AWHONN’s highest honor—the Distinguished
Professional Service Award, which is presented
annually to a member whose professional
accomplishments and contributions to the
association exemplify a commitment to excel-
lence. A professor in the College of Nursing
at Brigham Young University, Dr. Callister’s
research has greatly enhanced nurses’ ability to
provide culturally sensitive childbearing health
care services. Through her service to AWHONN
and other organizations and through her edu-
cational outreach, Dr. Callister has improved
obstetrical health care both in the United States
and abroad.
Karen Peddicord, PhD, RN, AWHONN’s Di-
rector of Research, Education and Publications,
received the Caring Award, for her outstanding
leadership as the AWHONN Interim Executive
aAttendance records were broken for a second
year in a row at this year’s AWHONN national
convention, held in June in Orlando, FL. The
theme of the conference was “Inspired to Excel-
lence,” and the sunny skies, palm trees and lure
of Disney World couldn’t distract the more than
3,000 attendees from the workshops, poster
sessions and exhibit booths, where the latest
evidence-based information was shared and
where nurses networked with familiar col-
leagues and new friends.
Outstanding Nurses are Honored
Among the highlights of the convention was
the presentation of awards recognizing the
achievements of several outstanding nurses.

Outstanding Reviewers Named Two AWHONN members have been recog-
nized for their outstanding contributions as
journal manuscript reviewers in 2006. Emily S.
McKinney, RN, MS, was named Reviewer of the
Year for JOGNN and Nancy Beck Irland, RN,
MS, CNM, was named Reviewer of the Year for
Nursing for Women’s Health. The work of nurse
experts like Emily and Nancy, who volunteer
their time to review manuscripts and provide
