2012-13 Schedule

The 2012-13 season brings with it a new era in Bellarmine women’s basketball as Chancellor Dugan takes the helm of the program. A Louisville native, Dugan brings with her a championship mentality from previous stints at Great Lakes Valley Conference member Southern Indiana, where she led the Screaming Eagles to a NCAA Championship game appearance in 1996-97, and having won an Atlantic Sun Conference Championship at Division-I Florida Atlantic University.

In her first season, Dugan will have a team that returns six of its top seven scorers from last year’s squad that ranked second in the GLVC in scoring offense. Loaded with veteran talent, the roster features five seniors and four juniors to go along with some talented underclassmen.

At the forefront of the senior class is a pair of fifth year players in guard Kylie Brady and forward Lauren Jones. Brady has started 57 games in her career and earned First Team All-GLVC East honors last year while Jones looks to get to get back into form after a redshirt season, but was a prolific scorer in 2010-11, averaging 17.6 ppg.

Dugan will have several options to pair with Brady in the backcourt as Betsy Goodin, Kylee Hamilton, and Rachel Greenwell all return with valuable experience. The backcourt depth will also be bolstered by the return of junior Chelsea Hawkins after sitting out last season with a redshirt. The 5-5 guard started 14 games in 2010-11, her first at BU, averaging 5.5 points including a 20-point performance against Texas-Permian Basin.

On the wing, multi-threat junior Therese Montano returns after starting 39 games in her first two seasons. The 5-9 forward averaged 11.0 points in 2011-12 while seeing time at the 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Jones is another versatile player that has the ability to play both inside and out on the perimeter where she hit 43.8% of her shots from beyond the arc. After a stellar freshman campaign averaging 7.7 pts and 6.5 rebs., Darion Hutchinson, one of the top freshmen in the GLVC a year ago, will also vie for playing time at multiple positions.

Down low, senior Allison Osen will look to capitalize on a breakout junior campaign that saw the Greenwood, Ind. native start every game while ranking third in the

conference in both field goal percentage and blocked shots. Dugan will have the luxury of complimenting Osen’s traditional center skills with backup Kelsey Lamb’s athleticism and high energy. Playing sparingly in 2011-12, Lamb showed great potential, including a 9-point, 10-rebound performance against Drury in just 21 minutes of action. Sophomore Morgan Clemons is also expected to increase her role and will see action in the post.

Dugan will also count on the veteran leadership to bring along four freshmen that includes two more versatile athletes in 6-0 forward Mary Dye of Prospect, Ky. and 5-11 wing Sarah Galvin from Hendersonville, Tenn. Dye finished her prep career as South Oldham’s all-time leading rebounder while Galvin put up big scoring numbers, including a 47-point performance against Father Ryan Academy.

Bellarmine will play a 29 game schedule in 2012-13 with 17 of them being at home in Knights Hall. To prepare for what is expected to be a tough road back to the NCAA Tournament, the Knights will play two exhibitions against Div.-I opponents. After taking on Indiana State on Nov. 2, Bellarmine will take on SEC powerhouse Kentucky on Nov. 5. The pre-conference slate for the Knights features three events including the season opening United Electric Tip-Off Classic that features Kentucky State, Ferris State, and Cedarville. The highlight of the early season will be a six day trip to Puerto Rico in mid-December to play three games in San Juan.

A new calendar year brings Great Lakes Valley Conference play to Knights Hall as the team will open up the 18-game conference portion of the schedule on Jan. 3 by welcoming in Quincy. Notable home GLVC contests include Kentucky Wesleyan (Feb. 2), Southern Indiana (Feb. 21), and the regular season finale against McKendree (Feb. 28).

Dugan also knows life on the road is never easy as key road contests for the Knights are at Southern Indiana (Jan. 31), where Dugan coached for eight seasons, at Kentucky Wesleyan (Feb. 23), and at defending GLVC Champion Wisconsin-Parkside (Feb. 16).

Shannon Litton enters into her first season on the Bellarmine bench, but 18th with Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. Litton has been by Dugan’s side since their days at Southern Indiana which continued at Florida Atlantic. The duo has had success in both stops, leading USI to a 30-2 season in 1996-97 that include a national

runner-up finish and guided Florida Atlantic to the 2005-06 Atlantic Sun Championship. Originally from Maysville, Ky., Litton played collegiately at Morehead State, graduating in 1993 with a degree in physical education and health. After graduating from MSU she was the head JV and assistant varsity coach at Monroe County and Fleming County before joining Dugan at USI. She has been inducted into the KHSAA 10th Region and the USI Hall of Fame.

After a heralded career collegiately and professionally, Crystal Kelly enters into her first season as an assistant coach for the Bellarmine University women’s basketball program. Regarded as one of the top prep athletes to ever come out of the city of Louisville, Kelly was a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in Kentucky and led Sacred Heart Academy to three consecutive

Sweet 16 Titles from 2001-2004, being named Miss Basketball in Kentucky as a senior . Kelly moved on to play collegiately at Western Kentucky, again having a career with filled with honors and accomplishments. She would finish her four-year career as the program’s all-time leader in scoring and rebounding. In her final year in Bowling Green, Ky., Kelly was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year while leading the nation in field goal percentage at 64.8%. After her illustrious career at WKU, Kelly was drafted in the third round, 31st overall, of the 2008 WNBA Draft by the Houston Comets. In three seasons in the league she averaged 4.8 points and 2.4 rebounds while also playing overseas during the offseason.

On June 22, 2012, Chancellor Dugan became the sixth head coach in Bellarmine University’s women’s basketball history. Dugan takes over a Bellarmine basketball program that has made 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament since 1986, and has captured four regional championships.

Dugan, a Sacred Heart Academy graduate, spent 13 seasons as head coach at Division I Florida Atlantic University before taking the helm at Bellarmine. At FAU, she led the Owls to their respective conference postseason tournament each year. In 2005-06, FAU captured the Atlantic Sun Championship and earned the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to her stint at FAU, Dugan was head coach at Great Lakes Valley Conference rival University of Southern Indiana, where she coached the Screaming Eagles to four NCAA

Tournament appearances in eight seasons from 1991-99 including an appearance in the 1997 NCAA Division II National Championship. In 1997-98, Dugan picked up GLVC Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season, leading USI to the another regular season title and capturing the inaugural GLVC Tournament at Roberts Stadium in Evansville, Ind. Dugan has compiled a career record of 320-290 (.525) in 21 seasons, and her players have accumulated a combined eight first team all-conference (GLVC, TAAC/Atlantic Sun, Sun Belt) selections, nine second team, 13 third team/honorable mention, two all-conference freshman team honors, four conference players of the year, one defensive player of the year, and one freshman of the year awards. A four-year letter winner for Eastern Kentucky University (1978-82), Dugan was a three-year starter and finished her junior and senior seasons as the Lady Colonels’ leading rebounder and second-leading scorer. She earned a bachelor of science in physical education from EKU and a master of arts in physical education from Morehead State University.

Bellarmine University 17

The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972

when the athletic directors of three member schools - Kentucky

Wesleyan, Bellarmine and Indiana State University at Evansville (now

the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions

about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University

of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On

July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united

to become the GLVC.

Since its inception, 16 different institutions have joined the

league. Those members include: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-

Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985),

Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994), Southern

Illinois University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-

Parkside (1994), University of Missouri-St. Louis (1995), Drury University

(2005), Missouri S&T (2005), Rockhurst University (2005), University

of Illinois-Springfield (2008), Maryville University (2008), William

Jewell College (2009) and McKendree University (2010). On June 8,

2012, Truman State University was admitted to the conference and

will begin competing in the GLVC in the fall of 2013.

Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994

season, IPFW left the league following the 2000-01 academic year, and

SIU Edwardsville exited the league following the 2007-08 academic

year. These departures opened the door for the seven-team expansion

over the past decade, allowing the league to grow 17 institutions.

Northern Kentucky departed following the 2011-12 season to bring

the current membership number to 16 schools.

The conference headquarters are located in downtown India-

napolis, one of the many major Midwest media markets in which the

league maintains a presence. The GLVC has schools in Milwaukee/

Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (In-

dianapolis), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana),

Springfield, Ill. (Illinois Springfield), Springfield, Mo. (Drury), Owens-

boro (Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas City (Rockhurst, William Jewell)

and St. Louis (Maryville, McKendree, Missouri-St. Louis).

The conference sponsors 18 championships in baseball, bas-

ketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor

track and field, and tennis for men and basketball, cross country,

softball, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, golf,

and volleyball for women.

GLVC institutions have won 12 national championships in

basketball, including Bellarmine’s national title in 2011. Kentucky

Wesleyan leads all Division II institutions with eight men’s basket-

ball titles, while Southern Indiana won the men’s crown in 1995.

Northern Kentucky won the school’s first-ever women’s basketball

national championship in 2000 and followed that with a national

title in 2008. In addition, Northern Kentucky became the first GLVC

member to win a national championship in men’s soccer, while USI

staked claim to the GLVC’s first baseball national championship in

2010. SIU Edwardsville was the first GLVC member to win a national

championship in softball in 2007.

The league also takes pride in recognizing the many academic

and athletic accomplishments achieved by its student-athletes,

coaches and administrators. In 2001, the league announced the

creation of the GLVC Hall of Fame, with the first class being inducted

in 2002. The GLVC annually presents the Richard F. Scharf Paragon

Award to the top male and female student-athlete in the league,

and the Dr. Charles Bertram Alumni Award of Distinction to alumni

who both succeeded while a GLVC student-athlete and excelled in

accomplishments after graduation.

OWSLEy B. FRAzIER STAdIuMIn the fall of 2007, Bellarmine dedicated the $5.1 million Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on the school’s campus, just off of Newburg Road. This state-of-the-art facility is now the home of Bellarmine’s soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, and track teams. The artificial field surface, called the Joseph P. and Janet A. Clayton Field, was installed by the Motz Group and is the same “24/7” product as can be found at the football fields used by the Miami Dolphins and the University of Kentucky.

The track facilities include an eight-lane dual-durometer polyurethane poured surface provided by Benyon Sport Surfaces, as well as three long jump pits, two pole vault areas, a high jump pit, and a water steeplechase pit. The field can also be fully lit for night play. It seats approximately 2,000 spectators and has a concession stand and press box facility.

Owsley B. Frazier Stadium has hosted three NCAA Division II National Championships: men’s and women’s soccer (2010) and women’s la-crosse (2012).

kNIghTS hALLKnights Hall is home to Bellarmine basketball and volleyball. Built in 1960, Knights Hall has an atmosphere all its own and can seat up to 2,222 passionate Knight fans in its current configuration.

While “retro” in appearance, Knights Hall has plenty of modern ameni-ties. A new floor and lower arena seating were installed in the summer of 2012. At the same time, new electrical and data lines were installed to accommodate media at press row. Other amenities include the President’s room, which overlooks the court from the east baseline, and new LED scorer’s table, which can display scores, statistics and sponsors’ mesages. Knights Hall also has a closed-circuit video system allowing live broadcasts of events to monitors throughout the arena.

Knights Hall was dedicated in 1960 with a home game against the Uni-versity of Louisville and has since featured some great matchups with some of the best basketball players in collegiate basketball including Kentucky State legend Travis Grant, the all-time leading scorer in Divi-sion II. The arena also has hosted NCAA tournament games including women’s games in the 1990s all they up to the men’s basketball team’s NCAA Midwest Regional championships in 2011 and 2012.

In addition to basketball, Knights Hall has hosted literally hundreds of other events including graduations, lectures and concerts. It also was the site of the Division II Women’s Volleyball “Elite 8” in 2010. Other guests of Knights Hall include Mother Teresa, the Grateful Dead, Jimmy Buffett, and Maroon 5 among others. In 2007, Knights Hall was featured on ESPN as it hosted the McDonald’s High School All-American Slam Dunk Contest, which was won by Blake Griffin.

kNIghTS FIELdBellarmine’s baseball and softball teams each have a home at Knights Field. Both diamonds are natural grass and are located on campus. The baseball field was built in 1954 and has been renovated several times. It now features an elevated press box overlooking home plate as well as covered dugouts, bullpens, a batting cage and a large electronic scoreboard in right field. The field dimensions are 360 feet down the left field line (where the fence is now 20-feet hight), 385 feet to dead center, and 340 feet down the right-field line.

The softball field had a complete renovation in the spring of 2012 and was the site of the NCAA DII Softball National Championship that same year. The faciltity has a full service concession stand located behind home plate as well as covered dugouts and an electronic scoreboard located in left field. The field dimensions are 190 feet down the foul lines and 220 feet to center. Both fields have bleacher seating to ac-commodate 300 spectators as well as ample hillside grass seating.

EddIE WEBER TENNIS COMPLExHome to the men’s and women’s tennis teams, the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex features six hard surface courts, which were re-cently converted from clay. The Knights tennis teams also practice and compete on three indoor courts within the adjacent Sports, Recreation and Fitness facility.

ATHlETIC FACIlITIES

Bellarmine University is a vibrant community of educational excellence and ethical awareness that consistently ranks among the nation’s best colleges and universities. Our students pursue an education based in the liberal arts – and in the distinguished, inclusive Catholic tradition of educational excellence, the oldest and most rewarding in the western world. It is a lifelong education, worthy of the university’s namesake, Saint Robert Bellarmine, and of his invitation to each of us to learn and live in veritatis amore -- in the love of all that is beautiful, true and good in life.

On the edge of downtown Louisville - the nation’s 19th largest city - Bellarmine is set on three beautiful hills in the artful and eclectic Highlands neighborhood. We are within walking distance of the Bardstown Road corridor, where coffee houses, restaurants, and one-of-a-kind shops add to the overall Bellarmine experience. Down-town Louisville is just minutes away and offers world-class theater, arts, sports, museums and gorgeous riverfront parks. Louisville is situated on the mile-wide Ohio River, at the gateway to the South and the crossroads of the Midwest. Two hundred million people – two-thirds of the nation’s population – live within a 500-mile radius of the city.

Bellarmine is growing rapidly, not only with great new campus amenities and academic programs, but also in regional and national prominence. As we grow, more and more people are adding “Bellarmine” to their lists of top schools. Around here, we say “BELL-er-mun” in “LOU-a-vuhl.” This is one of the friendliest campuses and places in the world, so we’ll still love you no matter how you pronounce these names. BU is named after Roberto Bellarmino (1542-1621), the brilliant Jesuit, who was a Cardinal and who was canonized in 1930.
