IN THE GOAL SQUMARCELLIN & COLLEGIANS CLING ON,XAVS STILL HOPING FOR A MIRACLE ,O.M.s & IVANHOE B GRADE BOUND,

BULLEEN-TEMP SHOW OUT,ALPHINGTON'S THIRD LOSS ,

C SECTION 4 SETTLED? F SECTIONWID E OPEN - ANZ AGAIN & M .H .S .O .B .

U.19s WIN FIRST GAME

Two highlights of round 14 of Amateur footballwere Melbou rne High School Old Boys U .19s firstwin and Thomastown reserves first loss . Other upsetsoccurred in B Section where Bulleen-Templestowetoppled Old Paradians and Kew inflicted a hat trickof defeats on Alph£ngton and in E Section wherePeninsula surprised by beating Balaclava .

With the fight for the four on in earnest, no moreis this apparent than in F Section . Three weeks agoOld Geelong seemed assured of the double chance .now they've dropped to sixth! La Trobe has beenthe steady improver and has quietly worked its wayup the ladder to second place and is, I am assurredby its rivals, the team to beat for F Section honors .After a mid-season slump, Commonwealth Bank hasregained form and with its good percentage is alikely finalist . Certainly plenty of anxious momentsawait the coaches, players and committees out atClayton, Brunswick, Footscray, Old Geelong andCommonwealth Bank .

The final four in E SEction is practically settled, although Peninsula & Old Trinity have coveted eyeson the double chance . However Thomastown aimingat premiership, promotion and championship honorsand Balaclava are unlikely to surrender first andsecond position .

No rth Brunswick is in the best seat in D Sectionas Old Ivanhoe has hit top form and is only a gamebehind . However Old Ivanhoe has a tough task as itplays the 3 leading teams in the run home, whilstNorth Brunswick has a relatively easier draw .

A dramatic loss of form has proven disastrous forSt . Kevin's and West Brunswick and they now havelittle to no chance of playing finals football thisyear . St. Kilda CBC whose hot and cold form hastypified their play, may, with a game in hand, featurein the finals but on form the current 4 lookimmovable .

Alphington finds itself in the hot seat and will notrelish today's trip to Coburg who are only a win offpossible relegation . If Alphington fail again . Uni .Blaeks will take over and once in could well stay .

There's bound to be some pretty desparatefootball in B Section during these remaining fourrounds especially as Monash, St . Bernard's . Coburg,Old Camberwell strive to avoid relegation .

De La Sall e saved Marcellin and Collegians whoseform of late has been wretched, when they showedtheir fighting qualities against North O .B . North areonly 4 points from the 4 and desparate for a chanceto defend their honor. Uni . Blues just sail calml-,preparing for the last round against De La and likelyrematch in the second semi . Ormond's improvementhas saved them from relegation, although Old Xavs .clinging to a desparate home . will provide somemore anxious moments for them, especially shouldIvanhoe provide an upset .

EitherMarcellin or Collegians will say goodbye tothe four after today and their clash highlights theround . They've won one game between them in thepast seven and have little hope of worrying the toptwo . Collegians at home should win, althoughMarcellin will welcome the return of Jons who ledAustralia with great distinction last Sunday andBernie Cooper .

To the support given the Australian Amateurs byour Victorian Club and the individual support tothose who hosted our visitors amateur football is inyour debt and is most appreciative .

100 GAMES AT ST . KILDA CBO CKen Graham plays his 100th game today against

Old Brighton and no doubt he'Il play well as he ishaving a very good season to date . Like it bottle offine wine . Ken gets better and more consistent withaage and is a valuable member of our Reserves teamcurrently lying second on the ladder . Fortunately .he doesn't play like he trains (couldn't resist it,Ken!) in fact his skills have earned him severalsenior games . Congratulations, Ken, from all playersand supporters at St . Kilda CBOC . and good lucktoday .

New coach Mark Loekie has the Blacks firing andwith Huntington in top form in front of goals, the V .A.F .A. Headquarters at Elsternwick ParkBlacks might just get the sniff of A Section! nearing completion- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Australian Amateurs after a slow and lifeles sstart made a final bid for victory against thec,,mbined Victorian Country but failed in its bid by4 points . The V .C .F .L . was the better side on theday but fine games from Mick Deveson (De LaSalle ) , John Jones ( Marcellin ), Nick Byrne (O .Xavs),Shane Murphy (De La Salle ) and Ch ri s Stone ( Caulf .Gram .) kept the "fussies" within reach .

The team lined up as follows :B . Browne ( V), Byrne ( V), Cousins (S .A . )H .B . Deveson ( V), Carroll ( V), Botten (S.A .)C . Stone ( V), Salmon (W .A .), Cronan (W.A .)H.F . Murphy ( V), Bennett ( V), Bra tton (SA .)F . McGrade ( W.A .), Jones ( V), Kenne tt (S .A . )R . Giles (S .A .), Sherwen ( V), Jennings (V)I'Change Coleman ( T), Cooper ( V), Bourke (V),

What of the future of A .A .F .C . matches?

Certainly it was a difficult and costly task to bringthe team together within one week. Amateurfootballer asks the reader are you in favour ofA .A .F .C . matches? I've no doubt all those whoplayed are, but some feedback from clubs andsupporters of amateur football may assist in futurepolicy making . Address your reply to the Editor .AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, P .O . J .L .'s 200 FOR OLD BRIGHTONJohn Levvey played his 200th game for Old

Brighton against St . Kilda CBOC. It was a typicalJ .L . game, dominated by his long bomb torpedoesand bruising body crushes . John began playing withthe Juniors in 1970 and won the Under 19 Best &Fairest the following year . 85 of his 200 games havebeen with the Senior side including being a memberof Brighton's first ever Senior Premiership in 1977,after having played in the 1972 side that lost the~_,rand final by a point . These days J .L .'s presence isa must before the Reserves take to the field . One ofthose unheralded behind the scenes workers, Johnand his wife Chris set up the canteen each week andJ .L . is always available for those hard to fill jobsaround the club . Congratulations John, your lifemembership is fully deserved .

150 GAMES UP FOR J.B .John Braumont, great favourite of West Brunswick,

today plays his 150th game . J .B . as he is known tohis team mates, can always draw comment wheneverhe plays in either first or reserves . He can kick goalsor give his team mates golden chances to post majorsin his own style . J .B . it has taken some time to reachyour target but all your mates and fellow playerswish you well today, and hope you kick a bag full .

MILESTONES AT OLD CAREY

Belated congratulations to Eric Dick on reachinghis 150 games and Rob Weir for his 50th . Eric hasbeen a major contributor to the club both on and offthe field . A long serving committeeman, he is a pastVice President and Social Secretary who, along with

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1983

his lovely wife Allison . has formed the backbone ofthe renowned Old Carey social scene for many years .Testimony of Eric's playing ability is the fact thatthis year, after another of his famous "MelbaFarewells" he pulled on the boots again to help outthe reserves, only to find that the "Old Magic" wasstill there to the extent that "Tricky" is once againplaying with the seniors - and providing plenty ofheadaches for opposition coaches .

Rob Weir has returned to the club after a twoyear break, and a welcome return it was too . A verytalented wingmanfhalf-forward, Rob had his prepa-ration interrupted with a couple of injuries . Whilstcurrently nursing a broken hand, we all look forwardto the return of the Robbv we all know to hisrightful place in the senior side . Well done Rob andEric . congratulations on your achievements fromeverybody at Old Carey .

100 GAMES AT KE WJohn Varney has played his 100th game with Kew .

Since joining Kew in 076. John has been a constantplayer although his work eommittments this yearhas forced him to play some games in Reserves . Asa great ball getter around the ground . John is knownfor his big grabs and consistency in front of goal . Hisknee injury in 1980 caused him to loose a season, but having fought back, he has maintained hisdetermination and agility whether it be in the ruckor roving in the forward area . Often amongst thebest players, John has been an inspiration and inparticular, a good clubman for in his off season, hecoached the Under 19s at short notice . John, don'tlet it stop at only 100!

BALL BRIEFS"SHAGGER" NOTCHES 100TH

Peter Morecroft plays his 100th game todayagainst St . Kevin's. `Shagger' is the youngest of threebrothers to play for the Rovers and is certainly thefastest . He began his playing days as a member ofthe 1977 U/19 premiership side and establishedhimself as an exciting creative player . He immediatelyfitted into the seniors as a dashing wingman wherehis explosive pace and sure ball handling has leftmany opponents in a daze . Shagger's exploits off thefield are often as incredible as those on it and he isextremely popular with our female supporters . Thecommittee, players and supporters of HamptonRovers extend hearty congratulations to Peter onreaching this milestone .

One of Old Haileyburians' "old stagers" Ross Bannon, created a club record, and one that would be hard to beat

played his 50th game in 14 years, first playing with th eclub in 1964 . The length of time between names is noindieatton of "Roscoe's" ability for he won the club's bestand fairest in 1967 .

With only 4 rounds to go, -A- Section was very open withthe bottom five teams all with a slim chance of reaching thefour.

North Old Boys ( Junior 1) and Old Melburnians (BReserve) remained the only undefeated teams in thecompetition .

"The Carnival Was Over" and no joy to Victoria as theywent down in the final game to S .A . by 22 points . Ourshockin~ inaccuracy, 7 .18, was the losing factor as thevictors ~icked 12 .10. On play, Victoria did not deserve tobe as close as that, but had they kicked straight in secondhalf, would have won it . 4 .13 in that per od, and many shotsout of bounds .

It was a great triumph for S .A .• the first time they had won two successive Carnivals .• the first time a South Australian player had won Best and
