Veolia Water wins new water contracts in OmanVeolia Water has secured a five-

year contract to provide co-man-agement services to the Sultanate of Oman’s water sector on behalf of the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW).

The Veolia Water contract, which has a two-year extension option, targets improve-ments in the management of facilities, the efficiency of the water distribution network and the expansion of the network within Oman, particularly small-scale desalination plants in rural areas. PAEW is responsible for water supply in eight of Oman’s nine regions.

Meanwhile the State-owned Majis Industrial Services Co has entered into a strategic alliance partnership with Veolia Water, through Azaliya Water Services, cover-ing the operation, maintenance and manage-ment of water utilities in Oman’s Port of Sohar. The six-year contract covers operation and maintenance of the client’s existing and future facilities and strategic management support.

Hyflux to develop 3 water projects in Chongqing, China

Hyflux Ltd is investing US$45 million in three Build-Own-

Transfer (BOT) water projects at the Hechuan Industrial Park in Chongqing City, China.

Hyflux will operate and maintain the plants over the 30-year concession periods.

The Hexin District Wastewater Treatment Plant will treat 20 000 m3 per day of wastewater for the industrial park. The Weituo Wastewater Treatment Plant will be designed to have a treatment capac-ity of 20 000 m3 per day for the industrial park while the Weituo Water Treatment Plant will tap water from upstream Jialing River to produce up to 50 000 m3 of potable water per day for industrial and domestic use.

The three plants should be completed by the end of 2012.

advance sound water policy, the interests of our members and the publics they serve,” said WEF president Jeannette Brown. “Both AWWA and WEF are excited to explore future partnerships that make the water pro-fession’s collective voice even stronger.”

“The water industry has changed in recent years, and our work is no longer eas-ily defined as either ‘water’ or ‘wastewater’,” said AWWA president Joseph Mantua. “AWWA and WEF recognise that, now more than ever, increased collaboration will ben-efit members from both organisations and improve our collective effectiveness, particu-larly in matters of public policy.”

GE, Laing O’Rourke to construct Australian water treatment plant

GE and Laing O’Rourke are to build a water treatment facility

in southwest Queensland for QGC, an Australian coal seam gas explorer and producer.

Coal seam gas is a form of natural gas trapped in coal beds by water and ground pressure. The new Kenya Water Treatment Plant will use GE’s advanced membrane and thermal water treatment technologies to desalinate water produced during the extrac-tion of gas from the coal seams.

The water treatment plant, to be built near the town of Chinchilla about 290 kms west of Brisbane, will have the capacity to treat up to 72 million litres per day. The facility is expected to begin commercial operation in the final quarter of 2011.

POWER GENERATION

Alstom to build new power facility in Estonia

Alstom has signed a E950 mil-lion contract with Narva

Elektrijaamad AS, a subsidiary of Estonia’s state owned utility Eesti Energia, to supply two 300 MW units for a fossil fuel power plant based on circulating fluidised bed (CFB) boiler technology in Estonia.

The agreement covers a 540 million 300 MW unit and an option for a second 410

million 300 MW unit, which could be exer-cised by Narva Elektrijaamad within the next 18 months.

Alstom will design, manufacture, supply, install, test and commission the units. This includes the supply of final fuel handling, CFB boiler, steam turbine, flue gas treat-ment, automation and control systems and electrical systems for each unit.

Alstom has previously supplied enhanced dust removal systems (electrostatic pre-cipitators) to Eesti Energia and performed three low-pressure turbine retrofits at the Narva power plants. Alstom is currently supplying new desulphurisation systems for four 200 MW Narva plants and has also a long term service agreement with Narva since 2000.

E.ON expands Waldeck 2 pumped-storage hydro station

E.ON is planning to increase the capacity of the Waldeck pumped-

storage hydroelectric station on Lake Eder in central Germany.

E.ON will begin building a new 300 MW pumped-storage plant next to the existing Waldeck 2 facility in 2012. Like Waldeck 2, the new plant will have an underground turbine room. Construction is expected to take four years, and the new plant should be operational in 2016.

The 250 million project is expected to be approved in late 2011.

B&W to uprate Omaha nuclear generating station

Babcock & Wilcox Nuclear Energy Inc (B&W NE) has been won a

US$24 million contract from Omaha Public Power District in Omaha, Nebraska for uprate modifications at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Generating Station.

The work includes engineering and con-struction to replace critical components and associated plant modifications. B&W’s engineering work began last December in preparation for power uprate activity dur-ing the plant’s 2012 refuelling outage.

Westinghouse, China SNPTC extend cooperation agreement

Westinghouse Electric Co and China’s State Nuclear Power

Technology Corp have signed a two-year extension to their nuclear cooperation agreement that focuses on continued deployment of the Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear power plant in China as well as service and maintenance, technology develop-ment and strategic investment.

The original agreement between the two companies was signed in 2008.

Westinghouse and its consortium team member The Shaw Group are currently pro-viding four AP1000 units in China, two each at Sanmen and Haiyang.

OIL & GAS

Rosneft and BP form strategic alliance

BP and the Russian oil producer Rosneft have agreed a ground-

breaking strategic global alliance that will see both companies work together and swap shares.

Rosneft and BP will explore and develop three licence blocks – EPNZ 1, 2, 3 – on the Russian Arctic continental shelf. These licences were awarded to Rosneft in 2010 and cover approxi-mately 125 000 sq km of the South Kara Sea.

Rosneft will hold 5% of BP’s ordinary voting shares in exchange for approximately 9.5% of Rosneft’s shares.

BP and Rosneft have also agreed to set up an Arctic technology centre in Russia which will work with Russian and international research institutes, design bureaus and uni-versities to develop technologies and engi-neering practices for the safe extraction of hydrocarbon resources from the Arctic shelf.
