BEFORE YOU BEGIN

The BA Degree in Visual Communications has 7 modules in first year:

Marketing, Visual Studies, Graphic Design, Art Direction, Digital Design,

Illustration and Photography. The theory subjects (Visual Studies and

Marketing) continue into second and third year, and you will be able to

choose a major and a minor from Graphic Design, Art Direction, Illustration

and Digital Design going into second year.

This skills challenge will assess your aptitude in all seven modules.

It should not take you more than 7 hours to complete the skills test. That’s

a Saturday, we know, but we think it will be a worthwhile investment to get

into our awesome school. And of course, it’s fun, so it won’t feel like work

at all!

SKILLS CHALLENGE ON!

1. Write no fewer than 650 words about yourself. In the essay, you should tell us about who you are and what you stand

for. Tell us about your proudest achievement, your hopes and plans for the future, and why you believe you should be

accepted into the programme.

2. Attach a creative (fun) photo of yourself that shows a bit of your personality.

3. Submit colour prints of what you believe to be the three (3) best pieces of any of your previous work showcasing some

creative pursuits you have done (doodles, drawings, paintings, photography, etc.) It doesn’t matter if you haven’t had formal

art lessons, or Art or Design as a school subject, just show us pieces you have completed on your own. (This may include

videos, gifs or other multi-media projetcs.). Please add a short caption so that we understand the context for each piece.

4. Give the Frantz Fanon quote below some thought, and in maximum 350 words explain your interpretation of the quote.

“Sometimes people hold a core belief that is very strong. When they are presented with evidence that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is extremely uncomfortable, called cognitive dissonance. And because it is so important to protect the core belief, they will rationalise, ignore and even deny anything that doesn’t fit in with the core belief.”

5. Draw three cellphone screens for a phone app that delivers coffee. Conceptualise a name for the app and draw the app

icon for the first / opening screen. The additional screens should show how the app works. The name and info can be

in any South African official language and aimed at any target market, but please provide a brief translation, below the

screen, if not in English. Think about how a user will use the app when you draw the buttons or fields. Submit the design

as a colour drawing on the mock-up provided overleaf.

6. Choose a typically South African object that we would be familiar with. Render it using mixed media of your own choice.

Think about the scale and placement of the object to make it an interesting composition on an A4.

7. Fontography - Use your cell phone and wander the streets (responsibly), find and photograph the letter shapes G, A and P

out there in nature, or in man-made objects. The letterforms can be upper or lower case. Fit all three photos onto an A4.

8. Name your top two blogs, websites, or social media accounts relating to the marketing/advertising/ design industry that

you frequent or follow and tell us why.

9. Select a printed advertisement from a magazine that is promoting any edible item. Please include a copy of the

advertisement in your test.

Explain in writing:

• At whom do you believe the advertisement is aimed?

• Do you think the advertisement is successful and why?

10. Which movie poster do you think is beautifully art directed? Name one thing that you would change / improve upon in

the art direction (this may include the idea portrayed). Find an image of the poster online and include it in the test.

11. Design a logo and packaging for a new iced tea that would compete with locally produced BOS Ice Tea. The new ice tea is

called EIGHT.

The design should include the logo, the flavour (Cranberry Chill or Black Currant). Be conceptual. Use a style you think

appropriate. Submit design as a colour drawing on the mock-up provided overleaf.

If you need clarity on any of the challenges do not hesitate to give us a shout. Good luck and enjoy!
