Today, no sailor sets off on a trip at sea without maps and a

on every island in the Pacific, without any such instruments.

In New Zealands North Island, people are bringing back the

navigation that uses the stars, the sun, and ocean movement

to sail across the vast waters of the Pacific.

Some teachers at the University of Waikato, near Auckland,

are passing the knowledge of way-finding on to the younger

generation.

equipment you need is a compass. But these young people

are learning to find a location in the ancient way, which uses

the stars rather than the Earths magnetic field for navigation.

This is how it works: before night ends, the navigator finds his

position from the stars. Then he memorises the way the canoe

Poppy: I find it really hard to get my kids to eat their green

vegetables. I am constantly experimenting with new ways to

dress them up and make them look tastier. Whats the best way

you have found to solve this problem?

Jamie: Actually, there are two ways of dealing with this. Firstly,

when I had to cook for 1,700 school kids who didnt want to

eat vegetables, I used to make a 13-veg tomato sauce that

went in their pizzas, sauces and soups, and they ate it all up

even though they said they hated what Id hidden. You could

try this approach at home as well. Use a blender to mix all the

vegetables into the sauce so your kids wont know its there.

Well, it works, but hiding vegetables is a short-term solution as

it doesnt let kids have a chance to make their own personal

choice about eating vegetables.

Now, heres something worth thinking

about; all the children I have ever met

or worked with have tried a vegetable

if they have grown or picked it

themselves. So, the next thing I want

to do is start vegetable gardens in

primary schools. If they see vegetables, and are involved in

them, kids will try them. Involving kids is something to do in the

supermarket as well. Allow kids to smell and touch.

They might not like vegetables now but dont worry, thats

nothing weird. Getting them to try something is a great first

step. The best thing a mum can do is to practise being open

minded; always try something even if you end up not liking it.

This way, youll be setting a good example to your kids about

trying new things before deciding whether they are tasty or not.

Sibrees lemur was thought to be extinct. Scientists

recently rediscovered the creature in Madagascar.

Scientists exploring the wildlife of Madagascar, an island-nation off the east coast of Africa, had a wonderful surprise recently. They announced that Sibrees lemur

(lee-mer), which was thought to be extinct, was alive and well. This lemur, a type of mammal, and a relative of the chimpanzee, is only found in Madagascar and some nearby islands.

The discovery didnt happen overnight but took some

time to be revealed. A few years ago, Mitchell Irwin, a scientist from McGill University, in Montreal, Canada, was exploring animal habitats in Madagascar. While

1. On 25th October, Laura and I

headed for Goa, in southern India, to

explore the beaches. After spending

the first day relaxing, we were

reunited with our college friends,

Annie and Joan, who had set off

together with us from the UK.

bus to Palolem, Goas most beautiful

beach. On the way, our bus driver

accelerated too much and an old

lady fell over. Thank goodness, her son managed to catch

3. We arrived at Palolem Beach in amazing weather, so

we did the natural thing and bathed in the clear blue sea all

Michael, a really nice guy from

Manchester! He was a travel writer

we had met when we first arrived

in India. What a small world!!

4. I had a truly amazing time

in south Goa, mostly due to the

fantastic company I shared for the

next 8 days. We hired bikes and a

group of us travelled to a secret beach. Believe it or not, we

were the only people there!

5. We stayed an extra day to go to a sunset boat party.

Then, once again, the sad goodbyes had to be said. I wish I

hadnt had to say goodbye to Michael, who was at the top of

my Favourite Traveller list. And that was southern India. If

only I didnt have to fly home tomorrow!

Recent London Block Parent Incidents Reported:

OUR MISSION is to provide a system of safe places for people to go when they need to.

OUR VISION is to make London a safer community to live, work and play in.

The characteristic Block Parent sign in the window of a home tells children, pensioners and anyone who needs it that help is nearby if they are lost, frightened, or in trouble.
