PROGRAMME
DAY ONE: THURSDAY 16 JUNE 2011
DAY TWO: FRIDAY 17 JUNE 2011
Registration DURBAN BEACH FRONT venue; Pump House, Addington Beach.
Afternoon: A guided city tour with Andrew Makin creating the context of the master class. Expected Outcome: an understanding of the history and architectural heritage of DBN. Creating a macro scale understanding of the dynamics of the city.
Late afternoon: Tour and discussions- all Mentors & delegates: Urban issues in the city of DBN. Expected Outcome: Understanding the current renewal initiatives in the city. precinct master plans and implementation strategies: successes, failures, major new public facilities- Beachfront, waterfront, Convention Centre precinct, Masoes Madiba sta-dium, government precinct, inner city area, informal settlements etc.
Early evening: Lecture on their work-international mentors, followed by a panel discussion . Expected Outcome: Insight into the international architects’ design methodologies & processes.
Early morning: Micro scale investigations: Site and urban surround visit, documentations + on site conceptual design response workshop. Allocate delegates to group design teams to allow smaller group discussions and interactions: defining the extend of a design brief through work shopping with local community members & stakeholders and in discussions between delegate groups + tutors. Expected Outcome: To understand the role of the existing site conditions; site edges; urban planning guidelines, climatic and user group objectives as guidelines to the development of a design strategy and design brief.
Lunch time: studio crit sessions of initial responses- all groups.
Afternoon: Conceptual design development, models and sketching.
Early evening: Pin up of conceptual ideas, presenta-tions- and crits by tutors + group discussions.Expected outcome: The evolving of a strong con-ceptual response, learning form the group input + tutoring.
Evening: Lecture on their work- Andrew Makin + Peter Rich, followed by a panel discussion. Expected Outcome: Insight into the local architects’ design methodologies & processes.
Evening: Continue studio work by groups refining conceptual responses
DAY THREE: SATURDAY 18 JUNE 2011
DAY FOUR: SUNDAY 19 JUNE 2011
Early morning: Final Concepts- presentations + crits by tutors.
Late morning: lectures + short tour- : Multi-func-tional public projects in the inner city- successes and failures. Lunch in CBD. Expected Outcome: Lessons to be learned about local projects- sustainability, urban edges, functions, planning issues etc.
Afternoon: Studio sessions- design development.
Early evening: Presentations + feedback from tutors.
Evening: studio session.
Morning: final presentation drawings and models with informal feedback from tutors.
Late morning: Final exhibition of work + presenta-tions & final feedback from tutors & delegates. Expected outcome: To learn how to evolve a strong concept and quick design responses and decision making through group discussions and feedback from experienced tutors in a limited time.
Early lunch time: Conclusion- general overviews and feedback from tutors, feedback from delegates.
Delegates depart.
