Last year’s defending WADSCO Premier division champions from the Central Rugby Football Club head into 2011 looking to make it a hat trick – after they claimed the title in 2009 as well. This year the team is once again coached by Neville Saul and Graham Somerville and managed by Hamish Parker. Despite a few personnel changes from last season, they’re confi dent they can put up a sturdy title defence. The Senior A team, coached by Russell TeNgahue and Patrick Norton, are looking to be competitive again in Division two and the Club is also planning to put an Under 18 team into the Nelson competition and an Under

16 team into the Marlborough competition if player numbers allow. The Central Club is the only Club in Marlborough to fi eld a Womens team in the Nelson competition as well, so that’s a real point of difference for the Club. They’d be interested in hearing from any more women out there who are keen to lace up the boots this season. As always, the Club has a strong junior system and they’ll once again be fi elding a team in every JAB division. With a history dating back over a century, the Central Rugby Football Club are looking to notch up another year of success to back up the history of success they have already enjoyed.

Everyone at Moutere Rugby Club are looking forward to the beginning of the 2011 season. Club President Mark Taggart says Arthur the groundsman has Spring Creek’s Awarua Park in excellent condition once again as the teams in the black and white hoops look to stack up plenty of wins.Once again, Moutere’s JAB competition is seeing strong numbers, the club will have teams in the under 6, under 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11-year old categories as well as an under 14 1\2 team. Every player in the JAB programme with Moutere gets a free pair of shorts and club socks with their registrations this year too.

The Moutere under 16 team will be coached by Rob Avery and Bart Arnst and, in a change from last season, the Club will be fi elding an under 18 side – the fi rst such side they have had for a long time. This team will play in the Nelson competition which commences on May 7th. On Easter Thursday they will play a touring Napier Boys High School First XV in a match set up by coach Dave Pigou at Awarua Park. Moutere also plans to fi eld a Senior A team this year and interest from any new players is welcome – this team will be coached by Shane Waters and player/coaches Jason Pacey and Matt Flight. The Premier team is looking forward to

a big season with Hugh Murchison returning and joined by the new coaching triumvirate of Laurin Gane, Andrew Large and Steve Black at the helm. Mark reckons they have one of the best forward packs going around, boosted this year by young school-leaver prop Caleb Avery. There are still some spots open for backs in the team however, and the chance to play behind a big and powerful forward pack as well as contend for Tasman Makos selection are seen as major positives in drawing players to the Club. The team is also pleased to welcome Under 20 Makos representatives James Pigou, Benji Keenan and Johnny Andrews back to the team for 2011 to join club stalwarts Stu Campbell, Wayne Caldwell and Warwick DeWaal. The Club’s fundraising initiative of Awarua Park wine is still available at a number of Marlborough retailers as well and the Club is also looking forward to hosting a special dinner for overseas visitors during the Rugby World Cup at their Rapaura Road clubrooms. We look forward to seeing all our club members and supporters at Awarua Park to enjoy great rugby and a cold Weka.

Waitohi Rugby Club is looking forward to another season of top rugby with high expectations, just like in 2010. Having lost the WADSCO Premier Division fi nal for the last two seasons, the Club are looking to make it thrid time lucky this time around.Co-coaches and former Marlborough Red Devils Troy Looms and Nathan Peipi are looking to Daniel and Nathan Karena, Rory Wright, James Giles, Manu Mataele and Les Ivamy to lead by example, while youngsters such as Joe Stewart, Willie Karena and Daniel Hawkins will provide enthusiasm and plenty of energy for this exciting Waitohi side.A huge acquisition for the Club this season is Tasman Makos hooker Vernon Fredericks, who is currently recovering from an off-season shoulder operation. Other new additions include props Joel Nicklin and Aaron Whatuira, fl ankers Toby

Randell and Jordan Herbert as well as utility back Peter Bishell. The Waitohi Senior A will be lead by coaches Shane Stammers and Steve Mason and there are high hopes surrounding this team too.Waitohi’s JAB base is strong again this year with six teams competiting in various age groups from Under 6 to Under 14 ½.

“Waitohi is a Club with a strong community behind us,” President Mark Cooper says, “and in 2011 we’ll be looking to once again be the top Club in Marlborough – and hopefully Tasman. With the talented players we have, we know we can produce the same standard of rugby again. Of course, when it comes to JAB rugby, we need to acknowledge the support and efforts given by parents, grandparents, caregivers and aunties and uncles to these teams. Without them these kids would not be playing the game so, as a Club, we want to thank them for that.”

The Renwick Rugby Football Club’s focus is on developing and retaining players from junior level all the way to the senior and premier grades. “We’re a close-knit club,” President Hamish Macdonald says, “our senior sides work very closely together and are always happy to help out with the junior sides too. We’re going to have a Kids Day one Sunday this season and the Senior A and Premier teams will be involved with those. We’ve had the under 12’s team come along to Premier grade trainings too so they can experience how they do things and we’re looking forward to doing more of those sorts of initiatives. It’s all about developing that love of the game in the children, who are the future of our club, and working together for the good of the club and the players is the best way of doing that.”This will be the club’s second full season with the use of the fantastic facilities available in the Giesen Sports and Events Centre, which has done a lot for the

spirit of the club. Hamish says that there has been a big swell in the number of players and supporters attending the traditional after match functions and they’re looking forward to more of that this year. Each home game we will invite two of the junior teams to attend the aftermatch where they will be handed out their players of the day awards.“After one game last year, we had a lot of our players stay till late at the Events Centre along with players from Central to watch an All Blacks test – it’s an example of the way great facilities can build camaraderie amongst not just club members, but all the sportspeople that play there.”Both of Renwick’s Senior teams, the Senior A and Premier side, are looking to improve their performances after what was a fairly successful year in 2010, where the Premier’s made the semis and the Senior A’s made the fi nal. Both will be looking to go further this season, as they welcome the bulk of their both squads back for another tilt at the titles.

Having formed in 1888, the Marlborough’s southern-most Rugby Club is one of the oldest in New Zealand and they have a proud history to build on as another new season approaches. In 2011, the KKRFC has JAB teams in the Under 9’s, 11’s, 12s’ and under 14 1/2 grades, all are coached and supported by enthusiastic parents. The Club runs their own ‘rippa rugby’ locally too, with a mixture of under 6 to under 8 year olds playing rugby’s youth introductory version. Numbers are down in all grades from previous years, but there are strong numbers in the lower JAB grades, which the Club hopes will fi lter through into the higher age groups in years to come. The Kaikoura High School and St Joseph School grounds will be ready to go at the start of the season, with the back-up ground at the South Bay Race Course ready to go too if needed. One of the many experiences that years of

Kaikoura rugby players from under 9 up take in their stride is the two-hour bus ride to Blenheim. This journey is made by all players every second week and requires a big commitment from charitable trust funding, without which the Club would be unable to cover the costs of the 260km round trip. This trip itself is one of the more character building parts of living on the coast and is accepted when playing in the Marlborough competition. For those players who end up in Marlborough rep teams at the end of the club season,

they not only travel to games in Blenheim but also to trainings. You get an idea of the level of commitment and motivation made by these young players and their families from the coast – which is unyielding and determined.

In the senior competition the club is turning out Under 16, Senior A and Premier sides. The Under 16’s have unfi nished business from 2010 when they were defeated in the fi nal and have retained most of their young side. The two senior sides have a mixture of younger and older players and the Club is committed to continuing to rebuild the playing stocks and turn around the performances of the past few years – where victories have been scarce. Pre-season fi tness programmes have been relatively well attended and if the enthusiasm that was displayed in the recent pre-season Town vs Country game is anything to go by, the 2011 season should be a cracker. The Club’s main ground, Takahanga Domain, has had a lot of work put into the surface since last season, and the park is looking good with plenty of new grass growth establishing.

The Club is also planning on temporarily relocating to a local hotel during this year’s Rugby World Cup – allowing members to meet and watch games together.Furthermore, Kaikoura High School has an Under 14 and Under 16 team that will be playing inter-school games in the North Canterbury area this season - fi xtures have been arranged for Cheviot and Oxford. The club has also become involved hosting touring overseas rugby clubs. They are proud of their relationship with Christchurch-based ‘Total Rugby,’ who facilitates the overseas teams’ travel. Following on from a Canberra age group side in 2010, The Kaikoura Rugby Football Club are hosting and playing against the Crai RFC U18 side from Argentina in March. It all points towards a big year for the Club in 2011 and they’re looking forward to plenty of local support to see them post a whole lot more wins this season.

Kaikoura’s Under 12s played a touring Canberra age group side last year. Kyle Laugesen is pictured with ball. This year the Club will host a Crai RFC U18 side from Argentina under the same initiative.

Kaikoura’s Under 10 team won their final last year in challenging conditions at Lansdowne Park

The Awatere Rugby Club’s Junior programme is always very strong, with plenty of South Marlborough kids taking up the yellow and green jersey again this year and a number of teams hitting the fi elds every weekend in various age groups. In Senior rugby, the Senior A team is all set to have a crack at the title this year and the Premier team has been training for 5 weeks now – they have already had two pre-season games too. Coach Chris Ryan says the forward pack is especially strong this year and the backs are a line

up of very experienced and clever footy players.Last year, Chris and Steve Crockett coached the team, however Steve has been promoted to the role of coach for the Marlborough Red Devils. “He’s a big loss for us,” Chris says, “but

we hope to still be able to call on him in an assistants role throughout the season when he can make it – any input he can give will be valuable.”The Club is also hoping for a nice, quick grape harvest this year, as it always affects their player availability. “We lose some players for a

time so it’s tough on the reserves and hard to build early momentum,” Chris says, “it’s all part of life in the Awatere though, and we’re planning for a big season despite that.”

Awatere – winners of the 2010 Challenge Cup

Pelorus Rugby Club is looking in good stead for the new season. There will be two JAB teams this year for the youngsters and the Club will be fi elding age grade teams in the Under 16 division, who will play in the Marlborough Competition, and an Under 18 team will play in the Nelson Competition.

Being able to fi eld an Under 16 team is great news for the Club as it’s been around 14 years since they were last able to do so.

Their Senior A side is looking at

a good season too, with new coach Chris Cherry at the helm. Chris is a very experienced coach who has spent a lot of time coaching overseas and his services will be brilliant for the Club, according to President Denis Marfell.

“We’re in a better position than we were this time last year,” Denis says, “we’ve had

a few players come back to the Club and interest from a few new guys as well, so things are very positive.”With the Club’s traditional home ground in Canvastown still not in

good enough condition after the fl oods that affected the region in late December, Pelorus are playing their home games in Havelock this year and they’re hoping for plenty of local support there just like they have had in Canvastown for years.

Harlequins’ Will Gerrard dots down for a try during the WADSCO Division Two fi nal

Junior Afatia on the charge, sweeps aside the defenders 2010 WADSCO Division Two Final winners

Harlequins Rugby Football Club is Marlborough’s youngest club, but their short history has yielded plenty of success and the keen men and women behind the club are hoping for more of the same in 2011.“Our administration is very strong this year,” President Greg Newman says, “we have a very enthusiastic committee whose goals are to reinvigorate the social aspect of the Club and encourage past members to become involved.”As usual, Harlequins’ JAB base is very strong, with the Club able to fi eld junior teams in all grades. The Club prides itself on maintaining a strong family philosophy and parents are asked to be involved with the week-to-week running of their childrens’ team. There are high hopes too surrounding the senior teams in 2011. Harlequins will be fi elding an Under 16 team coached by Greg Marfell, who will be defending the championship they won last year. A lot of hope is invested in this side according to Greg, “they are the strength of the Club in terms of future player development, the stronger the age grade teams are – the better our prospects for the future.”The Senior A team will be coached by Graeme Bunker and a good squad has been assembled containing the bulk of last year’s championship winning team. The Premier team will represent a mix of

new and established names, chief amongst which is new Head Coach Graeme Hiku, assisted by Manager Donny Barrat who makes a welcome return.“We’re very happy to have Graeme on board,” Greg says, “he brings with him a good measure of enthusiasm, excellent pedigree in the game and he has recruited very well in the off season.”

Probably the Premiers most exciting new player is Tim Perry, who has moved to the Club from Mid-Canterbury. He was a nominee for the Heartland division player of the year last season and he comes to the Club with aspirations of reaching the top national level with the Tasman Makos.Returning to the squad for another year are notable backs Dan McDonald, Gavin Morrison and Makos aspirant Greg Knowles – while Willie Taualupe and Cedric Hiller earn deserved promotions from the Senior A to the Premier side this year.In the forward pack, the engine room of the team, Harlequins are pleased to welcome back Fetu Ieremia, Tom Cretney and Simon Muir among others – such as Ben Norton who is a promising player who missed most of last season with injury. Ben is a Marlborough Academy member and like all players in the team, a lot is expected from them in the upcoming season.

Marlborough Referee Ben O’Keeffe

That’s the simple message from Marlborough Referees Association President Lyall Daines. “There are some great opportunities opened up to people through refereeing,” he says, “and that’s not really recognised. Using my case as an example, I’ve only ever been an amateur referee but it’s still taken me half way around the world.”So why referee?Firstly, if for whatever reason your playing days are behind you – refereeing allows you to stay in the game. This was the case with Lyall, whose playing days ended with recurring concussions at the age of 18, even so he has remained involved with the game he loves since then by taking up the whistle rather than the ball.“Refereeing also gives you the best seat in the house,” he says, “I love rugby and I love the opportunity to give 30 players the best chance of playing a good game and I get the best view of some of the great plays that

happen week in and week out.”Further to all this, refereeing also offers you a career.“We have international standard training programmes for our referees and we offer a structured season with social networking opportunities and a high level of support. Wehave excellent referee coaches and benefi t from two test referees on those ranks in Dave Bishop and Kelvin Deaker. They are only too happy to pass on their vast experience to new referees and they are backed up by a quality coaching structure and internationally recognised offi cial qualifi cations. There is a successful career awaiting people who take up the chance to referee and we’ve got the experience and expertise in Marlborough to get you started on that career path.”So why not take up the whistle this season and see the opportunities available for yourself - you could go a long way with refereeing as your chosen sport.

Make refereeing your chosen sport!

The Marlborough Red Devils - 2010 Seddon Shield winners

Marlborough Rugby welcomes a new look line up at their Landsdowne Park offi ces for the new season, with Aaron Senior taking over the Area Manager role having vacated the job of Academy and Development Manager. This position will now be taken up by former Crusaders and All Blacks fullback Leon McDonald, who the Union is very pleased to welcome aboard – and Offi ce Manager, Jo, will be there for the season too.The biggest event Marlborough Rugby is preparing for this year is obviously the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The Russian team will be hosted by Marlborough Rugby, who will act as liaison for the team during their time here. The public will get the opportunity to see the Russian team practice at the open training sessions which will be held at Lansdowne Park and there will be a welcoming ceremony when they arrive that will be attended by many Marlborough notables. The Russian team doesn’t get much time off during the Cup, but when they do the Union will be organising outings all around the region for them to experience what Marlborough has to offer. Before the World Cup kicks off, the Union has a busy representative programme for this season. Highlights will include the Marlborough Red Devils’ Seddon Shield defence on August 6 against Nelson Bays. The Tasman Makos will be playing in the ITM Cup at the time so the match up looms as a real ‘locals-versus-locals’ encounter that will stir the passions of both regions. The Red Devils will be overseen this year by new Head Coach Steve Crockett and Assistant Coach Pete Jones as well as physio John Chamberlain, strength coach Frank Burns and Manager Paul Robb. There will be a Tasman Makos B team

this year too which will give more players a shot at representing their region and the Tasman Under 20 team will be looking to repeat their success of 2010 where they beat Canterbury in the South Island fi nal with nine Marlborough players in the side. There are also plans for an Under 13 South Island rep tournament towards the end of the season. The Under 18 and Under 16 Marlborough sides have similar schedules for their South Island Championships, but instead of a week long tournament like last year, the format will now consist of weekly round robins leading up to the fi nals weekend. In Junior Rugby, Marlborough will be fi elding teams in the Under 14, Under 13, Under 11, Under 65kg, Under 52kg and

Under 48kg categories, with a tentative plan to fi eld an Under 10 side as well. Another highlight sees an inaugural ‘Rippa’ Rugby World Cup to be held in Auckland on August 8 and 9 for year 6 children. Each team at the tournament, consisting of 5 boys and 5 girls, will be allocated a World Cup team to represent and there will be a range of fun activities put on as well. “We have a very comprehensive representative calendar this year,” Aaron says, “and that will give more players to the chance to represent their region and play rugby at a higher level – so

we’re looking forward to a big season in 2011 and we’re aiming to represent Marlborough and Tasman with distinction and bring plenty of silverware back for the trophy cabinet too.”
