Each year, the Australian Youth Orchestra presents ten training programs across metropolitan and regional Australia, ranging from orchestral fellowships, to tailored regional residencies for chamber ensembles, seasons by the Australian Youth Orchestra, or the intense environment of over 230 young musicians-in-residence at AYO National Music Camp.

The Australian Youth Orchestra is the flagship ensemble of the organisation ‘Australian Youth Orchestra’. Founded in 1948, it has attained an international reputation as one of the world’s most prestigious and innovative orchestral training organisations.

Since its first performance in 1957, the Australian Youth Orchestra has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals, fulfilling the role of cultural ambassador for Australia on no fewer than 20 international tours.

Aged up to 25 years, orchestra members are selected through a highly competitive annual audition process and represent the best young musical talent in the nation.

The orchestra regularly attracts superlatives from the ranks of the international music press, confirming its high standing throughout the world.

In 2010 the AYO performed in China and Europe under the direction of Sir Mark Elder. The orchestra’s performance at the BBC Proms in London on that tour was acclaimed by critics and broadcast on BBC Television. The orchestra will again tour to Europe in 2013 with celebrated conductor Christoph Eschenbach and Grammy award winning violinist Joshua Bell.

This July the orchestra received critical and audience acclaim for their performance at Queensland Performing Arts Centre of An Alpine Symphony under the baton of Simone Young and Wagner’s Brünnhilde’s Immolation scene with soprano Lisa Gasteen. Last year the orchestra gave the world premiere of Carl Vine’s Violin Concerto at the Sydney Opera House in July with soloist, Dene Olding and conductor, Thomas Dausgaard.

Other recent landmark appearances include performances of Britten’s opera Peter Grimes with the West Australian Opera at the Perth International Arts Festival, the award-winning Beethoven cycle conducted by John Nelson at the Adelaide Festival Centre, and a concert performance of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde at the Queensland Music Festival.

Today, countless AYO alumni are members of some of the finest professional orchestras worldwide.

AYO REGIONAL RESIDENCIES

The AYO Regional Residencies program encourages development of chamber music skills and, this year, provides a unique and invaluable opportunity for a String Quartet and a Brass Quintet to experience life as a touring ensemble.

This year, the AYO String Quartet has come together to work intensively under the guidance of specialist string tutors, Michele Walsh and Patricia Pollett. During their two week residency, the Quartet will explore challenging repertoire, and share their knowledge and expertise with members of the local community.
