Phillip Come From Behind to Win!!by Ms Courtney Carrigan, Sports Co-ordinator
The Interhouse Athletics Carnival was held over five days of competition, encompassing two weeks due to a rain delay, with the main carnival on Friday
31 July. The carnival started in week 2 with the running of the 3000 m on Monday and Spirit Day on Tuesday. It was fun and colourful with students dressed in house colours/themes and Ayr High’s ‘Superhero’ themed skits were held - Banks Fireball, Cook Cyclones, Macquarie Mufasa and HydroPhillip. Then the rain came and washed our oval away. We picked up where we left off in week 3 with the 1500 m on Wednesday, field events held midday Thursday and the track and
standard events on Friday.Cook took a strong lead into the Friday carnival with the other houses changing placings throughout the previous days of competition. After a quick assembly, it was straight down to competition in the first standard events. Throughout the day, the other houses mounted a fight-back with only 20 points between the top three houses going into the start of the relays. Phillip powered through the relays to claim victory over Cook, with Macquarie in third place and Banks in fourth place. The final scores were Phillip - 2261, Cook - 2230, Macquarie - 2221, Banks - 2066.There was awesome spirit by all houses throughout the entire carnival. It was Macquarie who showed the greatest spirit with their Spirit Day decorations and lion-hearted skit, and their enthusiasm and support for team mates to take out the Spirit Stick.
The Ayr High Footrace, a handicapped (staggered start) 100 m sprint, was run with a female and male race containing the fastest 100 m sprinters from all six age groups (U12-U19). Stevie-Lee (U12) and Jared Poletti (U19) were winners of the race, claiming $50 each. Once again it was a great spectacle, with all remaining students and staff lining the side of the track to cheer and support the runners in the final event of the day. There were six records broken over the carnival. Congratulations to the following students - Cecillia Cason (U12 Discus), Stevie-Lee (U12 800 m), Zander Dallecort (U12 200 m & 400 m), Charley Ruskin (U14 Javelin) and Shae Munro (U15 High Jump). Congratulations must go to the age champions who delivered outstanding performances, particularly Kai Palmer (U16) who won the “Individual Athletics Champion” trophy which recognises the highest points scorer of the carnival. Kai finished with 158 points. Special mention to Matthew Kolb (U14), who finished second overall with 130 points and Charley Ruskin (U14) finishing with 126 points.(Continued Page 4)

Congratulations to Phillip, the winners of the 2020 Interhouse
Athletics Carnival! What a fantastic couple of days we had. After last week’s disappointing rain delay, we had absolutely glorious weather on Thursday and Friday. Phillip won after coming from behind to pip Cook at the post. Macquarie came in a very close-placed third, but took out the coveted Spirit Stick on the day. A very big thanks to all our staff and their efforts in preparing and running the carnival. Our Year 12 House Captains also did a fantastic job of creating house spirit over the extended period of time. Overall, the carnival had a really fun, friendly and exciting atmosphere. This was mainly due to the involvement and behaviour of all our students over the two days. Well done Hawks!Thank you to the parents/carers who were involved in the Learning Conversations last Monday evening. To maximise student learning, we need to foster the three way partnership between student, teacher and parent/carer attending Learning Conversations. This helps parents/carers to stay connected with student progress, helping them support their child to achieve improved outcomes.Year 10 students and their parents/carers started the journey on developing
their Student Education and Training Plans (SET Plans) in week 4 as they prepare for starting senior school next year. We encourage students to talk with their families about possible career pathways that they are interested in. From there, we develop a plan that supports the students to be able to follow those career pathways through Years 11 and 12. Conversations will continue with the students and their Case Managers all the way through to graduation in 2022.Over the last week, the Covid-19 threat unfortunately has increased in Queensland with the reporting of cases that have been brought into the South East corner by interstate travellers. This means we have to renew our efforts and awareness to help protect our community from the virus. We all have a part to play by following actions to help stop the spread:Social Distancing • Stay 1.5 m away from people when
outside your home.Personal Hygiene • Wash your hands with soap and
water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitiser frequently, especially before eating.
• Cover your cough, preferably with your arm. If you cough onto your hands, wash your hands immediately.
If feeling ill - stay at home• If you or your child is feeling ill (even
if only slightly), stay at home, contact a health professional and have a COVID-19 test.
• If asked to self-isolate until test results come back, contact the school, stay at home until a negative result is confirmed.
If we all follow these basic strategies, we will all help in keeping the Ayr High Family and the Burdekin community safe.Yours in Education

I have enjoyed working with you. I am happy to leave here, knowing that the students will be left in the very capable hands of Mrs Sarah Matthews who returns from maternity leave. Thanks to everyone for your support!
Goodbye and Thanks for Everything

Friday 7 August was the last official day of work for our long
serving IT ‘guru’ Brent Pickup. After 11 years of invaluable service to staff, students and families across the district, Brent has had the chance to further his IT skills with a new position within the Department in Brisbane. Ayr High has been blessed to have a person of Brent’s calibre to help with IT requirements. He has given an outstanding level of service over his time here. He will always remain a member of the Ayr High Family. We wish him well in his new IT endeavours.

Learning Conversations
by Mr Kerry Flynn, Deputy Principal
It was great to see over 270 conversations happening in I Block over the course of the evening of Monday 3 August. We were
committed to having face-to-face conversations to reconnect with our community, given the disruptions so far this year. As a result, Covid-19 restrictions meant that we had to reconfigure the arrangements for the evening and we thank families for their support and patience. Learning Conversations are a terrific way for families and the school to come together to ensure that we are all working in the best interests of our students. The staff appreciated the opportunity to talk with families on Monday and feedback from families as they left was overwhelmingly positive.
Year 10 SET Planning by Mr Kerry Flynn, Deputy Principal
Currently our Year 10 students are in the middle of the important decisions around transitioning to Year 11 - career pathways and subject combinations.
Students have been working on their Short Course in Career Education during their Wellbeing lessons all year as well as working with their Case Manager to ensure a smooth transition. On
Tuesday 4 August, the majority of students and their families met with Case Managers to start the formal process of creating their individual pathway through Years 11 and 12. Conversations were very productive and we are confident that students are well on the way to setting up a successful pathway.

Champion House - PhillipInterhouse Athletics Carnival
The success of the carnival was due to the enthusiastic input of House
Captains, Year 12 students and House Teachers and many school staff who helped in preparing, supervising or officiating. They are thanked for their efforts as are Mrs Woods, the Interact Club and Year 12 students who volunteered to help run the canteen; Mrs Bromham and her student helpers who ran the coffee cart; and A & B Rural and Elders for the use of their tents. Special thanks goes to Mr Rob Smith (Groundskeeper) who got our grounds looking so fantastic after the oval was water logged and the many staff and students who helped in preparation of the carnival. Your efforts are appreciated.

Students Excel in QAMT
Mathematics Quizby Mr Rob Scalia, HOD - Mathematics & Science
The Year 7 and 8 QAMT Mathematics Quiz is held annually and provides gifted mathematics
students the opportunity to meet and challenge their peers from other participating schools. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 restrictions, it wasn’t possible to meet with our neighbouring schools face to face but instead, each school was given the opportunity to conduct the competition at their own school with their own students. Ayr State High School was the only school in the Burdekin to take up this offer! The four teams consisting of twelve students gave excellent performances as they answered a series of gruelling mathematics questions in each round.
It was an extremely close competition with only a couple of points separating the teams throughout the rounds. It wasn’t until the final round where Noah, Mia and Sophie took out the top spot! These students eagerly await to see whether their winning score will give them the opportunity to compete against other successful Townsville schools. Many thanks to Mr Scalia, Mrs Woods, Mr Abraham and Giselle Le Feuvre for their help in organising the quiz and making the event a success! Well done students!

Year 11 and 12 Hospitality - Pizza Partyby Mrs Vicky Bromham, Hospitality Teacher
Congratulations to the Year 11 and 12 Hospitality classes on their
recent winning of a pizza party from their Hospitality RTO - Blueprint. This was awarded to them for “…consistently working hard, showing awesome work ethic in class and for being champions during lockdown!” They were selected as one of five schools in Queensland.
Year 12 Hospitality - Responsible Service
Of Gamblingby Mrs Vicky Bromham, Hospitality Teacher
Twenty-four Year 12 Hospitality students recently completed their Responsible Service of Gambling
Course (RSG) with Donna Law and Graeme Tate from Blueprint. The students acquired information about the strict legislation that must be adhered to and not only had to complete theory assessment, but partook in role plays. This qualification provides another unit towards completion of Certificate II in Hospitality or Certificate III in Hospitality and allows them to work within the RSG sector in the Hospitality Industry.

Semester 1 Celebration AssemblyOn Tuesday 4 August, we held our school assembly to recognise those students who embody the learning characteristics
we want all our students to aspire to. This year, we had an increase in the number of students receiving awards across all year levels. So much so, that we had to present the Year 12 Awards on the next day.Awards were presented to students in the areas of Attendance - Perfect (100%) and Awesome (95% or better), Effort and Behaviour - Gold and Silver as well as Academic Achievement Awards. Our message to students was to take responsibility for the things that you can control each day. When you do, success follows.

NQ Theatre Residencyby Clara Hutton, Yr 11 Student
In the second week of winter holidays, the first North
Queensland Theatre Residency Week was held with the aim to bring theatre into the regional parts of Queensland. Groups in Townsville and Ayr worked on various types of theatre such as Shakespeare, film and television, musical theatre and mock injury make-up. The week started with 12 students from various schools in Ayr, who then travelled to Townsville for the last two days of the workshop to perform the pieces they had worked on and interact with the two other Townsville groups. This experience was eye opening, with all students learning the development and origins of theatre. It was a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and learn that you aren’t just acting for yourself but also your fellow actors. Queensland Theatre and TheatreiNQ collaborated to put on this amazing workshop and even though Covid-19 may not have let it go ahead as planned, it was definitely an amazing and educational experience. I would highly recommended anyone with a passion for the Performing Arts to participate in this program.
