Back-to-back carbon monoxide (CO) incidents in an Ontario city within one week of each other reaffirm what safe-

ty officials keep telling Canadians, the risk of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning is not only a danger linked to cold weather and furnaces. In two recent emergencies in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario faulty rental water heaters were the source of the deadly carbon monoxide gas. The occupants very likely owe their lives to the recently enacted bylaw in Sault Ste. Marie that makes carbon monoxide alarms mandatory for all dwell-ings. Without a carbon monoxide alarm, they would have been unaware of the deadly gas.

Every contractor, every service tech,

every installer can make a difference in your customers and your own families lives through education about the dangers of CO and the necessity of a CO alarm to monitor their homes and places of work. CO alarms can be provided, existing ones checked and batteries replaced as a value added service you can provide when performing an annual heating systems service check and cleaning which should include a combustion test of all heating appliances including water heat-ers and fireplaces to ensure proper and safe operation.

Every service tech should have access to a combustion analyzer and this issue we’re giving away the new model 716 combustion

analyzer from tpi valued at $1,600. One lucky Contracting Canada reader who completes the Contractor Survey on page 21 will have the opportunity to win this great prize com-pliments tpi and Contracting Canada maga-zine so send in your completed survey today!

A/C System Testing Basics Use Critical A/C System Tests to Promote Your Business and Build Trust/Credibility with CustomersBy Russell Harju, Product Manager, Fieldpiece Instruments

A couple years ago a co-worker saw an ad in the paper for an $80 A/C tune up. Although we have several

certified technicians on staff at Fieldpiece, sometimes it’s just easier to have somebody that tunes A/C systems everyday to work on our home systems. He came out, replaced the filter, cleaned the condenser and hooked up his low side gauge to the suction line. He looked at his pressure gauge and told our guy (his customer,) “That’s about right, I’ve been doing this twenty years.”

No questions were asked, he received his $80, a mental note was made to tune our A/C systems ourselves and off he went. The unit in question was a R-410A system with a TXV. These systems are properly charged using the subcooling test which is done on the liquid line side of the air conditioner. As you may expect, there was very little comfort that the air conditioner was working any bet-ter than before he got there.

The next day the head engineer from Fieldpiece Instruments came out and per-formed a full efficiency analysis on the sys-tem. He was testing out some of the new products Fieldpiece was developing and tun-ing up the A/C in the process. The long and short of the analysis was that the system was starved of refrigerant and a healthy dose of R-410A needed to be added.

Proper testing in the field is one of the important jobs for a technician to perform and the only way to diagnose system prob-lems. Knowing how and when to perform the tests and what to do with the results is essential to being a good technician. In this article I’m simply giving a refresher course on critical A/C tests, namely superheat, subcooling and target evaporator exit tem-perature AKA temperature drop. This over-view gives technicians the basic “knowledge tools” they needs to get his job done easier, faster and at a higher quality.

Superheat - Target and ActualSuperheat is the temperature rise in the refrigerant after it boils in the evaporator. The refrigerant leaves the throttle valve (fixed orifice, capillary tube, TXV) and enters the evaporator as a low pressure, low temperature liquid. As air from the building is blown across the evaporator, the heat is taken out of the air and added to the refrigerant. As heat is added to the liquid refrigerant the refrigerant boils and changes to a gas. The temperature at which a substance (in this case a refrigerant) changes from a liquid to a gas is known as the boiling point or saturation temperature. The change of state happens in the evapo-rator. As the refrigerant continues out of the evaporator and onto the compressor heat is added to the refrigerant. The added heat to the refrigerant between the boiling point and the compressor is the superheat.

Superheat is used for properly charging fixed ori-fice systems. Superheat is important for two reasons:

The first reason is to know if the evaporator is doing its job and the A/C system is running efficient-ly. If there is no superheat, very little heat is being taken out of the return air and hence the air being supplied to the space is the same temperature as the air being returned to the evaporator.

The second reason is to save the life of the com-pressor. The compressor is designed to compress (add pressure) to gas refriger-

ant. It is not powerful enough to compress liquid refrigerant and it will burn up the compressor. It’s like pushing on a brick wall. The compressor is also designed to be cooled by the refrigerant it compresses. When the superheat is too high the com-pressor is working at higher than normal temperatures and can cause it to overheat.

To measure the superheat, first you place a thermocouple (there are pipe clamps specifically designed for this) on the suction line near the compressor and record the measured temperature. Next attach a pressure gauge to the suction line service valve, measure and record the read-ing. Using a pressure/temperature chart or pressure temperature calculator find the boiling point (saturation temperature) of the refrigerant at that specific pres-sure. Subtract the saturation temperature from the temperature measure from the thermocouple and that is the total system superheat.

We now have the actual superheat but how do we know that is an acceptable superheat? Using the target superheat table from California’s Title 24, which can be found at www.energy.ca.gov/title24, we can look up the target superheat based on the indoor and outdoor conditions.

Important: Rules of thumb are out. Between 8 and 12 degrees of superheat is out. Sophisticated target superheats derived by the experts are in!

Measure and record the ambient air tem-perature going into the condenser. Make sure to measure in the shade and get

the average temperature going into the condenser. Next measure the wet bulb temperature going into the evaporator. Place the ther-mocouple in the center of the airflow in the duct near the evaporator. If using a wet sock thermocouple, watch the temperature sta-bilize before recording it. Use the outdoor ambient air temperature and the return air wet bulb to look up the target superheat on the chart.

Compare the actual superheat to the target superheat. If the actual is greater than the tar-get, add refrigerant. If the actual is less than the tar-get, remove refrigerant. Adjust the charge until the actual superheat is within Superheat - Target and Actual

±3 degrees Fahrenheit of the target superheat. How much refrigerant to add or remove will be based on the size of the system and how far off the superheat is. A good way to dial in the correct charge is by using a digital superheat tool such as Fieldpiece’s ASX14 accessory head, or SSX34 superheat subcool-ing standalone meter. This way you can watch the superheat live rather than continually recalculating the superheat.

Subcooling and Systems Regulated by TXVsA TXV (Thermal Expansion Valve) is a device between the condenser and evapo-rator that regulates the pressure of the refrigerant and how much refrigerant is let into the system. It is designed to keep the superheat constant and because of this a TXV system is charged using subcooling. Subcooling is the temperature decrease after refrigerant condenses in the condens-er. The refrigerant leaves the compressor as a high pressure, high temperature gas. Air is blown across the coil, removing heat from the refrigerant. This is the same heat that was added to the refrigerant in the evaporator coil and it is now being moved outside where it is not making anyone uncomfortable. As heat is removed from the refrigerant in the condenser the refrig-erant condenses and changes to a liquid state, known as the condensing point or saturation temperature. As it travels to the TXV valve it is still giving off heat and decreasing in temperature. The tempera-ture decrease after the condensing point is the subcooling.

Much like superheat the subcooling needs to be adjusted to the proper level in order to ensure maximum capacity of the condenser and efficiency of the sys-tem. If there is too much subccoling the refrigerant condenses too early and wastes the capacity of the condenser. Too little subcooling and the refrigerant does not fully condense and enters the TXV as a liquid/gas mixture with causes low system efficiency.

To measure the subcooling, attach a ther-mocouple to the liquid line after the con-denser (again a pipe clamp is recommend-ed) and record the measured temperature. Next attach a pressure gauge to the liquid

line service valve, measure and record the reading. Using a pressure/tempera-ture chart or a pressure/temperature calculator, find the condensing point (satu-ration temperature) at that specific pressure. Subtract the condensing point tem-perature from the actual liq-uid line temperature to find your actual subcooling.

Important: Unlike super-heat, the target subcooling varies from system to sys-tem. Manufacturers usually provide a target subcooling chart on the name plate of the system. If it is not on the name plate, call the manu-facturer. If you cannot find

a target subcooling, as a last resort use 12 degrees Fahrenheit of subcooling. Compare the actual subcooling to the target subcool-ing. If there is too much subcooling, remove refrigerant. If there is too little subcooling, add refrigerant. Adjust refrigerant charge until the subcooling is within 3 degrees of the target subcooling.

Target Evaporator Exit Temperature - Diagnosing Potential Airflow and Capacity Problems running A/C systems. Airflow is crucial to properly A good way to check airflow is to look at the air tempera-ture exiting the evaporator vs. the target evaporator exit temperature. To find the target evaporator exit temperature mea-sure and record both the wet bulb and dry bulb temperatures going into the evapora-tor. California’s Title 24 provides a chart for the proper temperature drop across the coil. Use the wet bulb and dry bulb temperatures to find the temperature drop on the chart and subtract this from the actual dry bulb temperature entering the evaporator. This figure will be the target evaporator exit temperature. To find the actual evaporator exit temperature, use a thermocouple and measure and record the air temperature exiting the evaporator at the center of airflow.

Compare the actual evaporator exit tem-perature to the target evaporator exit tem-perature. If the actual is greater than the target the airflow could be too high or more likely the evaporator has a low capacity. If the actual is less than the target there is a low airflow. Adjust the airflow until the actual evaporator exit temperature is

within ±3 degrees Fahrenheit of the target.

Proper Testing vs. “Winging It”Proper testing is just the start for quality service and can ultimately lead the tech-nician to more business and make more money. Going back to the tech that was hired last year, if he were to have demon-strated proper testing practices he would have been at my house this year getting my A/C unit ready for this summer. Following the simple, yet critical, practices outlined above can also be used to sell yourself as a “green” technician because they will make every unit you touch more efficient – saving the customer money and reducing overall energy demand. And we need that more than ever with the ever-increasing price and demand for energy. The lower the demand, the less we all pay (just look at gas prices).Customer service is also a way to gain more business.

If you can create customer loyalty by using these tests to educate your customer, they will likely call you back next year for routine maintenance or next time they want a new system. If they trust you, they are yours...forever.

There are endless ways to sell and mar-ket your services but proper testing is the only place to start.

B rantford, Ontario – Three back-to-back carbon monoxide incidents in two separate provinces over a

10-day period this summer reaffirms what safety officials keep telling Canadians: the risk of accidental carbon monoxide poi-soning is not only a danger linked to cold weather and furnaces.

In all three emergencies – two in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and one this past week-end in Regina, Saskatchewan – malfunction-ing water heaters were the source of the deadly carbon monoxide gas.

“Without a carbon monoxide alarm, each of these three families would have been unaware of the deadly gas,” says John Gignac, co-chair of the Hawkins-Gignac Foundation for CO Education based in Brantford, Ontario. “Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because it is colour-less, odorless and tasteless. The only way it can be detected by humans is with a

CSA-approved CO alarm” says Cignac.

Gignac says his Foundation for CO Education advo-cates that carbon monoxide alarms be made the law for every Canadian home. The retired firefighter has pushed for manda-tory CO alarm leg-islation in Ontario since his niece, Ontario Provincial Police constable Laurie Hawkins, perished along with her husband and two children in Woodstock, Ontario in December 2008. It was one of Canada’s worst ever carbon monoxide tragedies.

Three incidents in two separate provinces prove Carbon Monoxide poisoning is NOT just a cold weather risk

“Carbon monoxide is a four-season killer, not just during cold winter months,” Gignac says. “Canadians are at risk during the summer too, due to the high number of gas appliances in our homes, cottages, trail-ers and even boats. Water heaters, stoves, fireplaces and car or boat engines put every family at risk. For about two cents a day Canadian families can protect themselves. It is a risk everyone must take seriously.”

Annual Inspections of every fuel burn-ing appliance in homes, business and rec-reational properties are vital to prevent Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Likewise for watercraft with sleeping quarters.

CO SAFETY TIPS:1. Have a licensed professional inspect

all fuel-burning appliances annually. Boaters with watercraft that have sleep-ing quarters, generators and/or inboard gas engines should also have annual inspections and CO alarms.

2. Replace carbon monoxide alarms every 5-7 years or in accordance with manufac-turer recommendations.

3. Replace batteries in CO alarms at least once annually

4. Consider purchasing CO alarms that have a digital display, which will alert

you before harmful levels of the invisible gas are reached.5. If your CO alarm

sounds, evacuate immediately and call 911.

For the price of a couple batteries or a CO alarm you can gain customer appre-ciation and loyalty to last a lifetime.

It’s crucial that everyone working on combustion equipment today have access to a properly functioning and certified combustion analyzer when installing and servicing combustion equipment. It’s important to receive proper training on the operation and testing procedures for the combustion analyzer you will be using. Do your part and test your customers’ combustion equipment and ensure safe operation.

Diagnosing Control Transformer Failures by James Ewart

T he control transformer used in many HVAC appliances is a mar-vel in simplicity, a device with

two coils and a few lamination plates to support the coils in position and mounting brackets.

By all accounts the transformer should out last the appliance, but unfortunately this is not always the case as a transformer break down usu-ally occurs as a result of overheating of the windings. There are many causes for overheating but the main one is a faulty coil winding or a direct short to ground in one of the control devices. Finding these short circuits can some-times be a daunting experience for a technician.

One fatal mistake is to install a new transformer thinking that the old one just burned out for no apparent reason, then turning on the power to the new unit only to fry the new transformer. A good practice after installing a new transformer is to install a fused jumper between the load connection and sys-

tem, also connect an amp meter with a load locking feature; this will give a precise load value prior to the fuse opening. Knowing this

Load value will give you the impor-tant information required to evaluate a plan of attack.

A good place to start your search is with the appliance manufacturer’s specifications pertaining to the total load of all the control devices involved.

If this information is not available a resistive check of each individual con-trol device will be necessary. This is when a catalogue from a control manu-facturer or access to the internet and the control manufacturers’ website is invaluable. These catalogues provide all the specifications required to check a control device coil as well as the high voltage and current on the device contacts. It is important to check the contact loads as they may even be the source of the problem. Remember In troubleshooting this problem, Ohms law is the tool of choice.

This is an example of a homemade fuse jumper every service tech should use to test and safeguard against shorting out a control. It’s easier and less expensive to replace a fuse then a control.

8 Ways to Use Price (Without Discounting)

To Get More Customersby Matt Michel

H ere are my eight tips to help you generate more customers and profits

without having to discount your prices.

1.ChargeaGuaranteedPriceA guaranteed price is a flat rate price. This is the same as a “not to exceed” estimate. Numerous research studies show that con-sumers hate open invoices. Consumers do not have the expertise to judge whether a repair should take 30 minutes or three hours. This is why consumers try to pin field service personnel down to a hard number. They pester technicians to say how long a repair will take or how much it will end up costing. If the tech offers a number, that amount becomes “fixed” in the consumer’s mind. Whether intended or not, the tech just offered a flat rate price. Why not do what more than 90% of con-sumers want and offer flat rate pricing. Guarantee your prices.

2.FlexYourPricesYou offer some parts and products that are relatively easy for homeowners to obtain and you offer some services that are simple and easy for the homeowner to tackle. By contrast, other parts and products are practically impossible for the layperson to obtain and other services are too distaste-ful, difficult, or impractical for the average homeowner to consider. Lower the margin on the former parts, products, and services, while raising margins on the latter. This is flex pricing. Retailers have done it for years.

The objective of flex pricing is to gener-ate an average margin equal to, or greater than the company’s target margin, which is the margin necessary to cover overhead, generate a return for the investors’ capital, and provide funds for reserves and future growth. Because you’ll capture more busi-ness involving parts, products, and services homeowners can source and provide on their own, you should capture more repair business.

3.NeverChargeOvertimeIf you allocate your overhead against your standard labour hours, how much is left to charge against overtime hours? None. All you need cover with overtime is your direct costs. Everything else falls to the bottom line. You field service pay increases for overtime work, but the increase is almost always less than the overtime component of your standard labor. In fact, I’ve never yet met a contractor whose overhead per hour was less the fully burdened top technician or plumber pay per hour. This means contrac-tors could double time for overtime work, charge the customer standard rates, and still drop more to the bottom line.

There is a catch. If you charge standard pricing 24/7, you might pull some business from your standard hours into overtime. As long as your estimate of standard labor hours is accurate, this won’t impact your pricing or bottom line. Since you will cap-ture more after hours calls if you promote “no overtime,” you’ll actually boost sales and the bottom line.

Some contractors avoid overtime work. They charge more to discourage calls that can be delayed. This works for compa-nies with plenty of business that want to avoid burning out field service personnel. Nevertheless, these companies are leaving money on the table. Maybe they should consider adding capacity.

4.ProvideReferencePricesService Roundtable contractor, Bob Ring, tired of his commercial customers grip-ing about his rates. He asked the Service Roundtable to assemble a pricing reference chart that compares his prices and service delivery with other services, such as copier repairs, lift truck repairs, and so on. Bob’s point was that his prices are in line with other service company prices. He didn’t compare himself with clueless competitors, but successful service companies from dif-ferent fields.

5.SellLessForMoreWalk into any grocery store and check the prices for packaged goods. Unit prices are higher when packages are smaller. Contractors should prices similarly. Instead of selling refrigerant by the pound, for example, sell it by the ounce and increase the price per ounce.

6.VaryYourResponseChargeWithDemandWhen demand picks up and you’re strain-ing to cover the volume of calls coming in, increase your response charge. Charge more for same day or priority service. Hotels charge more when demand picks up. So do rental car companies and airlines. Demand is higher for the Super Bowl than any other football game and the ticket pric-es escalate accordingly (even so, scalpers prove that the NFL leaves money on the table and could charge even more). Even the post office charges more for priority service. Why not you?

7.SellPaymentsThe entire car leasing industry is built on the premise that people buy based on cash flow rather than total price. This is espe-cially true when the economy falters. It may be challenging to find financing sources, but they’re out there. Independent, local and regional banks have money to lend. Call on them and work out financing arrangements.

8.SellBreakdownInsurance(ButCallItSomethingElse)Service Roundtable and Retail Contractor Coalition member Steve Miles added a sea-sonal breakdown guarantee for a small extra fee. Once the company performs a tune-up, any repairs through the season ending date Steve specified are on the house. Thousands signed up for the program and only a few systems actually needed repairs. The program was a huge success.© 2010 Matt Michel

2012 AHR EXPO will be the largest event in show’s 82-year history

Westport, CT. – The 2012 AHR EXPO at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL January 23 – 25, will be the largest show in history eclipsing the 2006 AHR EXPO show record with more than 1,700 exhibiting companies from 34 countries with more than 130 first time exhibitors and over 300 non-U.S. exhibitors. As the largest AHR Expo of all-time, the 2012 Show may also be on track to establish new records for total attendees (59,079) and registered visitors (38,534), excluding exhibitor personnel.

“We are very pleased about achieving this new all-time record, especially as this is our company’s 100th Anniversary,” said Clay Stevens, President of International Exposition Company, which produces and manages the AHR Expo. “Historically, the number of attendees tends to increase pro-portionately with the increase in square footage.” Stevens attributes much of this growth to more companies introduc-ing new energy efficient equip-ment, as well as the anticipation that their customers will need to replace out-dated equipment that they have been nursing through an uncertain economy.

Stevens said that another rea-son for the record exhibit space is that AHR Expo covers all seg-ments of the HVACR industry, including the new solar and sus-

tainable technologies that are experiencing strong growth. A comprehensive educational pro-gram featuring more than 100 sessions and special show fea-tures also attracts a significant number of HVACR professionals from around the world.

As the world’s largest and most comprehensive exclusively HVACR exposition, the AHR Expo attracts tens of thousands of attendees from all facets of the industry, including contrac-tors, engineers, dealers, distribu-tors, wholesalers, OEMs, archi-tects, builders, industrial plant operators, facility owners and managers, agents and reps.

In addition, more than 130 educational sessions and work-shops addressing all facets of the HVACR industry are offered by leading industry associations and organizations during the three days of the Show, many free of charge.

Since 1930, the AHR Expo has been the HVACR profes-sional’s best resource for new products, new ideas and new services. It’s a hands-on, inter-active event that showcases a wide spectrum of equipment, systems, and components. This unique industry forum creates a dynamic marketing environ-ment unequaled in size and scope by any other industry event. For more information go to www.ahrexpo.com.
