An Intensive Internship training on “3D Experience” was held at Product Design Lab at Department of Mechanical Engineering, BMSCE, for students of Mechanical Engineering and Professors during 1

nd June 2017. A total of 22 members (5 final

year students, 10 pre-final year students, 6 faculties and 1 instructor) were trained from Dassault Systemes on their cutitng edge technology “3D Experience” to bridge the gap between academia and industry. The training included self-paced learning, continuous industry interaction and support from experts of Dassault Systemes and 3D PLM India. This industry internship made the best use of most of virtual tools, modern tools, high end infrastructure and support from staff and industry colleagues in making students learn to solve complex problems of industries.

Five Professors from Department of Mechanical Engineering, BMSCE, have been identified by Dassault Systemes, France, to represent India with few others from the country for the PLEX programme. Short Term Training Program – AFEMA-2017

17th to 28th July 2017

A Two-week Short Term Training Programme on Advances in Finite Element Methods and Applications was organized by Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Civil Engg and EEE in association with ISTE-BMSCE Chapter, between 17

th to 28

th July 2017.

The training programme comprised of 18 lecture sessions, 6 laboratory sessions, 10 sessions on demonstration of capabilities of leading commercial packages, and one day industrial visit. The experts were from academia (IISc, IIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Delhi, CME-Pune), faculty from BMSCE and 9 practicing professionals from Industries (NAL, Altair, CoreEl Technologies, ANSYS and COMSOL). The number of registered participants benefited by the programme are 95, all of them being teaching faculty from colleges across Karnataka with specializations in CV, ME, EEE, EC, Maths and allied branches.

Industrial Visit

13th October 2017

An industrial visit to M/s ACE Designers, Peenya, Bengaluru was arranged for students of 3rd

semester ‘B’ section of Mechanical Engineering branch on 13

th October 2017.

Ace Designers is one of India’s largest machine tool manufacturing companies. Its manufacturing plants producing CNC turning centres located in Bangalore, India, are equipped with state of the art technology to deliver large scale high quality products.

A total of 37 students and two faculty members visited two manufacturing shop floors and one assembly plant involving sheet metal and welding processes of the CNC machine parts, manufacturing of high precision components pertaining to the CNC machine, demonstration of assembly of Vertical turning centre and Jig boring machines.

A Guest Lecture Mr. Chandramouli N., Director, Bangalore Aerospace Consultancy, Bengaluru, on the topic “Customer centric problem solving skills for Entrepreneurs” was arranged on 24

th October 2017 at 11.15 A.M to 12.45 P.M. in Mechanical

Engineering Seminar Hall, BMSCE. It was the 108th

lecture in the Extension Lecture Series. The event was organized by the Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA).

Mr. Chandramouli spoke about the fundamentals and issues related to management and entrepreneurship with respect to the current industry scenario along with few live case studies on startups. He also spoke about smart manufacturing solutions, Aerospace manufacturing, differences between costumers and consumers etc. He stressed upon the quality practices, their importance and requirement in current industrial scenarios, Key success factors and Challenges for scaling up of business.

The talk was attended by about 120 students of UG and PG along with the faculties of Mechanical Engineering.

Visit to CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories’ three-day exhibition, conducted as part of CSIR-Platinum Jubilee year, was arranged by the department to students of III semester B.E. (120 students) and I semester M.Tech. (35 students) on 25

2017. Five faculty members (Smt. Rashmi R., Sri. Suhas B. G., Sri. Narendra Babu N., Sri. Shashiraj, and Dr. Shivashankar R Srivatsa) facilitated the visit.

The three-day exhibition open for students, parents, teachers, professors, farmers, business persons, Industrialists, Lawyers, Lawmakers, Administrators and General public showcased and highlighted the CSIR contributions to the Nation for the last 75 years. Yoga Programme

3rd to 9th January 2018

ISTE-BMSCE Chapter and Physical Education Department, BMSCE collaboratively conducted a week long workshop on ‘Yoga And Meditation For All’ held at BMSCE from 03/01/2018 to 09/01/2018. More than 70 participants which included students, faculties and supporting staff of various departments of BMS College of Engineering were benefited. The weeklong event included yoga and meditation sessions. The experts included Dr. Kavitha Sooda, Dept. of CSE, Dr. Rajeshwari Hegde, Dept. of TE and a team of our own students from Yoga team of the college. External faculties included Mr. Sidhu from Rastrothana Yoga Kendra, Mrs. Sushma from BMS Hospital, Dr. VasanthaKumari from Heartfullness Institute. STTP on FEAS


One - week short Term Training Program on "Finite Element Analysis and Simulation" was conducted by Department of Mechanical Engineering under TEQIP-III from 8 – 12 January 2018. The course had lecture sessions, demonstration, software training and hands-on laboratory sessions. The number of participants were 28 being faculty from various Polytechnics across Karnataka state.

Highlight of this programme was that all the experts for the sessions were faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, BMS College of Engineering.

The programme was coordinated by Dr. L. Ravikumar, Dr. Shivashankar R. Srivatsa, Prof. Rajesh P., Prof. Shashiraj and Dr. J. Sharana Basavaraja of Department of Mechanical Engineering.

A visit to IMTEX-2018 at Bangalore International Exhibition Center, Tumkur Road, Bangalore, was organized on 29th January 2018 to IV & VI Semester students from B.E, PG students of M.Tech. (Machine Design) and M.Tech. (Manufacturing) accompanied by the faculty members of the department. . The theme of this year’s exhibition was Metal Forming.

The students got the opportunity to interact with the personnel from the Industry and understand the processes involved in Machining with greater detail. Students could relate to the theoretical concepts learnt in college by observing the working of machines which were on display.

FESTO–Mobile Expotainer, a fully self-contained exhibition vehicle providing a display of the very latest equipment in the field of automation technology utilizing pneumatics and electronics, was invited to our college on 21st February, 2018 from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm. The event featured a variety of dynamic and static displays in the field of Automation. Over 100s of students visited the facility. Mr. Vijayakumar, 2013 passed out Alumni of BMS College of Engineering and student of Mechanical Engineering and his team who were part of The Wheel Chair Cricket Team of Karnataka were felicitated by the Management of BMSCE. Sri. P Dayananda Pai, Chairman, BMSCE, Dr. K Mallikharjuna Babu, Principal, BMSCE and other senior members of faculty and staff were present in the felicitation.

This team from Karnataka finished as Runners up in the recently held 1st National Wheelchair Cricket Tournament in New Delhi between 12 Jan and 11 Feb, 2018. Financial support to the extent of Rs. 50,000/- was provided by BMSCE.

A Health Awareness Program was held on Saturday, 03.03.2018 at 11.30am in Mechanical Engineering Seminar Hall. Sri. B. K. Madhu from Bramhakumari Eshwari Viswa Vidyalaya, (Bangalore University Center) delivered a talk on "How to keep Health & Wealth of the Human Body" (SANSKAR).

Guest Lecture

5th March 2018

Dr. Tejus Canchi, PhD in Cardiovascular Biomechanics from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, delivered a Guest Lecture on the topic “Biomechanics: Perspective and Opportunities for Mechanical Engineers”. The event was organized by Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA) from 11:30 am – 12:45 pm that was held at Mechanical Engineering Seminar Hall.

Dr. Tejus Canchi, a proud alumni of BMSCE, gave an overall insight of engineering involved in the field of Biomechanics. Real time examples were quoted and significance of biomechanics was highlighted. The talk was attended by about 120 students of UG 6th semester along with the faculties of Mechanical Engineering.

Industrial Visit

7th March 2018

An Industrial Visit to M/s Legend Technologies, Doddanekkundi Industrial area, Bengaluru, An Aerospace Industry, was arranged on Wednesday, 07-03-2018 for the students of VIII Semester 8am to 5.30 pm. Students visited facilities used for manufacturing of the nose cone of the rocket boosters utilized in the mothership PSLV. The facilities visited also included component manufacturing chains, pressing machines of high tonnage, etc.

21st March 2018

DYNAMECH, Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA) Day was celebrated on 21st March 2018 at 2.00 P.M. in BMS Auditorium. The event was organized by the Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA). The Program was inaugurated by Chief Guest Dr. K. N. Seetharamu, Chair Professor, PES University. Dr. K. Mallikharjuna Babu, Principal, BMSCE, Dr. B. V. Ravishankar, Vice Principal, Dr. Rudra Naik, In-charge HOD, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, and Dr. Tataram K Chavan, Chief Coordinator, MEA, BMSCE were present. The event was attended by all faculty & students of Dept. of Mechanical Engineering.

As a part of MEA day, a week before DYNAMECH2018, MEA coordinators conducted many recreational activities / competitions for staff and students of the department. The staff activities included: Filmy Quiz, Thhat antha helhi, Padabandha (Cross word puzzle), Nudi kannada, etc. All teaching and non-teaching staffs are actively participated in these events.

Prizes for all the competitions were distributed during the function. More than 300 students from both UG and PG programs and staffs of Mechanical Engineering department attended the program.

On stage events such as Songs, Dance, Comedy skits, Stand-up comedy, Yakshagana, Drama, etc. were eye-catching and well appreciated by the audience.

SOLAR CHULHA CHALLENGE

The project titled “Design and Development of a Solar Electric Chulha Using a Novel Cooking Unit”, submitted in joint collaboration with Nuetech Solar System Pvt. Ltd. Bangalore has been awarded second place at an all India level Solar Chulha Challenge held at New-Delhi, organized by ONGC and MNRE- Govt. of India from 21.04.2018 to 25.04.2018. Prof. Praveen Hunashikatti of Mechanical Department and Prof. Harish Mekali of E&C department represented BMSCE. The ONGC Solar Chulha challenge had received over 1500 applications. An Expert Panel of Scientists & Industry Experts headed by Dr Anil Kakodkar, Former Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission evaluated the applications. Thirteen applications were shortlisted by the panel during their 1st meeting on 6th January 2018. These teams were then invited to present their proposals to the Expert Panel during its 2nd Meeting on 24 February 2018 at Mumbai, after which the panel selected the finalists with proposals from both Solar Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal based systems.

A guest lecture by Dr. Satyapal Hegde, Director, M/s. Prasanna Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, was organised on 3rd May 2018 on the topic “Introduction to Thermography”. This lecture was organized by the Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA) as Extension Lecture Series – 113.

Fundamentals and working principle of Infrared cameras, industrial applications were discussed along with demonstration on their usage. The talk was attended by about 20 students of Postgraduate programs along with the faculties of Mechanical Engineering.

As a part of Industr-Institute-Interaction, a team from M/s. Caterpillar, Engines Division, Whitefield, Bengaluru visited Department of Mechanical Engineering on 18th May 2018. The team consisted of Team Manager and associates that included Mr. Sweekar, Alumni of BMSCE. Discussions were held by a team of professors from Mechanical Department coordinated by Prof. R. Suresh Kumar.

The meeting concluded with an agreement from both sides to make an MOU through which the Industry could participate in curriculum development, content delivery, Training faculty and students in software used by the industry, Internships, Placements & Projects to the students.
