Today and in the next two editions of Faith Alive!, we will be printing information to help you get to know the members of our 2017-2018 Church Council a bit better.

First up is SUZANNE JOHNSTONBAUGH, who is currently serving as Secretary of our council. Suzanne moved to Phoenix with her parents from Thief River Falls, Minnesota in 1956. As a lifelong Lutheran, she was baptized, confirmed, and married in Lutheran churches. She and her husband John celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2016 by renewing their vows in a ceremony at Faith (which was followed by a really awesome party!). Suzanne is a proud mom to John Conrad Johnston-baugh and his partner Rob King, Melissa Ross, and Julie Biles. She is also the proud grandmother of Jennifer Ross, Ian Ross and Sean Ross. Staats, Faith’s pastor at the time, allowed them to store their kayaks in the attic here, even though they attended All Saints at the time. They fell in love with Faith and have been coming here ever since. Amy is originally from Connecticut, but twenty-five years ago, she packed up her car and headed west with no particular destination in mind. Somehow, she ended up and Phoenix. Amy works as a Medical Social Worker, but in her free time she enjoys hiking, boating, spending time with friends and family and all things “Little House on the Prairie.” As a lifelong Lutheran, Amy has a willingness to serve her faith community and has served as a Worship Assistant and worked with the Reconciling in Christ organization. She would like to eventually become more involved in lay ministry doing hospital visits and home communion.

MADALINE HANSEN is very well-known around Faith, in part because she has been a member here for sixty-two years and has served in just about every area of its ministry. Madaline was born on her grandparents’ farm in Ohio. She had severe asthma, and doctors advised her parents to move to a dry climate, so in 1947, they moved to Phoenix. They attended American Lutheran where Madaline was confirmed, but transferred to Faith in 1955 when she was a junior at Phoenix Christian High School. After graduating as Class Salutatorian, Madaline worked at Lou Register, Inc. furniture store for twenty-six years. Madaline married Les Hansen in 1981, and worked at M. Leslie Hansen Realty for nine years. She later joined Realty Executives, where she worked for 26 years before finally retiring. Madaline has a daughter, Sharon Chandelle, and four step-children, John Hansen, Lynne Hansen, Joy Leutner and Jean Lester. Madaline has served multiple terms on Faith’s Church Council, and has held the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. She has been involved in Fellowship, Stewardship, Finance, Outreach, Evangelism, Social Justice, FaithWatchers, Christian Education and Thrivent and she sang in the Chancel Choir for many years. Now widowed, Madaline lives with her cat, Alberta, and says the most important thing she does outside of church is work to stay healthy. In the past however, she enjoyed playing tennis and traveling. Her travels have taken her all over Europe, as well as to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Hong Kong, China, Istanbul, Turkey, Spain and Portugal.

Our Council President, ERIK REHMS, is yet another life long Lutheran who hails from Chicago, Illinois. Erik moved to Phoenix fourteen years ago to escape the lovely Chicago winters, but also to be closer to family in California. (Erik’s parents, Don and Dolores Rehms, live in Anaheim, but now make Phoenix their winter home and attend Faith when they are in the Valley.) Erik has served several terms on our Church Council and was the treasurer for 6 years. He has been involved with Finance, Stewardship and Evangelism programs. Besides being actively involved in Faith’s ministry, he has served as the Region 2 Coordinator for Reconciling Works, and he was a voting delegate of the Capital Conference to the ELCA’s 2016 Churchwide Conference. Erik is a Corporate Accountant for AECOM Hunt. When he isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his long time partner Chris and their dog Roxy, a one year old welsh terrier. He has also recently joined a bowling league. Erik looks forward to the new ministry opportunities that will come with Faith’s partnership with Valley Interfaith Project (VIP) and with the Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest (LSS-SW) Refugee Focus Program.

Next time, get to know Dave Hulin, Jan Kuenzli, and two more of our Council members. And soon, we plan to have all the bios, along with individual pictures on our web page.

Now that Summer is officially over, I want to update all of you on Faith’s financial situation. As of August 31, 2017, we are $27,000 in the red. This compares to $23,000 in the red last year. Summer months are often slow for us, but now we need to energize our giving and get our finances back in the black!

I ask each of you to prayerfully consider what God has given you and what you will be returning to Faith Lutheran to keep our ministries thriving.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

A New Chance

Once in constant danger and living in fear as a refugee, see how your generosity gave Ali a strong foundation to thrive.

Ali was born in 1992, not long after the end of the first Iraqi war. His dad was a veterinarian and they lived a comfortable life just outside of Baghdad.

All that changed. His father had taken a job with an international organization based in the U.S. Meanwhile, his older brother had gone to work as an interpreter for the U.S. military. Word of the family's ties to America spread and sparked anger. Neighbors turned on them. "They considered us traitors," Ali said.

The anger boiled over one night in 2005 when an armed group attacked their home. "We heard shots. It was so loud," Ali said. "They were shooting our house and yelling, 'Death to America.' Iraqi police were called but it was the U.S. military that came to the rescue. They sent 10 to 15 Humvees," Ali said.

Thus began a long, frightening journey in search of safety. They spent several years in danger, in-cluding bomb threats, and cloaked in secrecy, out of fear others would discover their ties to the Unit-ed States.

Ali was 19 when word came that their resettlement to Arizona as refugees had been approved. Now 25, Ali smiles broadly describing his family's transformation. Ali is a banker and is eager to pay your generosity forward by actively volunteering, hosting drives, and inviting his friends to learn about LSS-SW.

He can't imagine what would have come of them, and the 1,300 other refugees resettled through LSS-SW, without the help they received from congregations like you.

"It was like having a family here," Ali says. "They pretty much extended their arms and said, 'Let us show you the way.'"

OKTOBERFEST 2017…OLD AND NEW! S F C-(

Faith’s 2017 Oktoberfest Gala/Silent Auction should be better than ever. The Silent Auction will feature great repeat items: gift cards for top area restaurants, dinners hosted by congregation members, Joni’s famous German chocolate cake, a Guaymas weeklong vacation for the entire family, an $800 set of new tires, yoga, free rounds of golf, a trip to Macy’s, tickets to see the Diamondbacks, the Suns, the Symphony, and theatrical productions to name just a few. In the restaurant category, there will be several NEW names: Seasons 52, Otro Café, LaPinata, Shake Shack, Elly’s Brunch and Café, Joe’s Midnight Run, Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers, L’Amor and others. When it comes to the main course; the beer and soft drinks, appetizers, brats, German potato salad, beets, and sauerkraut will NOT be new, but Cheryl’s mouth-watering dessert WILL be…cranberry cheesecake bars. The accordion music will be old-style, but the special entertainment will be new. And the price of all this fun has NOT gone up… still $12.50 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under. The main event will be Saturday, October 21, with Silent Auction viewing starting at 5:15 pm, dinner served at 6 pm. Tickets will be on sale October 1, 8, and 15, between the 9am and 11am services .

Four individuals are working on their GED or in Job Corp. Your funding helps provide bus passes, tuition, and supplies where needed. Two of the four are single mothers, the third is a married new mom, and the fourth is an 18 year-old young man. One year ago, six individuals were homeless, but today they are in apartments. One woman had been on the streets for over 20 years. One couple had been sleeping on their aunt’s floor for months. One of the women was new to apartment living and said she felt so safe in her own place, even if she was sleeping on the floor. She now has an air mattress and we have a futon coming soon. We have been able to provide all of their household needs, including furniture. All of their homes were furnished with donations.

I have preached at a number of churches this year. I was introduced to the lively crowd at Prince of Peace and the great folks at Our Savior in Mesa and Gold Canyon. I have also visited New Journey, Bethany, Faith, Living Waters, and Grace. I was honored to be guest speaker at the WELCA Cactus conference, allowing me to share the NAU ministry at their Spring Conference. They had a large turnout and we received so many donations. It took two cars and a pickup to get them to us!

We recently had a baby shower of one of NAUM’s members sponsored by six women from Grace. A member from Our Savior/ Gold Canyon was present along with 9 women for Native Ministry. It was a surprise to the Native Women because they had never been to a women’s only baby shower, with games, prizes and food they didn’t have to cook. The prizes were furnished by two WELCA members from Grace.

More people are returning for worship. We know part of it is the meal we serve. Yet, through traditions and culture and ceremony and comfort along with the Good News, healing is taking place. People are healing and stepping up into a leadership roles. We have a series of self growth opportu-nities available this fall: Intergeneration Grief and Trauma, Suicide among Native Americans, and a personal development series will be offered for members of NAUM.

We are praying and discerning a call to begin a Welcome Ministry for those re-entering society from prison. Our membership is in favor of this outreach ministry because so many have friends or relatives in prison, or have been in prison themselves. NAUM has assisted with Greyhound bus tickets back to Reservations, bus passes for job search, clothing and shoes for those who are re-entering from prison. NAUM will sponsor a Re-entry Simulation workshop for all church members who are interested in spending two hours in the life of a felon who is re-entering society. In my years of Ministry I have walked with people through this unbearable process. What an eye opener! We are partnering with Faith Lutheran Church and following their lead in this training format with Sue Ellen Allen.

For a list of items that can be donated to support NAUM in their work, please see page 22.

As our 2017 “God’s work. Our hands.” comes to a close, I cannot say thank you enough to all those who donated to our month-long drive for sheets and diapers to benefit Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest (LSS-SW) and to those who joined in at last Sunday’s “God’s work. Our hands.” celebration to help tie ribbons on the packages before they were delivered to LSS-SW

this past week. After filling the back of my Honda Fit (which is advertised as large enough to hold a llama!) to the ceiling, I realized that it would take me two trips just to transport everything. LSS-SW could not have been more thrilled to receive such a generous donation!

The Grand Prize winner of our raffle was Nancy Maxwell, who took home an original, hand-carved piece by the Carpenter’s Daughter. Three lucky winners, Madaline Hansen, Craig Westendorf, and Patsy Wasbotten, took home delicious homemade rum cakes by TraPa. Frankie & Billie Gortarez were excited to win a set of Oktoberfest tickets. Brenda Lund, Diane Ericson, Doris Krazel and Nancy & Leo Dickson all took home plates of Dee-Lightful Double Decker Fudge. And Tim Turner and Caroline Cerda were the winners of “Hate Has No Home Here” magnets. There is no doubt in my mind, however, that the real winners will be those whose lives are touched by your generosity.

I also want to thank C ( G(( for organizing such a great meal last Sunday and to all those who brought food to share. The mini-sliders were a huge hit, everything tasted delicious, and all those who stopped into Parish Hall enjoyed not only the food, but the atmosphere of community and connectedness as we celebrated the ministry of Faith Lutheran Church.

Arizona’s Chief Justice has made access to justice and procedural fairness, particularly for the poor and disadvantaged, among the courts’ highest priorities, and he created the Arizona Commission on Access to Justice. Judge Winthrop of the Arizona Court of Appeals has served as the chair of the Commission and he will give us a briefing on that project. Ms. Love, the state courts’ liaison with the legislature, will brief us on the progress of the Criminal Justice reform project which made some headway in the legislature last year. Faith has been active in recent years in advocating for reforms in areas where poor people are severely disadvantaged in both the criminal and civil justice systems. Come meet these two lead-ing advocates who are seeking ways to involve the broader faith community in the advocacy being led by leaders in our justice system.

Celebrate 500 years of Reformation AND 100 YEARS OF GRACE IN THE CITY

Grace Lutheran Church invites our sister churches and ministry partners to a

Reformation Oktoberfest Open House.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2017 · NOON – 8PM

Please RSVP at http://www.graceinthecity.com to help us plan this event.

As we gather in fellowship, we honor our German and Lutheran heritage and throw in a few modern twists.

FELLOWSHIP

This open house is a great way for churches in the Capitol conference of the Grand Canyon Synod and our ministry partners to get to know each other. And it's Grace's way of saying thank you for all the support we receive.

FOOD

We'll have plenty of German-inspired food, like bratwurst and hot dogs, sauerkraut and pretzels, potato salads and desserts. In honor of Martin Luther, German-style beer will be on tap as well as craft root beer. Most food and drink will be free, with the beer and some specialty foods on a pay-per-item basis.

FUN

Enjoy trivia, yard games, and special prizes, all in a Reformation theme. We'll have great music playing, from traditional polka to polka-

inspired norteño. German beer hall style seating will be available inside and out for maximum socializing.

This space in our news-letter is for anyone who has a service they would like to advertise or a

needed service that they would like to find some-one to hire to do. We can either print your business card or run small blurbs (no larger than the size of

a business card). We will also, on occasion, print ads from other churches that we are affili-ated with. We are hoping that we will be able to help connect those in our Faith family with oth-ers who are looking for help - yard work, house cleaning, handyman jobs, or any other jobs that you might think of.

NATIVE AMERICAN URBAN MINISTRY

We always need FURNITURE but it is difficult for us to pick it up and we lack storage space. So far, we’ve had a good response from requests on our Face Book page and have been able to get furniture if we put out a post.

We have been putting together “first timer boxes”, which include non-consumables: TOILET PAPER, DISHWASHING SOAP, BROOM, DUSTPAN, MOP, GARBAGE CAN, TOOTH-PASTE AND BRUSH, ETC. We also include HOUSEWARES, SHEETS, BLANKET, PILLOWS and TOWELS. And we try to include some food items to help those who do not receive food stamps.

EYE GLASSES donated by the Lions Club through Our Savior/Gold Canyon and The Hackneys of Spirit of Hope have been a successful part of this ministry and very much appreciated. One woman lost her glasses and the first pair she picked out were perfect. She thanked me and we both thanked God for your love and support. I had no idea there were so many people out here in need of glasses.

With the bit of rainy weather, many appreciate the NEW, DRY SOCKS that are donated. I love to see faces light up when they get a new pair of socks. God’s work, Our hands. Life feels better sometimes with something as simple as a pair of clean warm socks.
