G. Caldwell, director, Veterans Service Center, Torrance, said to- day. Caldwell pointed out that if and when it becomes possible to file such claims they will be handled by the Federal govern- ment through official channels, and it will not be necessary for veterans or their dependents to pay anyone a fee for this service. The organization making the current 'solicitation asks a re- tainer of $10, plus 15 or 20 per- cent of any recoveries obtained from the Japanese government. A similar campaign was con- ducted by this organization last year. No arrangements have yet been made for processing of claims for maltreatment of prisoners by the Japanese, but any machinery which is estab- lished for this purpose undoubt- edly will provide for filing through official government channels, Caldwell said. Veterans who formerly were prisoners of war in Japan aVid dependents of those who died as prisoners, are again being soli­ cited by a Washington, D. 0. or­ ganization to file claims for com­ pensation on a fee basis, J. G. Caldwell, director, Veterans Service Center, Torrance, said to­ day.
