ABOUT CLERKENWELL/FARRINGDON
Traversing the worlds of commerce and creativity with ease, Clerkenwell seems to attract the best of both. Modern office blocks jostle with Dickensian-era streets and a wealth of amazing restaurants, cafes, bars and boutiques cater to the dense concentration of architecture and design businesses around here. Once at the forefront of all things trendy (although East London may be taking that crown), if you want to know where the ubiquitous industrial-chic aesthetic of converted warehouses, exposed brick and bare-bulb lighting has come from, Clerkenwell is a great place to start.
Urban Walkabout is proud to support talented, contemporary illustrators on the cover of our city guide publications. This cover is the fifth in the London series and features commissioned artwork by artist Amy Blue. See more of her work atamyblue.squarespace.com

GO ON A HISTORIC TOUR Take a trip down memory lane as you wander the historic streets that Dickens once frequented. The two-mile Clerkenwell Historic Trail is one of the best walks in the borough.
DINE AT A GASTROPUB In the area that produced what is widely credited as the world’s first gastropub – The Eagle – Clerkenwell’s foodie reputation extends beyond its restaurants.
VISIT THE MARKETS Don’t miss lunchtimes on Leather Lane and Exmouth Market. Firm favourites with hungry office workers, you’ll find stallholders dishing out tasty street food that caters to all tastes.
DIP INTO DESIGN See Clerkenwell’s design heritage up close as festivals and open studios take place throughout the year. The biggest, Clerkenwell Design week, rolls into town in May each year.
TRY A SMITHFIELDS PUB BREAKFAST Have breakfast alongside workers coming off their shift from Smithfields market – some pubs have special dispensation to sell breakfast and booze from 7am.
