ARCHITECTURE ZA: LIVE DESIGN, TRANSFORM LIFE Celebrate design with SAIA and World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 at the V&A Waterfront! What does the mantle ‘World Design Capital’ mean for architects and the built environment in Cape Town, South Africa and the region? SAIA answers this question at ArchitecureZA, 19-20 November 2013, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. As the design spotlight is turned upon us, how do we respond? At first we look around us nervously wondering what will the world make of us! So much of our en- vironment was not formally designed, and a fair percentage was badly designed. We can’t redesign our city/s in the next 12 months! We can celebrate the excel- lent work however, and in the process create a vision of the built environment we desire, one which we could hold up to the world with pride and say look: this is our architecture, our unique heritage, our auspicious present, and our bright future. World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 is an opportunity for architectural expres- sion, at the smallest and largest scale and every scale in between. Now is the time for creativity and ingenuity, to celebrate the heritage we have, along with the glamorous new buildings and the not so glamorous shanties.

TRADE EXHIBITIONDesign of the building does not exist in isolation, design starts with function, spec-ification of materials and how they are arranged to form structures and spaces. Finishes, utilities and decorations are just as much a part of intelligent design as the facades and so solution providers of all related options and choices available to designers, are invited to exhibit their wares and offerings.

WORKSHOPA national workshop to discuss the World Design Capital theme: Live Design, Transform Life, inviting all built environment designers and stakeholders to as-semble the broadest possible group, from architects and specifiers, to interior designers, engineers, and quantity surveyors; policy makers, property executives, contractors and subcontractors…Leading intellectuals and designers will travel to Cape Town to attend the event and to share their insights and experiences from their cities under sub themes: Af-rican Innovation Global Conversation, Bridging the Divide, Today for Tomorrow, and tours around the city under the sub theme Beautiful Spaces, Beautiful Things.
