Cor. New York Sun.1Good Friday is observed as a sort of May

festival Thi3 year, as usual, the Paseo delas Flores (Flower Promenade) was heldalong the Viga, the picturesque canal whichstretches away between willows and poplarsto the far-fame- d floating gardens of theancient Aztecs. The scene along the his-toric causeway was astonishing to foreign-ers, and as charmingly peculiar as it wastypical of a poetic and pleasure-lovin- g peo-ple. They are early risers in this land ofthe sun, where breakfast is not taken tillmidday, and everybody is enjoying a Ionssiesta during those hour; when Americansare most actively at work. At sunrise theViga and its boulevard were throngedwith the aristocracy of the city and a vastconcourse of plebeians and Indians. By7 o'clock the festivities were at theirheight For miles along the tree-line- d

avenue a constant procession of vehicles, horsemen, and pedestrians packed the spacebetween green booths on either side, whilethe canal was crowded with canoes and Venet-

ian-like gondolas. Everything imaginableon wheels was here the stately closed car-riage of the Mexican millionaire, open ba-rouches, coupes, victorias, dog carts, wagon-ettes, even velocipedes and tricycles, whilethousands of horseman gallopad gayly be-

tween. The severe simplicity of the Ger-man and English style of the riding habitcontrasted well with the gorgeou ly capar-isoned, silver-decke- d equestrian?. Most othe ladies were dressed in what we woii"consider fuU ball or opera costume palsilks or satins, no wraps or covering for tLhead, except now and then a lace mantillr .

draped Spanish fashion, upon the back hair, and a wealth of jewels such as the fair Mexcanas are famous for.

Although the laws of propriety are sorigorously strict that a gentleman may netride in the same carriage with "the lady twhom he is betrothed, yet flirting is openlyindulged in to an extent which would putto blush New York, Chicago, or San Fran-cisco. Following a senorita up and downthe promenade and staring intently in herface is an accepted mode of compliment here, doubtless gratifying to the young lady, but sometimes dangerous to the adorer ifshe happens to have others equaUV Quotedand it not infrequently harTobns that duels

The supreme authority shouldbe conferred upon Rajah Brooke, whose father did more to put downpiracy in the Eastern Archipelagothan any other authority or power.Indeed, it was entirely owing to thegreat ability and zeal of the Brookes, father and soiij in this matter thatrendered the operations of the NorthBorneo Company possible. fBufdette In Brooklyn Eage."Young Funnyman" No, I did not de-

When aCorrespondent sands me anything funnierthan my own stuff, I do decline to insert itover the correspondent's name. But I donot, as you assert, reject it in a mean spiritof petty jealousy and envy. Ob, no; I stealit. I chuck it right into my own funnycolumn, as one of my own. I appropriateall the funny things sent in by funny corre-spondents jusf as calmly, as the busine33manager appropriates the stamps inclosedfor the return of the manuscript that neverreturns. Me and the business manager hassoft things of it, speaking after the Boa-tone- se

But I declined to publish a libal upon thatgood old quilt and the dear good old womanwho made it. There ia no guile in the womanor the quilt. The quilt is no patchworkfraud and comforter. It isn't one of thesethings that seem to weigh ninety poundswhen you first crawl under it, and let youwake up in the night, shivering at the rateof sixty-fiv- e miles a minute, frozen stiff aan introduction from chin to instep, to findforty-fiv- e pounds of cotton In each end ofthe comforter and nothing in the middle, while th old thing strides you like a pair ofgreat saddle bags.

And these "old women" quilts are nevermade scant, either, like these delusions thatgrace the guest chamber, that ar narrow'in one direction and short in the other, sothat you have to coil up like a snake to get

binder them. . Nor is it one of these torm-jnt-er- s

with always a small hole torn in them, into the which, every time you turn youthrust a toe and either dislocate your toe ortear the hole bigger. Nor is it one ofthese terrors, a quilt so much longer than itis wide that if you draw it over you length-wise you feel as though you were ooveredwith a dress brail or the bell cord, anl ifyou twist it around sideways you thi2,kare trying to cover with a "whole

The Company has every facility for do-

ing all the work in the Islands. Amaceration mill has just been completedfor the Hamakua mill, and will beshipped next week. This new processmeets with great favor, and orders havecome in so fast that the Company hasbeen compelled to refuse a number. Those of the planters who have been re-

fused have sent their orders away, asthey are anxious to get the new processin place in time for the next grinding. As stated above, the Company can do allthe work of the Islands, but when itcomes pouring in as it has done lately,it is impossible to fill all orders simul-taneously. Probably when the price of amaceration mill made here and abroadis compared, those who were hi sucha hurry to send away their orders maywish they had not done so. By theAlameda, due on Saturday, anotherbatch of skilled workmen are expectedor the Works.

JIT BIRTHPLACE IN THE STATE OF MAIXE.I Last week I visited my birthplace in theI state of Maine. I waited thirty years fori the public to visit it, and as there didn'tI seem to be much of a rush this spring, II thought I would go and visit it nvyself. II was telling a friend the other day that thaI public did not seem to manifest the interestI in my birthplace that I thought '.t ought to,I and he said I ought not to mind that.i 'Just wait," said he, "till the people of the1 United States have an opportunity to visit

your tomb, and you will be surprised to see; 'how they will run excursion trains up there: to Moosehead lake, or wherever you plant

i yourself. It will be a perfect picnic. Your- hold on the American people, "William, is

wonderful, but your death would S2em toassure It, and kind of crystallize the affectionnow existing, but still in a nebulous andgummy state."

i A man ought not to criticise hi3 birthplace,I presume, and yet, if I were to do it all overagain, I do not know whether I would selectthat particular spot or not. Sometimes I

'; think I would not. And yet, what memoriest; cluster about that old house! There was the

place where I first met my parents. It wasat that time that an acquaintance sprangup which has ripened in later years into

3 mutual respect and esteem. It was thereI that what might be called a casual meeting

took place, that has, under the alchemy of1 resistless years, turned to golden links, form--S

tn a pleasant but powerful bond of unionbetween my parents and myself. For thatreason I hope to be spared to my parents formany years to come.

Many old memories now cluster about that

VACUUM PUMl'Spartnership under the firm name of BLAKE BOILER, FEED, LIGHT SERVICE and

POSTMASTER AT LARAMIE CITT.Here on the banks of the raging Piscata-

quis, where winter lingers in the lap ofspring till it occasions a good deal of talk, there began a career which has been thewonder and admiration of every vigilancecommittee west of the .turbulent 3Iissouri.

There on that spot, with no inheritance butft predisposition to premature baldness and abitter hatred of rum ; with no personal prop-erty but a misfit suspender and a stonebruise, began a life history which ha3 neverceased to be a warning to people who sellgroceries on credit.

It should teach the youth of this youngland what glorious possibilities may lie con-cealed in the rough and tough bosom of thereluctant present. It shows how steady per-severance and a good appetite will alwayswin in the end. It teaches U3 that wealth isnot indispensable, and that if we live as weshould, draw out of politics at the propertime, and die a few days before the publicabsolutely demand it, the matter of ourbirthplace will not be considered.

StilL my birthplace is all right as a birth-place. It was a good, quiet place in whichto be born. All the old neighbors said thatShirley was a very quiet place up to thetime I was born there, and when I took myparents by the hand and gently led themaway in the spring of '53, saying, "Parents, this is no place for us," it again becamequiet.

It is the only birthplace I have, however, and I hope that all the readers will feal per-fectly free to go there any time and visit it,and carry their dinner as I did. Extrava-gant cordiality and overflowing hospitalityBare always kept my birthplace back.

'T noticed that there was a big patch offeathers missing from the rooster's back, and that they were pi etty well thinned outcn his neck and one wing. I asked thefarmer what had cauxnl the damage.

"'Uig chicken hawk,' said the farmer."ll::twas the nicest little fight I ever see.Ll-- 1 week one of the biggest Lawks that everliv.- - l was hangin' round here, sailin' aboutmo i j of the time with his eye on my barn-yir-L

A Magnetic Telephone.Inter Ocean.

Mr. T. H. Brown, or Port Worth, Tex,Las perfected a magnetic telephone and tele-graph, which doe3 away with batteries ofany kind. It was tested over thirty-eig-ht

mile of wire and proved perfectly satis-factory to telegraph men present, both as atelephone and telegraph.

The instrument used was composed oftwo ounce3 of wire and a half pound ofsteel, and can be made for 25 cents. Thetransmitter Is simply a horse --shoe magnet, either pole being covered with fine wire, coiled carefully. The armature Is a disk osteed, against which the voice U thrown, transmitted through the magnet to the wire. The receiver is similar, with smaller mag-net. H is claimed by the inventor that hecan transmit the voice around the world oracross the Atlantic ocean, there " being nolimit to distance, all that is necessary beingthe increase in size of magnsL
