Our Amazing May – A blessing from God!
May brings a host of wonderful events at Trinity. Opportunities for us to celebrate our new life in the Risen
Christ and opportunities for us to support, encourage and worship with other brothers and sisters who are not
members at Trinity. We see God at work in our midst and we ask Him to help us serve our neighbors, communi-
ties and beyond. What joy it is to be counted among the believers at Trinity Burr Ridge!
May 5: On May 5th
we are the host congregation for the Northern Illinois District, Lutheran Church Missouri
Synod worship service. The Pastor’s Conference is taking place at the William Tell in Countryside and at 7:00PM
we will host the Divine Service. Praise God for our opportunity to serve!
May 7: The National Day of Prayer. Come to Trinity at 7:00 PM for a special time of prayer for our nation and
our community. We will meet in the church library. Praise God for our opportunity to pray for one another!
May 10: Mother’s day! This Sunday is an excellent opportunity for you to bring mom to church and worship as
a family. God gives us our parents as blessings to us. We recognize the importance of our mother and we thank
God for her. Praise God for our opportunity to thank God for our moms!
May 14: Ascension Day! Forty days after the Resurrection, we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord. This year
Hope Lutheran Church, Countryside and Trinity, Burr Ridge will join together at Trinity for a special worship
service at 7:00 PM. Combined choirs will sing and refreshments will follow worship. Praise God for the oppor-
tunity to worship with our brothers and sisters of Hope congregation!
May 24: The Day of Pentecost! Join us for worship on this special festival day. Jesus has Ascended but He does
not leave us alone! The Holy Spirit, the power from on high, is poured out upon the church. We are reminded
that in our Holy Baptism, we receive the same Spirit! Praise God for this opportunity to celebrate the Gift of the
Holy Spirit!
May 30: Trinity Lutheran School graduation day! Of course this is a special day… we honor the academic
achievements of our students and celebrate the opportunity to thank God for Christian education. Our children
are precious lambs of God and are very important to Him. Praise God for this opportunity to see godly young
men and women complete their studies at Trinity Lutheran School.
May 31: The Holy Trinity! On this day we worship and celebrate the Holy Trinity. Our congregation is not
named for any man or woman, but takes its name from the One True God whom we worship; Father, Son and
Holy Spirit. Three distinct persons, One amazing God! Praise God for this opportunity to worship and celebrate
the Holy Trinity!
How could our May not be blessed? In Christ,
For with You is the fountain of life; in Your Light we see light. Psalm 36:9

Stewardship—”Sing A New Song” "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and
make music in your heart to the Lord." Ephesians 5:19
A family heard a bird singing in their yard. The song differed from the
songs of birds they knew in their area. They brought out binoculars and a
birding guide to locate and identify the bird. They stood, watched, and lis-
tened. Amid the crows' caws and doves coos, the new bird offered a trilling
melody.
Because Christ rules our hearts, we, too, sing a song different from the curses and complaints of the world around
us. Christ gave us new life in His death and resurrection, saving us form our sins. The Holy Spirit transformed us
into new creatures -- children of God -- in the waters of Holy Baptism. The Spirit works new life in us that lifts our
hearts and opens our voices to God.
In response to our new life, we sing to others about God's saving grace. Strengthened with the Spirit's inspiration,
we offer the world the beautiful song of the Gospel. God promises us eternal life with Him, where He will give us
new songs to sing, songs that joyfully proclaim God's free salvation through Christ. That's something to sing about!
Prayer: Holy God, thank You for putting a new song of salvation in our hearts and on our lips. Give us courage to
share Your song with those who don't know You. Keep our voices singing Your praises all of our days. Amen.

Commemoration Biographies
May 2 Athanasius of Alexandria Athanasius was born in Alexandria in Egypt in A.D. 295. He served as a church leader in a time of great
controversy and ecclesiastical disagreements. At the Council of Nicaea in 325, he defended Christian orthodoxy against the proponents of the Arian
heresy, which denied the full divinity of Jesus Christ. During his 45-year tenure as bishop of Alexandria, Athanasius wrote numerous works that
defended the orthodox teaching. His enemies had him exiled five times; on two occasions he was almost murdered. Yet Athanasius remained stead-
fast and ended his days restored fully to his church responsibilities. The Athanasian Creed, though not composed by Athanasius, is named in his
honor because it confesses the doctrinal orthodoxy he championed throughout his life.
May 4 Friedrich Wyneken, Pastor and Missionary Friedrich Wyneken is one of the founding fathers of The Lutheran Church--Missouri
Synod, along with C.F.W. Walther and Wilhelm Sihler. Born in 1810 in Germany, he came to Baltimore in 1838 and shortly thereafter accepted a
call to be the pastor of congregations in Friedheim and Fort Wayne, Indiana. Supported by Wilhelm Loehe's mission society, Wyneken served as an
itinerant missionary in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan, particularly among Native Americans. Together with Loehe and Sihler, he founded Concordia
Theological Seminary in 1846 in Fort Wayne, Ind. He later served as the second president of the LCMS during a period of significant growth (1850-
64). His leadership strongly influenced the confessional character of the LCMS and its commitment to an authentic Lutheran witness.
May 5 Frederick the Wise Frederick the Wise, elector of Saxony from 1486 to 1525, was Martin Luther's sovereign in the early years of the
Reformation. Were it not for Frederick, there might not have been a Lutheran Reformation. Born in Torgau in 1463, he became so well known for
his skill in political diplomacy and his sense of justice and fairness that he was called "the Wise" by his subjects. Though he never met Luther, Freder-
ick repeatedly protected and provided for him. In all likelihood he saved the reformer from a martyr's fate. Frederick refused the pope's demand to
extradite Luther to Rome for a heresy trial in 1518. When Emperor Charles V declared Luther an outlaw in 1521 at the Diet of Worms, Frederick
provided sanctuary for Luther at the Wartburg castle. On his deathbed, Frederick received the Lord's Supper in both kinds--a clear confession of the
evangelical faith.
May 7 C.F.W. Walther Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm Walther (1811-87), the father of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, served as its first presi-
dent from 1847 to 1850 and then again from 1864 to 1878. In 1839 he emigrated from Saxony, Germany, with other Lutherans, who settled in Mis-
souri. He served as pastor of several congregations in St. Louis, founded Concordia Seminary, and in 1847 was instrumental in the formation of the
LCMS (then called the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States). Walther worked tirelessly to promote confessional Luther-
an teaching and doctrinal agreement among all Lutherans in the United States. He was a prolific writer and speaker. Among his most influential
works are Church and Ministry and The Proper Distinction between Law and Gospel.
May 9 Job, Patriarch Job was a blameless and upright man who came from Uz (Job 1:1), a land northeast of Canaan. The Book of Job examines
the depths of his faith, which was severely tested through the sufferings God permitted. Despite the sudden death of his ten children and the loss of
all his wealth and his health, Job refused to curse God: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return; the LORD gave, and the
LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD" (1:21). Still, in the midst of his tribulations Job questioned the meaning and purpose of
suffering to the point of asserting his own righteousness (34:5- 6). Finally, the Lord revealed that a man cannot know the mysteries of God (chapters
38-41). Job's faith in his Redeemer and the resurrection prevailed (19:25-27). In the end the Lord restored his wealth and blessed him with another
seven sons and three daughters.
May 11 Cyril and Methodius, Missionaries to the Slavs Cyril (826-69) and Methodius (c. 815-85) were brothers who came from a Greek
family in Thessalonica. The younger brother took the name "Cyril" when he became a monk in 868. After ordination, Cyril became librarian at the
church of Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia) in Constantinople. In 862 the brothers were sent by the emperor as missionaries to what is now the Czech
republic, where they taught in the native Slavic tongue. Cyril invented the alphabet today know today as "Cyrillic," which provided a written lan-
guage for the liturgy and Scriptures for the Slavic peoples. This use of the vernacular established an important principle for evangelical missions.
May 21 Constantine, Emperor, and Helena, his mother Constantine I served as Roman Emperor from A.D. 306 to 337. During his reign
the persecution of Christians was forbidden by the Edict of Milan in 312, and ultimately the faith gained full imperial support. Constantine took an
active interest in the life and teachings of the church and called the Council of Nicaea in 325 at which orthodox Christianity was defined and defend-
ed. His mother, Helena (ca. 255-329), strongly influenced Constantine. Her great interest in locating the holy sites of the Christian faith led her to
become one of the first Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land. Her research led to the identification of Biblical locations in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and
beyond, which are still maintained as places of worship today.
May 24 Esther Esther is the heroine of the biblical book that bears her name. Her Jewish name was Hadassah, which means "myrtle." Her beau-
ty, charm, and courage served her well as queen to King Ahasuerus. In that role she was able to save her people from the mass extermination that
Haman, the king's chief advisor, had planned (2:19--4:17). Esther's efforts to uncover the plot resulted in the hanging of Haman on the very same
gallows that he had built for Mordecai, her uncle and guardian. Then the king named Mordecai minister of state in Haman's place. This story is an
example of how God intervenes on behalf of his people to deliver them from evil, as here through Esther he preserved the Old Testament people
through whom the Messiah would come. May 25 The Venerable Bede Bede (673-735) was the last of the early church fathers and the first to compile the history of the English church.
Born in Northumbria, Bede was given by his parents to a monastery in Northern England at the age of seven. The most learned man of his time, he
was a prolific writer of history, whose careful use of sources provided a model for historians in the Middle Ages. Known best for his book, The Ec-
clesiastical History of the English People, he was also a profound interpreter of Scripture; his commentaries are still fresh today. His most famous
disciple, Cuthbert, reported that Bede was working on a translation of John's Gospel into English when death came, and that he died with the words
of the Gloria Patri on his lips. He received the title "Venerable" within two generations of his death and is buried in Durham Cathedral as one of
England's greatest saints.

I’m thankful to the parents for trusting Trinity with your children’s education. We know with the accreditation now finished we have a written plan for improvement over the next five years.
Thought of the Month: Isn’t it ironic:
-We ignore the ones that adore us
-We adore the ones who ignore us
-Love the ones who hurt us
-Hurt the ones who love us
Did You Know? Leonardo da Vinci’s last words were: “I have offended God and mankind. My work did not reach the quality it should have.”

May Parish Education—Bible Study
May Library News For years we’ve been writing about books for you to enjoy reading. At times we did recommend some DVDs. In
fact, last month the entire featured list was “movies” about Jesus’ life and death and resurrection.
Since we can learn a lesson and “read” a story visually, we’re again presenting a list of DVDs. These are the ones pur-
chased or donated so far in 2015 to our library. (Thank you Donors!)
Celery Night Fever—A Lesson in Forgiveness
Beauty and the Beet—A Lesson in Unconditional Love
It’s a Meaningful Life (2 copies) - A Lesson in Being Content
Jonah—Big Ideas—A Lesson in Second Chances
Junior’s Giants—Envy Thou Not
Junior’s Giants—Anger’s Everywhere
Children’s Heroes—Stories of 6 Old Testament examples
Sugar Creek Gang—Episode #3… Revival Villains
(Episode #2—The Great Canoe Fish & Episode #1—Swamp Robber can be found on the regular shelf)
Gideon—Tuba Warrior (2 copies)
Happy Together! - Three stories about family, friendship, and faith
These are just our “new” selections. Take a look at our 2 Children’s shelves with VeggieTales on one shelf and all oth-
ers on the second one... plus a Family shelf. We hope some title catches your eye.
Please use the SIGN OUT/IN sheet on the shelf and return in a week or two. Enjoy!!

Music Notes IF CHRIST HAD NOT BEEN RAISSED FROM DEATH OUR FAITH
WOULD BE IN VAIN,
OUR PREACHING BUT A WASTE OF BREATH, OUR SIN AND
GUILT REMAIN.
BUT NOW THE LORD IS RISEN INDEED; HE RULES IN EARTH
AND HEAVEN:
HIS GOSPEL MEETS A WORLD OF NEED--IN CHRIST WE ARE FOR-
GIVEN.
IF CHRIST STILL LAY WITHIN THE TOMB THEN DEATH WOULD
BE THE END,
AND WE SHOULD FACE OUR FINAL DOOM WITH NEITHER
GUIDE NOR FRIEND.
BUT NOW THE SAVIOR IS RAISED UP, SO WHEN A CHRISTIAN
DIES
WE MOURN, YET LOOK TO GOD IN HOPE--IN CHRIST THE SAINTS ARISE! (LSB 486: stanzas 1 & 2)
As I greet you now in May, I am encouraged by the warmer weather, the green grass, the budding trees. From a nat-
ural standpoint, it reminds me of new life. AND CHRIST HAS GIVEN US THAT NEW LIFE BY HIS GLORI-
OUS RESURRRECTION FROM THE DEAD, which we celebrated this past April 5th! This month, we will cele-
brate his Ascension into heaven with a special service on Thursday, May 14th at 7pm here at Trinity. Our Sanctuary
Choir will be joined by the adult choir from Hope, Countryside, and our children's choirs will also participate in
that service. All that said, here is the music schedule for May, 2015:
Sunday, May 3 - The Fifth Sunday of Easter - 8:30am - JOYFUL NOTES CHOIR
Sunday, May 10- The Sixth Sunday of Easter - 8:30am - SANCTUARY CHOIR
Thursday, May 14 - The Ascension of our Lord - 7pm - SANCTUARY CHOIR AND CHILDREN'S CHOIRS
Sunday, May 17 - The Seventh Sunday of Easter - 8:30am - BELL CHOIR
Sunday, May 24 - The Day of Pentecost - 8:30am - SANCTUARY CHOIR WITH BRASS AND TIMPANI
Sunday, May 31 - The Holy Trinity - 8:30am - SANCTUARY CHOIR
IF CHRIST HAS NOT BEEN TRULY RAISED HIS CHURCH WOULD LIVE A LIE;
HIS NAME SHOULD NEVERMORE BE PRAISED, HIS WORDS DESERVE TO DIE.
BUT NOW OUR GREAT REDEEMER LIVES; THROUGH HIM WE ARE RESTORED;
HIS WORD ENDURES, HIS CHURCH REVIVES IN CHRIST, OUR RISEN LORD. (LSB 486: stanza 3)
In the Name of our Risen and Ascended Lord,
Howard Eggert, Director of Music (liturgical/traditional)

GREETINGS FROM THE LADIES AID!
Spring is in the air and the Ladies Aid is gearing up for our Annual Salad Luncheon. We are almost sold out and have a few
tickets remaining. Please contact Dani Eggert (630) 325-5109 today if you are interested in attending. It is a great afternoon
out filled with fellowship, a HUGE Bake Sale, a beautiful Silent Auction and Door Prizes galore! Our special raffle basket
contains over 20 Tastefully Simple items that our one lucky winner will enjoy! This year’s theme is “Shopping” which we
know all ladies love to do! We hope to see you on May 20 at 12:00 p.m. sharp!
We have already decided that 10% of our proceeds from this year’s luncheon will be sent to those families devastated by the
April tornado. It will be sent to Lutheran Child and Family Services for them to distribute where they think is the greatest
need. At this time, we cannot say how much will be sent as the luncheon is not over. As soon as we know the amount, we
will let you know.
Rob Grady visited our April meeting to discuss the upcoming Rummage Sale. The Ladies Aid will work hand in hand
with our Youth to prepare for the sale which is held in the school gymnasium the first weekend in August. Start cleaning
out those closets, basements, garages, etc. We will begin collecting items in June. Large items can be picked up by contact-
ing Rob Grady (708) 839-1200 x6. We love working with our Youth and look forward to a successful sale.
Thank you to all of the boards who kept our new kitchen clean during the Lenten dinners. We heard many positive com-
ments on how much easier it was to work in the new area. At this time, we would like to thank the following gentlemen
who gave of their time and talents to make this project possible! Cliff Gustafson who did the initial work measuring and
pricing cabinets, Bob Sass for overseeing the project, Steve Voelz for his expertise on electrical, and Bob Bordak for always
stepping up whenever we need help! Thank you to Brian Ernst for his role as general contractor! We appreciate all of
your help. Finally, a shout out to Donna Mersch who went above and beyond making sure the project went smoothly and
spent countless hours meeting with painters, refrigeration repairmen, countertop installers and MUCH MUCH MORE!!
Our final meeting for the summer will be held in June where we will discuss our Salad Luncheon and Rummage Sale. We
hope you will consider joining us. We have a lot of fun serving our church and would love to see you at our meeting!

Spring Musical—Trinity School Gym
Friday, May 8 at 1:45pm and 7:00pm
You are invited to join us on Friday, May 8th for our Spring
Musical—VOICE MESSAGE by Sharon & Don Turney.
MacKenzie is a new believer, and very excited to tell others
about Jesus... but her sister, Max, is so distracted by her obses-
sion with spies, high-tech gadgets and multi-media, she won’t
even listen to a word MacKenzie says. How will God’s message
of love be heard?
This is a job for “SAV’M” (Secret Alliance of Voice Messengers), a group of kids with a pas-
sion for reaching people with the Gospel! Using every idea they can think of, including
high-tech gadgets, movies & media, even slimy green amphibians, they try to get the mes-
sage through to Max, and to a world in desperate need of a Savior. Will they be able to get
the message through? With a little prayer and divine intervention, anything is possible!
With fun, high-energy songs and a great message for everyone, this is sure to be a favorite
of young and old alike!
