County Clerk’s Office Poll Official Program Successful Recognizes County Employees for their work in the Primary Election

The Bernalillo County Clerk Employee Poll Official Program was launched this year for the 2014 Primary Election. The program proved to be effective in recruiting county employees to work as poll officials. Nearly thirty employees took a personal day off to participate. The County Clerk’s Office wishes to thank those involved in making the program possible, and in particular, the following county employees for participating as poll officials. The professionalism and hard work of county employees was invaluable and has set the foundation of the continued success of the program for elections to come.

The County Clerk reminds all Bernalillo County residents that if you are interested in serving as a poll official for the 2014 General Election and earning an extra $150, you can visit http://www.bernco.gov/clerk-poll-worker/ to learn more and apply.

Monsoon Season Lingers – Tips to Protect Your Home While we don’t normally receive much rain in Bernalillo County throughout most of the year, during the summer monsoon season heavy rain comes in very intense storms that can rapidly create excessive storm water. By taking a few simple precautions, you can hopefully prevent damage to your home and property. BernCo reminds you to remain on guard for the remainder of this year’s monsoon season. Here are a few common sense tips to keep in mind:

• Know your home’s risk. Is your home in a flood zone? Are you aware special mapping information is available from the county? Go to: www.bernco.gov/FloodZoneInfo

• Clear all debris from storm water flow paths.• Clean sediment from storm water ponds.• Stay informed of possible severe weather heading your way.• Never cross flowing arroyos while walking or driving a vehicle.• Experiencing flooding? Sandbags can be a quick method of slowing down the flow of

water. Sandbags are available at all Bernalillo County fire stations. You will need to fill and transport the bags yourself.

• Use rain barrels to collect rainwater for later use.

Answers To Your Zoning, Building & Planning Questions from Bernalillo County Planning & Development Services

What are impact fees and do I pay for them?

Bernalillo County has adopted an Impact Fee Ordinance. These fees are collected upon permit issuance for all new square foot additions for commercial structures, residences and mobile homes. These fees are invested back into our community for capacity improvements to roads, parks and fire protection.

First West Nile Virus-Infected Mosquitoes of 2014 Collected in Bernalillo CountyThe City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department and Bernalillo County’s Office of Health and Social Services announced on July 23, 2014 that the first West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes of 2014 were collected in through routine mosquito monitoring and were lab confirmed for West Nile virus.

The City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County operate a joint mosquito control program, aimed at reducing populations of mosquitoes that transmit West Nile virus and protecting public health. Residents throughout Bernalillo County are encouraged to report standing water or mosquito problems by calling 311. Also, many simple, common sense precautions can help reduce the risk of contracting West Nile virus.

“In light of increased rainfall over the past couple of weeks, and this recent detection of West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes, we are making every effort to let the public know how to avoid the risk of contracting the virus and how to help reduce mosquito populations around their homes,” said Dr. Paul Smith, manager of the Urban Biology Division of the City of Albuquerque’s Environmental Health Department. “Mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus will be around until there is a good hard frost in the area, so we urge people to continue to take precautions against mosquito bites throughout the rest of the season,” said Dr. Mark DiMenna, Deputy Director for the City’s Environmental Health Department. Common West Nile virus symptoms are fever, nausea, headache, and muscle aches. In rare cases, West Nile virus can cause meningitis or encephalitis. If someone has these symptoms, they should see their health care provider. People older than 60 years at most risk for serious disease from West Nile virus. Also, horse owners are strongly encouraged to vaccinate horses to protect them from West Nile virus and Western Equine Encephalitis, which is also carried by mosquitoes. Livestock water troughs should be flushed regularly to prevent mosquito breeding as well. Reduce the risk of contracting West Nile virus by minimizing exposure to mosquitoes:

• Use insect repellent on exposed skin and clothing when you go outdoors. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535 for use on skin, and permethrin for use on clothing. Always follow label directions when using insect repellents.

• Eliminate water-holding containers where mosquitoes lay their eggs, such as old tires, and regularly change the water in birdbaths, wading pools and pet water bowls. Make sure rain barrels are tightly screened.

• Keep windows and doors closed if not screened. If you leave your house doors or windows open, make sure they have screens that fit tightly and have no holes.

For more information about West Nile virus, go to the Environmental Health Department website at: http://www.cabq.gov/environmentalhealth/urban-biology/pest-management/mosquito-control/west-nile-virus.
