ForwardThese pages are derived from my personal passion for history and archives. I have always believed that the stories of the past, and the people who have inhabited these stories, are important. We learn much when we know from whence we came. Not only does wisdom have a chance of visiting those who choose to remember their past, but such knowledge also provides the gifts of belonging and community – the knowledge that we are not alone. To know the passion, dedication, faith and sacrifices of those people who have gone before us is to be part of a rich heritage. Belonging to such a heritage, not only guides and corrects us, but it also shores up our courage and inspires us to continue.

It was Elie Wiesel who wrote, “God created man because he liked stories.” This Compendium is the story of the Catholic Health Association of Canada (CHAC). My purpose for researching and compiling this Compendium is to help us not forget the people who are part of the Catholic health care story in Canada. The Compendium is also meant to provide testimony to the mission of Catholic health care in Canada, and the legacy of the values that many religious sisters and lay people practiced in a concrete way on a daily basis. To these ends I have attempted to be as accurate as possible with the names, dates and information included in this Compendium; any errors are my own.

Finally, while this book serves a practical purpose (how many times did we search through the files and archives at the CHAC office for one fact or another?); the Compendium is also a gift. Early on I realized that Richard Haughian was equally passionate about history, especially the history of the Catholic Health Association of Canada. I hope that in years to come he will cherish the memories contained in this book, and that these pages will remind him of the vital part he played in the Association for over twenty years.

Our mission is to witness to the healing ministry and abiding presence of Jesus. Our concern is for health in all its aspects: physical, emotional, spiritual, and social.

Because we see health as a condition for full human development, our Association encourages all activities destined to promote wellness, prevent disease, and cure sickness. We commit ourselves to work openly and earnestly, in both official languages, with all people in our society.

The Catholic Health Association of Canada, as a witness to God’s healing activity in the world, is committed to the promotion of a healthy society in which the love, hope and justice of the Gospel are revealed.

To achieve this goal, the CHAC will work with others to ensure that the Canadian society is marked by the following characteristics:

1. In all stages of life, and throughout the continuum of care, the dignity of life is respected.

2. Vibrant Catholic health and social service organizations, as communities of work and service, excel in providing compassionate care.

3. Ethical reflection, spirituality, and justice are widely promoted as central to Canada’s health and social systems.

4. The Church, and individual Christians, act out of a deepened sense of responsibility for the health and healing ministry.

5. Universal access to medically necessary services, regardless of the ability to pay, is protected as the defining feature of Canada’s health care system.

6. The social and economic needs of poor and marginalized people are recognized and given preferential attention.

7. Society endorses the social, economic and ecological determinants of health and incorporates them in public policy development.

The Catholic Health Association of Canada, as a witness of God’s healing activity in the world, is committed to the promotion of a healthy society in which the love, hope and justice of the Gospel are revealed. The values embraced by the CHAC are rooted in the life of Jesus.

We respect the intrinsic goodness, worth, spiritual integrity and equality of every person.

We comfort those who are sick, dying and least able to care for themselves.

We offer hope even when situations appear hopeless.

We offer support to those who are marginalized, and work with them to alleviate the causes of poverty.

We promote justice by taking the risks that are needed in order to change attitudes and structures.

The use of some sort of logo or image began in the late 1970s. For a few years this was used on convention programs and promotional material. You can see the initial use of the cross and maple leaf, symbols of a faith based health care in a national setting.

This simple cross and maple leaf were used in the early 1980s often accompanied and flanked by the acronyms CHAC and ACCS.

It was in 1987 that the standard logo (which became a familiar brand for the Catholic Health Association of Canada)

was first used. Although the coloured version was the official logo, it was often used in its black and white version or a toned one-colour version.

In March 2011 the Governing Council chose a new logo for the Catholic Health Alliance of Canada. The logo aligns with the mission and values of Catholic health care, and reflects the national nature of the Alliance. It also reflects the vibrancy of the Catholic health care c o m m u n i t y a n d i t s commitment to further Jesus’ mission of love and healing.
