musical theatre documentation, such as writingreviews, journals and critical reflection.

MTH1103: Vocal Technique for Musical Theatre (20 credits)Vocal Technique for Musical Theatre explores vocal technique to help you develop healthy and sustainable practice.The module will also link vocal technique with other necessary skills, such as aural and music theory. It will be deliveredusing a mixture of lectures, small group teaching and one-to-one lessons to give you an opportunity to explore vocaltechnique for musical theatre deeply and develop your vocal capabilities.

MTH1104: Acting Technique for Musical Theatre (20 credits)Acting Technique for Musical Theatre provides an opportunity to explore a variety of approaches, techniques andtheories tailored to the specific demands of acting for musical theatre. You will develop your skills and understandingin acting elements (presence, character, language, space, body, text, narrative, genre, period, and locational context)which will be contextualised in a range of performance genres, including musical theatre. A range of theorists andtheoretically-informed practitioners will be explored in relation to the development of acting technique with the aim ofenhancing your ability to reflect critically on your own performance practice.

MTH1105: Words and Music (20 credits)Words and Music focuses upon a fundamental aspect of the genre of musical theatre that will equip you with anunderstanding of issues that impact upon the creation and performance of musical theatre works. You will criticallyexamine approaches to the combination of text and music. Initially taking examples from across a range of genres,classical and popular, the module will progress to focus upon music in theatre, from opera to musical theatre. This willbe undertaken as a series of case studies, with the intention to develop your critical awareness and understanding of arange of techniques and practices. These will include solo song/aria, duos and ensembles and larger structures (e.g. thefinale). The study will further examine the role and function of the librettist, and the relationship between composerand librettist (if they are not the same person). You will also be presented with opportunities to develop your owncreative practice in the combination of words and music.

MTH1106: Musical Theatre Dance Technique (20 credits)Musical Theatre Dance Technique introduces you to the cultural and performance aspects of dance within the musicaltheatre genre studying the historic context of the form within focused studio practice. The module outlines the originsof the development of concert dance and its development to current musical theatre choreographic trends. Practicaland theoretical approaches are used to identify and discuss the work of key artists in relation to historic practices,concepts and contexts, identifying and introducing vaudeville, musical comedy and jazz dance techniques.

Language modules, delivered at the Edge Hill Language Centre, are available to study as an integral part of this degree.A single Language module can be studied instead of MTH1106 Musical Theatre Dance Technique.

Level 5 (Year 2 of Full-Time Programme)

MTH2101: Approaches to Musical Theatre (20 credits)Approaches to Musical Theatre develops your critical skills by relating distinct theoretical concepts and movementsto musical theatre examples. The module seeks to break down the simple notion that theory is something to be'applied' to practice, seeing it rather in historical context as continually interconnected and often inseparable frompractice. In requiring you to think more critically about musical theatre and the intersections of theory and practice,the module entails a reflection on how art movements have articulated social concerns and discourses, dwelling onquestions of efficacy, responsibility and ethics.

MTH2102: Musical Theatre Practitioners (20 credits)Musical Theatre Practitioners consists of a series of case studies of significant musical theatre practitioners. Lectureswill focus on analyses of key works by significant practitioners, examining 'internal' aspects of the work, such asarrangement and composition techniques, choreography and design, as well as 'external' or contextual aspectscontributing to the meaning, understanding and historical significance of individual works. Key works will be analysedand placed within the context of a practitioner's oeuvre but also within the social, cultural and historical context withinwhich this oeuvre emerged.

MTH2103: Acting Through Song (20 credits)Acting Through Song supports you in developing specialist vocal skills in a chosen area of musical theatreperformance. The development of specialist skills is underpinned by analysis of both scores and significant performers.Adding depth to a broad knowledge of the trajectory from text to stage, and passing through preparation of scores andtexts, interpretation, analysis, rehearsal and performance, this module presents an opportunity for you to develop adistinctive voice, as well as a specialism within the broad field of musical theatre performance. You will also develop arange of exercises to further develop, strengthen and preserve the voice.

MTH2104: Creating Musical Theatre Performance (20 credits)Creating Musical Theatre Performance focuses on the practical exploration and critical interrogation of the creationof a piece of musical theatre. You will apply and strengthen your knowledge of musical theatre and performance tocreate an original piece of work. The practical work is informed both by the research into, and study of, variousstrategies and methodologies employed by practitioners creating original work from a variety of sources. This modulewill enable you to take individual and collective responsibility in the researching and rehearsing of an improvised anddevised presentation. The aim is to foster the requisite skills for future professional employment opportunities usingoriginal material.

DAN2107: Dance Theatre Performance (20 credits)Dance Theatre Performance focuses on the practical exploration and critical interrogation of contemporary dancetheatre. The module explores choreographic and creative strategies while also enabling the acquisition anddevelopment of embodied knowledge and skills through the context of a tutor-led production. Relevant historical,theoretical and socio-cultural perspectives will be considered and you will be required to critically engage with thesethemes in relation to your own creative and practical experiences.

DES2107: Introduction to Prosthetic Make Up (20 credits)Introduction to Prosthetic Make Up familiarises you with the diversity of prosthetic SFX makeup used within theatre,film and television. You will focus on how the human anatomy relates to sculpture and be introduced to a range ofprocesses beginning with initial flat plate-sculpting and mould-making of scars, tears and wounds. This will be followedby the process of silicone moulding, application, colouring and finishing. The prosthetics colouring and blending willinclude wounds, realistic dead and alive skin tones, bruising and skin disease. The aim is to create the most realisticeffects to enhance and mask the performer, engage with a number of artworks and conduct laboratory experiments,developing a technical vocabulary and exploring critical understanding of prosthetics and the body.

DRA2105: Imagining Better Worlds: Theatre, Learning and Development (20 credits)Imagining Better Worlds: Theatre, Learning and Development examines the histories of performance interventionsin local and global contexts and explores critically, using historical and contemporary case studies, the consequencesand meanings of those interventions. There will also be opportunities for observation and practical experience ofgroup creative projects. The module provides an essential introduction to creating performances and facilitatingworkshops in response to the identified needs of a specific community, a particular community grouping. You willexperience and interrogate theatre practice in diverse cultural, social and political contexts as you focus on theatremaking that takes place in a range of settings.

DRA2107: The Art and Craft of the Playwright (20 credits)The Art and Craft of the Playwright is a practical and theoretical interrogation of the historical and culturalsignificance of the playwright, in addition to the idea of the play-text. The module provides you with a developed levelof practical knowledge and theoretical understanding of the idea of the play. You will learn about the art of theplaywright, subject that art to close analysis, and put your learning into practice. Investigating the historical andcontemporary role of the writer in the context of live performance, the module will enhance your appreciation of whatthe scripted play does and how its elements function in the theatre, informing your own critical interpretations andsupporting your individual creative attempts to grapple with the making of a play-text.

MTH2105: Popular Musicals (20 credits)Popular Musicals explores the idea and form of the popular musical. Referring to an art form being "of the people",attaining commercial success or being presented according to a "pop" aesthetic, the idea of the popular will bediscussed and explored through analysis of selected musical theatre works. From politically charged works alignedwith folk and Marxist notions of "the people" to the popular megamusical, differing concepts and diverse realisationsof the popular will be explored through forms of musical theatre. You will develop a perspective on the idea of thepopular in alignment with exemplary musical theatre works.

MTH2106: Musical Theatre Dance Technique 2 (20 credits)Musical Theatre Dance Technique 2 is a practice-based module that introduces you to dance making and movementenquiry. You will investigate musical theatre choreographic concepts, working directly with a score and lyrics anddeveloping knowledge of compositional devices. The aim is to explore a variety of movement styles throughexperiential analysis of jazz/musical theatre dance practice.

Level 6 (Year 3 of Full-Time Programme)

MTH3101: Researching Musical Theatre (20 credits)Researching Musical Theatre cultivates an awareness of theoretical, methodological and artistic debates. The moduleis structured around key methodological questions and concerns that need to be considered when formulating aresearch project. These include exploring what constitutes research, how to design a research project, how tostructure and write a research paper, the nature of practice-as-research, the nature of practice-based research, andthe significance of different disciplines. The module will also focus on important musical theatre practitioners and theirsignificant contributions to the genre.

MTH3102: Musical Theatre Dance Performance (20 credits)Musical Theatre Dance Performance offers you the opportunity to develop your movement skills and techniques. Themodule also expands your potential as an emerging musical theatre professional. A combination of sessions relevant tocurrent dance practices from the jazz dance tradition are complemented by other relevant musical theatre danceforms. These experiences will be underscored and widened through related approaches to singing and acting.

MTH3103: Musical Theatre Ensemble Production (20 credits)Musical Theatre Ensemble Production is concerned with producing creative work that investigates and interrogatesapproaches to musical theatre and performance-making in the contemporary era. You will examine the work of keyperformance practitioners, creating ensemble productions that respond to the aesthetic directions being taken incontemporary performance practice, or which are inspired by a contemporary production ethos.

PAR3104: Dissertation (20 credits)Dissertation provides the opportunity for you to undertake an independent investigation of an identified area ofinterest within relevant fields of current practice. You will identify areas of inquiry according to your own interests andstrengths, and negotiate the parameters for independent study with your appointed supervisor. You will apply yourresearch to the creation of a dissertation, which may take the form of a performance, creative, applied or writtenproject.

DAN3104: Jazz Dance (20 credits)Jazz Dance introduces you to the cultural and performance aspects of jazz dance, studying the historical context of theform alongside focused studio practice. The module interrogates jazz dance from a traditional perspective, looking atits origins in New Orleans, to its development as concert dance in New York, and its impact on American theatredance. Practical and theoretical approaches are used to identify and discuss the work of key artists in relation tohistoric practices, concepts and contexts. This will include tap dance, social/concert dance, and modern jazz danceinfluences.

DES3104: Advanced Prosthetic Make Up and Special Effects (20 credits)Advanced Prosthetic Make Up and Special Effects will deepen your knowledge and understanding of the uses ofprosthetic make up and SPX within the field of theatre, film and TV in order to explore and interrogate the usefulnessof its various applications and techniques. The module will incorporate introductory historical and theoreticalperspectives on some of the key examples in the field of prosthetic make up and SPX used in live and recordedperformance. You will develop skills in sculpting and moulding your own makeup prosthetics, focusing on how the

human anatomy relates to sculpture, thus creating the most realistic effects to enhance and mask the performer. Youwill engage with a number of artworks and conduct laboratory experiments, developing a technical vocabulary andcritical understanding of prosthetics and the body.

DRA3107: On the Road: Enabling Better Worlds (20 credits)On the Road: Enabling Better Worlds enables you to experience and interrogate interventionist theatre practice indiverse cultural, social and political contexts. Working as part of a group, you will have the opportunity to plan, createand implement a company-based practical project. This will involve all aspects of conceptualising, forming a sustainingan interventionist theatre company. You will generate an original company profile and devise a clear company purposeand intent. From applying for funding, through to project completion and evaluation, you will design and implementplacement-based events which explicitly address the needs of an agreed target audience or client group. Viablecreative and administrative structures will also need to be established.

MTH3104: American Musicals (20 credits)American Musicals is a module which recognises that while musical theatre is established as a global form, Americanmusical theatre retains a distinctive and influential identity. You will explore the emergence and development ofAmerican musical theatre throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The module focuses specifically upon a criticalexamination of the historical relationship between American musical theatre and identity formation from the nationalto the personal. While principally situated within the context of American national, sub-cultural and personal identityformation, the study of American musical theatres necessarily examines the global reach and impact of this specificform of musical theatre.

MTH3105: Directing for Musical Theatre (20 credits)Directing for Musical Theatre engages with the multi-faceted role of directing for musical theatre incorporatingtheories and approaches to contemporary directing theory and practice. You will investigate a variety of textsexploring directorial choices and approaches informed by research and practical exploration.

MTH3106: Professional Portfolio Development (20 credits)Professional Portfolio Development provides you with valuable experience and develops the requisite skills andpractical materials for future employment opportunities. The module will tie together your subject knowledge andpractical skills in the research and development of a detailed professional portfolio that may be used as a livedocument for the working musical theatre practitioner from the perspective of both creativity and business. The aim isto comprehensively explore and develop your professional strengths and capabilities as an individual and collaborativemusical theatre practitioner.

If you studied Language modules in Years 1 and 2, you may wish to study a further Language module in Year 3. Thiswould form an integral part of your degree in place of one of the optional modules above.

Optional modules provide an element of choice within the programme curriculum. The availability of optional modulesmay vary from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. This means that theavailability of specific optional modules cannot be guaranteed. Optional module selection may also be affected bytimetabling requirements.

In addition to the optional module choices listed above, it may be possible to apply to take an alternative 20 creditmodule in Year 2 and/or an alternative 20 credit module in Year 3 from outside the programme curriculum. Somerestrictions on this elective module choice may apply.

Timetables

Timetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You canexpect to receive your timetable for the rest of the academic year during your first week. Please note that while wemake every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place onany day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities.

Entry Criteria 2021/22

Entry Requirements

Typical offer 104-112 UCAS Tariff points, preferably toinclude Drama, Theatre Studies, Musical Theatre orDance. Other subjects will be considered if you havedemonstrable interest or experience in musical theatre.

All offers are made on the basis of an audition workshop.Applicants are asked to demonstrate their engagementand skill in singing, acting and dance. You will be asked toprepare and present a song from the musical theatregenre and take part in a practical dance workshop. Youwill also complete a written task, which gives you anopportunity to articulate your ideas about musicaltheatre practice.

Example Offers

Some examples of how you can achieve 104-112 UCASTariff points are detailed below.

• A Level: BCC-BBC;

• BTEC Extended Diploma (or combination of BTECQCF qualifications): Distinction, Merit, Merit(DMM);

• International Baccalaureate (IB): We are happy toaccept IB qualifications which achieve the requirednumber of UCAS Tariff points. Subject-specificrequirements at Higher Level (HL) Grade 5 mayapply;

• Access to Higher Education Diploma: 45 credits atLevel 3, for example 9 credits at Distinction and 36credits at Merit or 15 credits at Distinction and 30credits at Merit. The required total can be attainedfrom various credit combinations.

Please note, the above examples may differ from actualoffers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awardsmay also be accepted.

As long as you have a minimum of two A Levels (orequivalent), there is no maximum number ofqualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. Thisincludes additional qualifications such as the Welsh

Baccalaureate and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ),AS Levels that haven't been continued to A Level, andGeneral Studies AS or A Level awards.

Entry Criteria 2020/21

Entry Requirements

Typical offer 112 UCAS Tariff points, preferably toinclude Drama, Theatre Studies, Musical Theatre orDance. Other subjects will be considered if you havedemonstrable interest or experience in musical theatre.

All offers are made on the basis of an audition workshop.Applicants are asked to demonstrate their engagementand skill in singing, acting and dance. You will be asked toprepare and present a song from the musical theatregenre and take part in a practical dance workshop. Youwill also complete a written task, which gives you anopportunity to articulate your ideas about musicaltheatre practice.

Example Offers

Some examples of how you can achieve 112 UCAS Tariffpoints are detailed below.

• A Level: BBC;

• BTEC Extended Diploma (or combination of BTECQCF qualifications): Distinction, Merit, Merit(DMM);

• International Baccalaureate (IB): We are happy toaccept IB qualifications which achieve the requirednumber of UCAS Tariff points. Subject-specificrequirements at Higher Level (HL) Grade 5 mayapply;

• Access to Higher Education Diploma: 45 credits atLevel 3, for example 15 credits at Distinction and30 credits at Merit. The required total can beattained from various credit combinations.

Please note, the above examples may differ from actualoffers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awardsmay also be accepted.

As long as you have a minimum of two A Levels (orequivalent), there is no maximum number ofqualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. Thisincludes additional qualifications such as the WelshBaccalaureate and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ),

AS Levels that haven't been continued to A Level, andGeneral Studies AS or A Level awards.

What are my career prospects?

The programme prepares you for future employment byequipping you with a competitive, relevant set ofsubject-specific knowledge, understanding and practicalskills, alongside a comprehensive set of graduateintellectual and transferable skills. Emphasis is given toproviding skills development and practice in supportingstudents to appreciate the value of entrepreneurialengagement.

Our Employers' Advisory Panel (EAP) provide advice andsupport with curriculum development and thedepartment's EHU-Arts HUB offers a suite ofprofessional opportunities that will ensure you areindustry-ready.

Graduates will be qualified to seek a career in theatre,media, teaching (further training required), communitywork, professional companies, theatre administration,community arts and postgraduate study. Some of ourgraduates have set up their own independent theatrecompanies in fringe and community arts.

How can I enhance my employability?

It is useful to consider, even before you apply, how youwill spend your time while studying and make the most ofyour university experience.

Optional, additional activities may be available on thisdegree which could help to prepare you for a stimulatingand rewarding career. These include:

• Sandwich Years - you may have the opportunity toapply to complete a sandwich year placement,usually as the third year of a four year degree, andgain highly relevant work experience;

• Erasmus+ and Study Abroad - you may have theopportunity to apply to spend time studying orworking abroad, usually as the third year of a fouryear degree, enabling you to immerse yourself in adifferent culture;

• Learning a Language - you may be able to selectlanguage modules, delivered at the Edge HillLanguage Centre, as an integral part of your degree(for which you will gain academic credits).Alternatively, it may be possible to participate inLanguage Steps classes as additional study;

• Elective Modules – you may be able to apply tosubstitute one optional module in Year 2 and/orone optional module in Year 3 with alternativeelective modules from outside the programmecurriculum.

Please note, the availability of these additional activitiescannot be guaranteed for all students. Depending onavailability and the number of students wanting toparticipate, there may be a competitive applicationprocess for sandwich year placements or studying abroadopportunities or you may be required to secure a relevantplacement yourself.

Finance

Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will bejoining this undergraduate degree on a full-time basis inacademic year 2020/21, the tuition fee will be £9,250 perannum. Tuition fees for international students enrollingon the programme in academic year 2020/21 are£12,250 per annum.

If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will bejoining this undergraduate degree on a part-time basis inacademic year 2020/21, the tuition fee will be £77 percredit, i.e. £1,540 per 20 credit module. 360 credits arerequired to complete an undergraduate degree.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise intuition fees, in line with Government policy, insubsequent academic years as you progress through thecourse.

Financial Support

Subject to eligibility, UK and EU students joining thisundergraduate degree can apply for a Tuition Fee Loanfrom the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees.UK and EU students enrolling on the programme mayalso be eligible to apply for additional funding to helpwith living costs.
