    1. What do modern sailors need when they travel on the sea?

    2. How did Polynesian sailors find their way in the past?

    / 4

Today, no sailor sets off on a trip at sea without maps and a

    1. . But long before Europeans began to explore the

worlds oceans, Polynesian sailors had successfully landed

on every island in the Pacific, without any such instruments.

In New Zealands North Island, people are bringing back the

    2. Polynesian science of way-finding. Its a method of

navigation that uses the stars, the sun, and ocean movement

to sail across the vast waters of the Pacific.

Some teachers at the University of Waikato, near Auckland,

are passing the knowledge of way-finding on to the younger

    generation.

As with any navigation technique, the most 3. piece of

equipment you need is a compass. But these young people

are learning to find a location in the ancient way, which uses

the stars rather than the Earths magnetic field for navigation.

This is how it works: before night ends, the navigator finds his

position from the stars. Then he memorises the way the canoe

moves as it travels over the ocean towards his 4. . That

is because during the day the sun moves, so you cant use it

to find your way. All you can rely on is the ocean movement.

So, the navigator keeps the canoe travelling in the same ocean

movement and stays on course until the stars come out again.

Clothes Shopping Conversations1. Tina: I really like this nice pair of trousers I saw at a trendy clothes shop in the

mall. They cost 200. Thats almost a weeks pay, but I like them a lot. Do you think I should buy them with my new credit card?

    2. Kelly: Hey, look at this great suit! It comes in medium; thats your size. Theres a jacket, trousers and even a belt. It would look fantastic on you. Its 300, but I think its worth it. Why dont you buy it?

    Bill: I dont think so.

    3. Kate: Look at this dress. Its made of expensive material and its a pretty colour.

Its just my size, which is sometimes hard to find. And look! Its on sale for only 20. Im going to buy it!

    Anna: You should.

    4. Rita: Hmm. I dont know what to do. I think my mum would like this dress. Its

yellow and thats her favourite colour. It comes in an extra large and I know

thats her size. The only problem is I havent got much cash this month. What

do you think I should do?

    3. What is Do Something dedicated to doing?

    4. Who did Leonardo work with on the film Blood Diamond?

    / 1

Theres nothing like having your own charity to work for, but Leonardo DiCaprio supports much more than his

own non-profit foundation. For example, he worked with orphans while on the set of his movie Blood Diamond.

Leonardo DiCaprio has contributed a lot to environmental

charities. He even encouraged other celebrities to arrive

at the 2007 Oscars in green vehicles. Leonardo has also

made a documentary on global warming called The 11th

    Hour.

As a dedicated environmentalist, DiCaprio has received congratulations from various environmental groups for

his good deeds. In the past, he has chosen to travel on commercial flights instead of using a private plane. It is

also reported that he drives a green car and has a house

that does not pollute the environment. In an interview

about his 2007 film, 11th Hour, DiCaprio said that global warming was the number-one environmental problem.

The list of Leonardos activities for

    charity goes on.

In 2010, he earned an award for his environmental work from Do

Something, an organization that is dedicated to helping people who do good and inspiring

young people to follow their example.

In 1998, DiCaprio and his mother gave $35,000 for a modern Leonardo DiCaprio Computer Center at the Los Feliz Library

in Los Angeles, close to Leonardos childhood home. It was rebuilt after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and opened again in early 1999.

While filming Blood Diamond in 2005, DiCaprio worked with 24 orphaned children from Maputo, Mozambique.

Most recently, in 2010, he donated $1,000,000 to rescue efforts in Haiti after the earthquake.

    a. She doesnt have time to dress up.

    b. She cant cook very well.

    c. Her children dont like vegetables.

    2. What did Jamie suggest Poppy could do?

    a. cook nothing but pizzas, sauces and soups

    b. hide vegetables in sauce

    c. equip her kitchen with a blender

    3. What does Jamie want to do in primary schools?

    a. introduce vegetable gardens

    b. teach the children to cook

    c. organize shopping trips

    4. How can mums set their kids a good example?

    a. by being open minded

    b. by cooking tasty meals

    c. by eating food they dont like

Poppy: I find it really hard to get my kids to eat their green

vegetables. I am constantly experimenting with new ways to

dress them up and make them look tastier. Whats the best way

you have found to solve this problem?

Jamie: Actually, there are two ways of dealing with this. Firstly,

when I had to cook for 1,700 school kids who didnt want to

eat vegetables, I used to make a 13-veg tomato sauce that

went in their pizzas, sauces and soups, and they ate it all up

even though they said they hated what Id hidden. You could

try this approach at home as well. Use a blender to mix all the

vegetables into the sauce so your kids wont know its there.

Well, it works, but hiding vegetables is a short-term solution as

it doesnt let kids have a chance to make their own personal

    choice about eating vegetables.

    Now, heres something worth thinking

about; all the children I have ever met

or worked with have tried a vegetable

if they have grown or picked it

themselves. So, the next thing I want

to do is start vegetable gardens in

primary schools. If they see vegetables, and are involved in

them, kids will try them. Involving kids is something to do in the

supermarket as well. Allow kids to smell and touch.

They might not like vegetables now but dont worry, thats

nothing weird. Getting them to try something is a great first

step. The best thing a mum can do is to practise being open

minded; always try something even if you end up not liking it.

This way, youll be setting a good example to your kids about

trying new things before deciding whether they are tasty or not.

Sibrees lemur was thought to be extinct. Scientists

recently rediscovered the creature in Madagascar.

Scientists exploring the wildlife of Madagascar, an island-nation off the east coast of Africa, had a wonderful surprise recently. They announced that Sibrees lemur

(lee-mer), which was thought to be extinct, was alive and well. This lemur, a type of mammal, and a relative of the chimpanzee, is only found in Madagascar and some nearby islands.

The discovery didnt happen overnight but took some

time to be revealed. A few years ago, Mitchell Irwin, a scientist from McGill University, in Montreal, Canada, was exploring animal habitats in Madagascar. While

A rare mammal has been found 100 years after

people thought the species had died out.he and his team were walking

    around the islands remoter

regions, they came upon some tiny lemurs that looked a little bit

    different from other small lemurs

they had seen. Irwin caught two

of them and tested their DNA.

The tests have shown that the lemurs are an indigenous species

that were thought to have died out 100 years ago, when the animals forest home was cut down to make way for development.

If the discovery of Sibrees lemur hadnt been made, this species would probably have become extinct in the near future, Irwin reported. Protecting its only known population and finding out

how many individuals are left are now our main goals, especially since much of this regions forests have already been destroyed.

Welcome to the London Block Parent ProgrammeBuilding safer communities One block at a time

Recent London Block Parent Incidents Reported:

OUR MISSION is to provide a system of safe places for people to go when they need to.

OUR VISION is to make London a safer community to live, work and play in.

OUR GOAL is to have more than one Block Parent home on every block!

The characteristic Block Parent sign in the window of a home tells children, pensioners and anyone who needs it that help is nearby if they are lost, frightened, or in trouble. Block Parents also offer community education programmes to increase the personal safety of children, teens and the elderly.

West London - A 10-year-old child was playing in the street

when she fell and hurt herself. She went to a Block Parent

and was given basic first aid for cut knees and hands. The

neighbourhood children know that this Block Parent is a

nurse and is always available if her sign is in the window.

The parents of the child were informed of the incident.

South London - Some teenagers from out of town were visiting

relatives in the area. They had been skateboarding, but it was beginning to get dark and they had no idea where they were. As

soon as they saw the Block Parent sign displayed in a house window, they came to the door. The Block Parents were able to contact the

people they were visiting, who came and picked them up.
