    FROM THE EDITOR

The year is again getting away from me and here itis September already and only three more months

to go to the end of the year.

The good news is that Axis Mundi now has anInternational Standard Serial Number, whichmeans all issues will be archived in the NationalLibrary of Australia. The National Library ofAustralia aims to build a comprehensive collectionof Australian publications to ensure that Australianshave access to their documentary heritage now

    and in the future.

The other good news is that Spring has finally made an appearance and it is nowtime to shake off the cold dark shackles of winter and step powerfully into thewaking energy of this new season. So the big question is what are you reallyyearning for? What creative energy is developing and waiting to express itselfthrough you?

The energy of spring is our call to wake up and stretch and move our bodies, ignite

our creativity, and allow life to move through us.

So if you havent noticed, the winds of change have arrived and so we should heedthe call of spring and go with this creative life force energy. Ride the energy of theelement of Air and let your life force flourish. When you attune your personal energyto the changing season, you allow lifes grace and ease to surround you andsurprise you.

The winds of change are always blowing

And every time I try to stayThe winds of change continue blowing

And they just carry me away.Willie Nelson

    Blessings

The Full Moon in Pisces was a time oflove, compassion and giving as eachperson on this night shared their joy withothers, as it turned out it was also anexcellent time to have a Hand Fasting.

    SOL celebrated Amethyst &

Rayvensclaws wedding anniversary witha renewal of vows.

Each of the quarters all shared in theproceedings by joining the hands withcoloured ribbons representing each of thedirections.

The God and the Goddess have taught usthat the hand fasting purpose is to form an

equal partnership, tied together by thetenuous bonds of emotion and love.Marriage is the most fragile ofrelationships and yet the strongest. It isfragile because it requires exactly the rightmix of freedom and interdependence, ofcaring and of sharing, of being togetherand of being alone. It is strong because it

involves the unseen forces of somethingwe call love, mutual devotion, concern forthe happiness of the other, joy in eachother's company. There is no strongerforce than this silent bond of love. This

joining was only a symbol of what alreadyexisted in the silent places of their hearts.

It is theirs to define, to make real and tolive.

It was a heart moving experience for oneand all to see Amethyst & Rayvensclawunited in the sacred Rite of Hand Fastingfor "as long as their love shall last.

More information regarding this circle andpast circles can be found in our Book Of

Shadows. Our next Full Moon Circle willbe held near Engadine on Friday, October7. Please contact us for further details ifyou would like to attend.

    Ostara

Ostara is one of the four lesser holidays or sabbats of the Wheel of the Year. Ostara iscelebrated on the spring equinox, in the Southern hemisphere around September 23,depending upon the specific timing of the equinox.

In the book Eight Sabbats for Witches by Janet and Stewart Farrar, the festival Ostara ischaracterized by the re-joining of the Mother Goddess and her lover-consort-son, whospent the winter months in death. Other variations include the young God regainingstrength in his youth after being born at Yule, and the Goddess returning to her Maidenaspect.

Ostara celebrates renewed life in many forms; eggs, a symbol of rebirth, are painted inbright colours and used in sacred rites before being eaten. Baby animals, especiallychickens, ducks, and rabbits, are symbolic of the season. It celebrates the returning fertilityafter the dormant winter months. It is customary to take walks through parks, make daisychains and celebrate nature. Place a small pot plant on the Altar and decorate yourselfwith fresh flowers during Ostara rituals.

An Old Teutonic custom has people wearing new clothes that they have made to Ostarafestivals. Ostara is a time to start anew. One traditional spell to do a week before Ostara isto write down of all injustices you have done to family and friends and then spend the weektrying to set them right and restore balance. When you have written all the injustices on apiece of paper, burn the paper and symbolically "wipe the slate clean".

Spring begins with the first green shoots andexplodes into a multitude of beautifulblossoms and promise of a good harvest. Inancient times many festivals were held tocelebrate the Spring Goddesses who wereassociated with flowering, growth and fertilityof the land.

At this time of the year, when spring beckonsus for renewal, most of us wish to take on achange that will make us feel good, thatreaches out from within us, to become thatperson that can be realized only through ouressence, or spirit. Spring is a time of the yearwhen the planting begins; people once morecan appreciate the warmth of the sun and thefresh air. We spend more time outside and inthe process we reconnect with the earth.

The Spring Goddess celebrates the turningof the wheel of the year as the death anddecay of winter gives way to a time ofrenewal and rebirth. Here is a list of SpringGoddesses that you can connect tothroughout the months of Spring.

Awake, thou wintry earth -Fling off thy sadness!Fair vernal flowers, laugh forthYour ancient gladness!

    ~Thomas Blackburn, "An Easter Hymn"

It is the spring, the Earth stirs from itsslumber and the thoughts of its inhabitantsturn to the beginning of life. Around us wesee the flowers coming into bloom; trees, once bare, grow leaves of green once more.It is the season of vitality and youthfulexcitement and this vitality flows through allthings. I know for me the proof spring washere was the blooming of the lilacs. In fact,my home town celebrates the spring theweekend following Ostara with a festival that

    goes all weekend.

Ostara is a time for new life and fertility. It is atime when nature and gardeners begin toprepare for planting the seeds of the season. It is a time when all things become alive andfertile. It is a time when the scale of light anddark balance just before the sun begins to tipthe scales towards the light.

For The Horned God, a youthful visagegrowing stronger every day, the boy isbecoming a man and now He and TheGoddess come together. Youthful energy

abounds as the couple share the joys of thespring. Ostara celebrates the gift of life thatgrows within the beauty of The Goddess asThe Horned God sews the seeds for hisrebirth.

The Horned God stands proudly. His energy

warms the land. He is the protector of nature. The Greenman nurturing the forest. TheHorned Hunter guarding and caring for natureand both wooing and protecting the beauty ofThe Goddess, Mother Earth who now growswith life.

We celebrate Ostara by enjoying the spring.Plant new life. Nurture it as The Goddessdoes. Walk in the parks or the woods or alonga river bank and relish the sun and the beauty

of life. This is the season of life and we tooare a part of it and influenced by it. It can beeasy, especially in the city, to forget this. Weforget because we control our environment somuch but when we look out into the world andsee a bright sunny day we feel nature call usto celebrate with The Horned God and hisbeloved Goddess and enjoy their bounties.

In the days ahead, take time out and relax inthe growing warmth of the spring and be apart of the joy of this world.

    Bright Ostara Blessings to All

Personally I think that there is a marginaldifference between a Grimoire and a Book ofShadows. A Book of Shadows usuallycontains notes on rituals, rites of passageand initiation, basic altar set-up

    styles/techniques and some spells.

A Grimoire contains the same information asa Book of Shadows but in addition it caninclude instructions on how to create magical

objects like talismans and amulets, how toperform magical spells, charms anddivination. It also includes things likeastrological calculations, planetary squares, correspondence tables, planetary hours,

moon signs and of course how to summonor invoke supernatural entities such asdeities, angels, spirits, dragons and demonsetc.

Whilst the term grimoire is originallyEuropean, and many Europeans throughouthistory, particularly ceremonial magicians andcunning folk have made use of grimoires.

The first grimoires appeared during the HighMiddle Ages, and they contained a variety ofmaterials, from astrological calculations todirections for making talismans.

The word grimoire comes from the OldFrench grammaire, a word derived from theGreek grammatikos, which means pertainingto letters. When most people were illiterate, the printed word was regarded as highlysuspect and perhaps a bit supernatural. Atone point, all books were referred to as

grimoires, and over time, the world came tobe used specifically for books whichpertained to magic.

The two best known grimoires are the Key ofSolomon (Clavicula Salomoni) and the LesserKey of Solomon (The Lemegeton). Theseare believed to have been written by KingSolomon because of his gift of wisdom fromGod, which gave him his magical powers.

The oldest of the grimoire myths is the worksof Hermes Trismegistus. The great Egyptiangod Thoth, the creator of writing, became theRoman Hermes Thrice Great. Not only washis invention of writing significant but itincorporated the secrets of life, nature, andalchemy. Most famous of these works is theEmerald Tablet. It is supposed to hold thesecrets of nature and allow man to domagical things, mainly turn base metals intogold.

Perhaps the man who did the most to bringthe grimoire to prominence was Dr. JohnDee. Desiring to make a name for himselfamong the crown heads of Europe, heclaimed to know the secrets of Alchemy andwrote a number of works which are basicallygrimoires in order to convince the rich andfamous to finance his experiments.

    How to Create A Grimoire

There are no hard and fast rules regardingwhat kind of book should be used for a

grimoire, it simply is a matter of personalchoice. Ideally it should be big enough tokeep a working ledger of any work done, results obtained and information learned

    Decoration

You may feel the need to personalize yourtome, to make it feel like yours. Do what youfeel is right in its personalization bydecorating it as see fit, things like coveringthe outside in something attractive, if you arecreative you could cover the book inwallpaper, or a collage or even paint yourown designs onto it and varnish it in. Thechoices are as endless as you can imagine.

What do I put in it?

Typically, you would put a working record ofanything magical you have done, learned orexperienced. Try and keep it clean and tidy, and mark your entries with any date and timeinformation so you know later on when youdid them. A good idea when you are learningis write out any information you wish tocommit to memory within it, therefore it willforce you to rationalize the information again

writing in your own words, do not just copytext or it may not go in your brain as well asprocessing it in your own way. Dreams anddivination can also be catalogued too, thisway you can refer back on them for thefuture.

Before you write anything in it, consider whatyou want the text to actually look like. Dont just go writing all over it without planningevery page. Pick up a nice fountain pen, or,

learn to write with a quill pen. For the addedextra touch, I suggest practicing calligraphy,as well as decorative lettering. Practicewriting in clear, straight lines, and creatingdecipherable text. When youre finished witheach page, allow it time to dry, so that youdont smudge the ink.

Shamans and spirit workers throughout timehave learned to work with the basic fourelements in order to help and heal their

    communities.

Shamans have a priority to develop a healingrelationship with Nature. Through practice ofworking with the elements we all have theincredible potential for creating and restoringbalance and well-being to our lives and ourplanet. As shamans we can harmonize ourconnections with the elements - bridgingearth and sky for the love of this wonderful

    planet.

Working with the elements is aboutestablishing a relationship with each element. So start by calling upon them, so you can

develop a deep understanding of theircharacteristics.

Working with the Element of Air

The elemental Spirits of Air are the Sylphs.Useful Gods/Spirits to call upon for help: Oya,the Morrigan, Athena, Hermes, Thor, Gna,the four major winds, or even the minorwinds.

    1. Breath work

In order to know Air you have to be Air. Takea moment and imagine yourself to be Air.Bring the feeling into your consciousness. Now, as you exhale, visualize the entire Airelement which is in you going out with your

    14/42Axis Mundi September 2011 13

breath and then inhale it back into you and goback to normal consciousness.

While you don't have to learn every obscurebreathing technique in existence, you shouldbe able to alter your consciousness bybreathing. You should be able to calmyourself, and get yourself into a space forjourneying through breath alone.

You can also imbue your breath with intent toenhance your energy; you can then blow itonto something such as a spell. This type ofbreath work is also good for purification.

    2. Singing

This is a bardic technique whereby you use

your voice as a conduit for raising powerespecially for creating magic.

    3. Weather magic

Working in partnership with the elementsallows you to enact weather magic. There is alimit to how much control you can have overthe weather; however you need tounderstand it, and have learnt to work with it.You need to be aware of the changingpatterns of the weather and have developed

the skill of predicting the weather by how theair smells.

    4. The Four Winds

Learn about the winds and practice speakingto them. There is great power in developing arelationship with all four winds.

    5. Shapeshifting try Shapeshifting into abird and feel the exhilaration of flying.

    6. Writing

Learning to write articulately and well. Whilethis is more the part of the bard it is animportant part of working with the power ofAir. It is useful for the shamanic practitioneras well, especially if you intend to teach, ordo public ceremony for the community.

This week at SOL's meditation in the Royal National Park we connected with the Element of Air.Not long afterwards the wind really picked up and leaves showered down everywhere. It was a

spectacular display put on especially for us! It's a shame the flying leaves were too small to showclearly in my photos, although if you look carefully at my photo you can see a couple of leaves and

    flying cockatoos..

Now that it is spring the Parrots have invadedmy backyard. All day long I have beenlistening to their unceasing chatter. Eventhough they have managed to make a messof my backyard with leaves scattered all overthe place, I cant help but admire the beautyand the depth of colour that these birdsexhibit.

The parrots displayed in the photos areAustralian King Parrots. They are a largedistinctive and broad-tailed. The male hasplain scarlet head and body, the female ispredominantly green with scarlet belly andunder tail coverts. Its flight is strong buterratic with its long heavy tail prominent. Ithas a metallic chack chack voice. King-Parrots are found along the east coast and

ranges of Australia, ranging from Cooktown inQueensland through to Port Campbell inVictoria. The King-Parrot mostly forages intrees for seeds and fruit.

As a totem the Parrot encourages you tokeep seeking for that which nourishes you.The Parrot is a showy and brightly colouredwho love the sound of their own voice, alwaystrying to be heard over others. When Parrotappears it is an indication that there is a

journey into the past required to heal theinner child. With its brightly coloured feathers, the parrot is considered a bird of the sun. Theattributes of colour and association with thelife-giving sun are what gives it its magic.Parrot feathers can be used to invoke theenergies of the sun at any time of the year.

Parrots have the communication skills thatcan awaken a diplomacy within and enableyou to understand others more effectively.

    Parrot Medicine

Parrot medicine gives you the power of wordsthat can influence others with a lastingimpact. If you combine those words with theeffective use of colour your message will notbe forgotten. Take care to choose thosewords carefully so that they are supportive, encouraging and positive. To use your gifts in

a negative way can have a devastating anddestructive effect.

Your words are a reflection of yourinner spirit.

Traditionally, the Medicine Shield was usedas a method of protection against evil spirits, but over time the nature of the shield has

changed. Today it is seen as a personalshield which declares its owners sacredintentions and medicine or inherent power.

The Medicine Wheel symbolizes theindividual journey we each must take to findour own path. Within the Medicine Wheelthere are representations of the four cardinaldirections and the circle is significant as itrepresents the circle of Life.

The personal shield is often made of animalskin or hide stretched over a wooden hoop. The painting and the objects tied to theshield, all have their special meanings andqualities which are, in turn, imparted to theowner of the shield. A shield may bedecorated with symbols that represent theowners power or spirit animal; it can alsorepresent a special experience, a dream oran important journey.

Making your own medicine shield can be avaluable lesson in shamanic understandingbecause it can help you to recognize yourown medicine power and how also to

express it. You can make your ownmedicine shield from chamois leather orfabric stretched around a wooden

    embroidery ring.

The shield is intended to be a mirror of theself, reflecting what you are andexpressing in some way the dreams oraspirations you want to bring into being. Soit can serve also as a reminder of yourmission in life, your souls journey as youpresently perceive it.

Making a medicine shield is a means ofconnecting to your Higher Self for thepurpose of awakening bringing into materialreality an intention of the soul and therebyfulfilling the souls purpose. The medicineshield can be a work in progress. It can beadded to, developed, and even changed asones life unfolds.

    By Maria

Well another month has gone and time to putpen to paper again, so the saying goes. Thistime, this crystal showed itself earlier in themonth at various times. Firstly when I went ona ghost tour, a member of our team allowedme to hold his piece of Amethyst, as itcalmed and protected me throughout the

    evening.

The second time it was during our regularmeditation at the national park. The colour ofthis crystal was so vibrant during themeditation. I was at peace with self, mind andbody, my experience was serenity rolled inone package.

I was given further confirmation via a TVshow on the ABC called the Time Team.

The team had excavated an area upondiscovering a mosaic floor. This mosaic hadbeen damaged, well actually defaced. Butone of the archaeologists believed that it wasthe God Bacchus, the God of wine that had

been removed. Now, that was a surprise Ihad just the night before read something onBacchus and his relation to the crystal. Thegods certainly speak to us; we just have to beopen enough to listen.

The crystal is amethyst, it is one that most of

us know something about or even have in ourcollection. A very popular quartz crystal thatis easily identifiable by its colour, purple. Itdoes come in various shades, the darker thecolour the greater the value, in monetaryterms. The value one places on crystals ofany kind does not always come with a dollarvalue.

My first piece of amethyst was set in a ring.Looking back now I believe that was the start

of my interest in crystals. I wanted a piece of jewellery with my birthstone. That was in myschool years. I still have this ring; the colouris a lighter shade of purple but as mentioned

    Crystal ~

earlier it is not a monetary value that weplace on such items.

Amethyst is a stone of transformation. Wellspring is here, Mother Nature is makingchanges, and seeds are no longer seeds theyhave sprouted, they have been transformed. So if you want change/transformation in yourlife a piece of amethyst can certainly put youin a place of quietness where you can receivemessages or visions to change your life andperception of it.

I keep one on the bed side table and - talkabout insightful - the messages I havereceived are indicative of change needed onmy part. They are big changes but amethysthas a way of calming my anger and fear

towards these changes. It provides clarity forme. My goals and dreams can be realisedthrough change in my behaviour and negativebeliefs plus it assists me in keeping myemotions levelled while making the transition.

An amethyst by the bed side table or underyour pillow also assists those who find it hardto get a good nights rest. You can also rubthe crystal over the temple area for relief.

The Season of spring is about mentalpowers, visions, psychic dreams and wisdom,so a piece of amethyst will certainly provideyou with that.

It is no wonder that the God Bacchus, revealed himself to me. Bacchus is the Godof wine. He is associated with fertility thusconnecting him to Beltane and spring, and heis also a deity of the harvest.

I can remember as a child I used to helpharvest our backyard grapes, and crush themwith my feet to make wine. I can tell you thatit was hard work and a party at the sametime. It was very much a family gathering ofsorts.

It is important to take some time out, go andenjoy the company of friends, take a bottle ofwine, celebrate, honour and thank the GodBacchus and other spring deities, at this

    magical time.

Enjoy spring, honour the gods and believethat your dreams and goals can become a

reality and here we have one of the beststones to help us in that process and assistus to proceed without fear.

Recently Rayvensclaw & I were dining out &I was jealously watching him soak up thislovely green-gold liquid. I wondered when &how you could use this tasty herbe, so heressome information:-

    LORE

The olive has been linked with religiousobservance throughout the western world. It

was believed that Moses exempted the menwho worked in the olive groves from militaryservice. It is an olive leaf that Noahs dovebrings back to him to herald the return of agrowing earth.

Perhaps the greatest association of the oliveis with the goddess of war and wisdom,Athena, who was worshipped at theParthenon. Athena falls into disagreementwith Poseidon over who was the patron deity

of Greece. Poseidon used his trident to bringforth a spring of finely salted water, butAthena planted an olive tree and was easilythe victor. The sacred olive tree of Athens, the first olive tree given to the Greeks by the

goddess Athena, grew in the Acropolis and inthe area of the Academy there were the 12sacred olive trees, 'moriai', and the sacredolive grove from which the olive oil given as aprize to the winners of the Panathenea wastaken. In 480 BC, when the Persiansoccupied Athens, they burnt down the sacredtree and this was considered by theAthenians a bad sign. But the next day, sorrow was replaced by joy seeing that theburnt trunk had already budded.

Heracles in his trial with the Nemean Lion isvictorious through using a club made of olivewood. The olive has long represented victoryand glory. It was the most used oil for thelamps kept burning in Greek temples. Andolive wreaths were used to crown the

    Olympic victors.

The Roman goddess of peace and harmony,Concordia, is shown holding an olive branch. It is from this that the belief that an olivebranch represents peace may have grown.

Graves has written that the olive was widelyused at the celebration of spring. Olives livefor a very long time, 300-400 years, andPlato's Olive tree is still alive, though no

    longer productive.

    USAGE

Olive oil may be used to honour solar deitiesor invoke those of past pantheons. This can

be done through burning it or using it to dressritual candles. Many old formulas for ritualoils use olive as the fixative.

Olive oil can be used ritually to bless andconsecrate incense burners and thuribles. The olives magick (in the extracted oil) is amixture of the elements of air and fire.

Olive leaves can be scattered or placed in aroom to bring peaceful vibrations throughoutthe area. Olives can be eaten to ensurefertility as well as sexual potency in men, andbrides can wear olive leaves to ensure theirfertility.

Olives attributes; peace, harmony, happiness, goodness and purity; and its

historical association with Ostara/Eostarashould encourage you to plant an olive tree atthe Spring Equinox.

To cure yourself of a headache, writeAthena's name on an olive leaf and press itagainst your head or wear it on your body.

The Sun enters Libra at 9:05 UTC on 23

September 2011. This is the spring equinoxin the southern hemisphere and the autumnalequinox in the northern hemisphere. At allpoints on the globe, the length of day andnight will be equal. This is the third of thefour cardinal points of the zodiacal wheelwhich occur each calendar year, following theAries Equinox and the Cancer Solstice, andpreceding the Capricorn Solstice.

Libra is the sign of the balance, the only sign

of the zodiac which is represented by aninanimate object. It is the sign that is exactlyhalfway around the circle of the ecliptic, thepoint of mediation between the beginning andthe end. Being a cardinal sign, it isassociated with initiation of change, andbeing an air sign, it is concerned with theabstract principles behind reality. Being thedignity of Venus and the exaltation of Saturn,Libra represents the exacting standards towhich the highest aesthetic must conform, thesweet harmony of mathematical andgeometric perfection, the perfectly balancedjudgment that corrects the unjust. Hence it is

in the sign of Libra that we the universalexperiences of role-playing in relationships, argument and counter-argument, thesis andantithesis, forever aiming to achieve theoptimum balance between parties. When theSun enters Libra, it is a good time to reflecton the social side of our lives how we relateto those around us, whether partners, friends,

enemies, employers, employees, parents, children. It requires us to be proactive tomaintain a sense of composure and balancein our dealings with people generally, wehave to give as well as take; to be gallant, dignified and civil, and to be responsive inkind. This means entering a game of sorts, but playing by the rules.

Both Venus and Saturn are also placed inLibra at the time of the equinox, which

underlines the current significance of thetheme of justice in the world at present. When it comes to relationships betweensocial partners, are the rules being followed,or are certain people above the law? Is thereone set of rules governing appropriatebehaviour for one group which somehowdoesnt apply to another? Is this fair? Howmuch respect does the law attract and howrelevant are judicial institutions when it comesto the real issues at play in the wider world, issues like sovereignty, democratic process, corporate accountability and labour laws?

The Sun is opposite Uranus and squarePluto, underlining the Uranus-Pluto squarewhich is getting closer to its first exact pass(which will be mid-2012). The pressure isbuilding to fever pitch, as the tensions buildbetween the corporate and banking oligarchyand their ever more desperate grab for power

and resources, and the anarchistic forces ofindividuals determined to stand up for therights of human beings and to fight thetotalitarian tendencies descending on theworld. As Uranus squares off on Pluto, the

revolutionary insistence on human freedomclashes with the totalizing, dehumanizing andatomizing imperative which lies at the heart ofsystems of social control and massconformity. With the Sun in Libra, the lightshines on the role that we each play in thisstand-off which side do we stand on, or dowe continue to sit on the fence for the sake ofstaying out of the fray?

It may not be possible to stay on the sidelinesmuch longer. At the time of this equinox, there is a close conjunction of the Moon andMars in early Leo, closely trine Uranus inearly Aries. This trine in fire signs representsthe passion of fiery imagination, bold visionsof the future and strongly expressed feelingsof anger and demands for freedom. Tempers

run high as dramatic displays of frustrationover the slow pace of change take centrestage. What do you really feel? Maybe youshould just come out and say it declareyour intuitions and stand up for your views just dont lose your cool completely. Fromgrand gestures to theatrical shows to childishtantrums the season that is upon us drawsout the more expressive emotional displays. The Moon and Mars are also in quincunx(150) to Pluto, highlighting the long-term

deep-set pressures slowly building that havebeen festering away in our psyche andmaking people uncomfortable and mistrustfulof the powers that be.

Libra Equinox 2011. 23 September 2011,9:05 UTC. Unplaced Chart, Natural Houses

With Jupiter still in Taurus, but nowretrograde, progress may seem slower ortraction more difficult to achieve. It may feellike success is harder to attain, or like positivedevelopments are less frequent. This is atime to review the plans for future expansion,to check if they accord with the practicalreality of available resources. Paring backunrealistic plans now may save a lot ofwasted time and energy later.

Mercury is strong in its exaltation in Virgo, upand at it early as it now rises before the Sun.It sextiles the Moon and Mars and opposesCeres, the goddess of spring and theflourishing of organic life on earth. Mercurysposition tells of what will be most talked aboutin the coming 3 months, what we will hear the

most about in the media, what will becirculating most frequently on the airwaves. Here we see that Mercury in Virgo isconcerned with efficiency, health andeconomy. Mercury has always beenassociated with trade as in merchants andcommerce and as the banking troublesreverberate throughout the world, we can seeever more clearly the unhealthy contrastbetween poverty and waste, consumeristgreed and the corruption that prohibits the

effective delivery of services. The oppositionto Ceres indicates a direct dialogue withMother Earth, we are very conscious of hermighty natural powers with many earthchanges and shifts predicted in the comingmonths as well as the closest approach toEarth of the comet Elenin at the end ofSeptember.

The sign of Virgo becomes important inanother way over the next few months.

Around November 2011 the fixed starRegulus moves from Leo into Virgo. Regulus, associated with prestige, power and glory, has been in tropical Leo for the last 2160years how appropriate for a world ruled bypowerful elites and societies ruled by moneyand power. Now we have Regulus move intothe sign of service, resourcefulness, technology, skill and duty, as we arebecoming increasingly aware of waste, globalresources, ecology and efficiency. Perhaps

those who learn to adapt an attitude ofservice to the sacred, the planet earth, herprecious resources and the healing of theplanet will be the new heroes of the next

  • 8/4/2019 AxisMundi - September 2100 - Issue 43

    27/42Axis Mundi September 2011 26

2160 years as Regulus makes its slow transitthrough Virgo. With Neptune opposite for thefirst few years of this shift of Regulus, we arenot quite assured of what is to come next, norwhat the new heroes will be like, or in factwho they are yet.

So in summary this is a time to reflect onwhether events in the world and in our livesare conforming to our sense of universal justice, and then to make a decision aboutwhere we stand in the various dilemmas thatwe face in everyday life. This may seem likewe have to take sides, but sometimes taking

sides is the appropriate thing to do, so longas we pick the right side! This requires thesort of consideration, fairness and poisenaturally associated with Libra, even in theface of the fiery intensity and theatrics ofpassionately-expressed views.

This Libra Equinox, focus your intention onthe role you play in the relationships in yourlife, and on how you can contribute to agreater sense of justice in the world throughactive engagement with opposing views, sothat a clearer, more considered and faireroutcome can emerge.

    ADRIANASBOOK CORNER

I went to a wonderful workshop given byGede Parma recently. It was a wonderfullydeep, wild and mystic experience that I hopewill repeat very soon. Gede is a 23-year-oldWitch and High Priest. You may be takenaback by his young age, but let me tell youGedes wisdom is so deep that you soonforget how young he is until you see his

immense enthusiasm and wild side that is!After attending his workshop I bought hisbook By Land Sky and Sea, which is apractical book full of insight and techniquesfor Witches and Pagans.

I would like to thank Gede for letting meinterview him and for sharing his wisdom sogenerously. Id also like to thank Terry forletting us use her space, as well as for the tea

and the company.1. Tell us about how you came to thepath of Witchcraft?

I was born into Balinese Hinduism, which hasobvious Vedic influences and is animistic, and for that reason I would also consider itShamanic. My ancestors were Healers andSeers, especially my grandmother who wasknown as a Holy Woman and was, for lack ofa better word, a Witch, a Shaman; so I was

raised with stories of my grandmothershealing, seeing into the future and beingpossessed by spirits; I was also raised withmeditation, Deities and Altars.

At the age of 11 I started exploring the idea ofWitches, Magic, enchantment; I knew therewas something behind those concepts. Iidentified with the archetype of the Witch, without really knowing what it meant. At 14 Icame across a book on Wicca, I had heard

about it when I was in year 7 from someonein school; however all he had said was that itwas a religion, so I started finding more andmore information and then started coming upwith a self-determined practice. But when Ifound my first Coven I stopped identifyingmyself as Wiccan and started seeing myselfas a Witch, a Pagan and an eclectic.

At 15 Persephone visited me and shechanged the way I live my spirituality, whichis much more polytheistic and technique-based. So it has been a weaving of differentpractices and experiences, I went from beingheavily Eastern to heavily Western. I stillhonour the Hindu deities; however the Greekmysteries and contemporary Witchcraft arevery important to me.

    2. What inspired you to become awriter? How has writing changed the wayyou view the world?

I am very opinionated and I believe everyoneis Divine. I believe I have a right to expressmy views. As a writer I try to be extremelybroad while still maintaining some form ofdefinition. A definition should invite more thanitself, whilst still being definite and potent. Ihave a gift for words. I love to create wordpictures, I love writing. Deadlines can bescary however.

    3. What and who has influenced you in

    your writing?

Starhawk and Phyllis Curott. Ive met themboth and have always thought they arewonderful; they are like my idols. They are

  • 8/4/2019 AxisMundi - September 2100 - Issue 43

amazing writers, amazing people, theypractise what they teach, they walk their talk, they are skilful witches, and they are amazingactivists. They are renowned not only withinthe Pagan community but also around theworld. They are impacting the globalmovements and are so inspirational, which isvery important to me.

    4. Tell us about your last book, ByLand, Sky and Sea?

It came out of an experience in Ireland in2008. In Wildwood we work with the 3 worldsof Shamanic Witchcraft (the Upper world, themiddle world and the lower world). My book isabout people discovering these forthemselves. Shamanism is and was an all-encompassing Earth-reverent Mystic

tradition. All cultures have had Shamansthrough history.

There is a wonderful quote that says Artistsare the modern Shamans and I think thatsvery true as Shamans work directly with thecreative force.

The fundamental role of the Shaman is toserve the community. Shamans are alsothose who challenge perceptions, who walkon the edges.

    5. In your view, what is/are the mainteaching/s of Paganism?

Most broadly, Paganism is about what I callthe mater/mother principal, which is theEarth, Matter is directly spiritual, sacred. There is no profanity about it. Paganism is anactively engaged tradition in which we allowourselves to be conscious and to connect anddraw enlightenment from all those

connections and interrelations. We should allcare for one another and show compassionand be consciously engaged with oneanother because if all is Sacred then we allembody Divinity.

Also Paganism is a joyful religion. Each of usis directly connected to the Goddess.

    6. Three of the most influential books inyour life are

The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk. Itis the type of society that I would love tolive in. It presents challenges that couldarise in our society but also offers hope.

Book of Shadows by Phyllis Curott. Ilove it because its about enchantmentand the fact that the world if full of magic;theres an amazing quote that says Mostpeople know intuitively that when you fallin love, the world is full of magic. Whatthey dont know is that when you discoverthe universe is full of magic, you fall inlove with the world. Its a veryempowering book for anyone whoembraces Magic.

Charles de Lint; he writes urban fantasybooks called the Newford Chronicles andthey are about when white people came toNorth America, their spirits, fairies etc.came with them to the new world and metthe ancient spirits of the land; the fairiesended up having to live in the urban areasbecause Ancient Spirits wouldnt go intourban areas.

Homer wrote this beautiful quote that says,We must beware because the Gods walkamong us with human clothing, and this ismore than a metaphor it is a reality, I havehad experiences when Ive been sitting nextto someone I had thought was a person, andthey ended up being a God or a Faerie.

I had this experience when I was a child withmy family, we were walking down this busystreet in Ubud and saw a man begging formoney; we all ignored him and kept onwalking; as soon as we passed him we all feltthis strange electric zap up our backs withinless than a second, and when we turnedaround he had disappeared, then my fathersaid oh no, that was a God and spent thenext few hours looking for him, so it was likea test of compassion.

    7. Can you tell us about new projects orbooks coming up?

The book Ive just finished is called EcstaticWitchcraft, and the subtitle is Magic,Philosophy and Trance in the ShamanicWitchcraft. Its a bit longer than By Sky, Landand Sea. Its more about the why and how wedo things. Both together form the material Iteach in my 2 year Shamanic Craft

apprenticeship; we have a monthly lesson, consisting of 6 months of Land, 6 months ofSky and 12 months of Sea.

    8. What is the most important thing foryou about your spirituality?

That it makes me conscious. Theres adefinition of Witch which we have collectivelyin the WildWood Coven and that is anindividual who is aware and through ignitedawareness seeks to serve and celebrate the

life force inherent in Self, Community andCosmos.

The only thing that makes a Witch a Witch isthat awareness, but beyond that is ignitingthe awareness, is acting from thatawareness, seeking to joyfully serve andcelebrate in partnership with all my Allies,Deities, Gods and Goddesses.

Its a deeply potent, empowering relationship

because everything supports me. We are ofthe elements, we are of the Gods. I rejoice. Iam grateful. I praise. Even just talking about itI feel excited, grateful; it is so simple.

    9. What does the Goddess mean to youand what can you tell us about how yourelate to Her?

Im a Polytheist, and I dont get the idea somepeople have of the one and only Goddess, forme thats just changing from having a

bearded man to a woman with a skirt up inthe sky. I believe in many Gods, we are allGods, potent spirits, amazing. I do agree withthe Reclaiming definition of the Goddessthough as the immanent life force, thatswhen I say I honour the Goddess, the cyclesof birth, death and re-birth. Saying theGoddess for me is political, its aboutreconsecrating the feminine as divine, but itsso much beyond gender for me. Im not intodualism of the sexes; Goddess for me isbeyond feminine.

    12. From your writings and interviews, you seem to work a lot with Persephone,Hekate, Hermes and Aphrodite. Can youtell us about your relationship with theseparticular Gods and Goddesses?

Im really drawn to the Greek mysteries. Thefirst deity who ever manifested wanting towork with me was Persephone. I was having

a Full Moon Circle in my mothers kitchen. The Moon was rising through the Northernwindow and I saw this silver silhouette of awoman, she was beautiful; I didnt know whatI was contacting but when I saw Her in the

kitchen I simple called her Persephone, whichwas a big shock for me as I didnt know whoPersephone was; I just said the name, it wasas if my soul remembered. I call her my SoulGoddess. She opened the door to the GreekGods and mysteries. Ive worked withHermes casually, whenever I needsomething, hes a very useful God; I oftenjoke that he took everything the other deitiesdidnt want, like commerce, thievery, communication, procreation and magic.

I work very closely with these Gods andGoddesses and have Spiritual Contracts withthem, almost like marriage; similar to theVoudoun traditions of marrying the lwa.

    13. What would you say a Modern Paganis?

Someone who knows that the Earth issacred, who tends to draw inspiration fromEuropean mythologies or from the Near East, including Egypt and Sumeria. Someone whoembraces Earth and the flesh as absolutelyspiritual and does so joyfully, making itrelevant to the modern era.

    14. In your Spirituality you weave togethera number of traditions, including Wicca,Stregheria, Faerycraft, traditionalWitchcraft, etc and you refer to yourselfand sometimes your rituals as Wild! Canyou tell us more about it?

I see myself as syncretic, weaving thesedifferent traditions into a wholeness thatreflects and embodies my unfolding evolution.I weave together but also honour all of thetraditions, so if Im doing a Celtic ritual, its aCeltic ritual, but at the end of the day its allme. The best example of this is my devotionalweekly ritual which I have been conductingsince 2004. Within my devotional the variousthreads which influence me are madeapparent in subtle and sometimes overtways. I prepare with Feri techniques of triplesoul alignment and raising the Crossroads. Ithen honour Here and Now and light a flameto Hekate, Queen of Witches. I perform aGreek blessing rites, honour my ancestorsand their deities and totems. I call upon the

Fey and honour the Spirits of Place. It is onlyafter all of this that I cast the Circle itself. If you would like to buy Gedes books, visithttp://www.llewellyn.com or visit his websitewww.gedeparma.com
