2

Overview and

Introduction

The integration of the personal computer (PC) intothe home stereo system has provided a revolutionaryway to purchase, organize, and play your digitalmusic collection. The Ayre QB-9 digital-to-audio(D/A) converter provides an equally revolutionaryway to play back your music files withunprecedented fidelity and realism.

Connected via the ubiquitous USB port, the QB-9generates a fixed-frequency master audio clock andrequests the data from the computer at the correcttime for jitter-free playback of your music. This isall done using the standard device drivers suppliedwith all recent operating systems, allowing simpleinstallation and operation with most computers.

The QB-9 also utilizes opto-couplers to providetotal electrical isolation for the connections betweenyour computer and music system. This minimizesthe introduction of unwanted radio-frequencyinterference (RFI), generated by all computers.

Avoiding the use of wireless networks (e.g.,Wi-Fi), by employing wired connections instead, will reduce RFI levels in your home and results inimproved sound quality for any music system.

3

Connections and

Installation

The Ayre QB-9 is easy to connect and use. Thefollowing guidelines will ensure that the installationgoes smoothly.

Analog Outputs

The Ayre QB-9 offers both balanced andsingle-ended outputs. Balanced connections aremade via three-pin XLR connectors, whilesingle-ended connections are made via RCAconnectors.

When you have a choice, a balanced connectionwill offer slightly higher sound quality than asingle-ended connection.

USB Input

The USB input uses the squarish “B” type connectordesigned for computer peripheral devices. Therectangular “A” type connector at the other end ofthe cable is designed to plug directly into thecomputer itself.

4

The USB 1.1 standard specifies a maximum cablelength of 10 feet (3 meters). It is not recommendedto use extenders or hubs with the QB-9.

AyreLink Ports

The AyreLink communication system provides aconvenient way to control your audio system. Thereare two AyreLink ports on the rear panel of theQB-9 D/A converter. Each port has four contactsand contains both an input and an output. Bothports function identically and may be usedinterchangeably.

AyreLink connections are made with commonlyavailable two-line telephone line cords usingmodular (RJ-11) connectors. (These are the cordsthat connect the telephone set to the wall in manycountries.) They are readily available in differentlengths and various colors at most electronics stores.

Be sure to use two-line telephone cordsto make AyreLink connections. Thesecan be identified by the four goldcontacts on each connector. Single-line

5

cords with only two gold contacts willnot function in this application.

The linked components may bejoined in any convenient order.

The linked components should be connected indaisy-chain fashion, connecting each component toanother until all of the linked components have beenconnected.

When connecting the linkedcomponents to form a chain, be carefulnot to connect the two ends of thechain. Closing the chain to form a loopwill cause the AyreLink system not tofunction.

AC Power

The QB-9 may be plugged directly into anunswitched wall outlet. Although proprietary RFI(radio-frequency interference) filtering is built intothe USB D/A converter, in some situations an ACpower-line filter (such as those offered by Ayre) mayprovide additional sonic benefits.

As virtually all computers use switch-mode powersupplies that introduce unwanted RFI on the ACpower line, it may be beneficial to use an AC powerline filter for the computer and its accessories (e.g.,display monitor), many of which also utilizeswitch-mode power supplies.

6

Break-In

100 to 500 hours of musicplayed through the system will

ensure full break-in.

Due to the manufacturing processes used for theprinted circuit boards, wires, and capacitors, abreak-in period is necessary for the USB D/Aconverter to reach its full performance potential.

Configuring the Computer

No matter what operating system (OS) yourcomputer uses — Apple, Windows, or Linux —you’ll need to set up your computer to performseveral different tasks:

• Transferring music to your computer’s hard drive, either by converting the files from your CDcollection, commonly called “ripping”, or bypurchasing files that are downloaded via theinternet.

• Labeling the files you have transferred with thenames of the song, artist, album, et cetera, commonly called “tagging”. (Downloaded files willnormally already have the “tags” included.)

• Using a music player program to organize yourmusic collection and play it back.

• Optionally record music selections back onto CDsfor playback in your car or other places, commonlycalled “burning”.

• Optionally transfer part of your music collectionto a portable music player.

7

A few programs can perform all of these functions, for example iTunes (Apple and Windows), J.RiverMedia Center (Windows), and Windows MediaPlayer (Windows). Some users will prefer to use acombination of other specialized programs toperform these functions.

An introductory guide to setting up your computeris available at the Ayre website at:

8

Controls and

Operation

There are no controls on the front panel of the QB-9USB D/A converter. Instead the unit is controlledby your computer via the USB connection.

Display

The display has a green “Standby” LED thatindicates that the unit is connected to AC power.

When in standby mode, all critical internalcircuitry remains powered. This ensures optimalsound quality with a minimum of warm-up time.

When your computer is powered on, the QB-9 willalso enter the “Operate” mode. The display will

9

indicate “- - -” to show it is ready to receive audiodata. As the music file begins to play, the displaywill indicate the sample rate in kHz (e.g., “96”).When the music file stops, the display will revert to“- - -”. Turning the computer off will also place theQB-9 back in “Standby” mode.

Other operating modes are also available. Pleaserefer to the chapter “Optimization andCustomization ” for additional information.

AyreLink

The AyreLink communication system providesintegrated control functions for your audio system.Linked components will turn on automatically, andother features are also available.

Operate

When your computer turns on the QB-9 D/Aconverter, it will in turn automatically turn on allother linked components that are further down thesignal chain, including the preamplifier and poweramplifier.

A properly configured linked preamplifier will alsoautomatically switch to the designated input whenthe QB-9 is turned on.

Standby

As the QB-9 is controlled by your computer, itcannot be used to turn off an entire linked system.

10

Other linked components may be used to turn offthe entire audio system, including the QB-9.Please refer to the owner’s manual of the othercomponents utilizing the AyreLink system.

Display Brightness

There is no directly accessible brightness control forthe display on the QB-9. However the display maybe turned off if so desired. Please refer to the chapter“Optimization and Customization”.

Changing the brightness level on the display ofother linked components will cause a matchingchange in all linked components, including theQB-9 D/A converter.

11

Optimization and

Customization

The Ayre QB-9 is configured at the factory toprovide the best performance for a typicalinstallation. In certain situations you may wish tochange the default configuration for optimalperformance in your system, using small toggleswitches on the rear of the unit.

The default configuration settings (all switches inthe “up” position) will work best for the vastmajority of users.

Digital Filter

The digital filter of the Ayre QB-9 features twouser-selectable algorithms. A selector switch islocated on the rear panel. One algorithm producesgreater accuracy in the time domain and is labeled“Listen”. The other algorithm produces greateraccuracy in the frequency domain and is labeled“Measure”.

Normally the selector switch is set to the “Listen”position when listening to music. However somelisteners may prefer the additional high-frequencyenergy provided by the “Measure” position.

12

Power Mode

The default configuration of the QB-9 turns theD/A converter on when the computer is turned on.This works well when the computer is primarilydedicated as a music server. However, in some casesthe computer may be used for a wide variety of tasksby multiple users.

Setting the small toggle switch to “Power B” willchange the power-on behavior of the QB-9. In thiscase, the unit will not leave the “Standby” modewhen the computer is turned on. Instead it willenter the “Operate” mode when a music playersoftware application plays a music file.

When the music file has ended, the QB-9 willremain in the “Operate” mode for one minute. Thiswill allow time to select a different music file if sodesired. After this time (or if the computer is turnedoff), the D/A converter will revert to “Standby”mode.

Display

There are two methods available to control theoperation of the front-panel display. The brightnessmay be controlled via the AyreLink communicationsystem, or the display may be turned off altogetherwith a switch on the rear panel.

13

Display Brightness

The AyreLink communication system can controlthe brightness level of the display on the QB-9.

Changing the brightness level on the display ofother linked components will cause a matchingchange in all linked components, including theQB-9 D/A converter.

Display Off

The front panel display of the QB-9 may be turnedoff if so desired. Set the small toggle switch to “DispOff”, and only one small blue LED will illuminate.

The blue LED will follow the behavior describedunder the section “Power Mode” above. Whenset to “Power A”, the LED will light when thecomputer is turned on. When set to “Power B”,the LED will light only when the QB-9 is receivinga music signal.

In either power mode, when the D/A converter firstreceives an audio signal it will display the samplerate of the music file for two seconds and then revertto the single blue LED. Similarly, if the sample ratechanges it will also display the new sample rate fortwo seconds.
