Batavia Highlights

News From the Principal’s Office JULY 2017

Summer Greetings from BHS! I hope all of you have been enjoying a relaxing and fun-filled summer. The summer months serve to recharge our

batteries as we gear up for another exciting and productive school year. I’d like to extend a special welcome to the

Class of 2021 as our new Freshmen transition to the High School.

During the summer months, BHS reflects on the previous year’s achievements and says farewell and good luck to

our recent graduates. Here are a few BHS snapshots and points of pride from the 2016-2017 School Year:

2017 BHS Graduation rate of 95%

72% of the Class of 2017 will pursue higher education at either a 2 year or 4 year college

11 members of the Class of 2017 have entered military service

Members of the Class of 2017 will be attending RIT, SUNY Geneseo, the Air Force Academy, SUNY

Fredonia, Canisius College, Brigham Young University, U of R, University of Buffalo, and GCC.

Popular and successful BHS Events including the Art Show, Mr. Batavia, the musical Hairspray, and our

BHS Concert series

Continued reduction in the number of discipline referrals and suspensions while increased number of

student participation in extra-curricular clubs including Science Olympiad, Board Game Club, Z-Club,

Production Club, Winter Guard, Math Team and Mock Trial

There are tons of opportunities for every student at BHS to make positive connections and our staff is interested in

helping kids find their nitch. Research and experience shows that kids who make positive connections at school

through music, art, athletics and clubs become stronger students, practice respect and responsibility through

teamwork, collaboration and participation. As families begin to think about September, I encourage you to discuss

the upcoming year, plan ahead and set tentative goals for joining one of the great opportunities BHS has to offer.

Lastly, the BHS newsletter is released 5 times during the year and is a key communication tool. Keep it on hand

as you will find important school protocols, calendars, events, announcements and updates.

New School Counselor at

BHS

Stop By The Counseling Center To Meet Mr. Greg Ciszak

My name is Greg Ciszak and I am a new School Counselor at Batavia High School for students with last names starting with A-C & T-Z. I will be taking over for Mr. Walkowski, who retired in June. Although

I will be new to Batavia High School, I have been a School Counselor in the Batavia City School District for the past 7 years at John Kennedy Intermediate school. I am looking forward to working the students, their families, and the dedicated staff at Batavia High School.

I'm excited to be starting at Batavia teaching English 11. Before coming to Batavia, I taught for nine years at Victor Sr. High, teaching English 11 and Journalism. I live in Batavia with my husband and our black lab Bella, and am looking forward to being a part of the Blue Devil community.

REMINDER FROM THE BHS ATTENDANCE 0FFICE

All absent, early release, and tardy

students require a hand written

note from parent/guardian. Notes

must be submitted to the

Attendance Office within 5 days.

When reporting an absence or to

have a student released early, call

the Attendance Office 343-2480

ext. 2007. Please leave your name,

the name of the student and a phone

number where you can be contacted.

BHS IS A CLOSED CAMPUS…

MEANING, STUDENTS ARE

NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE

CAMPUS FOR LUNCH AND

THEN RETURN.

STUDENTS ARE NOT

ALLOWED TO GO TO

CARS/STUDENT PARKING

LOT DURING SCHOOL

HOURS. 8:05-2:43

Please advise students to submit all notes to the Attendance

Office first thing in the morning, especially if the student

has an appointment to leave during the day. This will avoid

classroom interruptions.

It is important to understand that “last minute or immediate

releases” may prove to be difficult to get messages to

students. Please plan accordingly and allow us time to get

messages to students. This will help alleviate delays with

appointments and to avoid classroom interruptions.

ALL PM

GVEP STUDENTS

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED

BACK IN THE BUILDING

UNTIL 2:45. FAILURE TO

FOLLOW THIS RULE

WILL RESULT IN A

REFERRAL AND A FOLLOW

UP VISIT WITH THE

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER, STUDENTS THAT ARE 18 YEARS OF AGE, CAN NOT SIGN THEMSELVES IN OR OUT OF SCHOOL. THIS IS A DISTRICT POLICY. ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A HAND WRITTEN NOTE FROM PARENT/GUARDIAN.

***ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES*** The compulsory education law in New York State requires

that each child over the age of 6 and under the age of 16 are

required to be in attendance full time during the time that

school is in session. PARENTS SHOULD UNDERSTAND

THAT EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY APPROVE OF A

STUDENT’S ABSENCE AND HAVE NOTIFIED THE

SCHOOL, BY NEW YORK STATE LAW AND

BATAVIA CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT’S BOARD OF

EDUCATION POLICY, SOME ABSENCES MAY STILL

BE CONSIDERED ILLEGAL.

We ask that parents notify the Attendance Office by calling

343-2480 ext. 2007 to report a student’s absence. If a call is

not received, the School Messenger will call the parent/

guardian. The student is required to submit a hand written

note from the parent/guardian within 5 days of the absence.

This may include a doctor’s note if necessary. The note should

include: the student’s name, the date of the absence, the reason

for the absence, and the signature and phone number of the

parent/guardian. Notes that neglect this information will not

honored. Failure to provide a note may result in disciplinary

action and will be considered truant or unexcused.
