I really want to hand it to some of the local pool tournament directors. The “same old same old” tournament format can get pretty boring, but we have seen some unique formats popping up over the last few months and the events just get better and better. It was especially nice to see Stingers and Skip & Jan’s work together on September’s Ultimate 7’s event. It would be great to see more cooperation like this in the future. Congratulations to our very own Sara Miller, who has accepted an invitation to represent the United States in the Women’s World 9-Ball Championship in China. Looks like Sara’s game is peaking at just the right time. I would like to offer a special “thanks” to Chuck Bobbitt to who helped quite a bit with this month’s issue. It is tough to be in all places at the right time and Chuck makes it a lot easier on me sometimes.

Until next time... - Mike

Balancad Wins Knobbys 8-Ball

Ed Scott looked well on his way to his third straight undefeated win at Knob-by’s 9’s and Under 8-Ball event on September 5th, but Burt Balancad and Jose Gonzalez had other plans for the night.

For the third straight month, it was Scott and Balancad facing off for the hot-seat, but this time it was Balancad sending Scott to the one loss side with a 2-1 victory.

Birthday boy Jose Gonzalez had lost to Sara Sorg early in the event, but he was making the most of his stay on the left side of the board. Jose won four straight matches and then made it five in a row with a 2-1 win over Scott.

The final match saw Burt win the first game and the players trade table runs in games two and three to give Balancad first place.

Recent Arizona newcomer Doug Hanson proved his cue superiority in one of the most grueling tournament in recent memory at the Ultimate 7’s event that took place at Stingers on September 27th and 28th.

The event, which involved four tournament directors and cooperation between Stingers and Skip & Jan’s, featured sixteen players at each room - divided into two groups of eight - playing a full day of round robin matches that switched games every rack. Players competed in rotat-ing games of 8-ball, 9-ball and 10-ball in each match, with the top two players from each group advancing to face off on Sunday in a double elimination bracket.

Players at each location drew a random playing card to determine which group they would play in. Skip & Jan’s featured the “diamonds” and “clubs” groups. The Diamonds group took some time to determine it’s two top players. Dave Stowers led the group without an early loss, with Randy Phillips in second with one loss and Tony Jenson waiting in the wings with two losses. Phillips had still not played Stowers and knew that a loss to Stowers would mean going to a tie break with Jenson. Phillips did away with that possibility with a hill-hill win over Stowers that earned he and Stowers their spots in the final bracket. The Clubs division saw Ryan Leven-good and Todd Dilley both finish the day with 6-1 records, which earned them their positions on day two. By virtue of having lost less games, Levengood took the top seed.

Stingers saw play in the “spades” and “hearts” divisions. The Hearts division was a two player dog fight all day as Joe Chyzy and Sara Miller quickly distanced themselves from the other

players. With Chyzy’s 7-5 win over Miller, he earned the top seed. The Spades group came down the wire with Rico Gonzales and Doug Hanson leading the way most of the day. After losing two of his first three matches (to Gon-zales and Hanson), Mike Howerton found a gear and went on a winning streak. Howerton went on to a 5-2 record and watched as Hanson and Gonzalez put their 5-1 records on the line in the last match of the night. A 7-1 win by Gonzales or a 7-2 win by Hanson would allow Howerton to capture second place in the division and Hanson obliged with a 7-2 win over Gonzalez.

Day two began with the final eight players matched up in a standard double elimination board that was domi-nated by Hanson and Dilley. Both players advanced to play for the hot-seat with Hanson winning 7-4. On the one loss side Dilley found his Clubs division rival Lev-engood waiting and Levengood defeated Dilley 7-4.

In the finals, Levengood took an early 2-0 lead, but Hanson once again dug down and took his game to a different level to win the next seven games for the 7-2 win and first place.

There are already plans to play this event with the 8’s in a couple of months.

Riding high on her recent invitation to represent America at the Women’s World 9-Ball Championship in China, Sara Miller joined the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour winners circle with an undefeated run through the field at Bullshooters on September 6th and 7th.

The tournament was full of upsets and unexpected results even on Saturday. By the end of day one, both #1 ranked Bernie Store and #2 ranked Susan Williams had been eliminated from the event. Store was an early victim to Tucson’s Tracy Price and Susan Wilbur, while Williams started off her day with two wins but fell to Tracie Hamman and Wilbur late Saturday.

While #3 ranked Rebecca Wagner was still in the event, she ended day one on the one loss side after a loss to Sara Miller in the 2nd round.

By the end of day one, the four undefeated players left standing (Tracie Ham-man, Barbara Lee, Tina Larsen and Sara Miller) had 0 AWBT wins on their resume between them. Wagner and Amanda Pulley were the only players on the one loss side with wins to their credit. They were joined by Susan Wilbur and Ashea Erdahl on the left side of the board.

Play got underway on Sunday with six players hoping to earn their first title. Barbara Lee and Sara Miller advanced on the winners side after both winning tough matches. Miller defeated Tina Larsen 7-5 and Lee went hill-hill before defeating Tracie Hamman.

On the one loss side, one of the remaining players who had tasted first place on the tour was quickly eliminated when Ashea Erdahl defeated Amanda Pulley 7-6. Meanwhile, Vegas’ Rebecca Wagner was sending Susan Wilbur to the rail 7-3.

Both Wagner and Erdahl kept to their winning ways in the next round as they eliminated the players coming from the right side of the board. Wagner sent road partner Larsen to the seats in 5th place and Erdahl sent Hamman to join Larsen in 5th place.

Wagner has won multiple AWBT tour stops and she relied on her experience in the late matches to score back to back 7-5 wins over Erdahl and then Lee in the semi-finals.

Just reading resumes, Wagner would have certainly been a big favorite in the final match against Miller. Matches are won and lost based on resumes though. Miller took an early lead and never let up the pressure on Wagner. Any time that Wagner seemed to be able to put together a decent run of balls to win a game, Miller would immediately come back and win the next one. It was - by far - the best that this reporter has ever seen Miller play. By the end of a very quick match, it was Miller with a 9-3 win and the first AWBT title of her career.

When reached for comment after the event, Miller said “ I only really felt I was on the road to winning when I was up by a few games in the finals and was still feeling ‘it’. From the get go Saturday, something must have clicked, I felt really good about how I was hitting the balls and they were responding just like I wanted. I never want to count my opponents, or my mistakes out. I have mo-ments of ‘what were you thinking’ more than I’d like!” When asked about her thoughts on how long it took her to add this title to her list of credentials, Miller responded “My member number is 7, so I’ve been around a while and I had no idea it would take me so long. It couldn’t have come at a better time. The ego boost, extra $ and ‘new found skills’ hopefully will go to China with me and I can have a great performance!”. Miller admitted that she did owe a co-worker for making the win possible. “Funny thing, I was supposed to work that night at 7pm. Thank god someone covered my shift, otherwise it would have been another 2nd place.”

The second chance event on Sunday saw Jamie Goodwin drop a third round match to Carmen Osenton, but come back with four straight match wins includ-ing defeating hot-seat winner Sandi Wilson in the finals.

Assistant Tour director Tres Kane gave his thanks to Mike and Julie Bates, and the staff of Bullshooters for hosting and adding $300 to the main event and $100 to the second chance event, Jose Gonzales of Las Glorias Grille for adding $100 to the main event and his partner Kristie Ortega for running another fine event.

The next event on the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour will be at Pockets in Tuc-son on October 25th - 26th.

The Perils of English

By Bob JewettPBIA Instructor

Side spin on the cue ball (or English, as we call it) can be a very useful tool for positioning the cue ball. It comes with three major prob-lems that you should be aware of when you’re practicing your spin shots so you will under-stand why you’re missing some of your shots, and what you need to consider consciously or subconsciously when you play these shots.

In the shot diagrammed, we need to pull the cue ball to the left off the cushion, and the easiest way is with left English. The first problem when play-ing a shot like this is that the cue ball doesn’t start out along the line of the stick. Instead it starts out at an angle away from the side where you applythe English. This is shown with the exaggerated arrow to the side labeled “squirt” which is what this phenomenon is called. Sometimes peoplerefer to this as “deflection,” but it is actually the cue stick which deflects while the cue ball squirts.

The second problem is that the cue ball doesn’t travel in a straight line to the object ball, but in-stead swerves or curves to the left, again shown by the exaggerated curved line. The curve is in the opposite direction, so it might actually

cancel the effect of the squirt.

A third problem arises when the cue ball hits the object ball. Instead of driving the object ball straight away from the cue ball, the side spin grabs the object ball a little and pulls it to the side.

Each of these aspects of side spin can be more than large enough to make you miss a shot, and each of them has more or less effect depending on the speed, spin and distance of the shot.

Squirt increases as you use more English. If you have a table-length shot, and use a lot of side, you might miss the object ball completely even thoughyou were aiming for a full-ball hit. Squirt also changes for different shaft designs, and both Predator and Meucci Cues have been very ac-tive in working to reduce this problem.

Swerve is affected by several other things. It goes up as more spin is used, but stick eleva-tion and the use of draw will also increase the amount of curveyou see. Since the curve takes time to develop, if you shoot hard, swerve is reduced. Most play-ers elevate more than they need to, and all (article continued on page 33)

APA Phoenix Metro held its session ending sum-mer 8 Ball and 9 Ball Tri-Cities tournaments last month at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. 48 teams in all from all over Maricopa County showed up for 2 weekends to compete for a chance to play in Las Vegas next August at the APA National Team Cham-pionships. 12 teams from these tournaments will advance to the year-end ‘Cities’ tournament next June. APA’s ‘Road to Vegas’ tournament series will ultimately produce 4 Eight Ball teams and 2 Nine Ball teams that will have a paid trip to Las Vegas to compete in the ‘World’s Largest Pool Tournament’. The APA National Team Championships are held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino every August and are listed in the Guiness book of world records as the largest pool tournament in the world. The first step in the year long “Road To Vegas “series is the Tri-Cities event held last month. Two more similar

events will be held between now and next May that will each produce 12 teams for the second step in the series, the Cities event. During the Cities event to be held in June, a total of 24 Eight Ball and 12 Nine Ball teams will compete for those 6 important paid slots to play in Vegas.

Other events in our ‘Road to Vegas’ series include a tournament for the Ladies Only division, which will send one of the 3 person ladies teams, a Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles team, several 8 ball and 9 ball doubles teams, and two Masters teams. All teams earning their spot to Vegas are given a travel as-sistance, a paid room while they are participating in their event and a paid entry into their event.

APA teams consist of 5 to 8 Players of all different skill levels and age groups. The great thing about

the APA pool league is that each team must have as many beginner players as they have good players. Teams are structured in such a way that the lower skilled players are just as important to a team as the higher level players. In fact, many teams that play APA are family teams. Gina Nowlin, the league operator for the phoenix and Maricopa County APA, says ‘We have teams that consist of the Mom, Dad, kids and grandkids’. These families use their pool night out for some ‘good ole family bonding’, she said. The handicapped league insures that all play-ers, no matter what their skill level, have an equal chance of winning. The APA’s Equalizer Handicap System is the fairest handicapping system available.

This session winners are as follows:

APA Phoenix Metro sponsered a Preliminary Round to the U S Amateur’s Championship at Main Street Billiards on Sep-tember 27 & 28th. Two Arizona players qualified to play in the Championship to be held at Strokers in Tampa Florida on November 6-9, 2014.

Tim Daniel, who plays out of Main Street Billiards in Mesa, will be traveling to Tampa next month to compete with other players from around the country for the prestigious champion-ship. Winners of that event will qualify for a 2015 pro event.

Guyle (Tom) Fielder was also a winner on Sunday. Tom, however, is unable to make the trip to Florida next month and graciously passed his place to the runner up, David Weiss. This will be David’s second appearance in a year to the final’s. David won his spot last year at this same tournament at Main Street Billiards.

Both Tim Daniel and David Weiss are members of the APA pool league, who puts on the U S Amateur Championship. Any player from any league or pool affiliation is welcome to play in this singles event that consists of a non handicapped race to 7 games. The format is both 8 ball and nine ball, simi-lar to the APA’s masters division. The player winning the coin toss at the beginning of the match chooses whether he wants to break or which game he wishes to begin with. If he chooses 8 ball, the contestants play 5 games of 8 ball and then finish the 7 game race in 9 ball. The BCA Southwest Regional Championship re-turned to Fort McDowell on August 28th - Sep-tember 1st for the fifth running of this popular event. Play took place in eight divisions this year, with the inclusion of a second chance 6’s and under event.

The event kicked off with the scotch doubles event and it was only fitting that since last year’s champions - Jose Gonzalez and Leandra Gaff - were not in attendance, last year’s runner ups - Brian & Veronica Poore - took the hot-seat. Brian & Veronica beat Jeremy Gibbs and Bernie Store 4-2 for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Jeremy & Bernie found Sara Miller & Tony Denton waiting. Jeremy & Bernie had sent Tony & Sara to the one loss side with a 4-0 loss in the final four on the winner’s side, and while the rematch was closer, it was still Jeremy & Bernie scoring a 4-2 win to earn their place in the finals against Team Poore.

Bernie & Jeremy rode their momentum from the one loss side to back to back 4-2 and 4-0 wins for first place, while Brian & Veronica settled for second place again.

The Men’s Open singles division would also crown a new champion, as defending champion Tyler Fleishman was not in attendance. Tim Dan-iel, who recently moved to Arizona from Florida, won this event with an undefeated run through the field of sixty nine players.

Daniel defeated Mark Arnold 5-2 for the hot-seat and then ended Donald Mangahas’ seven match winning streak with a 5-2 win over Mangahas in the finals.

The 6’s & Under division is always a favorite at this event, and this year was no exception. The event saw a 20% gain in attendance from last

year. Elgin Miguel built on his 13th place finish here last year in the same event and put together an eight match winning streak to take the event undefeated.

Miguel defeated Perfecto Diaz 5-1 for the hot-seat and then scored a hill-hill win over Juan Silva in the first and only set of the finals.

The new second chance 6s & Under event saw Doreen Sunn defeat Laura Boothroyd 4-2 in the finals for the win.

The Ladies singles division came down to three players familiar with each other’s games. The final three players this year turned out to be the same final three players from last year.

Susan Williams came from the one loss side and double dipped Amanda Pulley in the final’s of last year’s event. This year, Williams eliminated Pulley in third place, but had to settle for second place as her quest to double dip Store in the finals fell short. Williams was able to take the final to two sets, but couldn’t stop Store in the second set of the finals.

The Men’s Advanced/Master Singles division crown has not been won by an Arizona player since Pete Lhot-ka’s undefeated run in 2011. It was once again won by a visitor from out of state as Las Vegas’ Ronnie Allen defeated Chuck Evans two out of three sets for the win.

Allen took the hot-seat with a 7-5 win over Evans. After Evans eliminated Tres Kane, he defeated Allen 7-3 in the first set of the finals, but dropped the second set 7-5.

The Ladies Team event was changed to three player teams and that change may have contributed to an al-most entirely new cast of players facing off for the title this year.

Susan Williams was the only returning player from last year’s finals as she and her “Ohh.. Those Girls” team-mates Tami Hathcock, Sharon Anderson and Sonia

Flores faced off against Breaking Bad, made up of Ebony Kelly, Sophia Morquecho and Donna Taylor. Breaking Bad took the hot-seat, but after eliminating The Clutches in third place, “Those Girls” were right back for the finals.

“Those Girls” would take the finals to two sets, but it was Breaking Bad who broke good and ran away with the title in the second set 7-1. Ebony Kelly commented after the final match, “I’d have to say that even though there was a low turn out for the womens event, all of the teams were extremely strong and we battled every single match. I’m just thankful we didn’t get double dipped!”

The Men’s Mixed Teams division also saw a change in format as the teams were dropped from five to four players.

Although one of the teams had changed their names, the event basically came down to the same two teams have competed for the title last year. “No Mercy” - made up of two defending cham-pions Brian Reich & Bret Huth, along with Todd Rowitz & Jason Polk - took the hot seat with a win over last year’s runner up finishers “The Heat” - made up of Jonathan Rowe, George Rowe, Chad Barber and Troy Ridder.

In the true double elimination finals, The Heat took the first set 8-7. The second set was close the entire way, but the match came down to one game at hill-hill and George Rowe (the lowest rated player on the team) navigated a tough end-rack to pocket the final eight ball for The Heat, as they took first place.

Representatives from the BCA were very pleased with the turnout again this year and indicated that talks are underway with Fort McDowell to sign another multi year contract to keep the event there for years to come.

Have you seen this cue?

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

Have you noticed a growing problem and more of these of flyers titled “Have you seen this cue”?

The flyers usually have a good color picture and description where or how it was taken. Most offer a reward of some type and even the state-ment of “no questions asked” if someone wil just return it.

Some of the suggested ways to protect your cue are:

A. Sign under the wrap

B. Take clear good pictures and issue a letter of authenticity at purchase

C. Customization

D. The cue maker’s mark or signature should maybe be in more than one place on the cue. Such as the pin and the butt cap. A butt cap can be easily changed but a marked pin might be a little tougher.

E. A signature that is permanent and only vis-ible under Ultra Violet light. This might make it easier to recover once it is stolen. It could

have the cue maker’s signature along with the owner’s.

In addition, I interviewed Keith Nickerson - the builder of Keith Nickerson Custom Cues in Tucson Arizona. http://www.nickersoncues.com.

He uses these techniques plus he numbers each of his cues and takes good clear color pictures of each one. He helps any of his customer’s identify that they were the original buyer. He also has a certificate of authentication that includes a picture that the buyer receives along with the new cue. The cue could be signed with a permanent invisible ink pen. The signature is permanent and only visible under Ultra Violet light. It could also have the cue maker’s signa-ture along with the owner’s.

What to do once you realize the cue is gone?

Contact the management staff

Maybe someone turned it in or they know something

Do not panic. Retrace your steps and make sure

it is really gone, not just put behind a door etc.

One of the most important steps is to file a police report

A police report does many things

A. The cue will now show up on a stolen prop-erty list and if a pawnshop has it, they are in trouble.

B. Sometimes, an insurance policy for your home or car will cover things not inside the home or car.

I called up my State farm agent and spoke to them about having a police report or not and the consensus is a police report will never hurt you when trying to claim a loss.

C. If you find it on your own at a pawnshop or on the internet and want it back with a police officer on scene they can pull the report even months later.

Arizona Billiard & Dart NewsOctober 2014GoPlayPool Celebrates Two Years Since Launching the GoPlayPool App

Aliso Viejo, CA, September 17, 2014: When Mary Ann Starkey walked into a southern California pool room and saw gorgeous Diamond tables, she wished she had known about the room years ago. The room was located a mere 15 minutes from her house and had a great atmosphere. It was during that time that Mary Ann and Ramin Bakhtiari, her boyfriend and fellow pool player, had begun build-ing an app designed for pool players. But it wasn’t until she saw that room that she knew what direc-tion to go with the app and the start-up company. Mary Ann thought, “There should be an app that tells you where to find a pool room or bar that has pool tables. It should tell you what you’ll find when you get there, and allow the rooms them-selves to promote the events they hold. Whether it’s tournaments or leagues or even things that have nothing to do with pool, like their menu or other kinds of games or entertainment.” The task of building GoPlayPool had begun.

Mary Ann and Ramin knew all along that they did not want to charge the players or users of the app to find the information they would provide. They always knew they wouldn’t charge anyone to download the app. They decided that offering pool rooms an affordable way to promote their business was the best way to go, along with giving pool players a source to find more pool rooms and more tournaments. That is why they decided to give pool rooms a monthly membership. The member-ship is free for the first 30 days, and after the free trial, it’s only $19.95 a month. With the member-ship they create detailed profiles of what their room offers its patrons. Everything from what types of pool tables they have to what nights their tournaments are. They can include their food and drink menus, and list all of their other amenities. If they host darts tournaments on Tuesday nights and ladies nights on Wednesday, they can put that

in their profile. While Mary Ann and Ramin’s fo-cus has always been on pool, they knew that pool rooms would benefit from being able to promote all of the other aspects of their room.

It was a long road, filled with sleepless nights and spending hours doing research. But after nearly a year, the GoPlayPool App was ready to launch and on September 17, 2012 the app became available in both The App Store and Google Play. To say that Ramin and Mary Ann were proud would be a vast understatement. The long road that stretched out in front of them would require hard work. In order for the pool rooms to have a reason to be-come a member, they needed to get people to start

using the app. So, they spent the next year pro-moting it like crazy. Social media, press releases, articles and advertising with pool magazines and news sources, live stream advertising, even driv-ing hundreds of miles to various tournaments just to hit another area and introduce the app to players and rooms.

The support of already established companies and the players and fans of the game has been incredible. Mary Ann said, “With September 17th marking 2 years since we launched the app, it’s great to see how far we’ve come. Looking back now, I think we’ve always had tremendous support (continued on page 33)

Sutherland/Williams Split at Stingers

September 20th Stingers held a call 9Ball event. It came down to two players, Mike Williams and Ben Sutherland.

Mike’s road to the finals consisted of a first round bye, then he battled his way through Steve Blackburn, Skyler Flaherty, and Ben Sutherland to win the hot seat. Ben’s night also started with a first round bye followed by wins over Pete Barrios, and Brian Reich. Ben and Mike’s hot seat match went hill – hill with Mike coming out on top.

Ben then faced Brian Reich again on the one loss side with a final score of 7-4 to move on to play Mike again for the finals. Ben came out firing on all cylin-ders and won the first set 8-3. Both players decided to call it a night and split 1st and 2nd place. Great shooting everyone and see you next time

Final payouts:1st Mike Williams $3352nd Ben Sutherland $3353rd Brian Reich $100

The Dart Thrower: Visualizing - Use Your Imagination

By Karlheinz Zöchlingwww.dartbase.com

Would you like to practice match situations you have never been in to avoid surprise? Would you like to change your throwing technique but you always fall back to the old one when you are practicing? These are only two things you can handle better when you have learned and used the mental technique of visualizing.

The basic of visualizing sounds easy: Sit down in a comfortable chair or lay down on your bed or couch, close your eyes and imagine yourself in the situation you want to practice. That’s it. Maybe some of you now think that’s “bah humbug voodoo” or just rubbish, but you can be ensured it is not. And for sure every sport star in any sport has used and is still using this technique.

Of course, the tricky thing is this must be done right. Doing it right means doing it intense and aware. Let’s say you have troubles doubling out against an opponent who is better than you. Whenever you get the chance you are surprised and you blunder. Take some time to visualize. Close your eyes and see yourself standing in front of the oche. Try to imagine as many de-tails as possible. Hear the quiet (or not so quiet, yes) noise of the crowd around. By the way, do you imagine in colors or black and white?

Turn the color on if it’s off! Feel the weight of your throwing arm, feel your dart in your hand. Can you smell the chalky odor around a steeltip board? The more details you can imagine the better it is and the more you will benefit from your solitary visualizing session. Now in your imagination step forward and kill the double. Did you catch it? If you are a good visualizer you might still face problems hitting it! If you hit everything in your visualizing session then you probably don’t imagine intense enough.

Another example: You are working on a change in your throwing technique. Do you remember how your muscles felt when they first tried the new throw? Don’t you still feel this odd muscle strain on your bad “the old style” throws? This is a remembrance you can use for visualizing to figure out the differences . Good visualizers can “throw” in their imagination and really “feel” their throw. If you can imagine the feel-ing when the dart goes wrong and the feeling when the dart goes right, you can visualize it, analyze the difference, and do this more often and more precise and controlled than you would ever be able to practice on a “real” board. This is the big advantage you have if you are a good visualizer: you can control yourself and even control your reactions. If you know the feeling

of a “perfect” hitting throw you can deepen it in visualizing sessions which will help you re-producing it in matchplay. This feedback is the main benefit from visualizing. And of course the more often you visualize the better you will be able to control and use it.

Visualizing should be done regularly, and the number of different situations or feelings you can work on by visualizing is nearly infinite. Here are only some:• The “dreaded opponent” problem• Tensed situations• Problems with your throwing technique• Nervousness• Bad playing conditions• Preparing against opponents you know well

and play often• Preparing against opponents you know• but you’ve never played against• You have time left you could use for prac-

ticing but there is no dart around

And finally one sidestep to something com-pletely (?) different from our darting universe: Nureev, the famous ballet dancer, once was asked if he doesn’t think it’s a pity he can’t see his beautiful dance himself. “But I DO see me dancing!” he answered... Visualizing?!

Mike, I am wanting to start playing darts, should I start with Soft tip or Steel tip?

OK, this one may get me in trouble.

Steel darts is where it all began and believe me all the soft tip players understand that. In England and several overseas countries, it is all steel, they laugh at the soft tip game.

But here in the states, nearly every top steel player is play-ing more soft tip than steel tip. The main reason? You guessed it, money!!! What a surprise, the soft tip game is throwing money at these players left and right. The competition is unbelievable and the players all around the world are playing.

So my recommendation would be soft tip. Not that you are going to go on tour any time soon, but there are thousand of

more tournaments and players playing soft tip darts. Every night of the week several of our local bars are packed with league players. If league isn’t your bag, there is a tournament on ev-ery corner. It has gotten so crazy that bars who have no business running tournaments are trying to do just that.

So get a medium priced set of soft tip darts and practice. Find your favorite bar that has soft tip boards and talk to the bar about on line games. Arachnid Galaxy 3’s have a button that you can put all your information on and play against people all over. The other night there were over 150 players on line on Arachnid boards. Phoenix Darts and Darts live have cards that do the same thing. Find players of your level and play them on line, it is great practice and you can see your progress as you get better.

When you feel comfortable, jump into a $5 tournament that is a blind draw, get a partner and see what you can do. Make sure you get your feet wet with a $5 entry event before you jump into a

By Mike Bates

Ask Mike

big tournament. Build your confidence and ask others around you to help. Usually there are lots of players in the valley who are great teachers as well as players.

When you are ready join a league. There are hundreds across the whole valley.

If your goal is to be a top level player, then play against better competition and your game will move up.

When you are ready, try the Masters B league and move your game up even more. Get to know the better play-ers and they will lead you in the right direction.

I have seen guys in their 30’s and 40’s just start playing and become World Champions in a few years. On the flip side I see guys who have played at the same medium range level for 30 years. It all depends on how serious you want to be, and how much time you want to put into the game. Either way you choose, darts is a great game to choose

for your hobby.

These are just my thoughts and I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

Tucson Crew Runs Away With First Place

The Tucson Crew (made up of Daric Craft, Davis Weiss and James Leonard) took the long route, but still came back to win Stingers’ 3 Man team 9-ball event on September 13th and 14th.

The Tucson Crew looked to be early favorites in the event, but nobody told that to Money (Luke Hagarty, Justin Turner & Ricky Tyrell) as Money sent the Tucson team to the one loss side early.

Money would go on to the take the hot-seat with a 12-11 win over Breaking Badly (Burt Balancad, Frank Alvarez Jr. and Troy Ridder).

On the one loss side, The Tucson Crew didn’t appear to want to take the long ride back to Tucson empty handed. They scored wins over Strokin 3, Animal House and then Breaking Badly 12-10 to send Breaking Badly to the rail in third place.

The final set was true double elimination and The Tucson Crew scored 12-9 and 12-6 wins to avenge their early loss to Money and capture first place.

“Clearing” Up The Kamui Confusion

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

For the past three or four years, the most popular brand of tip has been Kamui. Kamui tips are made in Japan and consist of laminated layers of specially treated pigskin. Kamuis are known for their fine playability and their low rate of de-lamination.

Recently, a new customer walked into my shop and asked me to install a Kamui Black Super-Soft on a very nice, but used stick that he had just purchased from a friend. I happily did so, and the customer left, supposedly just as happy as I.

A few days later, the customer returned. How-ever, this time he didn’t seem so happy. He said, “They told me I didn’t get a Kamui tip!” I asked him who “they” were. He said the people at the shop where he took his stick to compare it to other new models in an attempt to get a value on it. Turns out that “they” are a close competitor of mine that also re-tips cues.

So I then asked my customer: What made my competitor think that I had not given him a genuine Kamui tip? He said they told him that all Kamui tips have a clear backing on the un-derside of them, and if the clear pad isn’t there, it is not a genuine Kamui tip. He said they also

showed him all of their Kamui tips, and that they all had the clear pad.

It was at that point that I shared some informa-tion with my customer that I am about to share with you here.

Kamui makes four different styles of tip, each

available in four different hardness designa-tions. Those hardness designations are: Super-Soft, Soft, Medium, and Hard.

The first style of tip that Kamui made was light brown in color and was available in the four aforementioned hardness designations. Soon,

Hanson lost to Todd Dilley in the second round of play, but made his way through the one loss side unscathed for a change at revenge.

On the right side of the board, Dilley continued his recent strong play and de-feated Tony Yuzuik 4-3 for the hot-seat.

Both sets of the finals were close, with Hanson scoring 4-2 and 4-3 wins over Dilley for first place.

Arizona Billiard & Dart NewsOctober 2014(Go Play Pool App Celebrates Two Years Continued from page 17)from within the industry. People see what we’re trying to do and they are more than happy to support a resource that just keeps growing and expanding. I think the direction we chose couldn’t have worked out any better. We’ve given pool halls an opportunity to advertise and promote their room for an amazingly low rate. And unlike advertising in the newspaper, people will keep coming back to the GoPlayPool App. We’re constantly adding new features and keeping the content fresh, so people always have a reason to come back. Users will always know when new members sign up and be able to see the member profiles.” Along with the great cost of the membership, pool rooms will also receive a physical package when they sign up. It contains thousands of dollars’ worth of free sample merchandise, vouchers and discounts from companies within and outside of the pool & billiards industry.

Since the GoPlayPool App launched, it has undergone a lot of changes. As more time goes by, it becomes even more user-friendly and has thousands of hours of engaging content. Recently, they added a section called “GoPlayPool 101” which features hundreds of videos, drills and instructional material from some of the best instructors in the United States. Other sections like Flyers, a Calendar of World Events from AZ Billiards, and of course the phone and map directories of pool rooms all across the U.S. will keep users coming back for more, giving pool rooms every reason to sign up.

The GoPlayPool Team has also expanded their endeavors by reaching out to the community. After learning that a few different players had come down with various illnesses, Ramin and Mary Ann wanted to help. So they created the “Pool Together” site, as an extension of GoPlayPool. If players in need have a benefit tournament or charity, they can post it on the Pool Together site to reach more people and hopefully get more donations. Since taking on the venture, Ramin and Mary Ann have been a part of various fundraisers which have raised over $50,000.00 for players in need, or the families they have left behind. You can learn more and donate to the listed causes by visiting pooltogether.goplay-pool.com.

If you’re a player or fan of the game, you can download the free GoPlayPool App for iOS and Android devices. It’s also available on Windows and Black-berry devices. Much of the information is also available in a mobile and web format. For more information, please visit www.goplaypool.com.

For all other inquiries, feel free to get in touch with the GoPlayPool App team at [email protected].

(“Clearing Up The Kamui Confusion continued from page 24)however, Kamui came out with a tip that was all black in color, and also available in four different hardness designations. After that, the two different styles were somewhat appropriately called Kamui Original (the industry refers to them as Kamui Brown) and Kamui Black. Kamui advertises that the Originals are for “Accurate Shooting” and the Blacks are for “Precise Cue ball Control.” Both of those descriptions are just meaningless marketing talk.

Some time later, Kamui got the bright idea that they needed to affix a clear vinyl pad to the underside of their tips, and the new padded tips be-came known as Kamui Clear Original, and Kamui Clear Black. Kamui’s claim for needing the clear pad is in order to prevent installation glue from wicking into the bottom layer of the tip and hardening it, thereby taking away one effective tip layer from the user.

I dispute that claim for two reasons: (1) The glue Kamui uses to affix the clear pad to the underside of the tip does the same thing as glue used to install a padless tip, so nothing is gained by having a clear pad; and (2) Kamui tips are so thick that several layers have to be cut off during in-stallation just to get them down to a playable size, so if you want to retain the layer that wicked glue takes away, you just leave one extra tip layer on during installation.

I will point out, however, that there may be one advantage to Kamui’s clear pad that even the people at Kamui have overlooked, and that advan-tage is that the pad may act as a shock absorber, thereby helping to pro-long the life of both the tip and ferrule. At least that idea sounds much more feasible than there being a problem with glue wicking.

Now I’ve said all that to say this: a clear pad is NOT the sign of a genu-ine Kamui tip. If you want to make sure you are getting the real thing - whether it be Kamui tips or anything else - make sure you are dealing with someone who knows their products and is someone you can trust. If in doubt, have your installer show you the label on the product before installation.

(Bob Jewett Perils of English Continued from page 7)players elevate the stick on nearly every shot. Getting the stick flatter is a good way to reduce the guess work when using side spin.

Throw can vary quite a bit with the cleanliness of the balls. If the cue ball is old and covered with ugly green chalk spots, its friction against theobject ball will be higher and throw will increase. Throw also seems to be larger for softer hits, but since swerve is also larger then, and they tend tomove the object ball in the same direction, it is hard to separate the two effects. If the object ball is close to the pocket, throw is a minor concern, but if the object ball has a long way to go to thepocket, neglecting throw will result in a sure miss.

In the same way, squirt and swerve have more effect if the cue ball has a long way to go to get to the object ball, and might be safely ignored when the two balls are close.

Some players try to use side spin to put the objectball in the pocket, but this is almost never necessary. There are a few situations in which you needto swerve a little around a blocking ball or to throw the object ball into the needed line, but these are quite rare and for most shots, the added complication of the three problems listed above should warn you away from any needless spin.Keep it simple.

To practice spin shots, set up a shot like the one shown, and see whether you can get the cue ball to A, B or C. You will need to set the object ball up in the same place each time because on this shot, the angle of entry to the pocket makes a big difference in how you can manipulate the cue ball. I think you will find that draw combined with left English will get the best results. Start with the cue ball close to the object ball -- within six inches --and gradually work it back. Try varying the speedand the amount of spin and see how the three factors vary. And remember to chalk!
