Volume 2012 Issue 1 January 2012
Commodores Report: BILL BRAYTON Happy New Year! I am proud to serve as your Commodore as Anacapa Yacht Club enters its 45P
thP year. This club has been through
many changes and after all these years it’s still the coolest yacht club in the harbor. I am looking forward to all the events, races and trips to the islands that 2012 will bring. Last year we worked hard on increasing AYC membership. My personal goal was to increase membership by twenty five percent. We gained 13 new members. That’s just a touch over twenty five percent. This is great! However we also lost a few members as well. I know in these lean times that yacht club membership can’t always be a priority for some and we have so much to offer. To the racers we offer zero entry fees for most races hosted by AYC. To the cruiser we offer a full schedule of well attended weekend and extended cruises. The camaraderie of all these events makes AYC a very boater friendly club. Let your friends and dock neighbors know that we are alive and well! I am also looking forward to making some improvements around the clubhouse in the coming year. The A/V system is going to be simplified over the next couple of months. My vision is to have the system be easy enough to understand that any one of us can turn on the TV, play music, play a movie and turn the microphone on without a college degree in electronics engineering. I am also committed to getting our VHF system up and running smoothly. I believe that it’s important to be able to communicate with the race committee, racers and boaters on the water that may want a radio check as well. As I write this it’s the eve of New Years Eve. The day before Jan 1 P
stP. We have 3 boats that have already left for Coches Prietos anchorage on Santa Cruz
Island and we have 2 or maybe 3 more boats leaving tomorrow morning. After getting rained out last year, many of the AYC cruisers are looking forward to the fantastic weather forecast for the weekend. This New Years trip is quickly becoming an annual AYC tradition. The weather is just too good this time of year. (Well most years anyway.) The participation of the club members and their enthusiasm is inspiring to me. Share these stories with other folks that may be looking for someone to cruise to the islands with. They may be future AYC members. In closing I would like to say how proud I am to represent Anacapa Yacht Club and all the wonderful members. If you have any questions or comments feel free to send me an email at [email protected] Sea you at the club or on the water, Commodore 2012 Bill Brayton

Happy New Year all AYC members and friends: I look forward to being your Vice Commodore for 2012. For those of you who don't know me (only a few, I hope), my wife, Cherri and I have been members of AYC since 2008 and have actively campaigned our race boat Maine Squeeze, a Schock 35' since 2007. We have enjoyed our racing and cruising in Channel Islands and look forward to time on the water in 2012 with more focus on cruising. There is still much we have not seen or done in our local waters and beyond. This New Year promises to be full of great boating and social activities, the calendar is already filling up fast. We are starting off with a BANG at Coches Prietos anchorage with several AYC boats celebrating the incoming New Year. While the mercury is dipping below freezing in most areas of the country we are able to enjoy our beautiful backyard in comfort. Our Friday night dinners resume on January 6P
thP with John and Suzy Koester preparing several types of homemade mouth watering chili and
fixins, this is their first dinner so please come out and show your support. On Friday January 13 P
thP Joe and Joanne will be treating us to a
delicious meal. As usual the club opens the bar at 6:30 and dinner is around 7PM. On Friday January 27P
thP Cherri and I will be hosting
dinner, not sure what we have planned for the menu yet, but the goal is to make it interesting enough to attract all our members and friends down to the club for good food and fun. Hold onto your hat cause on Saturday January 21P
stP is our Commodores Ball! It is being held at Pierpont Inn in Ventura.
http://www.pierpontinn.com/ Bill Brayton blocked off several rooms for AYC and friends at $85 rate. Don’t forget to send your invite back to Tina with your choice of food and include a check for $70/person to Anacapa Yacht Club. For those of you that have been there before you know this is a lot of fun and for those of you that have not I urge you to come along, bring your dancing shoes and enjoy! Lastly, AYC does not exist without its members and we want and need your input and support. If there is any activity you think would be beneficial to our club the community or our members please don't hesitate to pass it along to myself or one of our board members all suggestions are welcome. For more information on any social activities please contact me by phone or email. (805) 469-1936 or [email protected]. As always I look forward to seeing you at the club and on the water. RReeaarr CCoommmmooddoorreess RReeppoorrtt:: JJooee UUnnddeerrwwoooodd The New Year is finally upon us, let me take this time to give Doug Fajardo a huge thank you for all the hard work being our Rear Commodore for the last four years. As many of you know Anacapa Yacht Club has become the premier racing club in the Channel Islands Harbor impart due to Doug’s leadership in running and organizing along side our race committee chairman, Gene Beville. I am sure proud of what has been accomplished. We host more than 40 races per year. With that said I sure have some big shoes to fill. For those of you who don’t know me yet, let me introduce myself. My name is Joe Underwood, my wife Joanne and I joined AYC in 2006 and we have been active members since we joined. I am pleased to say that I served the club as Vice Commodore in 2008, and went on to be Commodore in 2009. Since that time, I became a board member in 2010 and was voted to be the Cruising Director for 2011. I have a long history of being involved in the yachting community thanks in part to my beloved Grandparents, who were active in the yachting community. My Grandfather served as Commodore of California Yacht Club in 1972. Both my Grandparents were active in sailing, power cruising, log racing and sport fishing. I became active in sailing at a young age and took part in several yacht clubs down south; California Yacht Club, San Diego Yacht Club, Shark Island Yacht Club and the famous Balboa Angling Club. I had a great Jr. year in sport fishing and won the Jr. of the year back to back in 1984-85, for catching marlins in both of those years in local waters off the east end of Catalina. Being bitten by the water bug at a young age, I have always desired to be involved in the yachting community and I must say that I am a proud member of Anacapa Yacht Club. I am looking forward to my new roll as Rear Commodore and you have my pledge that I will do my best to continue the successes that Doug Fajardo has brought and I plan to bring to the table some new ideas that will build on our racing and cruising activities. We have an outstanding line up for 2012 that is sure to bring great ideas and build on the successes of our 2011 Commodore Randy Alcorn. We have so many great races, cruises and in the club house parties, socials and dinners, we are sure to have some great times whether we are out on the water or in the club house. So cheers to the start of a great year and now it’s time to get this party started. One of the first things that I will be implementing as Rear Commodore is a biweekly email / news letter that will highlight the racing and cruising activities to make sure that everyone is informed of what on-the-water events are happening. The news letter / email will be called Out On The Water with AYC and will include a column called the Racers Edge and Cruising the Channel Islands, the articles will include racing tips from the pros and cruising tips from our fleet of avid cruisers/racers and each month I would like to do a quick synopsis of one of the club boats for a boat of the month article. So look for this new publication in your email on the 1st and 15th of every month. Kicking off the New Year with a club cruise out at the famous Coches Prietos for the New Years weekend. By the time this newsletter goes out the club will have already been on it’s first cruise out to the islands, so lets keep our fingers crossed that the weather was good and that the cruise was out of this world... Kicking off the racing for the New Year is the AYC / PCYC TGIS Winter series #2 race. The skippers meeting will be at the AYC Club House at 1100hrs on Sunday January 8th, so don’t miss the first race of the year with AYC...

January 22nd, AYC is hosting the race management seminar; this is your opportunity to learn more about the way races are run, this is a must for all racers, knowing the rules can give you a competitive edge against you competition.... Don’t miss out... Sunday January 29th, AYC / PCYC TGIS Winter series #3 race. The skippers meeting will be at the AYC Club House at 1100hrs. Once again, I thank you all for the opportunity to serve the club, I look forward to seeing all of you out doing what we love, being out on the water... For more information on any on-the-water activities please contact me by phone or email. (805) 529-0934 or [email protected] Joe Underwood Rear Commodore / Staff Commodore / Cruise Director

Custom Embroidery After returning from a cruising season in Mexico, Lisa Rizzo opened a small Custom Embroidery Shop in Ventura Harbor in July 2004. It was close to her home on the water and her best customers were boaters, the Yacht Clubs, and Boat Yards. In the past 7 years she has expanded and provides embroidery and printed t-shirts for many of the local businesses.
Lisa approaches your project as a collaboration. If you want your boat name embroidered on a jacket, you choose the font, the thread colors, the size, and the location. You can choose a design from a massive book or provide her with a picture of your boat or the name on your boat and she will reproduce it in beautiful embroidery.
![Page 6: AYC January Main Sheet](https://reader038.vdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022100501/568c0e6a1a28ab955a906235/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
She believes her successful business is due to her belief that Customer Satisfaction is the #1 priority. You can purchase items from her catalogs of quality apparel or provide her with an item. A minimum order is 1 item; which is unlike many of her competitors. In addition, Custom Embroidery now offers printed t-shirts. A sailor at heart, she is active in the sailing community. She donates items to raffles, and provides embroidery to the clubs for trophy’s. Stop in to browse the showroom, check out the designs she has created for others, or just to chat about sailing – Lisa’s favorite sport.
