The Occupational & Environmental Health Unit

(KPAS) is one of the units under PKD Gombak.

Aim-to ensure the well being of the workers and

the place of work.

Services-medical surveillance for workers

exposed to hazards at the workplace ie health

care workers ,police personnel, fire fighters.

Research shows...

Statistics from Cawangan Kebajikan PDRM Malaysia

-111 PDRM personnel aged 40-55 died of CVD Jan-Dis 2010

(Berita Harian 20 April 2011)

Study among KL traffic point personnel

Results of audiometric tests revealed that out of 30 who were tested, 24 or 80% were positive for noise-induced hearing loss.

(Thomas N 2004 )

Noise Induced Hearing Loss-Hearing loss resulting from

exposure to excessive loud noise

Occupational NIHL:

Hearing loss resulting from exposure to excessive

loud noise at the workplace

(FMA 1967)

◦ BMI greater than or equal to 25 is overweight

◦ a BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obesity.

( WHO MARCH 2011)

high total cholestrol- TC >5.17mmol/l

high blood sugar, Venous Plasma Glucose-≥

7.0 mmol/L

(CPG on Management of (T2DM).MAY 2009)

high bp-Hypertension is defined as persistent

elevation of systolic BP of140 mmHg or greater

and/or diastolic BP of 90 mmHg or greater.

(CPG On Hypertension, 2008)

Impact of unhealthy police force with NIHL

loss in productivity

safety hazard(accident or fatality)-mask

important sounds ,disrupt communication

threatens security of country

General Objective

To assess the health status of the police personnel.

To create awareness regarding noise induced hearing loss and the importance of

a healthy lifestyle.

Specific Objectives To investigate the percentage of hearing loss,

overweight, obesity, high blood cholesterol, smokers and high blood sugar levels.

To suggest preventive measures to reduce the incidence of noise induced hearing loss.

METHODOLOGY

CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY

MAY 2010 JUNE 2010

KLINIK KESIHATAN TAMAN EHSAN

( OCCUPATIONAL & ENVIROMENTAL HEALTH UNIT)

Statistical Analysis- SPSS version 13.0

RESULTS

Discussion

Prevalence of noise induced hearing loss among police

personnel 75 from 85(85.9%).

Study among KL traffic point personnel

Results of audiometric tests revealed that out of 30 who were tested, 24 or 80% were positive for noise induced hearing loss.

(Thomas N et al 2004)

Because….

policemen are frequently exposed to noise from traffic & gunshots

(V K Singh & A K Mehta 1995)

A gunshot releases noise of 140-170 dB.Dangerous

level 130 dB

(wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunshot)

Traffic noise levels 75 dBA to 85 dBA. The maximum

sound level recorded was 108.2 dBA. Noise emitted by

traffic equipment and vehicles were up to 133 dBA

(Thomas N et al 2004)

Loud noise damages the hair cells in the inner ear and

can cause hearing loss, ear ringing and distortion of

sounds.( Franks JR, Stephenson MR, Merry CJ. 2004)

Police higher risk CVD because risk factors

111 PDRM personnel aged 40-55 died of CVD Jan-Dis 2010

4 main risk factors unhealthy eating habits, stres, sedentary lifestyle, smoking

(Berita Harian 20 April 2011)

The Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 states that it is compulsory for an employer to ensure that the worker works in a safe and healthy enviroment

needs to be given proper trainning regarding the hazards they are faced with while carrying out their work.

Much can be done to prevent noise-induced hearing loss but little can be done to reverse it

Risks need to be controlled through engineering

control, administrative control and as a last

resort personel protective equipment.

Periodic medical surveillance must to be carried

out for police personnel since their work

exposes them to high risks.

A healthy lifestyle, a well balanced diet, exercise

and saying no to smoking must be the way of

life.
